Last two decades have been years of tremendous growth and prosperity for India. Energy is the driver for the growth engines and sustained growth requires sustained energy supply. For a fast growing nation like India energy security is of prime concern and on the supply side, the next decade is extremely challenging for our country.

The current energy mix is dominated by fossil fuels that are, oil, gas and coal contributing about 85 percent. According to the experts, perhaps most of the easy to find hydrocarbons have been discovered. However the dominance of these non renewable sources is expected to continue in the next decade. Experts discussed the challenges such as recovery from brown fields, finding new oils in logistically difficult frontiers along with the need to explore and intensify research & development in new frontiers like gas hydrates, shale gas and renewable energy. Experts from E&P industry, deliberated on the topical issues over the two days conference on Growth Drivers for Energy Security for the Decade.

Theme : Growth Drivers for Energy Security for the Decade

Challenges & Opportunities in E&P Sector

“Energy demand is likely to increase at a rate of 1.6 percent globally, however for developing nations like India; the growth is expected to be more than 3.6percent. India’s dependence on all fossil fuels will remain in dominance in coming decades. In the current

scenario, we need to intensify exploration efforts in untapped Indian sedimentary basins and strengthen exploration efforts further by initiating exploration and remaining sedimentary basins and awarding areas in ultradeep waters and logistically difficult areas.”

Mr. S K SrivastavaDirector General, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons

“Deepwater will play major role for energy security among non-renewable resources during the years to come to address the issue of energy security. This would require huge investments on the part of oil companies to carry out aggressive E&P activities, new

technologies and skilled manpower.”

Mr. Yogesh Bhatnagar, Executive Director, ONGC

“Industry is already familiar with the use of FPSOs, for processing and storage of oil and gas. Floating LNG is the next big thing for the hydrocarbon industry, which is now reaching maturity.”

Mr. Victor AlessandriniBusiness Development Manager, Offshore Business Unit, Technip, France

“A successful project requires strategic construction planning. The technology solution is a key driver of the construction strategy; however constructability and installability often drive the selection process.”

Latest Trends in Offshore E & P Technology

“Number of deep water rigs will almost double by the year 2012. The number of deepwater findings will undoubtedly increase growing with the requirements for floating production system. This frontier area will demand technological excellence as operators

will face complex technological challenges due to deep water exploration, strong environmental concerns, and increasing regulatory limitations with costly implications on operational procedures.”

Mr. Pekka PaasivaaraExecutive Member of the Board, Germanischer Lloyd

“Marlim project is a pilot project and first subsea separation system for heavy oil in a mature, deepwater field. This is a mature field in operation since 1991. Pipe Separator Technology can be used for reinjection of water into production reservoir and separation of heavy oil in

subsea environment.”

Mr. Colin Swan, System Engineering Manager, FMC

“Globally, around 70 percent of oil production is coming from mature fields. There are vast amounts of unrecovered hydrocarbons lying in mature fields, which need to be recovered using new technologies to meet the increasing demand. In the era

of reduced green field opportunities, mature fields hold the key for sustaining supply.”

Mr. S. Bhattacharya, General Manager (Res.), ONGC

“Fundamental research is required to develop future umbilical solutions for deep water and subsea installations that require a dedicated team to enhance the current technologies to overcome the challenges for deepwater applications.”

Mr. Ian Probyn, Senior Engineer,R & D Technip DUCO,UK.

“SLOR production system offers an attractive solution due to the ability for pre-installation, thus taking it off the critical path and reducing limitations imposed by vessel availability and installation condition. The de-coupling of the vessel with the riser via a flexible

jumper also results in increased riser stability during storms or other events that increase the vessel motions. Shorter time to first oil and ability to allow for an organic field expansion also make SLOR production system a riser solution that is designed with installation and in-service in mind.”

Mr. Madhu HariharanPrinicpal Engineer , 2H Offshore, Houston , TX

“Our client faced the challenge of managing over 15,000 production and injection wells in a mature oil field with limited resources. Maximum time was being spent on data collection from legacy based databases for input into adhoc tools. We offered them solutions

to manage overall operations efficiently.”

Mr. Biswajit Chakraborty, Director, SAIC.

