From the Dean

I had the opportunity in June to participate in my second OHSU School of Dentistry commencement … this one from the other side of the stage. The euphoria, relief, nervous

anticipation, and gratitude of finishing dental school after four years are something you never forget no matter where you are in your career!

As I was listening to the messages of congratulations, advice for the future, and achievements of our 90 doctor of dental medicine and advanced specialty graduates, I was struck by several positive trends.

First, I was impressed by the number of new doctor of dental medicine graduates who are pursuing advanced specialty training. Nineteen graduates from the Class of 2012, or 26 percent, have enrolled in one- to six-year advanced specialty training programs at institutions such as Montefiore Medical Center, Bethesda Naval Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Virginia Commonwealth University. That so many new graduates are going immediately into postdoctoral training confirms not only the value of advanced education, but suggests that today’s students recognize the importance of being lifelong learners.

I noticed that the majority of our new graduates pursuing advanced specialty training are going out of state, many to the east coast. To me, this confirms that OHSU School of Dentistry is not only a top provider of Northwest dentists, but also a nationally-recognized resource for dental education. The fact that we are attracting a generation of students who are mobile and using their health care expertise to move nationally in terms of oral health careers speaks volumes about the reputation of our clinical excellence.

A second positive trend that I observed with our newest graduates is the number pursuing careers in public health dentistry. When I graduated from OHSU School of Dentistry in 1978, there were very few of us who went into public health dentistry. In 2012, we have seven doctor of dental medicine alumni (nine percent) who will pursue public health dentistry. Several will work at clinics in New Mexico, with the others heading to Texas, Montana, Alaska, and Oregon. I believe the increased

emphasis on caring for those in need, as well as the school’s required community rotation curriculum, account for this boost in public health dental careers. Given the access to care and equitable access issues facing Oregon and the nation, this is a particularly noteworthy trend.

Congratulations to our new graduates (see page six). Their future plans underscore the impressiveness of their class. I am extremely proud to have them among my colleagues.

From the Alumni Association President

As many of you know, the OHSU School of Dentistry is near and dear to my heart and I am a strong advocate for its future. Where would we all be without our education? I know where I’d be! I firmly believe we all have a responsibility to serve the school that helped make us who we are today as oral health professionals.

In this, my first column as Alumni Association president, not to borrow too heavily from the U.S. Army, but I am going to ask each of you to become an “Army of One.”

The strength of any army lies in the strength of each individual’s commitment. We need everyone’s conviction and commitment to help us continue moving forward with construction of our new dental school facility on South Waterfront (see story, page one).

The fulfillment of a dream of a new school is very exciting for me. I feel we have a unique opportunity to make a difference for dental education in Oregon and this opportunity is only going to come around once in our lifetimes.

In May, Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64, who has unquestionably influenced my career, once again made a huge mark on me, although he didn’t realize it at the time. Dr. Clinton asked me to speak on Medical Emergencies to the International College of Dentists, and after I spoke, he handed me a coin. The coin, produced for the International College of Dentists, simply said, “Be a Better Leader. Make a Bigger Difference.”

Be a Better Leader. Make a Bigger Difference. I now carry that coin in my pocket with me every day. It inspired me to make my new building gift and to go to my study club and challenge them to make matching gifts to the new building.

So that is my challenge for all of you, the alumni of the OHSU School of Dentistry. We need each of you to be an “Army of One” by becoming ambassadors and leaders for our new building campaign. If you are thinking about joining my army, to borrow another phrase … JUST DO IT. Make a difference in the future of dental education in Oregon.

OHSU School of Dentistry Recruiting Six New Clinical Faculty Members

The OHSU School of Dentistry is recruiting six new clinical faculty for its pre-doctoral clinic. These faculty will work side-by-side with the current Integrated Group Practice leaders to ensure efficient patient care and outstanding education. “These are full-time positions with the effort being divided between teaching on the clinic floor in the pre-doctoral clinic and treating patients in the Faculty Dental Practice,” said Interim Dean Gary Chiodo, D.M.D. ’78, F.A.C.D. “This is not just a job; it is an adventure.” For more information, or to apply for one of the six clinical faculty positions, please contact Elizabeth Gustafson, Human Resources Coordinator, OHSU School of Dentistry, 611 S.W. Campus Drive, Portland, OR 97239, [email protected].

From the Provost

You have the power to make adifference in the future of health care. With a generous legacy gift to benefit the School of Dentistry, you can play an essential role in helping to fund education for the next generation of dentists. A gift to OHSU through your will, trust or retirement plan is an investment in knowledge, care and the vitality of our region.

The OHSU Foundation Gift Planning Team is ready to provide the information you need to help meet your financial goals – and leave a legacy of hope and health for the future.

