Future Thinking This programme is designed to develop a range of thinking strategies and skills in our students,
which will not only assist them with their study here at SGHS, but also with their future study and
careers. Examples of lessons include goal setting, research, time management, different types
of thinking, study skills, and strategies for generating and organising ideas.
Gifted and Talented Programmes Gifted and Talented students are identified by whanau/parents, class teachers and through self-
selection. Students can then choose to extend themselves by studying at a higher level or
undertaking a specialist area. Minds Alive is also available as a course that Year 8 students can
be selected for, and Year 9 and 10 students can opt into.
The programme uses the University of Cambridge International Examination Syllabus in Global
Perspectives. Students are given the opportunity to enquire into and reflect on the accelerating
changes in the world that impact on us. The emphasis is on extending the skills and thinking
that active citizens and leaders of the future will need. Year 7 students, like Year 8 students, are
extended through their Inquiry based Learning Packages. Students are encouraged to take
ideas further into individual actions. We offer opportunities to join a number of workshops during
the year, competitions, spelling, writing, mathematics and computing examinations also in
International forums.
Qualifications – NCEA NCEA is offered to all students. The Level 1, 2 and 3 certificates are usually studied for all years
11, 12 and 13. However, some of our students choose to accelerate and sit NCEA earlier and
some choose to do NCEA over 2 years, such is the flexibility of learning at SGHS.
Cambridge
Cambridge IGCSE is offered to the extension band of English, Mathematics and Science at Year
10. It is seen as preparation for Level 1 NCEA, giving the grounding in thinking and content to
allow students to reach their personal excellence. Challenging your learning and extending your
potential can be a part of your Year 10 year. Students in the extension Year 10 English, Science
and Maths classes study the Cambridge International Examination Syllabus for 14-16 year olds
all over the world.
Literacy A whole school planned initiative for every student to use reading, research and writing material
more effectively in order to achieve their best.
Numeracy The development of number and thinking strategies to improve mathematical learning through
Years 7 to 10.

A quality learning community where relationships count and excellence
is expected.
ERO’s Voice Education Review Office
“The school’s vision of ‘a quality learning community where relationships count and excellence is expected’, is highly evident throughout the school. The Board, Senior Leaders and Teachers have high expectations for the achievement of all students. Students are actively encouraged and supported to aspire to and achieve their own level of personal excellence”.
“There is a strong focus on developing effective relationships with and between staff and students. Staff are collegial and work together for the benefit of all students. Teachers are purposefully involved in the plans and targets for school-wide improvements. Students’ ideas and opinions are making an increasingly important contribution to decisions about their learning”.
“A strong focus is placed on providing for individual learning pathways for students to meet their level of challenge, need and interests. This is supported by flexible timetabling and multi-level teaching. Students’ learning benefits from curriculum breadth, a wide range of opportunities in and beyond the school, and co-operation between departments”.
“Senior Leaders and Teachers use a wide range of learning information to inquire regularly into how effectively plans and initiatives support the school to improve. They track the progress of students to ensure that value is being added to their learning. Senior leaders also regularly monitor progress towards meeting achievement targets”.
“Achievement information shows that National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) pass rates are above national comparisons for similar schools. In Years 9 and 10, school achievement information for 2012 shows that most students are achieving at or above curriculum expectations for reading and writing. In Years 7 and 8, most students are achieving at or above the National Standards in reading, writing and mathematics”.
NZQA’s Voice
1. “The school’s focus of learning as enquiry provides opportunities for all students to experience
success based on fair, credible assessment that recognises best performance”.
2. “Another focus of the school is on the learning performance of each individual student”.
3. “Another way the school meets student assessment needs is by providing flexible course delivery.
Students are able to select the level of their learning and assessment in English, Mathematics and
Science”.
“…Visionary” “…Relationships”

Parent Voice – Why their daughters attend SGHS
“Friendly, welcoming school, strong leadership and excellent staff. The school has a ‘great feel’ to it with impressive academic results”.
“Excellence is expected at SGHS, and is achievable”.
“My daughter liked the idea that it was where her aunties, mother, grandmother and sister had attended, and I like that it’s a girls school where the teachers solely concentrate on providing what works best for our girls learning”.
“…Because I came here and absolutely loved it – they were the best years of my life”.
“We were impressed with the mix of traditional values and the modern approach to educating young women. My daughter felt a strong sense of belonging right from the Open Day and the subject choice of Dance and Performance was appealing to her”.
“Our family thought the key points for choosing SGHS were the schools marketing and promotion, (we were really impressed with the Open Day, private tour and Parent Information night), reputation, relationship values and leadership”.
“We went to the SGHS Open Day in 2011. Our first stop was the ‘languages’ room and from there out into the hallway my daughter said “Mum, this is where I’m going – I love the school already, it’s definitely for me!!” She started year 7 at SGHS this year, she has gone from strength to strength and loves the school, her teachers, new friends, a whole range of new subjects, brilliant facilities, and what feels like a very bright future for her high school years”.
Student Voice – from the 2013 Year 7 and 8’s
“I really liked the warm welcome I got on Open Night. I kind of felt like I already belonged here because everyone
spoke to me.”
“I chose SGHS because I work better without boys. I found that boys distracted me at primary school and I need to
be able to focus on my learning.”
“I loved the shoes!”
“I liked visiting the special classrooms on Open Night like the Science Lab and Sewing Room. Now that I am here I
really like that I get to learn in these specialist rooms with expert teachers!”
“The Habits of Mind, Learning Habits as well as Homeroom and my Learning Package classes are all really helping
my learning. That makes me know that I made the right choice to come to SGHS.”
“SGHS seemed like a really fun school that was full of opportunities. We get to try new things every year. The
learning packages are awesome. My favourites so far have been VCD and Wellbeing in Year 7 and Design Station,
Performance and Physical Activity in Year 8. Camps are awesome too! I really like that our learning connects
between homeroom and other places. I have tried heaps of things too – Netball, Basketball, Badminton,
Waterpolo, SouthSpell, Smac Maths, Assembly Leader and Class Captain!”
“I think it is really good how we stay together as a class but move around the school together for classes.”
“I love that we have older girls take us for peer support, in our houses and as coaches. It is fun spending time with
them and it also helps me to see what my future is going to be like because I want to be like one of those girls.”
“I feel challenged and supported here to reach personal excellence in a really positive way.”
“Community Breakout is a great week but it is also linked to other things like the Citizenship Ceremony and the
learning packages. It helped me see that you can be yourself and have your own pathway. No one gets in your
way. They respect what you want to do and
support you to do it. That’s why SGHS is right for me.”
