the female family of leading sire Unbridled's Song.

Bred by Blackstone Farm, the colt has sold twice pre-

viously, most recently acquired by agent A. C. Elliott

for $65,000 from the Equest Thoroughbreds offer-

ings at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

The other speedy colt, Hip 188 from the Pure Silk

consignment, is a son of Yesbyjimminy bred in Flori-

da by Gary Lee Mahon and Jacqueline Jane Diamond

and named Yes Darlin. Consigned by Summerfield

to the 2014 OBS October sale, he was purchased by

Las Palmas Farm for $2,000. His dam, Darlin Dixie,

is a multiple stakes-winning daughter of Dixie Brass

who is a half sister to multiple stakes winners Illusive

Ghost and Slewance.

Hip 184, an Adios Charlie filly named Adios Dawn,

was bred in Florida by Curtis Mikkelsen and Patricia

Horth. She is from the family that produced stakes

winners Diplomat’s Reward, Dispersed Reward, and

Mom’z Laugh.

Among six 2-year-olds that breezed three fur-

longs, the best time of :33 3/5 was turned in by Hip

125, a Malibu Moon colt bred in Kentucky by his con-

signor, Omega Farm. Produced from the stakes-win-

ning Grand Slam mare Cintaeosa, the colt had been

a $200,000 RNA at last year’s Keeneland fall yearling

sale and was bought by George Mellon for $28,000

from Woodford Thoroughbreds at this year’s OBS

March 2-year-olds in training sale.

The best of two half-mile workers, in :47 3/5, was

Hip 130, a Colonel John colt bred in West Virginia by

Schiano Racing Inc. and consigned by 30-30 Ranch.

Offered by Select Sales at the Keeneland September

yearling sale, the colt, named Bacoli, was bought by

Socorro Martinez/30-30 Ranch for $4,500.

The sale will be held June 14-19, with sessions

beginning daily at 10:30 a.m. (all times Eastern).

The under tack sessions continue at 7:30 a.m. daily

through June 11. BH

SHOCKING DIMENSION IN CONNAUGHT CUPBy Jeremy Balan

By far the longest shot on the board June 5 in the

$200,000 Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-IIT), River-

side Bloodstock's Dimension provided the stunner of

the day at Woodbine.

After a slow start in the seven-furlong

turf sprint, the 8-year-old Medicean geld-

ing was still able to stay within striking

distance early, rallied in the middle of

the track in the stretch, and outfinished

last-out graded stakes winner Passion for

Action to win by a half-length. Bye Bye

Bernie completed the trifecta, another

length back.

Dimension's last graded win came back

in the 2013 Play the King (Can-IIT). His last

victory was a score in the 2014 Kentucky

Downs Turf Dash, which he followed with

six straight off-the-board finishes.

"He loves it up here with the European

style turf course, but he hasn't had a lot of

luck in this race," Conor Murphy said. "Two

years ago, he stumbled out of the gate and never got

into it, and last year it rained heavily a couple of hours

before the race and he really needs quick ground."

The winner paid $42.70, $8.80, and $8.90 across

the board.

Dimension has a 6-6-1 record from 32 starts with

$467,539 in earnings. BH

MIDDLEBURG ADDS TO MONMOUTH PARK RECORDBy Jeremy Balan

Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone's

homebred Middleburg has

shown his best at Monmouth Park

and gave another example June 5 in

the $100,000 Red Bank Stakes (gr.

IIIT).

With a picture-perfect ride from

jockey Joe Bravo, the 6-year-old son

of Lemon Drop Kid rode the rail

tracking the pace almost all the way

around the grass course, angled out

at the top of the stretch to pass the

front-runners, and held off at late drive

from Vyjack to win by a neck. Rose Brier

held for third.

The Christophe Clement-trained Middleburg is a

nose away from being undefeated on the Monmouth

grass. He won the 2015 Cliff Hanger (gr. IIIT) and was

a nose back in last year's Monmouth Stakes (gr. IIT).

"This horse is just so good," Bravo said. "We got

the perfect trip in behind horses and he settled great.

Around the turn we moved to the outside and he just

ran those horses down. It's fun to ride ones like this."

A Virginia-bred out of the Spectrum mare Rum

Charger, Middleburg is a half brother to multiple

grade I winner Winchester. He has a 6-8-3 record

from 19 starts and earnings of $429,760. BH

FIRST WINNERS FOR HANSEN, CAL NATIONBy Myra Lewyn and Alastair Bull

Former champion juvenile male Hansen and the

grade II-placed Maryland stallion Cal Nation both

had their first winners as sires June 5.