Today’s decisions can help create tomorrow’s dentists

This is an incredibly dynamic time for OHSU’s School of Dentistry as plans to take the school to the next level are quickly becoming a reality.

OHSU and the School of Dentistry remain fully focused on providing

our students with an outstanding clinical education. The dental school is known for graduating our region’s best dentists, and we are devoted to sustaining this momentum. We will be increasing the number of full time faculty who are dentists while continuing to engage part time clinical faculty from the community.

Our new facility on Portland’s South Waterfront, the Skourtes Tower, will greatly enhance our students’ clinical experience. Operatories will be almost twice as large as those in the current building (see page 20) which will enable us to serve more patients with broader services. In addition, we remain committed to advancing oral health care throughout Oregon, particularly in our rural communities.

I am especially excited about our unprecedented opportunity to advance interprofessional education in a new facility. The OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) is a joint venture of the state, OHSU, Portland State University and Oregon State University and, as the name implies, a building that will foster interaction between students from all of our professional health care programs and our academic and research partners.

The new School of Dentistry is sited within the CLSB, providing an amazing opportunity for dental students to learn in a state-of-the-art school that is aligned with what will become one of the most progressive settings for collaborative education anywhere in the world. OHSU is on the vanguard of transforming the future of health care and, ultimately, the patient experience and health outcomes for all.

We are supported by an incredibly strong and loyal dental community. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to advance a proud legacy of excellence.

Jeanette Mladenovic, M.D., M.B.A., M.A.C.P., joined Oregon Health & Science University in October 2011 as provost and vice president for academic affairs. She provides the overarching vision for all of the missions of OHSU, including the School of Dentistry. She received her bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Washington, completed training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Stanford University, and obtained her master’s in business administration at the University of Miami. Prior to her arrival at OHSU, she served as the senior associate dean at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She has also served in administrative roles in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, the University of Colorado, and the University of Minnesota.

I am truly honored to be considered an ODS Scholar and appreciate the opportunity provided by ODS.” (Photo Dan Carter)

Each graduate from the Class of 2012 left dental school wiser … and owing an average of $180,000 in school loans. Dental student scholarships are key to reducing the debt most new graduates face, said Development Director Patrick J. Regan, Honorary Alumnus ’12. “We are grateful for the dental student scholarships from foundations, corporations, and organizations like the OHSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association, and individuals (alumni and non-alumni) who are helping to offset the cost of tuition for our students,” he said.

Van Zile Scholars receive tuition and mandatory fees to fund enrollment in years two and three of the six-year OMFS curriculum, the years residents become full-time medical students. Two years of medical school for OMFS residents (depending on students’ resident status) can cost from $35,000 to $50,000 per year. “We are so fortunate at OHSU to receive the best oral and maxillofacial surgical training in the country, and the Van Zile scholarship allows us the opportunity to use this training in full, to take our focus off of debts, and to put it back on teaching and patient care,” said Dr. Gelesko, who is holding a photo of Dr. Van Zile. “The scholarship gives us the responsibility of living up to Dr. Van Zile’s standards of training the future generations of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, of caring for patients who maybe otherwise wouldn’t receive any care, and of treating the more challenging cases that don’t pay, but often make the most difference in people’s lives.” (Photo Sydney Clevenger)

Alumni Adventures Introducing Jim Smith, D.M.D. ’81Alumni Association Vice President

Hometown: Portland

Undergraduate: Whitman College, B.S. in biochemistry

Why did you go into dentistry? My high school history teacher transitioned to a position working at the OHSU School of Dentistry and encouraged me to consider dentistry as a career. Before my senior high school year, I had an

opportunity to attend a week-long program at the dental school. That program helped me to better understand dentistry and begin to seriously pursue it as a career.

Post-Graduation: After graduation, I practiced dentistry in the United States Navy Dental Corps for 24 years. I was overseas, on two ships, as well as within the United States. While serving in the Navy, I earned a master of science degree in systems management from the University of Southern California, and a certificate in comprehensive dentistry from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Md. For three years, I served as director of advanced clinical programs in San Diego and three additional years on the training staff for comprehensive dentistry at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. I retired from the military in 2005.

Current Practice: Permanente Dental Associates at the Kaiser Glisan Dental Office

Hopes for the OHSU School of Dentistry: I am very excited for the future of the OHSU School of Dentistry as we stand at the doorway of an exciting new chapter in our history with construction of a completely new building. My hope is that the school’s reputation for providing a first-class dental education expands while the school maintains unparalleled continuing education opportunities for dental professionals throughout the state.

Family: Wife, Angie, and children, Trudi (19) and Garrett (17).

