Metternich, leads the Congress of Vienna.

• Distrusted the Revolution, • Prevent French aggression

by surrounding it with stronger countries.– Contain France

• Restore a balance of power. (Alliances)

• Restore Europe’s royal families.

Legitimacy

• France required to give up all territory gained under Napoleon.

• Fair treatment for all, no grudges.

• Allowed peace until 1853 (Crimean War)

Conservative Europe• Alliances form between

Absolutist rulers.• Concert of Europe added to the

alliance system, aid would arrive for any conflict between powers.

• However, Enlightenment ideas were out there, and new philosophies emerge.

• Constitutional Monarchy is maintained in England and France.

• Russia, Prussia, and Austria maintained Absolutism.

Political Changes Beyond Vienna• Three Philosophies Dominate.• Conservatism

– A desire for absolute rule, or rule of a Monarch.

• Liberalism– Wanted more rights, voting

for the middle class and more power given to Parliament/Chamber of Deputies.

• Nationalism– A pride for country emerges,

and this would lead to conflict.

Discussion: For five minutes, quietly write as much as you know about the 1800s, World War I, and Patriotism.

I guarantee I can relate 90% of events in that 100-year span to the Congress of Vienna. Our discussion today will show how one event can begin a chain reaction towards World War.
