month of the season this year. UTEP enjoyed its last winning season in 2005, finishing 8-4 and earning a berth in the GMAC Bowl.

It’s Not a Sprint, it’s a Marathon ... The Miners are facing a regular season schedule with no off weeks for the first time since 1999. UTEP has played 12 straight games without an open date six times (1980, 1982, 1983, 1988, 1989 and 1999) prior to this year.

Look Who’s Back UTEP returns 44 letterwinners and 11 starters from last year’s team that finished 4-8, but lost five games by a touchdown or less. The Miners have seven start-ers returning on offense and four starters returning on defense. Overall UTEP has 25 players returning who have started games at the collegiate level (17 on of-fense and eight on defense). QB Trevor Vittatoe has the most career starts of any UTEP offensive player (36), and DL Robert Soleyjacks tops all defensive players with 33 career starts.

Miners Have Experience UTEP’s roster features 26 seniors, including 16 on the offensive side of the ball. The 26 seniors ties UTEP for the fourth-top total in the country behind Hawaii (31), Louisville (27) and TCU (27). Iowa also has 26 seniors. The Miners have 21 juniors, 18 soph-omores and 46 freshmen (35 true/11 redshirt).

A Decided Difference in Experienceon Opposite Sides of the Ball The Miners have 17 offensive players returning who have started games at the FBS level, but only eight defensive players returning who have started at this level. The bulk of UTEP’s returning starting experience comes in the offensive line, as six players (Eloy Atkinson, Tanner Cullumber, Rod Huntley, Anthony McNac, Will Osolinsky, Alex Solot) have combined to make 62 starts in that unit.

Eight All-Conference Honorees Return UTEP has eight players returning who have earned All-Conference USA honors in their careers -- WR Kris Adams (honorable mention in 2008), DB Braxton Amy (honorable mention in 2007 & 2009), RB Donald Buckram (first team in 2009), OL Tan-ner Cullumber (honorable mention in 2009), OL Rod Huntley (honorable mention in 2009), DL Robert Soleyjacks (honorable mention in 2009), OL Alex Solot (honorable mention in 2009) and QB Trevor Vittatoe (honorable mention in 2008 & 2009).

Returning Percentages UTEP returns players who accounted for 95.9 percent (1,893-of-1,974) of the team’s positive rush-ing yardage, 99.7 percent (3,320-of-3,331) of the

2010 UTEP FOOTBALL

passing yards and 59.7 percent (1,987-of-3,331) of the receiving yards. The Miners also return 90.6 per-cent (1,182-of-1,304) of their kickoff return yards. On defense, UTEP returns 46.6 percent (461-of-990) of its tackles, 38.7 percent (24-of-62) of its tackles for losses and 43.3 percent (6.5-of-15) of its sacks.

Amy Among Significant Number Changes Here’s a rundown of UTEP players who have changed numbers since last season:

Taking a Look at the Two-Deep If the preseason depth chart holds, UTEP would start 10 seniors on offense for the season opener versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The only non-senior in the projected lineup is junior wide receiver Donavon Kemp. The Miners have three seniors, seven juniors and one freshman listed as first-string defensive play-ers. The only freshmen in the two deep are Adam Ayala (backup defensive end) and Germard Reed (starting defensive tackle). Based on the depth chart, UTEP could have six first-time starters on defense in week one.

Defense Gets an Overhaul for 2010 UTEP has a new defensive scheme -- with a 4-3 base -- and a largely new defensive staff for the 2010 season. The Miners employed a 3-3-5 scheme in 2008 and 2009. UTEP’s new defensive coordinator is long-time NFL defensive line coach Andre Pat-terson. Adam Gonzaga takes over coaching the safeties, and former Miner Robert Rodriguez has been elevated from a graduate assistant to lineback-ers coach. The only holdover on the defensive staff is cornerbacks coach Allen Johnson.

