Nottingham University Hospitals NHS TrustNottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is a major trauma centre that provides services to the 2.5 million residents of Nottingham and its surrounding communities and specialist services to a further 3-4 million across the region.

NUH is comprised of two campuses – Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham University City Hospital, with established networks with King’s Mill Hospital.

NUH is one of the largest employers in the region with around 14,000 people making up ‘team NUH.’, in addition to 1,300 volunteers and 14,500 public members.

NUH is a large referral and trauma centre with links to Nottingham University. The university links allow for the development of innovative research and the opportunity to develop clinical interests.

■ Queen’s Medical Centre is our emergency care site where our Emergency Department, Major Trauma Centre and the Nottingham Children’s Hospital are located. The site features a tram station and has access to Park & Ride.

■ Nottingham City Hospital is where most elective care is undertaken. It is one of the largest cancer centres in the country and a major site for the conduct of national and international clinical trials. Renal and respiratory services are provided on this site. There are regional services in haematology, cardiology, urology and stroke medicine including a dedicated hyperacute stroke unit.

Diagnostic Imaging Department The Diagnostic Imaging Department is part of the Clinical Support Division at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUH).

The department undertakes approximately 450,000 diagnostic examinations each year across the two main hospital sites providing a comprehensive range of radiology services to the East Midlands.

The department has an annual turnover of £35 million and employs 450 staff across the following professions: • 51 medical consultants• 42 medical trainees• 89 nursing • 193 radiography and sonography • 75 admin & clerical

A comprehensive service is off ered to adults and children at NUH locally and regionally covering in patients, out patients, direct access from GP services and the Emergency Department which supports the NUH Major Trauma Centre.

Close academic links to Nottingham University allows the department to pursue innovative research and radiologists to develop their academic portfolios.

To run the department effi ciently there are 4 MRI scanners (including one 3T), 5 CT scanners, 22 Ultrasound and 23 X- ray machines. There are dedicated biplanar Neurointerventional suites at Queen’s Medical Centre.

Recently the region procured new PACS system via EMRAD consortium. This will link 7 hospitals PACS systems to allow seamless transfer of images and aims to enable future regional reporting and home working.

In addition to this an established partnership with King’s Mill Hospital should allowe cross site workings with some staff undertaking clinical sessions across the two sites.

The Specialty Diagnostic Imaging is part of the Clinical Support Division, the largest within the Trust.

The department provides a sub-specialty and general radiological service across the Trust. Consultant radiologists are grouped into sub-specialties concerned with the provision of general and specialist care in their area of interest.

The Clinical Support Division is overseen by Dr David Selwyn, the Clinical Director, with management leadership provided by Sara Bharmal and Nicola Kennedy.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department is divided into three operational management teams who are led by:• Dr Jagrit Shah (Neuroradiology, Head and Neck, MSK, US

and MRI) • Dr Rajpal Dhingsa (Body Imaging, CT and Intervention)• Dr Katharine Halliday (Paediatric Imaging, Nuclear

Medicine, Plain Film, Fluoroscopy, External and Unscheduled Referrers)

Each management team is made up of senior managers, radiographers, sonographers, nurses and support staff .

The TeamThe thoracic team at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is well established, supportive and actively involved in developments of the sub-specialty at a national and international level.

The team has access to a large lung cancer service, a regional interstitial lung disease unit, a newly built cystic fi brosis unit, and an infectious disease unit, as well as a large critical care unit. Additionally, the cardiothoracic surgery is on-site.

Members of the thoracic radiology team are representatives for the Royal College of Radiologists and have written national guidelines on KP and lung biopsy. Team member Professor Baldwin is the NICE lead for Lung Cancer and is involved in multiple national boards. For those looking to undertake research or involvement in academic work, there are considerable opportunities available.

Thoracic Radiology

This role is required to meet the continuing needs of the thoracic service within thoracic imaging and provide an on-call service (presently 1:15).

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic, motivated individual who is able to work successfully in a team as well as develop new services and skills. They will be expected to collaborate with the thoracic and body radiologists to maintain and enhance a comprehensive thoracic imaging service, support the growth of the thoracic radiology service and facilitate the development of a comprehensive thoracic service for local and regional patients.

The post will have a commitment to support a range of diagnostic services, including body non-vascular interventions such as lung biopsies, pleural aspirations, drainages and interventional oncology, CT, MRI, plain fi lm reporting and ultrasound examinations.

Candidates must hold the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists or an equivalent qualifi cation and must either be on the Specialist Register, or in possession of a CCT at the time of taking up the appointment.

An appropriate period of specialist thoracic training and experience with advanced imaging techniques is desirable, as is a track record in research, it is anticipated that the thoracic service will expand to include greater cardiac imaging.

The post holder will be expected to participate in undergraduate and post graduate training. There is access to a PA support who co-ordinates activity across the team and ensures all work is covered.

The department provides direct access for lung cancer referrals. There is a large number of bone marrow transplant services.

Areas of research interest include: interstitial lung diseases, smoking lung diseases and lung cancer.

We are searching for a full-time Consultant Thoracic Radiologist with a responsibility in Thoracic Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology.

The Job Plan

Due to the close academic links with Nottingham University the Trust has a research strategy and management framework which allows consultants to undertake approved research activities as well as the opportunity to have access to in-house mentoring for development of skills.

Team based timetable with cross cover, including sessions in:• CT • MDT• Plain Film• SPA’s• Intervention• US• MRI• On-call with time off in-lieu• Lung Volume Reduction Surgery • Intersticial Lung Disease (Regional meeting) • Cystic Fibrosis Unit

Whilst the thoracic service is mainly provided at City campus, there will be a requirement to provide imaging at both sites and on-call for both sites. There may be scope in the future to provide Interventional services across the region in the future.

The job plan would be a team job plan encompassing all 4 thoracic radiologists, to include cross cover for interventional and diagnostic sessions and meetings.

The initial on-call commitment is currently 1:15, supported by junior staff , a neuroradiology consultant and vascular consultant on-call. There is likely to be a move towards a scheduled weekend work pattern.

This post is deemed to be in Category C and an allowance is paid for being on-call, which is currently 3%.

Training in cardiac, MRI and/or CT would be of value and could be accommodated.

The role will be providing sessions primarily at the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital with some sessions undertaken at King’s Mill Hospital.

All consultants have an annual appraisal and job planning session, and new consultants are reviewed at three and six months following appointment.
