Down  Syndrome  and  Art  Education  What’s  the  Connection?  

Individuals  with  Down  syndrome  typically  have  a  difficult  time  expressing  themselves  verbally.    However,  they  usually  possess  a  unique  ability  to  express  themselves  

through  the  fine  arts  (visual,  music,  theater).    

 

Points  of  interest    1. Down  syndrome  is  typically  generalized  as  “special  needs”.  

2. My  research  strategy  will  use  the  idea  of  Acute  Emotional  Perception.  

3. Self-­‐expression  and  opportunity  will  give  these  individuals  a  voice.  

4. There  is  a  global  group  of  talented  artists  that  have  and  celebrate  their  Down  syndrome.  

5. Strategies  can  be  incorporated  in  the  classroom  at  any  level.  

6. Attention  to  these  artist  and  their  learning  abilities  can  raise  awareness  for  Down  syndrome.