Advance Offshore Technologies For E & P

“Now India being more globalized, it would be a very interesting challenge for all the people in this industry especially the younger talent to swing back to the engineering industry and the manufacturing industry from purely the service industry.”

Mr. K. VenkatarmananMember of the Board & President (Operations) , Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

“Brown field engineering can only be as accurate as the As-built data gathering in plants. New 3-D Laser Scanning Technology helps to overcome the problems of conventional systems and yield better results irrespective of challenges such as restricted

accessibility to plant areas due to elevation, noise, weather and contamination etc.”

Mr. Madanan Sankara MararEngineering Manager, Impac, Mumbai.

“As scopes of the project in the oil and gas industry widen dramatically. Siemens’ single – source supply concept provides a means for a significant reduction of CAPEX and project management complexity. It integrates a multitude of technologies

and processes tailored to deliver ultimate quality in every respect. ”

Dr. Carsten - Suennke BerendsenVice President, Oil and Gas Division (India & South Asia), Siemens India Ltd.

“The challenges with high pressure can often be relatively easily covered through designing ‘more’ of the same; increase sizes, wall thicknesses or using higher strength materials. The high temperature case however affects the system differently as it may directly

change the material properties and behaviour of systems. Temperature also affects ‘neighbouring’ components such as coating and insulation systems.”

Mr. Morten PedersenVP – MSP/SPS Concepts & Studies, Aker Solutions, Norway.

“World energy basket is likely to remain dominant with fossil fuels. Gas hydrates are considered to be as an energy resource for the next decade. Natural gas has become a geopolitical commodity due to uneven distribution. There is huge energy resource potential

of natural gas hydrates. USA, Canada, Japan, India and China have accelerated efforts on exploration and production of gas hydrates.”

Risk Management in E & P Industry

“E&P projects are characterized by intense use of capital and high rates of profitability; however small changes in execution programme due to improvement or execution delays can bring about positive or negative impact that result in economic consequences.

An adequate follow up of the daily execution work helps to timely identify, possible deviations that project could suffer during its execution. Therefore it is necessary to select right project execution methodology in order to maintain and enhance project’s value.”

Mr. Mukesh SharmaED (Chief Offshore Engg. Services), ONGC.

“When we talk of geology and geophysical part of development project, in deepwater there are relatively more uncertainties with stratigraphic reservoirs and characterization of these reservoirs become very difficult. We cannot afford to have more appraisal drilling because of the cost. Resolving uncertainty is required to improve reservoir characterization.”

Mr. Subhash C. VarmaPresident –Development, Reliance Industries Limited.

The International Exhibition

Last two decades have been years of tremendous growth, prosperity and also a huge demand for energy for India. Energy is the driver for the growth engines and sustained growth requires sustained energy supply. For a fast growing nation like India energy security is of prime concern, and on the supply side, the next decade is

extremely challenging for our country.

Indian oil & gas sector is stepping up exploration & production activities in order to meet with the increasing energy demand. Many international companies have entered the Indian market to explore the business opportunities. OCEANTEX 2010 showcased latest products, machinery and equipments for the Oil& Gas industry, which received tremendous response from the users. The exhibition was visited by the top notch industry leaders from Indian and international oil & gas industry. Two day conference program witnessed the experts deliberate and discuss the challenges that the industry was facing and the need to address the issues in tandem with Government.

Power Sector plays a key role in the economic growth of a country. Indian power sector has grown significantly during the past two decades. As the Indian economy continues to surge ahead, electrification and electricity services have been expanding concurrently to support the growth rate. The demand for power is growing exponentially and the scope of growth of this sector is immense. Although coal remains the mainstay source of

energy for power, India has abundant renewable resources that need to be used to their full potential to overcome the demand deficit in the country.

CHEMTECH Foundation launched the first edition of ENERTECH World Expo series this year, a comprehensive energy industry event to strive to focus the accelerative growth in the power sector in India by focusing into key areas. ENERTECH World Expo 2010, exhibition received tremendous support from the industry and had participants from India and overseas. ENERTECH 2010 showcased the latest products, machinery, equipment & developments in the industry.
