    Love Can Transcend Time

EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST NINEYEARS or so, Cheryl Alleway has visitedwith her dear friend Deborah Douglas.

“What’s so noteworthy about that?”Youmight ask. “Lots of people spend timeeach day with a dear friend, especiallyif they live close by!”No argumentthere! But this relationship is just awee tad different! Cheryl lives in alovely, spacious, modern home onthe 20th Side Road on St. JosephIsland. Deb, on the other hand, lives in Scotland …14th Cen-tury Scotland, to be precise! How does she DO that?!

Deb’s life could be describedas being like an open book.According to her father,Jacob Douglas, Deborahwas born on August 28th,1309 to a poor familythat was constantlystruggling to survive inwar torn medievalScotland. They lived alife full of seeminglyendless toil, painand hardship, sur-rounded by ene-mies, ruffians andblackguards, whilst war raged ceaselesslybetween the Scots and the invading English armies.

That’s just the beginning premise of Cheryl’s just-releasedbook, “Of Blade and Valor” – an epic tale of a brave, iron-

willed Scottish lass, her family and her loves and thosewho share her struggles for freedom, for

love and for her homeland. Asthe online blog will tellyou, Deb faces it allwith the courage of aman and the heart of aScot!

We won’t reveal any morethan that. You’ll have tofind the rest out for yourself, but we’re quite sure thatyou’ll find “Of Blade andValor” to be more than just agood summertime read. – and an authentic Scots accent - for the Museum’s 50th An-niversary Tea last week.) and her husband Tyler at theirhome. We wanted to know more about “Of Blade and Valor”– how it came to be and where it will take us from here.

“I never thought I’d ever write a novel.Writing is just some-thing I love to do.” says the vivacious, energetic author. Thatlove goes back to her teenage days, when she and some of herart school friends would write and draw cartoons. “That’swhere my love affair with storytelling began.” she says.“Then, when I started meeting so many creative people incollege, it just went from there!”

After graduation, Cheryl started her career in the graphic de-sign field. “I originally wanted to do medical illustrating.” shetells us. “My grandfather was a fine artist and sign painter inthe Soo during the 1940’s. He was fromWales, hence the‘Celtic’ connection.” She went on to tell us how he named hiscompany SENO Signs, which was simply ‘Jones’ spelt back-wards, without the J, the idea for which came from hergrandmother, who was an English teacher.”

“So English, art, it all kind of stuck with me, which maybeexplains how I got here.” she chuckles. “There are a lot of‘artists’ in my family - my cousins, my aunts, and my motherwas very good. My father in-law is a metal artist. My mother-in-law owns an art studio in the Soo, so I have it on bothsides!”

“My dad was quite good too, but he didn’t want to followthat. He was on TV – as ‘Uncle Albert’ on the old MickeyMouse Club Show here in the Soo when I was just a baby! Hehates when I reference that, but I’m going to anyway!” shelaughs. “But that kind of storytelling, character, personality, entertaining type of thing has always been there.

“It was all just a big hodgepodge of creative things and, forsome reason, for me, it all eventually narrowed to writing asmy creative outlet. It’s all about story telling!” she explains.“Writing was something that just seemed to spur inside ofme, and as I met more friends with similar interests and tal-ents …it just all comes together to push you forward.”

Her love of Celtic themes started with stories she had heardabout her grandparents with their strongWelsh accents andwho were so stern and strict, yet also feisty, sturdy and rocksolid in their lives. It seems to us that there’s more than a lit-tle of them in Deborah Douglas!

Cheryl has always been fascinated by history, which helps toexplain her close ties with our Island Museum. Then, add ina trip by Cheryl and Tyler to Scotland, England andWales, where they saw and stood where history had been made, andit was done. The germ of an idea had flared and Fate had de-creed that it must be born.