Miners Rank Among Nation’s Top Returnees Donald Buckram is the nation’s second-leading returning rusher for the 2010 season. Buckram aver-aged 132.8 yards per game last season. Pittsburgh’s Dion Lewis ranks first among returning rushers with 138.4 yards per contest a year ago. Buckram also ranks second among FBS returnees in scoring (10.5 ppg) behind Navy QB Ricky Dobbs (12.5 ppg), and sixth amongst all-purpose backs (170.6 ypg). QB Trevor Vittatoe ranks fifth among FBS return-ees in passing yards per game (275.7), and ninth in total offense per game (268.8). In addition, Vittatoe

rates second among FBS returnees in career pass-ing yards (9,683) behind Houston’s Case Keenum (12,950). Vittatoe is also second in career passing touchdowns (75) behind Keenum (102), and third in total offense (9,437) behind Keenum (13,741) and Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick (9,982).

Vittatoe on Pace to Become UTEP’s All-Time Leading Passer Trevor Vittatoe has thrown for 9,683 yards in his collegiate career and needs just 1,402 yards to supplant Jordan Palmer as UTEP’s all-time leading passer. Vittatoe is the only quarterback in school his-tory to pass for 3,000 yards in three separate sea-sons. He needs 1,605 yards to break the UTEP ca-reer total offense record, and 14 passing touchdowns to shatter the Miner career standard. With 2,082 career rushing yards, Donald Buck-ram has an outside shot at eclipsing John Harvey’s school record of 3,576 yards.

Vittatoe Can Join Elite Company Provided he’s healthy, Trevor Vittatoe is a shoo-in to lead the Miners in passing for the fourth straight season this fall. He could become only the second UTEP player to achieve the feat, along with John Furman (1958-61).

Vittatoe to Add to Record Simply By Starting Trevor Vittatoe will add to his own school stan-dard by becoming the first UTEP signal-caller to start the season opener as a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. No other Miner QB in the modern era has ever taken the first snap of the campaign as both a freshman and sophomore.

Amy Granted Sixth Year An inexperienced UTEP defense received some good news on July 16 when Braxton Amy was awarded a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Amy’s waiver was approved five months after UTEP officials first began submitting paperwork. Despite being hampered by injuries throughout his career, Amy has produced 216 tackles, 8.5 tackles for losses, two sacks, nine interceptions and 10 pass break-ups in 30 collegiate games (21 starts). Amy is slated to start at strong safety this fall after manning the linebacker/safety hybrid Miner position in UTEP’s 3-3-5 defense last season. He missed both the 2005 and 2008 campaigns due to knee injuries.

Don’t Forget About These Guys Seven players could figure heavily into UTEP’s plans this fall after missing most or all of the 2009 campaign due to injury or off-the-field issues -- LB Isaiah Carter, RB Vernon Frazier, LB Jamie Irving, DB Wiston Jeune, OL Anthony McNac, RB Leilyon Myers and OL Will Osolinsky.

Carter, who missed the entire ‘09 season while concentrating on academics, played in 22 of 24 games from 2007-08 and tallied 42 tackles. Frazier has rushed 41 times for 201 yards (4.9 avg.) in his Miner career, but missed most of the ‘09 campaign due to ACL surgery. Irving came on strong in the final two games of last season (five tackles each against Houston and Marshall), but was sidelined for five contests with a concussion. Jeune missed five games with an ankle injury a year ago, but is regarded as one of the Miners’ hard-est hitters. An ankle injury sent McNac to the sidelines for the final 10 games of the ‘09 campaign. Myers spent last season working to gain eligibility after transferring from Palomar Junior College. He originally committed to Washington following a pro-lific prep career at Lynnwood (Calif.) High School. Osolinsky started the first four games of 2009 at right tackle before suffering a season-ending shoul-der injury.

Miners Have High Hopes For This Newcomer Junior college transfer Travaun Nixon enters fall workouts as the projected starter at right cornerback and will certainly be a player to watch in UTEP’s new defensive scheme. Nixon registered 38 tackles with six interceptions and five pass break-ups last season at Ventura Junior College. He had two more inter-ceptions that were nullified due to penalties. Against Cerritos Junior College on Sept. 26, he intercepted three passes in the first 18 minutes, returning one 27 yards for a touchdown, and returned a fourth quarter punt for 70 yards.

