It's both a privilege and honour for me to preside the "Minimally Invasive and Ambulatory Surgery Congress", inherent to the "Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio" being chosen to organise it locally.

Mighty task, but a successful one thanks both to a strong and competent team, and the ever present support of the social forces of the Algarve, specially the Civil Government, Tourism Authority, and Mayors of Portimao, Lagos, Lagoa, Silves and Monchique. To all, my most sincere gratitude.

I hope that the chosen topics will fulfil your expectations, and that, by the end of the Congress you'll be up to date with the most recent advances and new developments on the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery.

A Associação Portuguesa de Cirurgia Ambulatória (APCA) em conjunto com a Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva (SPCMIN) organiza em Maio de 2011 o seu I Congresso, que tem por principal objectivo, a discussão da convergência do conceito de acto cirúrgico associado à mini-invasão e ambulatório.

O principal factor de sucesso e de desenvolvimento da Cirurgia Ambulatória, é a sua característica multidisciplinar e este será um dos principais tópicos a ser desenvolvido neste Congresso.

A Cirurgia Ambulatória nos últimos anos ocupa uma posição de destaque e de liderança nos programas de Cirurgia electiva. Devido a procedimentos menos invasivos, técnicas anestésicas mais eficientes, melhoria de cuidados pós-operatórios e de aspectos de organização, espera-se que este crescimento e desenvolvimento se mantenham no futuro.

Esta parceria entre as 2 sociedades, em que ambas envolvem diferentes especialidades Médicas e profissionais ligados à área da Saúde, pretende divulgar e promover toda a actividade que se desenvolve no nosso país nestas duas áreas. A realização em simultâneo da reunião da MMESA irá permitir reunir grandes referências Mundiais em diferentes áreas da Medicina e Cirurgia Internacional.

Nesta Reunião será apresentado o estado da arte da Cirurgia de Ambulatória e exploradas as futuras possibilidades para as técnicas cirúrgicas minimamente invasivas e seus avanços tecnológicos, estando seguro que registará uma elevada participação e um elevado nível científico.

Aproveito para dar as boas-vindas a todos os participantes neste 1º Congresso e agradecer à região do Algarve, à cidade de Portimão e à Comissão Organizadora Local, por todo o empenho colocado na organização deste evento, assim como a todos quantos apoiaram e tornaram possível esta iniciativa.

The Associação Portuguesa de Cirurgia Ambulatória (APCA) in cooperation with Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva (SPCMIN) organize in May 2011 its First Congress together, with its main objective related with the discussion of the convergence in the concept of the surgical procedure associated with mini invasion and ambulatory regimen.

A mandatory part of the success of ambulatory surgery is the multidisciplinary approach and this will be an important topic during the Congress.

Ambulatory surgery is taking a leading position in the area of the elective surgery. Due to the less invasive surgical procedures, more efficient anesthetics and improved postoperative care and management, we can expect this development to continue in the future.

This combination between the 2 societies, both involving different Medical specialities and medical professionals, intends to promote all the work that is done in our country in both different areas. The promotion at same time of the meeting of MMESA, will permit to bring and join in Algarve, important international Medical and Surgical references.

We will present the state of the art in ambulatory surgery and explore future possibilities for the minimal invasive surgical techniques.

It is a pleasure to invite and welcome all participants to the 1st Congress of APCA and SPCMIN in Portimão – Algarve. We would like also to thank to the region of Algarve, the city of Portimão, and the LOC all the support to this event.

Como Presidente em exercício da MMESA (Mediterranean and Middle East Endoscopic Surgery Association), é com o maior prazer que vejo ter lugar em Portugal o “Spring Meeting” desta Sociedade. É a primeira vez que a MMESA tem uma reunião científica em Portugal e outra está programada; será o Congresso Anual desta Sociedade marcado para 2013.

A MMESA tem a particularidade de cobrir uma extensa área geográfica, com diversas culturas e civilizações que, apesar de tudo estão ligadas, de forma importante, pelo mar e pela história.

A Associação tem o propósito principal de desenvolvimento do conhecimento científico dentro da área da Cirurgia Endoscópica, promovendo troca de conhecimentos e procurando elevar o nível e a qualidade da cirurgia praticada entre todos o s 33 países membros. Também há um lugar de destaque para a Educação e Treino, havendo vários projectos em desenvolvimento e a criação de Centros Internacionais de Treino que serão regionais e que cobrirão o território geográfico dos países da MMESA.

É uma Sociedade bi-lingue (inglês e francês) e é com grande entusiasmo que vemos a sua integração numa Reunião Científica “Major” portuguesa e a interacção e colaboração entre os diversos membros das Sociedades envolvidas. Esperamos no futuro ver mais eventos que contribuam para a aproximação entre várias Sociedades e a promoção de acções conjuntas.

