Overview of the Semester
I respond best to short briefs, because I find it more stimulating for myself. I enjoy open briefs, but I can work equally as well with ones with clear outlines and demands.
This year in particular I have managed to harness my ideas more, and tone down my ‘hoarder’ problems I have had in previous years. Mostly manageing to catch the baby before throwing the bath water over the balcony.
I am a very indecisive person, but I think that the way I use design to help this is mainly in the development process, and from HAVING to let ideas go.
I enjoy designing around my interests, so for example I am doing some projects on the planets, the first being ‘Jupiter’s Moons’, next to be ‘Saturn’s Rings’
I have started to realise that a lot of my work is oriented around documentary content. I find the content of a design to be very important, as it is essentially my job to make a block of text interesting.
As I personally don’t like reading anything which is lumbered into a block letters (except Harry Potter of course) I find it interesting to learn new ways to play with hierarchy and reflect the content within the design. The down side is I do have to read it all initially, but I don’t mind if I get to design it, as when I am reading through, I can see what I want to emphasise.
I would like to expand into doing more editorial and exploring and playing with ipad apps, as much as I love print design and want to do more with all sorts of printing processes and formats, I feel that the opportunities to create great editorial for screen is there.
I will have an idea of what the final piece will look like before I start drawing anything, then as soon as I put pen to paper more ideas will start flowing.
When deciding on which design or format to put on screen I will have three to six different sketched designs, then I go with the one I feel most drawn too.
Once I have started to put key ideas on screen, I then do research, rather than at the beginning, as I will know what elements I am wanting to learn more about. Any project is a learning curve to me.
I generally find that minimal colour plays a great part in my designs, with only black white grey and a hint of a colour throughout. I like it that way.
