TEPIN SET TO SHOW OFF AT SPABy Blood-Horse Staff
Tepin's connection to Saratoga Springs. N.Y. dates
to her purchase from the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Sara-
toga select sale, and the champion turf female will
get another chance to show her brilliance at Sarato-
ga Race Course Aug. 13 in the $500,000 Fourstardave
Handicap (gr. IT) against the boys.
The upstate oval handed Tepin her toughest beats
last year; she lost the Diana Stakes (gr. IT) by a nose
to Hard Not to Like and missed the Ketel One Ballston
Spa (gr. IIT) a head from Dacita. But she has not lost
since then, capturing the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT)
over male rivals to cap 2015, and carries a streak of
seven straight wins for Robert Masterson into the turf
test at her wheelhouse mile.
Trainer Mark Casse confirmed Tepin's Fourstar-
dave run after the daughter of Bernstein worked
an easy four furlongs in :50.42 July 22 on Saratoga's
Oklahoma turf training course, with a five-furlong
gallop-out under regular rider Julien Leparoux.

SONGBIRD LOGS FIRST GALLOP AT SARATOGA Champion Songbird logged her first gallop over Saratoga Race Course's main track July 22.
ALBERTA DOWNS TAKES UNIQUE APPROACH TO RACES The simple sentence posted at 10:50 a.m. July 17 on the Alberta Downs Facebook page was not especially surprising to anyone following the twists and turns of the small track this summer: "There will be no racing today at Alberta Downs."
QUEEN'S PLATE TOP 3 RETURN IN PRINCE OF WALES The top three finishers in the Queen's Plate Stakes—Sir Dudley Digges, Amis Gizmo, and All On Red—are set to face off in the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes July 26 at Fort Erie.
Tepin, who won the June 14 Queen Anne Stakes
(Eng-I) at Royal Ascot last out and is targeting a run
in the Sept. 17 Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Can-IT), will be
joined in a Spa performance by fellow Casse trainee
Catch a Glimpse, who also shares a perfect record in
2016. The 3-year-old City Zip filly is 5-for-5 this year
after her front-running triumph in the July 9 Belmont
Oaks Invitational (gr. IT) and will target the Aug. 21
Lake Placid (gr. IIT).
"The plan is to run Tepin in the Fourstardave and
Catch a Glimpse in the Lake Placid," said Casse. "I
was kind of struggling with how we were going to get
Tepin to the Woodbine Mile.
"The only thing that would keep me from running
Catch a Glimpse here is how she handles the crowd.
This is a very unique place because the crowd gets so
close to you, and some horses can't handle it. She's
not like Tepin—Tepin doesn't care about anything."
Moments after Tepin worked, United Nations
(gr. IT) winner World Approval turned in a brisk
half-mile under Florent Geroux, going in :48.72 to
register the fastest of 25 turf works at the distance.
The grey gelding galloped out five furlongs in 1:01
and is targeting the Aug. 13 Arlington Million (gr. IT),
although he could go in the Aug. 27 Sword Dancer
(gr. IT) instead.
Over on the main track, grade I winner Noble Bird
breezed four furlongs in a sharp :47.66, second-fast-
est of 47 works at the distance. The move had Casse
thinking big with the 5-year-old, who was scratched
from the July 9 Suburban (gr. II).
"That was as good as I've ever seen Noble Bird
work," Casse said. "He may have earned himself
a ticket to the (Aug. 6) Whitney. We'll see how he
comes out of it. He just wasn't himself the morning
of the Suburban... but when the real Noble Bird
shows up, he can run with anyone."
Casse also has Bashford Manor (gr. III) winner
Classic Empire and Debutante Stakes winner Pretty
City Dancer pointed to the Hopeful (gr. I) and Spina-
way (gr. I) closing weekend at Saratoga. Both worked
four furlongs July 22 at Churchill Downs, with Classic
Empire going in a bullet :46 2/5. BH

SWEET LORETTA WINS SARATOGA'S SCHUYLERVILLEBy Myra Lewyn
St. Elias Stable's Sweet Loretta kicked off stakes
action at Saratoga Race Course with an impressive
victory in the $150,000 Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) for
2-year-old fillies July 22, opening day at the upstate
New York track.
