Although the final accounting remains to be completed, MMHA Board Chair SheilaCampbell is already very, very happy with the day’s results. Unofficially, we believe thetournament brought in a gross revenue total of $13,600 before expenses, making theeffort of so many volunteers, sponsors and golfers so worthwhile.

“I’m delighted with the results, which are all thanks to the hard work of so many dedi-cated people.” smiles Sheila. “It’s amazing to see the outpouring of support from somany people who want to help! They’ve all made such a huge differ-ence for our community. And we allhad such fun! I’m already lookingforward to next year’s tournament!”

AT A MEETING HELD ON JULY 14, 1934, the Plowmenof St. Joseph Island decided to organize a Plowmen’s Associa-tion and to name it The St. Joseph Island Plowmen’s Associa-tion. This historic moment was moved by Alex McNabb andseconded by Albert Hadden. Guy Rains was the first actingPresident. The first meeting had 51 members. At present thereare 24 members. Not all members plow; also some have re-tired from plowing.

The first match was held October 5, 1934 on the GeorgeSmedley farm (now the St. Joseph Township CentennialGrounds) on the corner of the 10th Sideroad and D Line. They also joined the Provincial Association at this time. MrHanalan was the first judge.

There were six Plowing Classes, most of which were horseplowing. Over the years, tractors have taken over, thus chang-ing the structure of the Classes. Today there are ten classes

with only one horse plowing class.

When the Plowing Match started, only Island residents wereallowed to plow at the Match. In 1955, women started toplow and there are still females plowing today. The first

woman plower was Shirley Rousseau followed by Bev(Bishop) McLean and (the late) Evelyn Bishop. HaroldBishop is the only member to have plowed at the Interna-tional Plowing Match. He plowed in 1952, 1953 and 1954.

The Match has been held every year from 1934 except 1942due to World War II.

At one time there were several Plowing Matches across Al-goma. The winners from each Match then competed togetherfor the District trophy. The St. Joseph Island Match is theonly one left in Algoma and one of only three left in North-ern Ontario.

The W.L. Miller Trophy is presented to the highest score inthe Junior Classes (10 yrs-20 yrs old). This trophy is the old-est trophy still in circulation at the St. Joseph Island PlowingMatch. Mr. Wilfred Lynn Miller, who lived in Bruce Mines, was MPP for Algoma –Manitoulin from 1934-1945.

The Bernt Gilbertson Trophy started in 1970 and is still incirculation. Bernt Gilbertson of St. Joseph Island was MPPfor Algoma- Manitoulin from 1967-1975. This trophy isawarded to the Plower with the best plowed land in the fieldby anyone.

Some of the trophies over the years have been retired and canbe seen at the St. Joseph Island Museum. New trophies havebeen donated so that each Class has a trophy. Prizes for thePlowmen have varied over the years. They have varied frommoney, grease, tires, bags of potatoes, hats, paintings, painted

Thank you!I’d like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone Iworked with during my 4 years at the Dr. Trefry Centre. Youtaught me what it is like to be part of a community. You tooka chance on me, encouraged me and inspired me.

To my husband who supports me in everything I do and whovolunteered to make the ultimate sacrifice and personallytaste tested all the desserts. To all the volunteers, who come inall kinds of weather, no matter how busy your lives are.

You brought in your favorite recipes and ones passed downfrom Grandma. You picked from your own gardens andbrought in fresh produce. We worked together, laughed to-gether and cried together. You are amazing.

To the drivers, the Winter Crew, the Summer Crew, the DinersCrew, the Peelers, the Setters, the Dishwashers, to the Legioncrew, to all the boys and girls. Thank you all, you are a verykind and caring family.

To Melinda, you’re always there. Always listening. Thank youmy friend and coworker. To Ruthie, pushing us in new direc-tions, ever expanding the programs. Thank you. And to myright arm girl, Sally. you are the yin to my yang. I couldn’thave done it without you.

This was truly the most fun I ever had at a “job”. Best TimeEver!!!

Miss you all. Together you are all the “A” team!!!

plow point and so on. The list is so varied but much appreci-ated from our donors.

At present, Thomas Murdock, a member of the St. Joseph Is-land Plowmen’s Association is President of The CanadianPlowing Organization.

The Plowing Match has been a main stay of many Island fami-lies and their friends. Many of the plowing families have beenand still are intergenerational. The late Herbert Underhill andhis son Jack plowed in the first Match. The descendants of thelate Herbert Underhill are the only families still plowing withtheir roots going back to the very first Plowing Match on St.Joseph Island.

Why do Plowers compete in plowing? To show off their artform and the thrill of competition. The Plowers are very com-petitive but really sports minded. They will stop their plowingto help a fellow Plower out if they run into a difficulty withtheir tractor or plow.

Why plow? The goals of the local match are to enhance the artof tilling the soil, the proper use and handling of the plow andtractor and to educate people about good stewardship of theland. These goals help showcase one part of farming. It teachesresponsibility and respect of man towards the machinery andthe land. This will ensure the production of food now and inthe future.

We are very proud of our Plowing Match and very thankful forpast and present supporters. Come join us as a plower or spec-tator on August 23. New plowers always welcome. New plow-ers please call 705-246-2679 for details. Spectators can askquestions of the Plowers; they are always glad to give or getyou the answer.

Due to weather conditions, the Match is moved to 2444 HuronLine (Hwy 548): The Murdock Farm. The match starts at 9am. For more information, check us out on Facebook St.Joseph Island Plowing Match or call 705 246-2679.

One request of the readers: if anyone comes across the Plow-men’s minutes from 1941-1961, we would like to have them ora copy of them. If any past trophies or prizes are found, theytoo would be appreciated. We can then complete our history. Thanks!