Hobbies: Running, bicycling, volunteering for dental outreach.

Gordon Marshall, D.M.D. ’79, associate professor of endodontology, received the Part-Time Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists. The award recognizes an “endodontist whose contributions to endodontics in the field of education have demonstrated dedication to endodontics in a predoctoral program, or in an advanced specialty education program in endodontics, and whose valuable contributions have instilled in his/her students the desire to pursue excellence in their career.” Dr. Marshall will receive his award at the annual session of the American Association of Endodontists next April in Hawaii.

There were 18 dental class reunions held this year by press time. The 2013 reunions will focus on classes ending in “3” and “8.” For more information on an upcoming class reunion, or to volunteer to coordinate your class’s reunion, please contact Lauren Shatz at (503) 552-0708.

DMD 1952On April 13, 10 of the 22 remaining members of the class of 1952, along with wives and friends, enjoyed an evening together at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland. A display table held photographs of the class at the time of admission to the school and at graduation, in various classes, at the “senior sneak,” of the school’s basketball team and a series of humorous caricature drawings. Before dinner, the oldest member of the class (in his 90’s), Dr. Charles Leveque, played a touching rendition of “Sentimental Journey” on his horn. The after-dinner program consisted of storytelling by the classmates. These stories were unusual, amusing and amazing. One told of treating movie actress Loretta Young. Another treated Humphrey Bogart. Most of the class members are World War II veterans who related some fascinating experiences, including one who delivered more than 100 babies while in the South Pacific. It was a joyful affair for everyone and some are looking forward to another reunion in five years. Really?– Lou Terkla, D.M.D. ’52

DMD 1957The Class of 1957 began their 55th class reunion at the Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon during the Oregon Dental Conference. Later that evening, a gala dinner was held at the Mirabella, a high-rise retirement complex located close to the site of the new OHSU School of Dentistry on the Willamette River. – Ken Berg, D.M.D. ’57

DMD 1962 A great time was had by all at the Class of 1962’s 50th reunion. There were 38 graduates and wives in attendance. The food was fine, the booze was better, but the best of all was the war connections. Hard to believe that 50 years has elapsed since we left school to conquer the world. Floyd Holady, (now 87 years old and the oldest member of our freshman class) looked unbelievable. He looked like the day we started dental school – OLD!!! Just kidding. We owe the dental school a very big thank you for more than adequately preparing for the challenge ahead but most of all for providing us with a comfortable life. – Jim Tsugawa, D.M.D. ’62

DMD 1967The turnout for the 45th reunion of the Class of 1967 was modest in numbers, but strong in spirit. We were represented by 11 classmates and their guests. Also, Mary K Eilers attended as a very special guest. We all enjoyed a wonderful evening of socializing and reminiscing. Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton stopped by and talked about plans for the new school. We all agreed to make every effort to be at the 50th reunion in 2017 and to encourage all our classmates to be there as well. – Jerry Rensch, D.M.D. ’67

2012 Class Reunions

RDH 1967The RDH Class of 1967 reunion was very fun with 10 classmates in attendance. We had a lot of laughs and shared a lot of memories of good and not so good times. There was a moment of silence for those of our class that had departed at far too young an age. There are medical challenges as one ages and these are being weathered well. The amazing part of it all is most of us are still working. True love of the folks we work on. – Sandra Olson, R.D.H. ’67

DMD 1972The Class of 1972 had a reunion at the Chart House with cocktails and dinner. There was a good turnout and two of our classmates had never been to any of our reunions so it was nice to see and talk to them again. We played golf at the Reserve Vineyards Golf Course the day before. All in all we had a great time and relived many fine memories of our time in school. Quite a few of our classmates are retired and living in other states. – Michael Mellum, D.M.D. ’72

RDH 1972The class of 1972 enjoyed drinks and a delicious buffet on the patio of the Chameleon Restaurant in Portland. Wendall Guthrie was the brave husband who dared attend the party and he held his own quite well. Many of us knew of him, but had never met him. He and Judy married in our second year and moved to Montana. We caught up on what we are all doing; some are still practicing full time! A few of us are retired or have different careers. We all look forward to each reunion to relive the old days and we still talk about the future! Congratulations on 40 years of friendship and great times.– Sandra McCoy, R.D.H. ’72, D.M.D. ’81

2012 Class Reunions

RDH 1977The Dental Hygiene Class of 1977 celebrated their 35th reunion on Saturday, June 23, with a dinner party at the Riverview Restaurant in Troutdale, Ore. Fifteen of 27 classmates attended, sharing fun memories and catching up on what’s going on in their current lives. An entertaining after-dinner slideshow of past and present memories contributed by each classmate brought plenty of smiles and laughter. Another highlight of the evening was custom-made toothbrush cookies and prophy angle keychains that were given as favors. Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton and his wife, Mary, made an appearance, bringing greetings and well wishes from the School of Dentistry. – Ann Caingcoy, R.D.H. ’77

