CONFLICT TERMINATION
A Selected Bibliography
U.S. ARMY WAR COLLEGE LIBRARY
February 2014
…every war must be conceived of as a single whole; with his first move the
general must already have a clear idea of the goal on which all lines are to
converge.
– Carl von Clausewitz
On War, Book 8, Chapter 3
translated by Michael Howard and Peter Paret
At the outset of a war its character and scope should be determined on the basis of
the political probabilities. The closer these political probabilities drive war toward
the absolute, the more the belligerent states are involved and drawn in to its vortex,
the clearer appear the connections between its separate actions, and the more
imperative the need not to take the first step without considering the last.
– Carl von Clausewitz

PREFACE
The study of Conflict Termination is an important topic of research for the United States Army.
The purpose of this bibliography is to introduce some of the resources readily available at the
U.S. Army War College or on the Internet about Conflict Termination. It is not a comprehensive
listing, but is intended to be a starting point for research.
With certain exceptions, the materials in this bibliography are dated from 2010 to the present.
For older materials, please see War Termination, compiled by Lenore Garder, October 2010. All
items are available through the USAWC Library. For your convenience, we have added U.S.
Army War College Library call numbers, Internet addresses, or database links at the end of each
entry. Web sites were accessed February 2014.
Due to licensing agreements, access to articles in the Library's subscription databases is limited
to current USAWC faculty, staff, and students. When off-network, USAWC personnel should
use their login and password for remote access. For the Army community stationed elsewhere or
deployed, many articles are online in AKO's "My Library" databases. Local libraries are another
option.
This bibliography and others compiled by our research librarians are available online through the
Library’s home page at http://usawc.libguides.com/bibliographies.
For additional information, please contact the Research, Instruction, and Access Services
Branch, U.S. Army War College Library, by sending an e-mail message to
[email protected], or by phoning DSN 242-3660 or Commercial (717) 245-3660.
