President’s ReportWith 2011 drawing to an end, we can reflectontheyear’shighlights…

We have celebrated the International Year of Chemistry with our students through the Science Talent Search, the Science Drama

Awards and National Science Week.

STAV has continued to support Science education in Victoria through our Conferences, Workshops, Educational Resources such as trial exams, Handbooks and kits, through our publications; Contact, Lab Talk and Let’s Find Out, through the establishment of a social networking presence on Twitter and Facebook and through our involvement on Advisory Boards and communication with the DEECD, the VCAA, the Tertiary sector (Deans of Science and Education), In2science Peer Mentoring, the CSIRO and as ASTA Councillors as part of our national federation.

TheF–10AustralianCurriculumSciencewasratifiedwiththefinalAustralianCurriculumcontentandachievement standards endorsed on 14 October 2011. Trialling commenced in schools across the state for its implementation in 2013 and preparation commenced in earnest for the transition to AusVELS.

The Australian Curriculum Science Senior Years continuedtobediscussedandreviewedwiththefinaldocument to be released in early 2012.

Science Talent Search Report Dates for the Science Talent Search 2012 are in this newsletter. All entry is by online registration and the registration site opens in early March.

The theme for 2012 is Sustainability and our Environment.

The set topics for the Posters and Creative Writing are on the STS website.

The 2012 handbook will be available on the STS website from late January (www.sciencevictoria.com.au/sts/index.html ). If you want to start STS early in the term this is the best place to get information. The hard copy will be sent to individual members and subscriber schools with the February edition of Contact.

Look out for ideas on resources and excursions on the website and in the February Contact STS report to stimulate your students’ interest in next year’s theme.

As always, the STS committee needs new members for 2012 to replace those who are retiring. There are 5 committee meetings each year, plus Judging day in August and Presentation day at the beginning of November. STAV is offering opportunities for schools to participate in small group sessions of customised learning in one or all of these areas. You can form a small group of teachers within your own school or in partnership with a neighbouring school. You can participate in a short one or two hour session, a series of three or four sessions or have a mentor visit your classroom to assist you to apply new skills or ideas.