Hansen, now based in South Korea, got on the

board when the aptly named Hansen's Victory went

gate to wire at Hastings Race Course.

Hansen's Victory, trained by Troy Taylor for a part-

nership that includes the North American Thorough-

bred Horse Co., won by 1 3/4 lengths and covered

the 3 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race in :39.97

on a fast track.

The bay gelding was bred in Kentucky by 3480

Equine from the multiple stakes-winning Storm Vic-

tory mare Victory With Class. He was a Can$65,000

($49,205) buy at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse

Society's British Columbia sale in September 2015.

A 7-year-old by Tapit—Stormy Sunday, by Sir Cat,

Hansen stands for the Korean Racing Association, to

whom he was sold for stud duty after standing his

initial season in 2013 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud

near Versailles, Ky. There are 102 2-year-olds in his

first crop.

Raced by breeder Kendall

Hansen and Skychai Racing,

Hansen retired with a 5-2-0

record from nine starts and

earnings of $1,810,805. He won

all three starts at 2—the 2011

Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I)

and Kentucky Cup Juvenile

after breaking his maiden by an

eye-catching 12 1/4 lengths at

Turfway Park. At 3, he won the

Gotham Stakes and Iowa Derby

(both gr. III) and finished second

in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III)

and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes

(gr. I).

Cal Nation's first winner,

Parade of Nations, took out a

maiden claiming race at Pimlico

Race Course. Battled early by

Jet Home, Parade of Nations

grabbed the lead at the top of

the stretch and finished strongly under Feargal Lynch

to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

The race provided an exacta for Cal Nation as

another of his sons, Earned It, took second, 7 3/4

lengths ahead of the rest of the six-horse field.

John E. Williamson's homebred gelding is the

first foal of Parade of Colors (Leading the Parade), a

winner of three. Parade of Nations' third dam is Twin

Bet (Bet Twice), a stakes winner of the Waya Handi-

cap at Hollywood Park, whose progeny include stakes

winner Rahy's Chance.

Cal Nation, by Distorted Humor, is a half brother

to four stakes winners, including Haskell Invitational

(gr. I) winner Bluegrass Cat. He won three of his nine

starts and was stakes-placed twice, including a third

in the Carry Back Stakes (gr. II).

Cal Nation stands at Country Life Farm in Bel Air,

Md., for $2,500.

Meanwhile, the first two runners by Kentucky Der-

by Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner I'll Have

Another finished out of the top three in juvenile races

in Japan. Double Split finished fourth at Hanshin, and

Meiner Sieger finished sixth at Tokyo. BH

'ESSENCE' OF THE THOROUGHBRED ON EXHIBITBy Eric Mitchell

An exhibit featuring more than 25 large-scale black-

and-white photographs of some of America's

premier racehorses and stallions will open June 9 at

the Steven Kasher Gallery in Manhattan.

Neil Latham, a fine arts and commercial photogra-

pher, spent 2013 crisscrossing the country to pursue

a vision—to capture the essence of the Thoroughbred

on film using medium- and large-format cameras.

Latham said he used film because the images are

more truthful and provide a "softness and subtlety

that enhanced the emotional connection."

"I'm intrigued by the juxtaposition of strength and

power with beauty and fragility, the illustration of de-

termination and character through taut muscles and

coursing veins after a fast-paced run, the wild spirit of

a charging herd," Latham said. "I've never felt as deep-

ly about anything as I have about this work."

His subjects include A.P. Indy, Curlin, Ghostzapper,

Tapit, and the two newest inductees into the National

Racing Hall of Fame, Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta.

Called "Neil Latham: American Thoroughbred," the

exhibit runs through July 29. An opening reception will

be held June 9, 6-8 p.m., at 515 W. 26th St., New York

City. BH

EFFINEX AMONG STEPHEN FOSTER POSSIBLESBy Blood-Horse Staff

Tri-Bone Stables' New York-bred Effinex, winner

of the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II) in his last start

April 16, is among the nominees for the $500,000

Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) June 18 at Church-

ill Downs.

Trained by James Jerkens, Effinex, a 5-year-old

Mineshaft horse, won the grade I Clark Handicap

at Churchill last November after his second-place

finish behind Horse of the Year and Triple Crown

winner American Pharoah in the Breeders' Cup

Classic (gr. I).

Churchill officials said Effinex is expected for

the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster, which will be run

at night as part of a "Downs After Dark" program.