DMD 1982The DMD Class of 1982 held their 30th reunion celebration at the Multnomah Athletic Club on Friday, April 13, in conjunction with the Oregon Dental Conference weekend. There were 41 classmates in attendance and 23 spouse/guests. Classmates traveled from as far away as New Zealand and Alaska. A delicious buffet dinner was enjoyed by all and, thanks to Dr. George Brant, a PowerPoint slide show set to music was shown featuring pictures provided by alums from the past and present. As a surprise gift to commemorate the occasion, Dr. Brant provided baseball caps to each alum present that were imprinted with the class motto we engraved on our hearts in tribute to Dr. Campagna: Dedication, Motivation and Pride! These hats compliment the “DMP” T-shirts George gifted us at the 25th reunion. We decided we had all “aged” well and look forward to our 35th reunion! – Jonna Hongo, D.M.D. ’82

DMD 1977The OHSU Dental Class of 1977 held their 35th class reunion on April 12, at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub in southeast Portland. It was a great casual event with a good turnout. Attendees were able to reminisce about old times, reconnect, and update each other on their practice or retirement status, as well as remember classmates who are no longer with us. A good time was had by all. For classmates who were not able to attend, we hope to have excellent attendance for our big 40th reunion coming up in a short five years!– Daniel Yaillen, D.M.D. ’77

’87

DMD 1987The Class of 1987 enjoyed a great weekend at Salishan on the Oregon Coast! Activities included Friday evening getting reacquainted at the watering hole. Saturday morning, after a breakfast buffet, classmates presented timely continuing education mini-courses. Saturday afternoon was spent playing golf, walking on the beach, and shopping in Lincoln City. Saturday evening, after a gourmet meal, we enjoyed the evening entertainment!

Many thanks to John Shader, Bill Jordan, Cindy Layport and Jeff Reddicks for presenting fascinating continuing education topics that broadened our dental knowledge. Also, thanks to Jack Clinton, and his wife Mary, for joining us for dinner and giving an update on the new dental school. Scott Hansen shared his political aspirations, hopefully the next Senator in Oregon! Jeff Reddicks shared a presentation of one of his volunteer passions, the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. Cindy Layport shared a slide show of old photos from dental school, loved those ‘80’s hairstyles! And, finally, a special and sincere thank you to the Mystical and Magical Sage and Part-Time Entertainer, Odontis the Magnificent! (aka Jeff Spathas)

For all of those who attended, the closeness and camaraderie that began during our memorable days at OHSU were rekindled. You are all awesome, what a wonderful weekend! We are already looking ahead to our 30th reunion in 2017, likely to be held at the Allison Inn and Spa in Oregon Wine Country. See you there!– Jeff Reddicks, D.M.D. ’87

2012 Class Reunions

DMD 1992On Saturday night, April 14, the Class of 1992 gathered at Paragon in the Pearl, for a fun night of drink, food, and more laughter than you can imagine. It was hard to believe that 20 years had passed since graduation. All in attendance had a great time discussing incidences like it was yesterday. A slide show with some “classic” pictures of classmates, and a one-by-one discussion of each person was the highlight. Everyone in the room spoke about what had gone on with their life since graduation, then for those not there, we told the story for them! For that reason, it is a good reminder to come to the next reunion! Brett Johnson seemed to come up with his usual funny commentary on each classmate, and at one point in the evening, Greg Ginsburg said he was laughing so much his ears hurt! After the official event, nearly the entire group stayed together chatting until we closed the establishment next door down. One thing for sure, nothing has changed with how close our dental class remains. We all continuously said how lucky we were to have gone through dental school with this great group of friends.– Jill Price, D.M.D. ’92

RDH 1992RDH class of 1992 met for dinner at The Melting Pot. In attendance were Jill Jones and her husband, Brian, Dorcas Gawlista, and Gwen Honeycutt and her husband, Amede. We had a fun time catching up and it was nice hearing about other class members that have been in contact over the years. All three are still active in dental hygiene. A nice evening was had by all.– Gwen Honeycutt, R.D.H. ’92

DMD 2002I really couldn’t believe when I started telling patients that I was going to be attending my TEN year dental reunion. On the one hand, I think patients liked the idea of my having been in practice that long, because that must mean I finally know what I am doing, right? On the other hand, it made me feel old! Well, getting together with a group of my dental school friends made me feel young again – like we were just sitting in oral pathology with Kris Blodgett asking questions. It was a great evening of chatting and catching up. Everything from funny kid stories to dental materials to the economy came up in conversation. We are sure hoping for more people to get together again soon. We promised not to wait another 10 years!– Megan Muth-Larson, D.M.D. ’02

both alumni and non alumni,” said Pat. “Many of our gifts are coming from people who have been longtime donors, but have decided now is the time to step up a giving level or two. Slow and steady wins the race.” The oral and maxillofacial surgery community, in particular, has recently made a number of gifts at the naming level (see also, page 19). (To make a gift, please contact Patrick J. Regan at (503) 494-0980, or [email protected]).