Apesar da independência das Sociedades científicas relativamente a quadros políticos e religiosos, não posso deixar de lamentar a situação existente em alguns países do Norte de África e do Médio Oriente, todos eles membros da MMESA. Não só há sofrimento entre as populações locais mas também a comunidade cirúrgica se ressente. No caso presente, vários membros informaram da sua impossibilidade em estarem presentes no “Spring Meeting”, por razões de logística do País, prejudicando-se, portanto, de forma marcada o conteúdo científico, participativo e de convívio, deste Congresso multidisciplinar e multi-societário; acresce a preocupação de podermos ser obrigados a, pelo menos, adiar algumas das acções que tínhamos preparadas. Tenhamos esperança na dimensão humana de todos os envolvidos, com rápido estabelecimento de paz e estabilidade.

Dear Colleagues

As President of MMESA (Mediterranean and Middle East Endoscopic Surgery Association), seeing this Association’s “Spring Meeting” happening in Portugal gives me great satisfaction. This It is the first time MMESA has a scientific meeting in Portugal and, another one is programmed; it will be the yearly Congress of this Society, scheduled for 2013.

MMESA has the particularity of covering an extensive geographical area, with many different cultures and civilizations which, despite everything, are connected in an important way, by the sea and by History.

MMESA has, as main purpose, the development of scientific knowledge within the field of Endoscopic Surgery, promoting an exchange of knowledge and trying to raise the level and quality of surgery performed within its 33 member countries. Also important is Training and Education, existing several projects running and being about to create International Training Centres which will be regional and which will cover the whole territory of MMESA countries.

It is a bi-lingual (English and French) Society and it is very exciting to see it integrated in a “Major” Portuguese scientific event, as well as the interaction and cooperation of the members of the involved Societies. We hope to see in the future, more events contributing to an approach between several Societies and having these promoting events in togetherness.

Despite the independence of scientific Societies in what relates to political or religious matters, it is paramount for me to mention the sad situations we are witnessing at these critical times in some countries of Northern Africa and of Middle East, all of it members of MMESA. Not only the local populations suffer but also the surgical community is hindered. In our case, several members have informed of their impossibility in coming to the “Spring Meeting” because of local logistics, and thus, we see markedly prejudiced the scientific, participative and social contents of this Congress, multidisciplinary and multi-associative; to this, is added the worries we have of risking to have to postpone, possibly, some of our already planned actions. Let’s have hope in the human dimension of all who are involved, with a fast return to peace and stability.

Quero dar-vos as boas vindas a este 4º Congresso Nacional da SPCMIN e desta vez escolhemos Portimão como cidade representante do Sul de Portugal.

Pela 1ª vez na nossa curta história de vida optámos pela organização conjunta com outras duas Sociedades, dentro da filosofia desta Direcção, de reunir esforços e recursos para maximizar o nosso objectivo último: o desenvolvimento da cirurgia minimamente invasiva em Portugal.

Alargámos o âmbito da cooperação com outras organizações convidando a Sociedade Espanhola de Cirurgia Laparoscópica como colaboradora activa deste evento e ao mesmo tempo internacionalizámos ainda mais esta reunião científica integrando a MMESA na organização.

A realização deste Congresso só foi possível com o apoio total e para lá do previsível, numa altura de grandes dificuldades, de todos os poderes políticos locais nomeadamente as Câmaras de Portimão, Lagos, Lagoa, Silves e Monchique, a Região de Turismo do Algarve e o Governo Civil de Faro.

O comprometimento activo e participado de todos estes organismos constitui um acontecimento histórico para as reuniões científicas em geral e para a Cirurgia em particular.

“The last but not the least” é o nosso agradecimento profundo a todas as empresas da Industria Farmacêutica e de Material Hospitalar e Cirúrgico que são o suporte financeiro desta organização. It´s my pleasure to welcome you to this 4th National Congress of SPCMIN and we have chosen Portimão as the representative city of South of Portugal.

By the first time in our small life story we have decided by a joint work with more two SocietiesFollowing our philosophy to put together efforts and resources to maximalise our aim: the development of minimally invasive surgery in this country.

We have also invited Spanish Society of Laparoscopic Surgery to be a collaborator Society in this meeting and we have tried a more international structure integrating MMESA in the Organization.

All this work had been possible only with the total support and unthinkable in these times of recession of all political local powers, namely Municipal Councils of Portimão, Lagos, Lagoa, Silves and Monchique, Algarve Tourism Region and Civil Government of Faro.

The active and participated compromising of all these organisms is an historical event in the area of scientific meetings, particularly in surgical field.

“The last but not the least” is our enormous thanks to all enterprises of Surgical and Hospitalar Products and Pharmaceutics. It´s a very special thanks from my personal point of view and also on behalf of this Society, because we understand what means your help in these disturbing times.

To all the participants who are the main reason of this event our thanks because you have said “Yes we go” and I hope you can return to your hospitals and clinics and relatively to Minimally Invasive Surgery practice you´ll say “Yes we can (do it)”.