The race is a "Win and You're In" event for the

Breeders' Cup Classic.

A few others pointing to the Stephen Foster are

four-time graded stakes winner Majestic Harbor

and grade III winner Eagle, who finished first and

second, respectively, in the Alysheba Stakes (gr. II)

at Churchill May 7. Last year's winner, Noble Bird,

is nominated but most likely will run in the June

11 Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) at Belmont Park,

track officials said. BH

ROUGET TRIUMPHS WITH ALMANZORBy Myra Lewyn

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget sent out favorite Me-

khtaal in the Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I, French Derby)

June 5 but his lightly regarded Almanzor pulled off the

victory at 20-1 odds.

Jean-Bernard Eyquem drove Almanzor across finish

line, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of late-running Zarak. Prix

Hocquart (Fr-II) victor Mekhtaal, favored at 9-2, was a

non-threatening eighth of 16 runners in the French

classic at Chantilly.

Talismanic led early before Robin of Navan took up

the running after the first quarter-mile. Eyquem waited

in midfield with Almanzor, who quickened to lead in the

final furlong to seal the win.

The time for about 2,100 meters (about 1 5/16 miles)

was 2:11.62 on soft turf.

French Guineas fifth-place finisher Zarak, a son of

Dubawi out of the Aga Khan's undefeated star mare

Zarkava, put in a good run after racing at the back of

field early and outfinished supplementary entrant

Dicton by 1 3/4 lengths for second. The Aga Khan was

seeking a second Derby triumph in as many days

following Harzand's victory Saturday in the Investec

Epsom Derby (Eng-I).

Rouget landed his second triumph in the French

Derby following Le Havre in 2009 and his second of the

season after Le Havre's daughter La Cressonniere took

the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I, French One Thou-

sand Guineas).

"I've always liked him and he was well drawn, but

you couldn't say before he was among the favorites," he

said about Almanzor, whom he secured for €100,000

($134,000) at the 2014 Arqana Deauville yearling sale.

The colt won a minor stakes at 2 and captured the Prix

de Guiche (Fr-III) by two lengths May 10 at Chantilly. "To

win races like (the French Derby) is why we all get up

every morning."

Almanzor is owned by Ecurie Antonio Caro and

Gerard Augustin-Normand, also owners of La Cresson-

niere. He has five wins and a third from seven starts. In

his outing prior to the Prix de Guiche, he finished third

to Dicton in the Prix de Fontainebleau (Fr-III) in April at

Chantilly.

Bred in France by Haras d'Etreham, Almanzor is

from the first crop of French group I-winning juvenile

Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) and is his sire's first black-type

winner. He is out of the unraced Maria's Mon mare

Darkova, whose family was developed by the Aga Khan

and his daughter Zahra.

Three group II races were also on the Chantilly card

Sunday, with perhaps the most notable winner being

Volta (Siyouni), who took out the Prix de Sandringham

over 1,600 meters (about a mile). The race may have

earned her a start in the Prix de Diane (Fr-I, French

Oaks), though she would need to be supplemented.

The other group II winners were One Foot In Heaven

(Fastnet Rock) in the Grand Prix de Chantilly, and Son

Cesio (Zafeen) in the Prix du Gros-Chene. BH

WINNING RETURN FOR REQUITEBy Blood-Horse Staff

The 4-year-old Warrior's Reward colt Requite,

away since last August at Saratoga Race Course,

returned a winner June 5 in the $75,000 Parrot Key

Stakes at Gulfstream Park and could make his next

start in the $250,000 Smile Sprint (gr. II).

The Smile Sprint at six furlongs will be held July

2 as part of the Florida track's Summit of Speed

program. The stakes is a Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I)

"Win and You're In" race.

Requite, owned by Limestone Thoroughbreds

and trained by George Weaver, finished second in

the Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) in upstate New York

in his final race of 2015. In the summer of 2014 he

broke his maiden in his career debut, also at Sara-

toga.

Requite, bred in Kentucky by Limestone Thor-

oughbreds and Dr. Wilfred Robinson, won the

six-furlong Parrot Key under Eddie Castro by 3

1/2 lengths in 1:09.18 on a track rated fast. He is

headed to Saratoga but probably will return for the

Summit of Speed.

"We're going to ship (to Saratoga June 6) but

we're going to keep an eye on the Summit of Speed

race down here," Weaver said. "We'll train him up

there and bring him back down." BH

LOGOTYPE UPSETS MAURICE IN YASUDA KINENBy Alastair Bull

Japan's Horse of the Year Maurice (Screen Hero)

suffered his first defeat in more than a year

when he was beaten by longshot Logotype (Lo-

hengrin) in the Yasuda Kinen (Jpn-I) June 5.

