It was a delight to welcome so many parents to our P&C meeting last Monday night. It was very encouraging to have such a good attendance. It is extremely important to have a broad cross section of parents at our meetings because then the decisions that are made are reflective of many parents wishes and not just a few.

My congratulations to our new P&C executive: Mr Denis Howard - President Mrs Keri MacGregor - Secretary Mrs Vivienne King - Treasurer I am looking forward to working with you to do the best for our children.

Michael Grose has recently released an article, ‘Teach Children to Persist’. The ability to persist at a task and see it through to the end is one of the most important success attributes that you can develop in a child.

There are numerous times every day when young children must persist rather than give in. A young child learning to tie shoelaces must persist. A primary aged student must show determination to finish tasks.

Children need to be able to persist when work gets tough. They need stickability to work

through difficulties and hang in there when things don't go their way.

Some children are more naturally predisposed to persist than others. However, persistence is one temperamental factor that can be improved over time. Parents and teachers can develop persistence or impede its development by making life too easy for children so that they don't have opportunities to persist or hang in there!

Parents and teachers can promote persistence by encouraging their children to keep going and not give up at the slightest hurdle.

Words such as ‘you can do it’ are far more powerful in promoting an attitude of persistence than, ‘if it's a little hard try something else!’

Let children know there is a correlation between effort and success. By giving effort they are more likely to experience success.

Next week I will provide useful strategies to promote a sense of persistence in children.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs Breaden

CONFIDENCE What is Confidence? Confidence is having faith in something or someone. It is a kind of trust. When you have self-confidence, you trust that you have what it takes to handle whatever happens. You feel sure of yourself and enjoy trying new things. When you are confident in others, you rely on them and confide in them.

Why Practise Confidence? Without confidence, fears and doubts hold us back. We feel worried and uncertain, and afraid of making a mistake. With confidence, we try new things and learn all the time.

How Do You Practise Confidence? Practising confidence is knowing you are worthwhile whether you win or lose, succeed or fail. You feel sure of yourself and gladly learn from your mistakes. You don’t allow doubt or fear to stop you. You try lots of new things and discover what you are best at. You think positively. You have confidence in life, trusting that all things work together for good.

Dear Parents/Carers

A student in our school has been diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease. Apparently it is circulating in the pre-schools and some other schools in town. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a very common viral disease of childhood which is easily passed from person to person. It usually causes a mild illness. It is not at all related to the foot and mouth disease that affects animals. Good hygiene helps prevent infection.

It is highly contagious and students with hand, foot and mouth disease cannot attend school until all the blisters have dried.

SYMPTOMS: Blisters that start as small red dots which later become ulcers. Blisters appear inside the cheeks, gums, and on the sides of the tongue, as well as on the hands and feet. In infants, sometimes blisters can be seen in the nappy area. Blisters usually last for seven to 10 days.

Children can sometimes have a low fever, sore throat, tiredness, feel off colour and may be off their food for a day or two.

Very rarely, it can cause other illnesses that affect the heart, brain, lining of the brain (meningitis), lungs, or eyes.

DIAGNOSIS: The doctor can diagnose hand, foot and mouth disease based on the symptoms.

TREATMENT: Usually no treatment is needed. Paracetamol will relieve fever and discomfort. Do not give children aspirin. If the headache is severe, or if fever persists, consult a doctor.