The daughter of leading sire Tapit provided trainer
Todd Pletcher a sixth win in the six-furlong test after
she collared front-runner Made Me Shiver in the
stretch and drew clear to stay perfect in two career
starts.
After lunging at the start, Sweet Loretta settled in
sixth as Inspired Flight set a swift pace of :21.68 and
:44.79 through a half mile tracked by Made Me Shiver
in second. John Velasquez brought her four wide into
the stretch and she was full of run to chase down
Made Me Shiver, who took charge in early stretch.
Sweet Loretta ran her down on the outside and
gained control past the eighth pole and coasted to
a 4 1/4-length triumph. She finished the distance in
1:10.89 as longshot Fun came up to take second.
"Obviously there's a lot of speed but the track was
a little slow," Velazquez said. "But it worked out my
way. She did everything well. I talked to Todd (Pletch-
er) in the paddock before the race and he told me
she breaks well, (so) give her a chance and let her run
down the lane and that's what she did."
Sweet Loretta was bred by Ashview Farm and
Colts Neck Stable from the Bluegrass Cat mare
Ithinkisawapudycat, a half sister to Canadian cham-
pion Spring in the Air. She was a $750,000 weanling
purchase by Roma Farm via agent J. J. Crupi at the
2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She
started her career with a seven-length maiden tri-
umph June 18 at Monmouth Park.
"I told Johnny in the paddock, 'I don't think she's
as quick as some of these other fillies, just don't rush
her off her feet. Give her a chance to get her legs
underneath her.' It actually probably worked in her
favor that she didn't break well," Pletcher said. "They
went fast early but she ran professionally; she ran
into the dirt well. She kept gaining ground in the early
part of the race and put herself in a good position
coming off the turn."
Sweet Loretta paid
$10.80, $5.70, $3.70,
Fun returned $16.20
and $7.10, and Har-
lands Thunder paid
$4.80 to show.

ANCIENT SECRET REMAINS UNDEFEATEDBy Jeremy Balan
Alpha Delta Stables' Ancient Secret took another
step up in class and remained undefeated July 22
at Saratoga Race Course in the $200,000 Lake George
Stakes (gr. IIT)
The 3-year-old Kantharos filly now has four wins
from four starts and faced a boost in class each time.
She broke her maiden in a six-furlong turf sprint at
Belmont Park in October, took an allowance going
seven furlongs on the grass at Belmont in May, won
the Wild Applause in her stakes debut there June 19,
and aced her first two-turn test Friday in the Lake
George, finishing 1 1/4 lengths clear of Chad Brown
stablemate Elysea's World.
"She's a remarkable horse," Brown said. "She
always trained like a really quality animal, we just
gave her little incremental goals, and she's hit them
all. I wasn't quite sure about the two turns. I know
she's a top-class horse, but I was curious to see what
she was going to do when the gates opened and she
passed the test."
The New York-bred filly stalked the early leaders,
racing in fourth, moved three wide in the final turn
to get to even terms on the front end entering the
stretch, and outkicked the field heading for home.
Sky My Sky set the pace, clicking off fractions of
:24.15, :48.03, and 1:11.03 through six furlongs, be-
fore Ancient Secret took over to run a mile in 1:34.37
and finish off the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.35 under jockey
Irad Ortiz Jr.
Elysea's World closed from sixth to finish second,
a length ahead of closing longshot Outsider Art.
"I thought she ran terrific—probably didn't love
being inside there late in the race," Brown said of
Elysea's World. "Both fillies will go back in a graded
stakes somewhere."
The winner paid $6.40, $3.90, and $3.10 across the
board. Elysea's World brought $3.80 and $2.70, and
Outsider Art delivered $4.90 to show.
Sky My Sky tired to come in fourth, followed by
Thundering Sky, Gone Away, Baciami Piccola, and
Diamond Fields, to complete the order of finish.
