On Friday, April 15th, Athens Will Welcome

Kyle Prue, Author of:

The first book in this action packed trilogy, The Sparks, was conceived late one night when Kyle had insomnia. At just 16 years old, Kyle spent the summer writing the first installment of the trilogy.

What people are saying: “Kyle Prue inspired readers and writers of all levels with an engaging, relevant, and relatable presentation. Students were enthralled with Kyle’s anecdotes and personal experiences with reading and writing on his journey to becoming an award-winning, published author. Days later, students are still talk-ing about feeling inspired to write after listening to Kyle speak. What a great way to start off our school year! I would highly recommend Kyle Prue’s presentation as it is meaningful, fresh, and engaging–just what our students need!” - Lisa Packan, English Teacher, Eisenhower High School

Students will be attending his presentation during English classes throughout the day.

Check out http://kyleprue.com for more information

ORDER THE BOOK

News from the Career Resource Center….Skilled trades are in high demand in Michigan; there are currently over 8,000 job openings in our state. A great jumping-off point in learning more is http://www.mitalent.org/skilled-trades-parents-and-educators/ and there are brief videos by Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe: http://www.mitalent.org/6th-12th-videos/ Although most skilled trade professions don't require a four year degree, but you do need a mix of interest, hands-on talent/skills, and possibly a certification or license. Certifications and licenses often can be obtained in less than one year. Many skilled trades can be learned through apprenticeships or short-term training; and tuition assistance also may be available. Some training programs even offer college credits. Vocational schools, community colleges and techni-cal schools can save you money and time when compared to the expense of earning a two or four year diploma.

Caps and gowns will be distributed only to those students who have no academic or fi-nancial obligations and if your student has turned in their Senior Exit Survey. Seniors and their parents should check with Mrs. Sparbeck in the Guidance Office for fine obligations.

National Honor Society: If your student is an NHS member and has met the service point requirement, then your student has the honor of wearing an NHS collar. Please have your student pick up their col-lar when they receive their cap and gown at the NHS table. Please bring $3 dollars, in exact change. The collars must be turned in at the end of the graduation ceremony. The cost covers cleaning charges.

HONORS AND COMMENCEMENT ATTIRECommencement is a very impor-tant, dignified ceremony. To insure the dignity of the occasion for every-one, any student who is improperly dressed or who is under the influ-ence of alcohol or any illegal sub-stance will be removed from the lineup prior to the ceremony.

Everyone is encouraged to dress for the occasion for both the Hon-ors Convocation and Commence-ment. Athens students have be-come known for the pride they show in themselves and their school. Let’s continue this demonstration of pride. Because the gowns become wrinkled when boxed for delivery, graduates are urged to iron and hang the gown prior to wearing it. Pins, flowers, etc.

U.S. Selective ServiceFederal law requires all men living in the U.S. to register with Selective Service.

Young men must register with Selec-tive Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. They can submit their registration inforamtion when they turn 17 and 3 months and ita takes only a few minutes on the internet at www.sss.gov or they can pick up a registration card at a local post office. When they turn 18, thei rregistration will be processed automatically. Most importatnly, they will have commplied with the registration requirement which is the law. An acknowledge-ment card will be mailed to them with their Selective Service number.

Why is it so important for youg men to register with Selective Service? By complying with the law, they stay eligible for programs and benefits connected to registration, such as college loans and grants, federal employment, job training citzenship for immigrant men seeking to become citizens, and driver's license eligibility in most states.

If you have further questions, please see your counselor in the Guidance Office.

Senior Exit Survey & NewsletterSeniors must complete a Senior Exit Survey (included on page 10 of this newsletter). A Senior Newsletter and Senor Exit Survey have been recently e-mailed. (Also available on the Athens website athens.troy.k12.mi.us). Please complete and give to Mrs. Sparbeck in the Guid-ance Office, no later than April 25th. The college/university that you pro-vide on the Senior Exit Survey is where your final transcript will be sent. We must receive your Senior Exit Survey in order for you to re-ceive your cap and gown.

Please be aware, though, that such functions, at any grade level, are not connected with the district. There-fore, we asume no responsibility for any aspect of such an activitiy.

It's Election SeasonIn this issue, we spoke with the girls’ varsity softball coach, Kerry Brennan. The April 11th meeting of the boosters (delayed one week because of spring

break) will include board position nominations. Please come to the meeting at 7 p.m. in the TACC and be a part of the process to nominate a president, vicepresident, treasurer, secretary and one of four trustees. The election will take place at May’s meeting.

The Boosters are… comprised of parents with stu-dent athletes. It is really that simple. From running the concession stand to running the monthly meeting, it is all parents. The faces change and the students graduate moving on to successful lives, but the one thing that never falters is the dedication of the members working to create a support-ive environment where student athletes and their families are encouraged to strive for a well-roundededucational experience.

REMINDER TO COACHES AND PARENTS: Now is the time to start planning for next year’s season. Prepar-ing the booster budget will be taking place in the next few months. If you anticipate needing additional funds for your sport, fill out the form at our website and fol-low the instruction to submit it.

> What are you looking forward to this season?

I cannot wait to get started. We have so much talent in the pro-gram. This season marks my first as head coach, and I am so ex-cited to be here. I feel so lucky to be able to teach and coach in the same district – it is what I have always wanted to do.

> How have you prepared your-self and the team this year?

Our softball program has great leadership, and our girls are truly dedicated to the sport. Our stu-dent-athletes have been condi-tioning and most of them continue to play softball off-season as well. Our mentality, as a program, is to compete in everything we do, es-pecially in practice. >What is the best way parents can support their student ath-lete?

We love having family out to our games to support the girls! The best thing parents can do after a game is give their daughter a big old hug and let her know how proud they are, regardless of the final score

Symphonic and Concert Bands Shine at MSBOA FestivalHours of rehearsing in band class with Director of Bands Jeff McCoy led to a very successful experience at the MSBOA Festival for our stu-dents in Concert and Symphonic bands on Thursday March 10 and Friday, March 11.Both bands re-ceived high commendations from the concert adjudicators and the sight reading adjudicator for their fine work and both bands also re-ceived First Division ratings.

Winter guard Teams Spin Their Way to First PlaceAll three Athens winter guard teams – Alias Scholastic A, Alias AA and AKA – drew cheers from the crowd with first place, trophy-winning performances at their home show on February 27. Alias AA’s perfor-mance of “Timekeeper” earned a score of 65.91 in the AA division of the Michigan Color Guard Circuit. Alias Scholastic A earned a score of 71.58 for their performance “The Fighter.” AKA, the Athens affiliated middle school guard team, earned a score of 69.07 for their show “Stereo Hearts.” The competition drew guard and percussion groups from across the state and the Athens performers were thrilled to perform in front of the enthusiastic hometown crowd!

Alias Scholastic A fared well at their regional competition on March 12, taking 4th place out of 12 with a score of 76.24. The next step for all three groups is State Finals at Saginaw Valley State University on April 2. The Scholastic A team will also compete at the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Champi-onships in Dayton, Ohio in April.

Flamingos Prepare for a Spring ReturnMany Troy families were lucky to find a flock of pretty pink flamingos grac-ing their front lawns last fall before the birds migrated to warmer cli-mates for the winter. The flamingos will return soon, so watch your next Athens newsletter for word of their arrival in Troy.