UTEP Looking to Build Depth at Receiver The Miners have leaned heavily on Kris Adams and Jeff Moturi at the wide receiver position over the last two years. Adams is embarking on his se-nior season, but Moturi has taken his talents to the Green Bay Packers and replacing his team-leading 974 yards from last season will likely be a collective effort. Minus Adams (42 catches-580 yards in ‘09), UTEP’s returning wideouts combined to make 60 receptions for 772 yards a year ago. Leading that group were senior Evan Davis (19 catches-186 yards) and junior Donavon Kemp (12 catches-284 yards). Kemp’s 23.7 yards per reception rated sec-ond on the squad a year ago, and he scored a touch-down in each of the season’s final two games (at Rice, versus Marshall). He tied Moturi for the team lead in TD catches with four.

Adams Hoping to Regain Sophomore Form A bounce back year from Kris Adams would go a long way towards UTEP putting another explosive offense on the field in 2010. While Adams’ statistics were certainly nothing to sniff at last season (42 catches-580 yards-2 TDs), they weren’t close to his spectacular numbers of 2009 (50 catches-958 yards-14 TDs). Adams’ top two performances of the ‘09 campaign came in the opener versus Buffalo (nine receptions for 98 yards) and the finale against Marshall (five receptions for 97 yards). Adams ranks eighth on UTEP’s career touchdown catches list (16) entering his senior year. He is tied for 10th in school annals with five 100-yard games.

Backup QB Among Interesting Position Battles When the Miners take the field for their first prac-tice on Aug. 5, several starting positions will be up for grabs, including three spots in the offensive line -- left tackle (Will Osolinsky or Lance Evbuomwan), left guard (Anthony McNac or Tanner Cullumber) and center (Tanner Cullumber or Eloy Atkinson). But one of the more intriguing battles figures to be for the backup quarterback slot. Senior James Thomas II (who will also see action at wide receiver) is listed as Trevor Vittatoe’s top backup entering the fall, but he will be pushed by sophomore Tim Curry and redshirt freshman Carson Meger. Curry, Meger and incoming freshman Javia Hall will be in the mix to supplant Vittatoe as UTEP’s start-ing signal-caller in 2011.

UTEP Kicking Corps Starting Over The Miners are guaranteed to have a new punter and kicker this fall. Greg Hiett, who handled the bulk of the punting duties last season, has exhausted his eligbility. His backup a year ago, Kyle Petersen, is not returning. Also gone is Logan Barrett, who led the team in field goals (13) and PATs (39) while rank-ing second in scoring (78 points) as a freshman. Listed atop the depth chart at all three kicking positions is junior college transfer Dakota Warren, who will participate in his first UTEP practice on Aug. 5. Warren redshirted at Ventura College last season. He averaged 37.9 yards on punts and 55.2 yards on kickoffs the year prior at Henderson State University.

Recapping 2009 UTEP was 4-8 last season and tied for third place in Conference USA’s Western Division with a 3-5 mark. The Miners lost five games by a touchdown or less, and were 28 points shy of winning nine games. UTEP beat two bowl-bound teams in Houston and Marshall. The Miners’ 58-41 conquest of the 12th-ranked Cougars on Oct. 3 marked their first win over a ranked opponent in 12 years. UTEP was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week fol-lowing the win over Houston, and RB Donald Buck-

ram was appointed the Walter Camp Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 262 yards versus the Cougars.

29th Season For Price UTEP’s Mike Price is 163-160 in his 29th season as a collegiate head coach, including 34-38 in his seventh year at the helm of the Miner program. He has coached seven bowl teams during a career that has taken him to Weber State, Washington State and UTEP, including two with the Miners (2004 Houston, 2005 GMAC). Price ranks ninth among active FBS coaches with 163 victories behind Penn State’s Joe Paterno (394), Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer (229), Ohio State’s Jim Tressel (229), Texas’ Mack Brown (214), Nevada’s Chris Ault (206), South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier (177), Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly (171) and Arizona State’s Dennis Erickson (167).

Offensive Excellence Under Price Since Mike Price came on board as UTEP’s head coach for the 2004 season, the Miners have the fifth-best passing offense (283.6 ypg), the 22nd-best scoring offense (31.9 ppg) and the 27th-best total offense (407.5 ypg) in the country. UTEP has had more 30-point games (44), 40-point games (19) and 50-point games (6) under Price than any other head coach.