Bred by Lambholm, out of the Notebook mare Pri-
vacy, Ancient Secret now has $259,200 in earnings. BH

MOHAYMEN 'FIT AND READY TO GO'By Blood-Horse Staff
Unraced since his fourth in the May 7 Kentucky
Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Shadwell
Stable's multiple grade II winner Mohaymen breezed
four furlongs July 22 in preparation for his upcoming
start in the July 30 Jim Dandy (gr. II) at Saratoga Race
Course.
Under exercise rider Rob Massey, the sophomore
son of Tapit worked in :47 3/5 over the synthetic sur-
face at the private Greentree Training Facility behind
Saratoga's main track. It was his fifth work in Sarato-
ga; he breezed over the main track each of the past
two weeks, including a five-furlong move in 1:00.79
July 15.
"He worked great," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.
"He's worked on both but we decided to go back here
because it's quieter and there's no one out there.
He's worked well there before so we decided to work
there. He's fit and doing great and ready to go."
Mohaymen suffered his first loss when fourth in
the April 2 Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I) pri-
or to a closing fourth in the Kentucky Derby, both
behind Nyquist. From there he was sent to the farm
for a checkup and brief freshening before rejoining
McLaughlin's stable.
"He's pretty much stayed the same. He's a light-
framed horse but he's a May foal so the chances
are he'll continue to mature and fill out over time,"
McLaughlin said. "He hasn't missed a beat. I'm not
worried about the time (between races). He went
home for three weeks and that was it. He's doing
great."
The 1 1/8-mile Jim Dandy is Saratoga's prep for the
Aug. 27 Travers Stakes (gr. I).
Also among several McLaughlin train-
ees that breezed at Greentree Friday
was Godolphin Racing's Frosted, clocked
in 1:00 3/5 for five furlongs. It was his
third work since his record-setting 14
1/4-length romp in the June 11 Mohe-
gan Sun Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I).
Another son of Tapit, 4-year-old Frosted
is targeting the Aug. 6 Whitney (gr. I).
"Frosted worked well and will work
one more time for the Whitney. He's
doing fabulous. As a racing fan, (the Met
Mile) was unbelievable. Not only to be
the trainer but as a racing fan you don't
see races like that very often," McLaugh-
lin said. "He might not duplicate that
number or that race again, but we don't
think he has to to win the next one or
two. If he does, great, but we don't think
he has to. We just hope he runs a similar
race. I doubt that he can do that again
ever in his life."
Godolphin's 3-year-old filly Kareena,
winner of the Jersey Girl Stakes June 10
at Belmont Park, worked four furlongs
in :47 2/5 Friday at Greentree. She will
make her graded stakes debut in the
Aug. 6 Test Stakes (gr. I).
"She's doing fabulous," McLaughlin
said. BH

COUGAR II A BETTER SPOT FOR HARD ACESBy Jeremy Balan
Following the scratch of fellow grade I winner
Hoppertunity, who was withdrawn after spiking a
fever, Hard Aces stands out in a field of five for the
$100,000 Cougar II Handicap (gr. III) July 24 at Del
Mar.
The Hronis Racing runner often cashes significant
paychecks against top competition. His grade I score
came in the 2015 Gold Cup at Santa Anita and he
hasn't won since, but he hit the board in three of his
last four starts for trainer John Sadler and has life-
time earnings of $939,645.
The 6-year-old son of Hard Spun was also entered
in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego Handicap (gr. II) a day
prior to the 1 1/2-mile Cougar II, but Sadler opted
for the longer race once he heard of Hoppertunity's
scratch. Trainer Bob Baffert said the 5-year-old son
of Any Given Saturday spiked the fever Thursday
afternoon but was fine Friday morning.
"Virus going around barn," Baffert said in a text
message.
