Welcome to the inaugural Chinatown Discovery Festival – a celebration of Chinatown, its story and its people.

The theme for our Festival in 2019 is ‘Connection’. The Broome community past and present is connected through our memories, our stories, our history, our experiences and living in the region we call home, and the Chinatown Discovery Festival is an opportunity to celebrate this.

It has been created to invite the community to reflect on Broome’s history and to celebrate our multicultural heritage and the stories that make this town special.

The inaugural Festival also serves as the official opening of the $13 million Chinatown Revitalisation Project in which the Shire of Broome and the WA Government have partnered to undertake significant upgrades to our streetscape, put in place exciting activation initiatives, and investigated long-term development opportunities to secure the future of Chinatown as the heart and soul of Broome.

But places have histories and meanings that go beyond the physical elements - places have identities. The Festival aims to help us all better understand Chinatown’s identity and its unique history, to uplift the soul and connect people to people.

Festival offerings include String Symphony, a 4m-high illuminated marionette puppet made from more than a kilometre of rope, a work that brings 12 people together to manipulate the ropes and tell the story of a pearl diver.

Returning to Broome is Sand Sculpture WA to create a piece that will capture the essence of our connection to history, our shared experience of the present and how as a community we will shape the future.

However, the majority of the Festival’s program has been created by Broome’s own cultural and artistic community with performance, dance, music, literature and visual arts on offer. We extend our thanks to all the organisations involved in making this Festival uniquely Broome and uniquely Chinatown. Broome Singers, Broome Performing Arts Co-Op, Sun Studios, Goolarri Media, Backroom Press, Theatre Kimberley and Kimberley Arts Network are just some of the organisations who engage people in our community and connect them to their creativity and to each other.

I hope you all visit Chinatown over the Festival weekend to enjoy what is on offer.
