BY THE WAY •••

• Today across the United States we observe Mothers Day, an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and thank all the mothers, step mothers, foster mothers, grandmothers, godmothers - in a word, all the women who have played significant roles in our lives by bringing us to birth, and nurturing us physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Whenever the Church refers to itself, it always describes itself as "Holy Mother Church," relying on the successful nurturing of countless millions of women over the ages to help convey the actual role of the Church as a nurturing mother. In other words, the Church counts on women to bat across an adequate description of itself.

When parents bring children for Baptism, the Church prays separate blessings for the mothers and the fathers at the end of the Rite. I am happy to pray that same blessing at our Masses this weekend on Mother's Day:

God the Father, through His Son, the Virgin Mary's child, has brought joy to al/ Christian mothers as they see the hope of eternal life shine on their children. May He bless the mother of this child. She now thanks God for the gift of her child. May she be one with him (her) in thanking God forever in heaven. Amen.

Happy Mother's Day!

• We extend the sympathy of the entire parish community to our former pastor, Monsignor George Hundt, on the death of his good father, George F. Hundt, Sr. who died unexpectedly last Friday, May 5, at the age of 85. Monsignor Hundt's address is 26 Green Village Road, Madison, NJ 07940.

• The Easter Season brings with it an overflow of Sacramental activity - Communions, Ordinations, Weddings - in the life of the Church. Over the past three weeks, some 102 of our younger parishioners received their First Holy Communion. Congratulations to them and to their parents and families who have helped to bring them to this day.

Congratulations as well- and thank you - to the catechists who helped prepared the children - Samantha Adams, Dina Fiorita, Lynn McMurray, Amy Roughgarden, and Tara Schneider - as well as Sister Betty Ann Martinez, F.M.A., our Religious Education Director and Diane Brown, her assistant, and all who helped prepare our children for this big day.

Finally, I also extend our congratulations to Deacon Joseph Boykow who was ordained a transitional Deacon by Bishop Serratelli yesterday at Saint Peter the Apostle Church in Parsippany. Joe was with us last summer at Saint Anthony's as a seminarian summer assignment. Please remember Joe and his classmates during this year of final preparation for the priesthood.

• Just a five weeks ago I reported that Pope Francis had approved the Beatification of an American priest from Oklahoma, Father Stanley Rother, who was martyred for the faith as a missionary in Guatemala in 1981. Now, barely a month later, the American Church has another Beatus. This past week Pope Francis gave his approval to a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father Solanus Casey, O.F.M.Cap. {1870-1957}. A native of Oak Park, Wisconsin, Casey was one of sixteen children in an Irish Catholic immigrant farming family. As a seminarian he had great difficulties academically, and was

dismissed from the Milwaukee Archdiocesan seminary, and after contacting a number of orders, he was finally admitted into the Capuchin Franciscans. In spite of these difficulties, he persevered and was ordained a priest in 1904, but as what was then called a simplex priest - without the faculties to preach or hear Confessions. After a number of years in New York City, he was sent to Detroit where he would remain for three decades. In Detroit he served the monastery as "porter," or doorman. There, in the midst of the Great Depression, he began to acquire a reputation for assisting people with their physical and spiritual needs. People would line up at the door of the monastery to seek his counsel. People said, "when Father Solanus prayed for something, things happened!" Several miracles were reported even before his death. Thousands of his clients showed up for his funeral in 1957. This Fall, Blessed Solanus Caey will be beatified in a ceremony at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. He will join the roster of sixteen other Americans saints and blesseds.

• In just five weeks it will be time, once again, for Saint Anthony's 37th Annual Feast! Earlier this Year, when I was looking through pictures of The Feast for a brochure, I was struck by how much fun all the volunteers have at The Feast. We have dozens of pictures of smiling parishioners manning their booths and games. It reminded me of what Joan Elia constantly tells me each year - "it's not about the money." The Feast is about celebrating our parish, enjoying each other's company, and checking up on old friends.

If you have not yet sent in your volunteer form, please consider where and when you cam be part of the fun!

• As part of the centennial of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima this weekend, , and Mary's call at Fatima to find in her heart a doorway to her Son, Bishop Serratelli has decided to consecrate the Paterson Diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He has asked each parish to pray the same consecration at all Masses this weekend. I invite you to pray and reflect on the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

O Mary, chosen by the Father from all eternity, you offer us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb, the Word made flesh the world's Redeemer. On the cross, your Son gave you, his own Mother, to be our Mother, entrusting us to your loving care. Therefore, in obedience to his will, this day, we kneel in humble prayer before you, placing ourselves, our families, our loved ones, our entire diocese in the shelter of your Immaculate Heart. By this act of consecration, we, like John the Apostle, wish to take you into our homes and lives.

Most Holy Virgin, at the Annunciation you became the first disciple, accepting Jesus into your life. Now, assumed into heaven you do not abandon all who follow Jesus, but accompany us on the way of discipleship. Plead for us with your beloved Son that he may give us in abundance the Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith increase our hope, and inflame our charity. Be with us in trial and suffering, in joy and happiness, every moment of our lives and most especially, at the hour of our death.

o Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth, you know our sufferings and hopes. Look kindly upon all peoples and all nations and, by your powerful intercession lead them to Christ the Prince of Peace. Mary, Joy of Fatima, you see our struggles between good and evil, between light and darkness. Embrace, with the love of a mother each of us who entrust and consecrate ourselves to you. To you, Dawn of Salvation we commit our life journey, so that with you as guide, we may truly know and follow Christ, the light of the world and its only Savior, who reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

God bless you all, Father Ray

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 6:1 7 During the early growth of the Church, the apostles realized that they needed more dis-ciples in order to carry out effectively the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven men, one of whom was Ste-phen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4 9 Citing many uses of the word “stone” in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be “living stones...an edifice of spirit.” Gospel: John 14:1 12 In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

St. Anthony’s Religious Education is an integral part of our parish. Our goal is to help families, child and parents, establish a sense of belonging to a Faith Community. Parents and catechists working in partnership, strive to develop a faith that is alive in each child. Active participation of the family in weekly worship, prayer, performing good works and attending class, all contribute to nurturing the faith. This is also reinforced by reminding the families to bring their food items to help our parish pantry. Ordinary people volunteer to become extraordinary teachers of the various grades. It is a commitment to passing on the faith. We see the dedication of these catechists and are inspired by their continued giving. Special thanks and a shout-out to all the Sunday and Monday catechists and teacher aides and staff, who have given of their time and talents to bring God’s Word to the children this past year. Our Religious Educa-tion program is vibrant because of their dedication.

This year, after some 30 years, one of our catechists, Felicia Perini, is retiring. Her dynamic zeal and enthu-siasm has nurtured many children in the faith. Her creativity, always thinking of new ways to reach the young, has been an inspiration. We want to thank her for her years of service in passing on the faith. We wish her the best and ask the Lord to bless and reward her! Join me in thanking God for her 30 years of ser-vice to our children. And if anyone is inspired to join our Religious Education for Sunday or Monday, as a teacher, aide or helper, please call Sister Betty Ann at 973-427-7873 or email her at [email protected] Thank you. God bless you!

The Virtue of Charity Consider this: whoever sows

sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.

As it is written: "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."

The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the Harvest of your righteousness.