"Hoppertunity got sick, so that would make him
a pretty strong favorite Sunday," Sadler said. "He

BOWIE WINS FIRST TIME OUT AT SARATOGABy Mary Reeder
Highlighted in yesterday's Races to Watch, 2-year-
old Bowie jumped out of the gate and never
looked back to win her July 22 debut for trainer Steve
Asmussen at Saratoga Race Course.
On opening day at the upstate oval in a maiden
special weight for juvenile fillies, the daughter of Mal-
ibu Moon with one blue eye sped through fractions
of :21.97, :45.16, and :58.18, finishing 5 1/2 furlongs
in 1:05.64 on a fast track.
LNJ Foxwoods’ Bowie, ridden by Florent Geroux,
opened up a 5 1/2-length lead around the far turn
but slowed in the stretch to win over Florida-bred
Special Risk by half a length. Torrent finished third.
Bred in Kentucky by T.F. VanMeter and Ricky Stiv-
ers, Bowie was consigned as a weanling to the 2014
Keeneland November sale by VanMeter Sales and
sold for $750,000 to Solis/Litt Bloodstock. She is out
of the Unbridled’s Song mare Life Lesson—a multiple
stakes-placed winner who has foaled one other win-
ner and this year produced a full brother to Bowie.
She also has a yearling colt by Union Rags.
Bowie previously posted quick works at Churchill
Downs and a bullet five furlongs from the gate in
1:00.01 at Saratoga July 13. BH
INAUGURAL PEGASUS WORLD CUP MAKES THE GRADEBy Blood-Horse Staff
The first edition of the Pegasus World Cup Invita-
tional Stakes at Gulfstream Park made the grade.
According to a July 22 announcement from the
American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thor-
oughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the
organization voted to assign grade I status to the
race—formerly the grade I Donn Handicap—for its
first edition slated for Jan. 28, 2017. The Stronach
Group is promoting the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World
Cup as the world's richest Thoroughbred race, with a
purse of $12 million generated from a $1 million buy-
in from 12 entrants.
"I think that really makes a big difference," said
Jack Wolf, founder of Starlight Racing and CEO of the
Pegasus World Cup. "Even though it's a $12 million
race I think it's important to have the grade I with it."
At its first meeting after the 2017 Pegasus World
Cup Invitational, most likely in April 2017, the com-
mittee will evaluate the 2017 running, nomination
process, and race conditions for any 2018 renewal.
"I'm sure they gave it a lot of thought and dis-
cussion; we're very excited they found it would be
worthy of the grade I status," Wolf said.
The race could feature 2014 Horse of the Year
and 2016 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) winner California
Chrome, who is slated for a run in the July 23 San
Diego Stakes (gr. II) at Del Mar with a late-season eye
on the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). BH

MIYADI SUSPENDED AFTER DRUG TESTBy Jeremy Balan
The California Horse Racing Board announced July
21 that trainer Steve Miyadi will be suspended
30 days after one of his horses tested for levels of
methamphetamine and amphetamine that exceeded
allowed limits following a race at Los Alamitos Race
Course in December.
The suspension comes as part of a settlement
between Miyadi and the CHRB.
The settlement includes the reduction of a 180-
day suspension to 30 days, a $5,000 fine, and a
one-year probation period. The suspension will begin
Aug. 7 and end Sept. 5.
Though Miyadi agreed to the settle-
ment, his lawyer, former trainer Darrell
Vienna, said the positive urine test on
Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Run for
Retts following her third-place finish in the
Soviet Problem Stakes Dec. 3 was "passive
contamination."
Vienna said when Miyadi first learned
of the positive test, he agreed to have him-
self and all of his employees also tested
for drugs. Two grooms tested positive for
methamphetamine and amphetamine
far exceeding the levels found in Run for
Retts, according to Vienna, who also took
issue with the threshold levels in horses
that trigger suspensions.
Run for Retts' test showed 5.9 nano-
grams per milliliter of amphetamine and
13.8 nanograms per milliliter of metham-
phetamine. One groom tested for 3,068
nanograms per milliliter of amphetamine
and 9,775 nanograms per milliliter of
methamphetamine, while the other had
respective numbers of 878 and 2,955.