The dental community has been rallying around the new building in additional ways, holding and attending salons, helping to market the building by posing for photographs (go to bit.ly/ohsu-odc-photos), and taking interest in the construction site.

Lewis, D.M.D. ’61, and Judy, R.D.H. ’62, Blue held a salon at their home on May 9 for Eugene-area alums to hear about the new building. The Skourtes held a salon at their Hillsboro-area home on May 15. And Steve, D.M.D. ’80, and Dennel, R.D.H. ’77, Beadnell, hosted a salon in their Tigard-area home May 22.

A-dec, Inc., which is donating all new clinical equipment for the new building (in spaces twice the size of current operatories) has installed a model operatory in the School’s pre-doctoral clinic in bay seven (south side of building) where the endodontology group is located (see page 20).

Teri Barichello, D.M.D. ’98, ODS Health vice president and chief dental officer, has taken two tours of the construction site, gamely climbing several wet ladders to gain an understanding of the lay-out … and get a view from the top.

“It’s really remarkable,” said Dr. Barichello. “The whole experience in the new building is going to be superior. I wish all alums could come down and go for a tour.”

NEW BUIlDING DONORS

Name: Bruce, D.M.D. ’74, and Bunny Fiske

Hometown: Portland, Ore.

Gift: The assistant professor of orthodontics and his wife have been regular Dean’s Gold Circle donors to the OHSU School of Dentistry. Their $100,000 naming gift is the largest to date from the orthodontic community. “We have had a good life and are very appreciative of the education that I received that allowed that to happen,” said Dr. Fiske. “OHSU has been good to us and this gift was a small way of our saying thank you to the school and to all the mentors who worked hard to shape their students into the successful professionals that we eventually became. In short, it was payback time.”

NEW BUIlDING DONORS

Name: Lewis, D.M.D. ’61, and Judy, R.D.H. ’62, Blue

Hometown: Eugene, Ore.

Gift: The Blues are longtime supporters of a new dental school building, having pledged $100,000 for a new building during OHSU’s Oregon Opportunity Campaign. Upon seeing the news in 2011 that the new dental school building was going forward, they stepped up with a new gift of $50,000.

“We both received a quality education from the dental school and are supportive of the new school,” said Dr. Blue. “We feel that a modern dental school is vital to prepare graduates to meet the future demands of the profession. We hope other alums are encouraged to support the effort.”

New Building Fun Fact: Several of the smaller roofs on the OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) will be green spaces.

NEW BUIlDING DONORS

Name: Greg, D.M.D. ’94, and Lisa, R.D.H. ’93, Jones

Hometown: Hermiston, Ore.

Gift: Dr. Jones, the current Oregon Dental Association president, and his wife, Lisa, R.D.H. ’93, pledged $25,000 to the new dental school building in June 2011, 10 times larger than previous gifts.

Many of the recent gifts and newly named items in the OHSU School of Dentistry’s Skourtes Tower, now under construction, have been named by Portland-area oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

“A few months ago, there were three unnamed surgical sedation suites next to the new oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic on the 11th floor of the Skourtes Tower,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64. “Now, with the extraordinary support of the oral and maxillofacial (OMFS) community, those suites have all been claimed.

“The OMFS community has really stepped up to the plate and engaged in our new building campaign with amazing collegiality,” said Dr. Clinton. “In fact, one of the larger OMFS commitments is from an oral surgeon who is not even a graduate of OHSU!”

A spring pledge of $110,000 from Steve, D.M.D. ’80, and Dennel, R.D.H. ’77, Beadnell, combined with an earlier building gift of $30,000, and a $10,000 pledge from

OMFS Community Rallies Around New Building Campaign

Dr. Beadnell’s business partner Brett Ueeck, D.M.D. ’99, M.D. ’03, OMFS ’05, named the first surgical sedation suite for their practice, Sunset Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Sunset gift was followed by a pledge in May of $250,000 by Eugene Kelley, D.M.D. ’59, assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and his wife, Carol, who are naming one oral surgery sedation suite and one seminar room.

“We want to have all the surgical sedation suites named by oral and maxillofacial surgeons,” said Dr. Kelley. “I thought the gift was a good thing to do.”