Miners Have Set School Total OffenseStandard in 2 of the Last 3 Seasons The top two total offense marks in UTEP history have been established over the last three seasons. In 2007, the Miners set a school standard by racking up 5,074 yards. They bettered the mark a year ago by compiling 5,144 yards. The UTEP season benchmark for passing yards (3,754) has also been produced in the Mike Price era (2006).

Miners Forcing Turnovers Under Price While UTEP will have a new defensive scheme in place for 2010, one thing it can count on will be forcing plenty of turnovers. The Miners have 151 takeaways in the Mike Price era, which is the most in a six-year stretch since 1989-94 (also 151). UTEP caused 30 turnovers in 2004, the highest single-sea-son sum since 1989 (39).

2010 UTEP FOOTBALL

DONALD BUCKRAMCAREER NOTES: UTEP’s ninth-leading all-time rusher with 2,082 yards entering his senior year ... also tied for sixth place in career 100-yard games (nine) and seventh in rushing touchdowns (20) ... needs 91 all-purpose yards to tie Fred Wendt for 10th place on the UTEP career list ... needs only 692 rushing yards in 2010 to etch his name into the Conference USA career top-15 ... is the third player in UTEP history to rush for 200 yards in a game three times, along with Fred Wendt (four times) and John Harvey (three times).

2009 (JUNIOR): First team All-Conference USA and UTEP’s Offensive MVP ... shattered a UTEP single-season rushing record that had stood for over 60 years, running for 1,594 yards on 259 carries (6.2 avg.) ... also established a Miner season standard with eight 100-yard rushing games and tied Fred Wendt’s (1948) record with three 200-yard performances ... his 18 rushing touchdowns rated second in UTEP annals behind Wendt’s 20 in 1948 ... averaged 132.8 rushing yards per game, second in the Miner record book ... also accounted for the second-most all-purpose yards (2,047) and second-most points (126) in school history ... one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, presented to the nation’s top running back ... ranked third nationally in scoring (10.5 ppg), fourth in rushing yards per game (132.8) and 11th in all-purpose yards per game (170.6) ... joined Stanford’s Toby Gerhart as the only FBS players to rush for 200+ yards three times during the ‘09 campaign ... Buckram achieved the feat versus Houston (262 yards), SMU (241 yards) and Tulane (234 yards) ... became one of only four players in NCAA history to post 200 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in the same game when he compiled 234 on the ground/109 via the pass at Tulane ... led Conference USA in rushing, making him the first Miner to pace the league in that statistical category in the modern era of football (since 1965) ... also first in C-USA in scoring and second in all-purpose yards ... in the C-USA record book, holds the fifth-most rushing yards in a season, the fifth-most rushing yards per game, the fifth-most points, tied for the fifth-most touchdowns and tied for the seventh-most rushing TDs ... compiled 300+ all-purpose yards in back-to-back games -- a UTEP first -- when he racked up 343 at Tulane and 307 at SMU ... prior to the 2009 season, no Miner player had amassed 300 all-purpose yards in a game since 1965 ... Buckram and Tulsa’s Damaris Johnson were the only FBS players to tally 300+ all-purpose yards in consecutive outings during the ‘09 season ... averaged 162.0 yards rushing in C-USA play with 16 touchdowns in eight games ... recorded his first of eight 100-yard games in the season opener versus Buffalo (14 carries-108 yards) ... rambled for 113 yards on 14 attempts at New Mexico State ... breakout performance came versus no. 12 Houston with 32 rushes for 262 yards and four TDs ... the 262 yards marked the second-most in a game by a UTEP player and the most since 1948 ... compiled 165 yards on 26 carries versus Tulsa ... scored two fourth quarter TDs against the Golden Hurricane, including the game-winner with 29 seconds remaining as the Miners rallied from a 24-13 deficit in the final six and a half minutes and won 28-24 ... that started a string of five 100-yard rushing efforts for Buckram, including versus UAB (28 carries-164 yards), Tulane (34 carries-234 yards), SMU (33 carries-241 yards) and Rice (34 carries-147 yards) ... scored three rushing touchdowns against Rice and reached the end zone four times (three rushing/one receiving) versus Tulane.

2008 (SOPHOMORE): Ranked third on the team in rushing yards (348) and second in carries (75) … scored two touchdowns, one at Southern Miss and