"The levels (in Run for Retts) were ex-
traordinarily minute and it is a testament
to the detection process," Vienna said.
"The amounts are far below cutoffs of
thresholds for federal employees—human
beings. If this horse was capable and qual-
ified to fly an airplane, she would be able
to transport passengers in a jumbo jet."
Vienna said he believes Miyadi had a good case
to oppose the sanctions, but the trainer ultimate-
ly agreed to the settlement to avoid the risk of a
lengthier suspension. Vienna also took issue with the
process, which would have had to go through CHRB
stewards or hearing officers.
"The decision was made to go through tremen-
dously lengthy litigation or to reach a settlement. It's
a tough decision," Vienna said. "If we had an oppor-
tunity to (have) an adjudication under an impartial
judge—and I don't want to disparage the hearing of-
ficers or the stewards, but frankly their employment
is predicated on the whim of the CHRB." BH

STEINER TO PURSUE SPORTS PSYCHOLOGYBy Jeremy Balan
Jockey Joe Steiner will pursue a career in sports
psychology after retiring from a career in which he
rode in 10,846 races.
After 35 years, 52 tracks, and 32 broken bones,
Steiner announced his retirement July 21.
Though he has considered finding another occu-
pation for some time, the 51-year-old native of Rent-
on, Wash., said the impetus for his decision came July
18 when trainer Monique Snowden was found dead a
day after Steiner was aboard The Chilli Man when the
gelding broke down at Emerald Downs.
"It came to me like a bright light and now is the
time I need to make that change," Steiner said. "It
really makes you soul-search when someone does
something like that. The experience of someone los-
ing their life changed mine.
"I can't ride forever and that came upon me. In
light of the incident, that really has shaken loose.
Right now is the time to move on."
Steiner said he'd ideally like to help jockeys and
other athletes deal with the trials and tribulations of
life.
"With all those injuries, you get time to think.
What would I have a passion for?" Steiner said.
"What would feel the same as riding horses? I did
real estate, I did other things—I could never find it. I
couldn't find anything that compared to what I feel
with riding horses until this."
Since his first winner in 1981 aboard a horse
named Hillside Ruler at Del Mar, Steiner
rode 1,060 more to victory, including seven
in graded stakes and a grade I with Sarato-
ga Passage in the 1987 Norfolk Stakes (now
called the FrontRunner at Santa Anita Park).
Steiner was told he would never ride
again after sustaining a severe neck injury
in 2005, and retired a first time in 2006, but
returned to riding in 2011.
"I was very fortunate I was able to come
back and ride again after they told me I
couldn't," Steiner said. "The doctor told me
I could not ride again, but after six years, I
started working out, doing yoga. You only
live once and I wanted to do it. I had too
much passion for this."
In 2015 Steiner relocated from Southern
California to his home state to ride at Emer-
ald Downs, where his parents, Joe and Sally,
operate the Quarter Chute Café in the stable
area. In his first start at the Auburn, Wash.,
racetrack—about 12 miles south of Renton—
he rode the 1,000th winner of his career.
Steiner couldn't name a favorite horse,
or even a signature achievement from his
career. The thrills were too much to pare
down.
"There were so many great horses and
I cherished them all," Steiner said. "Riding
a horse—it was an out-of-body experience.
I wish I could communicate just how great
that was to people." BHEMER

HALF BROTHER TO RUNHAPPY DEBUTSBy Alastair Bull
A half brother to champion sprinter Runhappy
(Super Saver) will answer a few questions about
how much family ability he's inherited July 23 when
August Dawn Farm’s Any Questions debuts for
trainer Gary Sciacca in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special
weight at Saratoga Race Course.
Rated 8-1 on the morning line, Any Questions has
shown ability in the mornings. He produced bullet
works at Belmont Park: five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 June
30 and 1:01 July 7. He breezed three furlongs at Sara-
toga July 19 in :38 1/5.