We asked Cheryl to tell us how she actually goes about writing an epic novel like “OfBlade and Valor.” Did she, for example, write it all out by hand, or did she composeon the computer keyboard, as so many writers do. “I’m a little on the ‘hyper’ side” sheconfesses with a flutter of her eyelids. “I need something faster! I’m a ‘big, epic movie’kind of girl …orchestral music, big, open landscapes, almost like a ‘Lord of the Rings’atmosphere, particularly like old Scotland.” she confides. “When the time comes tostart a scene, I close my eyes, picture myself in the time and place, then yell “Action”! Ialso have a great respect for those who survived such a harsh and sometimes fatal

    lifestyle.”

And the book is seeing plenty of ‘Action’, fol-lowing its official release on July 12th to al-ready-strong critical acclaim. Cheryl’spublishing partner, TwistedWillow Presshas featured the new book on its latest on-line Book Tour and the literary Bloggers arehaving a field day, heaping praise and otherconstructive criticism on this initial offeringby such a promising young author.

The novel will be available in hard copy atselected outlets, such as Kent’s Corner, TheSt. Joseph Island Museum and possibly theFort, as well as at www.lulu.com or in e-reading format through Amazon.com.Cheryl will be scheduling a couple of booksignings around the area hopefully in themonths of August/September. Local friendswill be able to pick up a copy if they’re soinclined.

There’s no doubt that Cheryl’s connection with the book and its principal charactergoes far beyond ‘personal’. “All of the women in my life are poured into this woman!”she declares, gesturing at the book. Her emotions build as she recounts all of the peo-ple dear to her heart, like her late mother and her father who helped make her whoshe is today. She had to include her good friend and mentor, Janet Callahan who gaveCheryl words of wisdom through her early challenges. “She has been such a help andguiding hand for both Tyler and me…Tyler is my best friend. We are a team, but he isnot one for the spotlight.” she whispers.

So what’s coming next? Will there be a sequel to “Of Bladeand Valor?” Cheryl evasively looks up at the ceiling, squirms alittle in her chair then, clearly arriving at a decision on whatto say, firmly answers, “Yes, but it won’t be a typical se-quel…it will have even more adventure though and a bit ofmystery as it will be told in the first person by an unlikelycharacter. That’s all I’ll say for now. I’m still nurturing theidea.”

We think that the story of Deborah Douglas and those whoshare her life and adventures simply MUST continue. Cherylsees this first offering as a ‘work in progress’, not an ending. The story will go on from here. Eventually though, as forevery artist, all the research, the background work, the longhours, days and weeks of creating and re-creating eventuallymust come down to the point where the artist must forcethemselves to step back and say “That’s it! I’m stopping here!”

So Cheryl has stopped, at least for now. Her novel, into whichshe has poured her heart and soul for so long, now stands onits own, for better or worse. “I didn’t do this for the money.Anything else that comes is an extra gift. I am humbled bythis whole experience,” she tells us. “I had to tell this story …to get it out there.”

You’ve done that so very well, Cheryl.

THE MUSEUM WAS A DARK PLACE on July 19th 2013. Thelights were shut off so they could be upgraded. Phase 4 Electricsent in two young workers, Matt Madonna and DarrenMoreau. They updated the Barn, I-line school, and the Churchfrom the old lights. I asked Darren for more details on whatthey were doing, he replied, “We’re replacing the old T-12 withT-15.” Because I don’t have knowledge in this electrician lingohe was kind enough to explain. “These light bulbs are more ef-ficient; they don’t heat up as fast, and they don’t take as long tolight up.” I asked the other worker, Matt, a question I wasdying to know. How are we getting a FREE update (as freeseems too good to be true.) He replied “Under the grant, we’reto update small businesses to our more efficient lights. So farwe have updated four other small businesses in RichardsLanding.”

The workers informed me that the Museum’s electrical con-nectors were dangerously old. As I later learned, this is becausethe Museum has not had its lights updated since 1991. Theworkers showed me the evolution in the electrical connectorsfrom what the Museum was using, to what they were in-stalling. The first electrical connector is made from porcelain(which they have never seen before), the second one was so oldthat the inside had burnt out. The new ones, however, are plas-tic and significantly more efficient, safe, and reliable.