See you on Saturday. Everyone is welcome!

An old farmer was walking down the path to the pondwhen he spotted a bullfrog. He reached down and

grabbed the frog and started to put him in his pocketwhen the bullfrog said, "Kiss me on the lips and I will turn

into a beautiful farmers wife." Again the old farmerstarted to put the frog in his pocket. The frog asked,

"Didn't you hear what I said?" The farmer looked at thefrog and said," At my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

Don’t Mess with Chinese Feng Shui!OUR THANKS TO SEVERAL READERS who emailed usabout August 2014 being a very unique month – a phenome-non that you’ll see only once in your lifetime! The emailpoints out that the month of August 2014 has 5 Fridays, 5Saturdays and 5 Sundays, which is quite true.

The email states that “this happens only once every 823years.” The Chinese call it ‘Silver Pockets Full’ or ‘Money Bags’,based on the principles of Feng Shui. You are then instructedto send the email to your friends and in four days, money willsurprise you. If you don’t forward it, you could suddenly findyourself poor.

There’s just one problem …. that same email circulated lastyear for July 2013, which also had 5 of each day, as well as Au-gust 2010, October 2011, October 2010 and so on backthrough time.

Those months may be special, but only a little bit — nothingclose to 800 years’ worth of special. As do all months with 31days, they include five occurrences of three days of the weekthat follow a simple pattern which repeats every several years. Are you ready? Here we go!

Since August always has 31 days, and a week always comprisesseven days, August will include five Sundays, five Mondaysand five Tuesdays, any time that month begins on a Sunday(as it did in 2010). And, since a week has 7 days and a stan-dard calendar year consists of 52 weeks plus one day, Augustwill begin on a Sunday an average of once every 7 years ….not every 800 or 823 years.

Due to the irregularity caused by leap years, however, Augustdoes not begin on a Sunday exactly once every seven years;instead, the phenomenon follows a 6-5-6-11 pattern. That is,when August begins on Sunday, that event occurs again sixyears later, then five years later, then six years later, and finallyeleven years later, whereupon the cycle repeats. We’re ap-proaching the end of a cycle and thus the longest gap betweenoccurrences, but that gap is a mere eleven years, not eighthundred.

As for the “Money Bags” canard, there truly is a “money bag”in Chinese feng shui. However, it’s actually a cloth bag carriedby the Happiness Buddha rather than anything to do withforwarding emails or the number 5.

Here’s the big secret: To make your own cash-attracting FengShui “money bag,” use a colored ribbon to tie nine coins intoa square of cloth (both preferably red), then place your“money bag” on or near whichever spot in the house wheremoney is either received or generated. In other words, if yourpay cheque comes by mail, place it where you put incomingletters and packages; if your money comes via computer de-posit to your account, put it near your computer.

You could, of course, cover your bets to ensure your contin-ued good fortune, by sending money to the Island Clippings, but we can’t guarantee anything either … and there’s proba-bly laws against us even suggesting that.

By Stella Trainor

OVER NINETY DESCENDANTS of Patrick and ElizabethTrainor brought their families to the Island the weekend ofAugust 8, 9 & 10. Patrick, an orphaned Irish immigrant, isthought to have arrived in North America in 1846. Marriedwith four children, he and Elizabeth made the boat journeyto St. Joseph from Stephen Township, Huron County in 1884.Ultimately they had a family of seven children (William,Thomas, Gordon, Edith, Russell, Sandy and Millie), all ofwhom lived their lives on St.Joe or in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Hilton Beach Commu-nity Hall was the headquar-ters for two days ofcelebrating heritage, spend-ing time with close relativesand meeting distant ones.Representatives from everyearly branch attended – fromas far away as Italy and asclose as up the road. Monthsof planning by various familymembers ensured a weekendfull of interest and activityand a big welcome home.

Friday was spent on the Island Springs Golf Resort course fornine beautiful and challenging holes, followed by a fine timeof great food and refreshment. Having connected on an inter-net site, Evelyn Reid and Candy Stevens joined forces and un-dertook the ambitious task of publishing a comprehensivefamily tree record. First editions, covering five and six genera-tions of Trainors, were distributed by Candy to eager histori-ans. The book is an impressive volume, detailing as manyindividuals as could be tracked, lushly illustrated and docu-mented. A copy of the book has been donated to the museum

by the family and is available asa resource.

The kids were kept entertainedwith games, there was a hugefeast and as though there hadn’tbeen enough entertainment pro-vided by the guests themselves, several family members wereconscripted to provide an after-dinner concert. To everyone’sdelight the Trainor familydemonstrated they are a talentedgroup—bagpipers, drummers,Highland dancers, singers, pi-anists, violinists, guitarists, song-

writers and of course, a gifted

Sunday morning started early with breakfast prepared by theSt. Joseph Island Lions Club. Mountains of pancakes andsyrup were followed by the long-awaited dedication of astained glass window at Grace United church. Doreen Koprashand her congregation found room for the overflow crowd andextended a warm welcome. Many in the pews were directly re-lated to William and Mabel Trainor for whom the window isgiven, and the service was an occasion for reflection and grati-tude.

The same family was generously allowed access to the Duncan-Trainor home by the present owner – a very special opportu-nity. There was always room in Mabel’s heart and home forone more, and two of her offspring (Terry Trainor and Jean

(Trainor) Murphy) were back in their childhood home, ac-companied by younger family members who had never beeninside.

The hall was tidied and swept as cousins reluctantly bidfarewell to cousins and vowed to gather soon, but since thiswas declared the best family reunion ever, it will be hard to du-plicate. St. Joseph Island made some new friends and bur-rowed deeper into the hearts of the old ones.
