From the Desk Of Fr. John The celebration of both Confirmation and First Communion with Bishop Paprocki was a beautiful and joyful experience. This was our first experience as a parish with the ‘Restored Order’ (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist) of the Sacraments of Initiation…the 3rd Graders received both Confirmation and First Eucharist…the 7th Graders received Confirmation (since they have been receiving Communion for sever-al years already). During the next two years, we will be doing this dual (grades 3 and 7) celebration of the sacra-ments with Bishop Paprocki… (Next year the 6th graders will have moved up to 7th grade…and the following year the present 5th graders will then be 7th graders). Therefore, for the next two years we will have two grades (3rd and 7th grad-ers) together for the celebration of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The following years…it will only be the 3rd graders…celebrating Confirma-tion and First Eucharist at the same Mass with Bishop Paprocki presiding. It was a very joy-filled celebration…with so many families sharing their faith and excitement! Caution about the corona virus is encour-aged…washing hands is the simplest and the best way of preventative caution. Bishop Pap-rocki has given other guidelines in the event that things turn for the worse…but we will talk about and plan for those contingencies. Those with compromised immune issues will have already made some strategic decisions for protecting themselves in this regular flu and cold season. We pray that this outbreak will be contained soon…and that those infected will have a safe recovery. The Holy Season of Lent began with Ash Wednesday…as we received the sign of re-pentance on our foreheads with blessed ashes. We were called to ‘Repent, and Believe in the Gospel.’ It is an invitation to ‘look again, after’…meaning to reflect upon our attitudes, behaviors and life style…in retrospection to see what needs to be changed. The thing of it is…that we

are then to act on that insight guided by the Holy Spirit…and make the necessary changes. We were able…through the Gospel lesson…to observe Jesus being tested in the desert by Satan. He was faced with the same temp-tations that the Israelites faced in the desert as they approached the Promised Land. They failed the tests. They challenged Moses and ‘tested’ God. They did not trust the one who was leading them into freedom. They did not trust that He was with them. They did not trust that even in difficulty His provident care and love surrounded them. Again,…they failed the test. However, God was faithful to them. Jesus faced the same tests…symbolized in the very ‘temptations’ presented by Satan…stones to bread…protection from harm…riches and glo-ry. They were all couched in the words of Satan using scripture… ‘If you are the Son of God…’ It was the test to see what kind of Son Jesus was…and if He would use His power for Him-self…for His own glory. Jesus passed the test…He remained every faithful to the Father…and His will…He trusted…and was victorious. We must cling to Christ. We must learn to trust the Father. We must avoid the temptations to use our status…or to gain status…that makes us into our own gods. The Second Sunday of Lent always brings us the Gospel lesson of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus invites three of His disciples to come with Him up the mountain (remember mountains were places of revelation and en-counter with God – Moses, Elijah…). Jesus had given the disciples an insight into His mission…His passion…His death and resurrection. They were overcome not understanding how the Mes-siah would have to endure such a future. There-fore, Jesus gives them this glimpse into His true nature…and His future in the Kingdom of Heav-en…a glimpse of His glory, which would come after His resurrection. This was to encourage the disciples…and us…in our following the Lord on the way!

Penance Services

Thanks to your prayers and gen-erosity, Catholic Charities has been a beacon of hope and help for many in our Diocese. This weekend, you again have the opportunity to reach out to those in need. Over the past 95 years, our Catholic Charities numerous ser-vices have helped thousands of people overcome difficult periods in their lives. The success of its mission is not from the effort of one person or a handful of people. The collective efforts fulfill the mission of the agency "to extend to all the heal-ing and empowering presence of Jesus." We are instructed to bring God's love to everyone we can reach - and that is what Catholic Charities does on a dai-ly basis. Please help Catholic Charities to sustain its mission of addressing the needs of today's families.

The Outreach Ministry wanted to let you know that there will not be a Yard Sale this Octo-ber so that you can make oth-er plans for your clothing do-nations. We have talked with other organizations who do something similar, and they have had the same experi-ence we have—many bags (100+) of leftover items. It ap-pears that there is not a high need for clothing in our area. But, we want to continue our outreach efforts of “Letting It Go” and addressing the needs of those less fortunate in our area. The ministry is planning a series of events (at least one a quarter) to accomplish this. For example, in June or July we will be helping a local church with its new store. If you have any ideas and would like to get them to the Out-reach Ministry, call Marty Wiegers at 618-910-4710.

Tips for Staying Healthy

We are in the flu and cold sea-son and here are some tips to help you avoid contracting them. Experts agree that the best preventative measure is wash-ing your hands correctly. This is what is suggested: —Use soap (does not have to be antibacterial) and water (does not have to be hot). —Lather the whole hand from wrist to fingertips. Wash thumbs and fingers including under nails. —Rinse with water and dry well. When to Wash: —Before eating —After using the toilet —After returning home from public places Interactions at Mass —It is okay to not shake hands

at the Sign of Peace. You can nod, smile and say “peace”

—It is also recommended to receive the Host in your hand, not on your tongue

—Do not receive the Precious Blood if you are sick