Maurice was heavily favored after winning the

Champions Mile (HK-I) at his previous start, but

Logotype got away with slow fractions in front and

scored at odds of 36-1.

Logotype was good enough to win the 2013

Satsuki Sho (Jpn-I, Japanese Two Thousand Guin-

eas), but hadn't won in 16 starts since, though he

was runner-up in the Lord Derby Challenge Tro-

phy (Jpn-III) at his previous start.

"We had to wait for a long time to justify Log-

otype's true form as a grade I winner and I am

grateful that he had stayed healthy to this day to

make it happen," trainer Tsuyoshi Tanaka said.

Maurice's connections said earlier in the week

that he could have done with another week of

preparation, and jockey Tommy Berry said he

could have benefited from a couple of extra gal-

lops.

"He still would have ended up in the same posi-

tion in the race with that lack of tempo, but he might

have just relaxed a little bit better," Berry said. BH

INDIANA DERBY TARGETED FOR THE PLAYERBy Blood-Horse Staff

The Player, a 3-year-old Street Hero colt, is headed

to bigger things after a victory June 3 in an allow-

ance race at Churchill Downs.

Owned and bred by trainer William "Buff" Bradley

in partnership with Carl Hurst, The Player is out of

the Gilded Time mare Hour Queen, who was bred by

Hurst, Bradley, and Bradley's late father, Fred. Hour

Queen is out of the Williamstown mare Town Queen,

yet another homebred who gave Buff Bradley his first

stakes win in the 2002 My Charmer Stakes at Turfway

Park.

The Player is being pointed to the Indiana Derby

(gr. II) July 16 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.

"Most of my big horses are in this pedigree," Brad-

ley told Churchill Downs media officials. "I bought

Town Queen's mother (Regal Export) for $20,000 and

she produced King of Speed, Town Queen, and Chief

Export, who were all black-type horses. If (The Player)

moves on, this will be the biggest horse that we have

had out of this pedigree.

"We always thought that

this would be our big pedi-

gree and then we had Brass

Hat out of a different one

and then Groupie Doll out

of another different one, so

we're kind of glad to see this

horse come along and that's

why we kept the mare. This

family matures late—you

don't see them really start

coming around until they're

about 4 years old. I think he

has got great conformation,

he's sound, and he could

really improve."

The Player finished

fourth in his debut last fall

at Churchill in a race that

included Tom's Ready, For-

evamo, and Cherry Wine.

He then finished second

behind Conquest Harle-

quin in a maiden special

weight event at Keeneland in April, and then broke

his maiden by 5 1/2 lengths in a one-turn-mile event

at Churchill.

In the June 3 race, also at one mile, The Player

was in front before the half-mile mark under Shaun

Bridgmohan and won by 1 1/2 lengths over the highly

regarded Unbridled Outlaw, who was ridden by Co-

rey Lanerie.

"What made me feel good was after the race, (Lan-

erie) came up to me before The Player even walked

in the winner's circle and said, 'Buff I ran right up to

him and your horse just hit the next gear. I thought

I was going to go by him and your horse went on.'

So he's a very nice horse and I've got other jockeys

complimenting me before I even got to the winner's

circle, which was good.

"I said that if this horse can win this race then we'll

go to the Indiana Derby. I felt like he's that type of

horse. He's a nice, big, good-looking horse and he

has got the right demeanor. He knows how to relax

and he knows how to take everything in. He's had

personality from day one."

The $500,000 Indiana Derby is run at 1 1/16 miles. BH

SMALL CROPS, BIG RUNNERSBy Eric Mitchell

A feature article in the June 4 issue of

Blood-Horse highlights the leading active

North American sires by percentage of black-

type stakes winners.

Included in the list are stallions represent-

ed by a minimum of 100 named foals of rac-

ing age. MarketWatch decided to stretch the

boundary a bit to see whether we might iden-

tify any regional sires that are finding success

despite their smaller crops. In addition to the

100-foal minimum, we added all sires with at

least two crops of racing age that also had a

minimum of 15 named foals per crop.

The expanded criteria picked up three

noteworthy stallions: Valor Farm's My Gold-

en Song, Flying Horse Farm's Sungold, and

Rockridge Stud's Giant Surprise. Their per-

centages of black-type stakes winners are

high enough to put them among the top 25

stallions ranked by this statistic.