Bred by Wayne, Gray, and Bryan Lyster in Ken-
tucky, Any Questions is by Lookin At Lucky out of the
winning Broken Vow mare Bella Jolie, whose first foal
Runhappy, won the NYRA.com King’s Bishop Stakes,
the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and the Malibu
Stakes (all gr. I); her second, Curlins Vow (Curlin), has
one second-place finish from three starts.
Runhappy’s exploits last year made Any Ques-
tions, a more marketable auction prospect. Twin
Creeks Racing bought him for $255,000 at the
2015 Keeneland September yearling sale from the
Ashview Farm consignment, and subsequently sold
him for $300,000 to Sciacca out of Eddie Woods’
consignment to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s
2016 April sale.
A few days after Runhappy’s Breeders' Cup tri-
umph, Ashview sold Bella Jolie, in foal to Cairo Prince,
at the 2016 Keeneland November mixed sale for $1.6
million to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings.
Favored at 3-1, One Liner (Into Mischief) is trained
by Todd Pletcher for China Horse Club and WinStar
Farm. The colt from the family of Albertus Maximus
and Daredevil was a $150,000 purchase at the 2015
Keeneland January sale. He worked four furlongs at
Saratoga in :48 4/5 July 7 and in :47 1/5 July 16.
Close behind him at 7-2 is Forge (Harlan’s
Holiday), a $375,000 Woodford Thoroughbreds pur-
chase at last year’s Keeneland September yearling
sale. BH

WALDROP HOPEFUL WAGERING CAN INCREASE
I caught up with NTRA president Alex Waldrop
this week to further discuss the improving han-
dle numbers of the first six months of 2016.
Last week I suggested the positive wagering
trends, specifically improving average-han-
dle-per-race numbers, indicate racing might be
building a foundation. Since 2011 wagering has
largely been flat, but this has come at a time
of reduced racing. Horseplayers are wagering
more on the available races, as per-race handle
improved 16% from 2011 to 2015 and per-race
average jumped another 5.3% in the first six
months of 2016 (compared with first six months
of 2015).
"The economic downturn and the resulting
decline in the foal crop challenged us to adapt
by reducing races and race days to maintain
field size. It appears from these early (2016)
numbers that we are doing so successfully
although field size remains a challenge in many
jurisdictions," Waldrop said. "While these posi-
tive trends indicate that races with full, compet-
itive fields will translate into more wagering, it
remains to be seen exactly what is the right mix
that will maximize pari-mutuel handle for tracks
while also driving the economics of the indus-
try for owners and breeders. In any event, the
bettors appear to be telling us they prefer the
product we are now offering."
Waldrop believes the industry has attempt-
ed more innovation following a 27% decline in
pari-mutuel wagering from 2006-2011.
"That downturn has forced racetracks and
online wagering outlets to seek new ways to
make their racing product and wagering menu
more attractive," Waldrop said. "That's encour-
aging, and we expect that as innovative tracks
experiment successfully with lowered takeout
and new exotic wagers, others will follow suit."
Waldrop said the sport also has benefitted
from racing stars.
"It's also a very positive sign that our champi-
ons like California Chrome, Beholder, Tepin, and
Songbird, as well as a talented crop of 3-year-
olds headed by Kentucky Derby Presented by
Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Nyquist, are pointing
for the Breeders' Cup in November," Waldrop
said. "Hopefully, we can sustain these healthy
numbers through the rest of the year."
Waldrop said the NTRA has been pleased to
see progress in Washington, D.C., on changing
how reporting and withholding rules are applied
to winning tickets. He said the NTRA will contin-
ue its work to make this a reality, a change that
would pump money back into wagering pools.
"Federal tax withholding and reporting policy
has for too long been a significant impediment
to the growth of pari-mutuel wagering," Wal-
drop said. "By ignoring the true cost of a wager,
especially the ever-popular exotic wager, the IRS
overtaxes winning horseplayers who then wager
less. Modernizing tax withholding and reporting
will put more money back in the hands of our
customers who will re-bet most of those dollars
for the benefit of all. It's a simple but important
fix that is long overdue." BH