After attending a May salon and hearing about the new building and Dr. Kelley’s gift, one of Dr. Kelley’s partners in his private practice, Christ Bouneff, D.M.D. ’64, and his wife, Barbara, made a pledge to name the third surgical sedation suite.

At that same salon, former faculty member Normund K. Auzins, D.D.S., and his wife, Bonnie Stewart, Ph.D., pledged $100,000 toward the new building, one of the largest gifts to date from a non-alumni couple. The gift of Drs. Auzins and Stewart will name a seminar room in the Skourtes Tower.

Campaign Update

A model of the 120-square-foot operatories slated for OHSU School of Dentistry’s new facility in Skourtes Tower has been delivered to the first floor of the current school and is being installed in the endodontology bay of the pre-doctoral clinic.

“I’ve had several people tell me that the equipment that will be in our new operatories looks just like what is in their dental office now,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64. “We hope that our graduates will someday be telling their suppliers to set up their operatories just like the ones in dental school. That’s how nice these are.”

The 120-square-foot operatories are more than twice the size of the current operatories in the six group practices. They have built-in instrumentation, a fixed dental light, a sink, cabinets for storage, and 5.5-foot walls for privacy (which were not attached when the photo was taken).

The model operatory was designed and donated to the School by A-dec, Inc.

The number of OHSU School of Dentistry faculty and staff participating in the new building campaign to date is impressive, reports School Development Director Patrick Regan, Honorary Alumnus ’12.

Nearly 72 percent of deans, department chairs, and department directors have given a gift within the last year, said Pat. Of full-time faculty, more than half have made a gift in the last fiscal year. Staff giving is equally notable, said Pat, with 54 percent of unclassified employees having made a new building commitment in the last fiscal year.

“The level of participation of faculty and staff during the first year of the campaign is important to highlight because it reflects the commitment and pride the School’s family has for serving our missions of education, research, and service,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Clinton, D.M.D. ’64.

Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon Draws Big Crowd

Updates on the School’s new building (see page one) along with the backdrop of 18 reunions for classes ending in “2” and “7” energized the Alumni Association’s April 14 Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon during Oregon Dental Conference Weekend. Nearly 230 alumni, faculty, dental students and friends attended the lunch.

“We are in a period of transformation,” said Interim Dean Gary Chiodo, D.M.D. ’78, F.A.C.D. “Our transition includes changes in faculty, a search for a new dean, and programmatic and leadership changes to keep the curriculum up-to-date technologically.”

Ryan Blair, D.M.D. ’00, Fred Bremner, D.M.D. ’64, Martin Burbano, D.M.D. ’98, Rich Knight, D.M.D. ’79, Fred Kreutzer, D.M.D. ’64, and Christopher Kyles, D.M.D. ’12, who served as his class’s representative, were recognized for completing service with the board. The slate of officers for 2012-2013 was presented and

Annual meeting attendees also approved an amendment to the Alumni Association’s mission (see the spring 2012 Caementum). A number of awards and scholarships were presented to dental alumni, students, and faculty.

Three faculty received the Alumni Association’s Faculty Legacy Award for their impact on generations of dentists: Jim Tinkle, D.M.D. ’79 (left), professor emeritus of endodontology; Robert Todd, D.M.D. ’59, chair of removable prosthodontics, whose award was accepted posthumously by his son, Bradley (second from left) and granddaughters, Taylor (third from left), and Ashley; and Fred Cowan, Honorary Alumnus ’96, and head of pharmacology (Inset), who was unable to attend the luncheon due to a prior commitment.

Rick Asai, D.M.D. ’81 (left), presented the Ted Green Memorial Award to third-year dental student Clark Brinton, who received $500 for his essay paralleling his experiences with dental school patients to custom cabinetry.

Alumnus of the Year: Jay Lamb, D.M.D. ’80

Eugene dentist and ODS Health Board Chair Jay Lamb, D.M.D. ’80, received the 2012 John C. Peterson Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. “I really do appreciate this recognition,” he said. “It is special because it comes from you, the alumni.

“Thirty-six years ago, I was given a terrific opportunity to go to dental school and it changed my life.”

Dr. Lamb received a bachelor of science in general science from the University of Oregon, attended OHSU for his doctor of dental medicine from 1976 to 1980, and went into private practice in Eugene.

Dr. Lamb holds fellowships in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists.

He has received the Oregon Dental Association Presidential Citation and the Dentist of the Year Award from the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Lamb has served the Lane County Dental Society for more than 30 years, acting as a committee chair for a number of years and serving as secretary-treasurer and vice president. He was longtime board chair of ODS Health and volunteers regularly within the community and internationally.