Now that the workers are all finished, the first thing I noticedwas the dramatic visual change. These lights’ colour are natu-ral and pure. It is much brighter, and our eyes have less tensionon them because there is no longer yellow artificial light. I amthankful that the workers and all the customers now get to seethe Museum in this new beautiful light. Everyone here at theMuseum would like to say a huge thank you for this update.

The Museum would also like to announce some more winnersfrom Tea Day. The costume contest results are: 1st Cheryl Alle-way, 1st Natalie Russell, and 1st Jeanette Russell. Also, theClansmen Hotel prize winner is (drum roll) Debbie Robert.Thank you for your participation and support.

ADSAB Seeks Public Input on itsHousing and Homelessness Plan

WHILE HOUSING ACROSS the ADSAB’s service area isgenerally affordable to rent or buy, seniors and people whoare at risk of homelessness often are not getting their housingand support services needs met.

That’s one of the findings of ADSAB’s proposed new housingplan. Titled Opening Doors to Better Lives, the report pro-poses four strategic directions and sixteen specific goals tobetter meet the needs of all residents for housing and sup-port services.

“This plan is a key step in making sure we work toward an ef-ficient system of housing and support services that puts peo-ple first,” says Lorraine Aelick, Chair of the Algoma DistrictServices Administration Board, which commissioned theplan. Keith Bell, the CAO notes, “By studying the district’shousing supply and demand patterns now; we can addressgaps and barriers, and deal with emerging needs. Essentially, this Housing and Homelessness plan will guide our businessplan for housing over the next 10 years.”

The district is seeking public input on the plan, which isavailable on the ADSAB’s websitehttp://www.adsab.on.ca/AdministrationSite_Housing_and_Homelessness.aspx

Comments will be accepted by email [email protected] until August 15, 2013.

Municipal politicians and staff, social and supportive hous-ing providers, support services providers, Aboriginal housingand support services providers, community agencies, advo-cates and other stakeholders were consulted for the plan. Asteering committee set up by the board guided its develop-ment.

The two-volume report includes an analysis of the supply ofdifferent kinds of housing for each municipality in theADSAB’s service area as well as demographic and economictrends that will influence demand for housing and commu-nity supports.

IT WAS A WONDERFUL DAY in every way. In spite of yearsof not always co-operating, Mother Nature smiled this time, giving the 27th annual Arts at the Dock show a picture perfectday with a gentle breeze to boot.

The streets of downtown Hilton Beach had already filled withcars and people when we arrived, and the people just keptcoming. We stopped first at the Community Hall, where 10exhibitors had a terrific assortment of beautiful things on dis-

play, from batik quilts and dolls through stone and stainedglass to pottery and photography.

Down at the dock was a happening place too, as the fabulousweather and the beautiful boats and marina as a backdropcombined to provide a jovial, festive spirit. Almost 30 artistsand artisans were on hand with a simply amazing variety ofitems to attract, dazzle and delight any eye.

Wafting through the sights and sounds was the alluring call of

It was a toughdecision, but then the rain stopped and the tea was on! Thenthe rain came back, forcing everyone to take shelter, huddledbeneath the garden tents.

The afternoon’s entertainment, the Rusty Strings fiddlegroup, vainly tried to keep their delicate instruments dry andin tune, dolefully eyeing the rivers of rainwater running offtheir tent and running down the necks of some members ofthe group. Eventually, they decided to start playing anyway, although many of the guests, located beneath other tents, surely didn’t hear them.

But then, things began to change for the better. The rain less-ened, then stopped altogether and guests emerged to chatwith others, enjoy some tea and stroll along the beautifully-kept paths and grounds of AdcockWoodland Gardens. Somestrollers, including a group from the Pathways RetirementResidence, led by the Island’s own Margaret Snider, stopped