Mais uma vez o Algarve e em particular o Barlavento Algarvio será o anfitrião de um evento de cariz científico, neste caso, resultante da fusão de esforços da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva, com a Associação Portuguesa de Cirurgia do Ambulatório e da Sociedade Mediterrânica e do Médio Oriente de Cirurgia Laparoscópica. De 26 a 28 de Maio recebemos no Centro de Congressos do Arade, Ferragudo, o Congresso de Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva e do Ambulatório que contará com a presença de cerca de 100 oradores de prestigiado renome nacional e internacional.

É com enorme satisfação que o Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio se associa a este grande evento presidido pelo um elemento da nossa organização que sempre pugnou pela Cirurgia de Ambulatório e naturalmente pela Cirurgia Minimamente Invasiva: Dr. Mahomede Americano.

Este será um Congresso em que a partilha de saberes teóricos e práticos e a partilha de experiências fomentarão o crescimento académico de todos os participantes. Once more, the Algarve and particularly the western Algarve is the host of a scientific event, in this case, the sum of merged efforts of the Portuguese Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery, with the Portuguese Association of Ambulatory Surgery and the Society and the Mediterranean Middle East Laparoscopic Surgery. From 26 to 28 May we received at the Arade’s Congress Centre, in Ferragudo, the Congress of Minimally Invasive Surgery and the Ambulatory Surgery that will have about 100 prestigious speakers with national and international reputation.

It is with great satisfaction that Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio, is associated with this great event chaired by a member of our organization who have always fought for Ambulatory Surgery and, of course, the Minimally Invasive Surgery: Dr. Mahomede Americano. This will be a Congress in which the sharing of theoretical and practical knowledge, sharing experiences will increase the academic skills of all participants. It is with particular joy that "Beyond- Arade," I see the various medical specialties united in quest of new techniques that will help to care for users with greater expertise, higher quality and less aggressive.

I wish you all a profitable stay with us and hopping that the sun and the sea of the Algarve are an inspiration for a more promising future in this vast and promising area.

The eighteenth century building Sárrea Prado is one of the noble spaces of the city. It is located in the centre of Portimão. TEMPO is also a clear example of a successful recovery that contributed to the development of a city area. This is a space designed for people to get in touch. Areas such as the music-hall or the foyer were not neglected, providing the right atmosphere for fado and jazz concerts, gatherings, as well as book launches. A place where leisure and education hold hands. Children are the main visitors of this farm. Here they discover what life is like in the countryside apart from the city life nowadays. With a total area of around two hectares with horses, cows, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens and rabbits, among many other animals. At the same time, the farm is taking its first steps in hippotherapy activities.

Portimão possui dois tipos de zonas costeiras bastante diferentes que, consoante as suas características, apresentam espécies de fauna e flora distintas. Sugerimos-lhe uma viagem da Praia da Rocha até à Praia dos Três Irmãos, este percurso é constituído por arribas e falésias escarpadas de rochas calcárias que acabam abruptamente no mar, ou que se encontram separadas deste por algumas extensões de areia. Um passeio que lhe permite desfrutar de paisagens de grande beleza.

PERCURSO ROCHA > ALEMÃONeste percurso que se pode iniciar junto ao molhe da Praia da Rocha, ou na Praia do Alemão, há a presença constante de arribas de belas tonalidades que remontam ao Miocénico (23 a 5 milhões de anos). Esculpidas pelo tempo, as falésias rendilhadas por arcos e grutas são formadas por rochas calcárias onde se podem observar fósseis de conchas de bivalves, nomeadamente de arcas, vieiras e ostraídeos.No topo das falésias por entre a vegetação é frequente avistar diversas espécies de aves. Se vier cá no Verão, não fique surpreendido quando ouvir o ruidoso bailado de bandos de andorinhões-reais ou o canto melodioso do melro-azul, espécies que nidificam nas saliências e fendas da arriba. Tipo de percurso: linear / Dist.: ~3,5 km / Duração: ~1h / Dica: levar roupa e calçado ligeiros, água e algumas peças de fruta da época.

There are two distinctly different types of coastline in Portimão and the fauna and flora found there vary depending on the characteristics of each area. One, stretching from Praia da Rocha to Praia dos 3 Irmãos consists of rises and steep cliffs of limestone which either fall sharply into the sea or are separated from the water by stretches of sand. A walk along our suggested routes for either section of Portimão’s coastline will give you the chance to appreciate some truly stunning scenery.

P1 - ROCHA > ALEMÃO ROUTEYou can start this route either at the Praia da Rocha breakwater or at Praia do Alemão. All along the route you can appreciate the attractive hues of the cliffs that date back to the Miocene age (23 to 5 million years). Intricate arches and grottoes have been carved out of the limestone rock by the passage of time, and fossilised bivalve shells can be observed including ark shells, scallops and oysters. A number of species of birds can frequently be seen amid the cliff-top vegetation. If you visit during the summer, don’t be surprised to hear the noisy cries of the Alpine swift, or the melodious song of the blue rock thrush, both of which nest on ledges and in cracks on the cliff.
