Consumer rightsTRANSCRIPT
Consumer participate in market when they purchase good and
services.
THEY ARE SUBJECTS TO EXPLOITATION
LIKEWISE THERE ARE RULES AND
REGULATIONS FOR THE PROTECTION OF
THEIR RIGHTS.
THERE IS A NEED TO PROTECT CONSUMER INTEREST AS
TRADERS INDULGE IN UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES
SUCH AS SELLING ADULTERATES GOODS,
PASSING ON FALSE INFORMATION THROUGH
MEDIA,ETC.
•ROSE OUT OF DISSATISFACTION OF
CONSUMERS AGAINST UNFAIR PRACTICES .
•THERE WAS NO LEGAL SYSTEM AVAILABLE TO
PROTECT AGAINST EXPLOITATION.
CONSUMERS INTERNATIONAL : A UN BODY OF 240
ORGANISATIONS FOR PROTECTION SET UP IN 1985.
UN GUIDELINES FOR CONSUMER PROTECTION ARE A TOOL FOR NATIONS TO ADOPT MEASURES TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AND
FOR CONSUMER ADVOCACY GROUPS TO FORCE THEIR GOVERNMENTS TO DO SO
THE CONSUMER MOVEMENT IN INDIA STARTED IN AN ORGANIZED FROM IN THE 1960s DUE TO THE FOLLOWING:
•UNETHICAL AND UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES
•RAMPANT FOOD SHORTAGES•HOARDING AND BLACK
MARKETING •ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND
EDIBLE OIL
CONSUMER PROTECTION
ACT (COPRA) : IN 1986 INDIAN GOVERNMENT
PASSED THE COPRA TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AGAINST UNFAIR AND
UNETHICAL TRADE PRACTICES OF
PRODUCERS AND SELLERS.
Ways in which
consumers can exercise their rights to get a fair deal
Producers need to strictly follow required safety rules
and regulations .
In order to maintain products quality, however, both government and public
actions are needed
CONSUMER HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE PROTECTED AGAINST THE MARKETING
OF GOODS AND DELIVERY OF SREVICES THAT ARE HAZARDOUS
TO THEIR LIFE AND PROPERTY.
Consumers have the right to be informed about the particulars
of goods and services they
purchase
This will help consumers to
complain and ask for compensation or
replacement if the product is defective.
Right to information act : enacted in October 2005, it empowers
citizens of a country to seek information
held by a government office
It is the right to choose a product or a service of a
customer regardless of age, gender and nature of service
Consumers cannot be forced into purchasing goods
services they may not want
Customers have the right to seek redressal against unfair
trade practices and exploitation
Customers can seek compensation depending
upon the degree of damage
Consumer movement has led to
formation of various local forums or
consumer councils
They guide consumer on how to file cases in
consumers courts and represent themselves
Right to be aware of consumer rights through separate departments of consumer affairs in
central and state governments
Through awareness via posters,
advertisements on television, consumers
will be able to discriminate and make informed
choices
Commodities carry logos and certification
of ISI, agmark or hallmark on cover,
which indicates that producers have followed certain quality standards
FAILURE OF CONSUMER MOVEMENT Consumer redressal process
is a cumbersome process as in most cases cash memos
are not issued which means lack of evidence and many times consumers are supposed to engage layers.
EXISTING LAW DOES NOT SPECIFY ON ISSUE OF
COMPENSATION TO CONSUMERS
RULES AND REGULATIONS OF
MARKETS ARE NOT FOLLOWED
NEVERTHLESS, THERE IS SCOPE FOR CONSUMERS TO REALISE THEIR
ROLE AND IMPORTANCE. IT IS OFTEN SAID THAT CONSUMER MOVEMENTS CAN BE EFFECTIVE ONLY WITH THE CONSUMERS ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT. IT REQUIRES A VOLUNTARY EFFORT
AND STRUGGLE INVOLCING THE PARTICIPATION OF ONE AND ALL