Dr. Lamb has demonstrated his commitment and contribution to the future of dental education in Oregon as an advisor in dentistry to the Lane Community College Board and as a member of the OHSU Blue Ribbon Panel for its School of Dentistry.

“With the chance to go to dental school came a duty, and that duty is to support others who want to go into the dental profession,” he said.

Dr. Lamb said the commoditization of dentistry is making dentists competitive with one another. One way to combat that trend is with a strong dental school and a strong Alumni Association, he said.

Dr. Lamb said that dentists need to use their heads to support research and make strong ethical decisions, use their hands to participate in dental education, and use their wallet to recognize “the gift we have been given and to extend that opportunity to others.”

Dr. Lamb and his wife, Tina, have two sons, one of whom, Kyle, graduated from OHSU School of Medicine in 2011. The Lambs are avid Duck fans and Dr. Lamb enjoys cycling.

School of Dentistry Participates in First Virtual Fair

OHSU School of Dentistry was one of about 30 United States dental schools participating in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA)’s first Dental School Virtual Fair in late June, said Mark Mitchell, M.A., Honorary Alumnus ’08, associate dean for student affairs.

The goal of the Virtual Fair was to offer students interested in dentistry an online networking experience.

Participants had a number of presentations they could “attend” – from finance to application tips – and the ability in real-time to connect with top dental professionals across the country.

“It was just as if we set up a booth at a recruitment fair to meet prospective applicants, except instead of talking in person we were chatting online,” said Mark. “We fielded some good questions about OHSU School of Dentistry. The Virtual Fair appears to be the way of the future.”

Dental Continuing Education to be Reinvigorated Through OHSU/OAGD Collaboration

OHSU School of Dentistry and the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry announced big news in August. The two entities have agreed to partner to offer continuing education in Oregon, a one-of-a-kind alliance that will transform course offerings for oral health professionals.

“We are so excited about this new collaboration,” said OHSU School of Dentistry Interim Dean Gary Chiodo, D.M.D. ’78, F.A.C.D. “This kind of arrangement has never been tried anywhere before and we think it’s an optimal and cost-effective model that will be a win-win for everyone in the Oregon dental community. Oregon AGD values continuing education and life-long learning as a foundational element of its mission. This partnership will join the forces of two great organizations in an effort to move the continuing dental education enterprise forward on an impressive trajectory.”

The partnership is expected to breathe new life into continuing dental education offerings in the state with more and varied speakers and courses, and a new method of delivering continuing dental education to remote parts of the state.

“This is an amazing opportunity,” agreed Aaron Tinkle, D.M.D. ’06, Oregon AGD President for 2012. “The partnership combines OAGD’s well-recognized expertise in speaker and study club management and administration, with OHSU’s name recognition and continuing education classroom and clinic space, for a very mutually beneficial arrangement that will advance both organization’s missions.”

Under the agreement, signed June 29, OHSU’s continuing education clinic, located on the ground floor of the School of Dentistry, will become the OHSU/OAGD continuing education department at the Kenneth Cantwell Continuing Education

Clinic, said Phyllis Beemsterboer, M.S., Ed.D., associate dean for academic affairs. Kris Wessel, Ph.D., M.S., a longtime health care education consultant, has been named director of the new department.

“Our first goal is to move to an online course registration mechanism which is incredibly exciting,” said

Dr. Beemsterboer. “Once we get the administration down, we will begin to add innovative new courses and speakers. By combining our resources, OHSU and OAGD will be able to bring more nationally-recognized speakers to Oregon, which will provide more opportunities for Oregon oral health professionals, saving them time and money by not having to travel for their dental education.”

The partnership discussions began about one year ago, said 2011 OAGD President Scott Hansen, D.M.D. ’87, M.A.G.D.

“With the impending retirement of OHSU’s continuing dental education director who was managing the dental school’s courses and speakers, and our continual need to obtain quality clinic space for our one dozen study clubs, [Dean Emeritus] Jack Clinton [D.M.D. ’64] and I realized that each of us already had what the other needed and the partnership idea was born,” said Dr. Hansen. “But the ball really got rolling when OAGD made a $250,000 gift to OHSU School of Dentistry for its new building on South Waterfront, so we could ensure there would be a space in the facility for continuing dental education.”

At that point, said Dr. Hansen, the OAGD board agreed to proceed with a partnership and secretary/treasurer Kimberly Wright, D.M.D. ’89, M.A.G.D., took the lead in drafting an agreement. “It is very unusual that two such groups as OHSU and OAGD have a symbiotic relationship; this is not the case in many other dental communities,” said Dr. Wright. “Oregon AGD has been blessed to have a good working relationship with OHSU for all these years and dental professionals benefit greatly from this relationship.

“Oregon AGD is looking to innovate how we educate not only our dentists, but the whole dental team to provide the best care to patients,” said Dr. Wright. “We also have visions of more online continuing education opportunities as we move forward.

“We expect this to be a very fruitful and productive union to benefit dentistry in Oregon.”

Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry Kevin Kwiecien, D.M.D. ’95, is the School’s new director of Faculty Dental Practice, Patient Admitting, and Urgent Care.

“I’m excited for all three parts of my new job, as I think they’re all essential for the school,” said Dr. Kwiecien. Dr. Kwiecien will examine current processes and systems and implement strategic improvements in the School’s urgent care. Last year, he was on an ad hoc committee that explored the patient admitting process and he hopes to use some of what he learned to revamp the admissions system so that patients are more evenly and efficiently matched with students to expedite treatment. And with his passion to run a

“high-level” group practice, he is especially looking forward to his role as director of the Faculty Dental Practice.

A Nevada native, Dr. Kwiecien completed his undergraduate education at the University of Nevada, Reno. He attended OHSU School of Dentistry from 1991 to 1995, graduating with honors in endodontics and restorative dentistry.

After dental school graduation, Dr. Kwiecien was an associate for one year with James L. Davis, D.M.D. ’64, in Reno, and worked one day a week as a dentist with the Northern Nevada Job Corps. He then purchased Dr. Davis’ practice, his first of two that he has owned.

In 1999, Dr. Kwiecien relocated to Portland. He was an associate at Tigard Tender Care for one year and then he purchased the practice of Donald Stoffer, D.M.D. ’61, which he subsequently moved to Southwest Barnes Road, what is now 360 Dentistry. In June of 2010, Michelle Crocker, D.M.D. ’04, a participant in Dr. Kwiecien’s study club, purchased 360 Dentistry.

Dr. Kwiecien joined the School’s restorative dentistry department in 2008 as an adjunct assistant professor and became an assistant professor in June of 2010.

Dr. Kwiecien has been course director of the second-year fixed prosthodontics class, a four-term course, a role he plans to continue. He also lectures in the Advanced Restorative Dentistry course led by Tom Hilton, D.M.D., M.S. ’03, Honorary Alumnus ’08, Alumni Centennial professor of restorative dentistry.

“I’ve been influenced by the best teachers and clinicians in dentistry,” he said. “I enjoy teaching more than almost anything else in dentistry.”

Dr. Kwiecien is a graduate of The Pankey Institute, previous president of the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry (OAGD), and has earned his fellowship in the OAGD. He is a visiting faculty member at the Spear Institute in Scottsdale, Ariz., lectures nationally, and is currently working on a master’s degree in healthcare management at OHSU, which he hopes to complete next spring.

Faculty FocusNew Pediatric Dentistry Department Chair is 1974 Specialty Graduate

It’s not uncommon to hear John Engle, D.D.S., Pediatric Dentistry ’74, whistling or singing as he walks down the School hallways.

“You can’t have a bad day in a children’s practice,” said Dr. Engle, who was appointed chair of the pediatric dentistry department July 1. “You always have to be a little lighter than with adults. Every day is another chance to laugh.”

Dr. Engle grew up in southern California outside of Los Angeles and he attended Chico State College. In 1972, Dr. Engle received his doctor of dental science from UCLA School of Dentistry, and then a pediatric dentistry certificate from OHSU School of Dentistry in 1975. He studied dental materials for three years with longtime Professor of Restorative Dentistry David Mahler, Ph.D., Honorary Alumnus ’96, and is a thesis shy of his master’s degree.

After graduation from OHSU, Dr. Engle attended auto shop courses at Portland Community College and even worked with a local race car driver before opening a private pediatric practice in Oregon City. In 1976, he joined the surgical staff of Willamette Falls Hospital and was on the part-time faculty at the dental school.

Over the years, Dr. Engle’s practice grew. He earned the Award of Excellence from the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the Award of Merit from the Southern California Society of Dentistry for Children, and Fellowship in the Academy of Dental Materials.

In 2006, Dr. Engle joined the OHSU faculty full-time as an assistant professor. He became director of the pre-doctoral curriculum for pediatric dentistry a year later and was then asked to become interim chair from 2009 to 2010.

“We are in a tremendously transitional time in the pediatric dentistry department,” said Dr. Engle, who retired from private practice last year. “We not only have the challenge of leadership transitions, but we are also planning for a new physical plant.

“I’m really excited to take on these challenges,” he said. “We have a great group of people from faculty down to support staff. One of the things I like about our department is that we have our own clinical space, so are able to develop more personal relationships with our students and residents and really get to know them as people.”
