From the Desk Of Fr. John The First Sunday of Lent is the traditional time for Catechumens…those preparing for full ini-tiation into the Catholic Church through Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist…to be formally ‘called’ to those Sacraments by the Bishop. That celebration of the ‘call’ (The Rite of Election) takes place at a special ceremony, which is usually held at the Cathedral Church…after which the Catechu-mens are known and called ‘The Elect.’ Christ is the one who truly calls them to faith and becoming disciples through the sacraments of initiation…and the Bishop listens to the recommendation of the Priests, Catechists, RCIA Team, and the God Par-ents to discern that these candidates/catechumens are ready for their initiation…and then voices the ‘call.’ That celebration took place on March 1 in Spring-field. We did not have any adult Catechumens…but one child who was not able to attend that Rite of Election. There are plans for her initiation to take place outside of the Easter Vigil with the proper permission and delegation from Bishop Paprocki. The whole of the Lenten Season is focused on preparing the ‘Elect’ for full initiation. However, Lent is also the time for all the baptized…that means us…to prepare to celebrate the annual an-niversary…and the ongoing reality…of our becom-ing Christian through the Easter Sacra-ments….which takes place at the Easter Vigil (and by extension on Easter Morning). It is a time of growth and renewal. We undergo purification…and enlightenment…along with the Catechumen Elect throughout the world. We learn again to be faithful disciples…learn again what it means to grow as a disciple…and the mission to reach out to make disciples…bringing them to Christ. The question that Jesus poses to his disciples is very telling. Jesus asks them… ‘Who do people say that I am?’ We know there was much speculation at the time of Jesus…and much ex-pectation for the coming of the Messiah. This all lends to the tension of Jesus’ question. The disci-ples rattle off the many ideas and opinions they have heard…all of which are inadequate and fall short of Jesus’ true nature and mission. So, Jesus probes a little deeper and asks a further ques-tion… ‘Who do you say that I am?’ That is when
Peter utters his famous response… ‘You are the Christ (Messiah-Anointed One), the Son of the liv-ing God.’ Jesus acknowledges Peter’s response as a reve-lation from God the Father and not his own per-sonal insight…it is from God! Jesus then helps flesh out the fuller meaning of ‘Messiah’ by includ-ing details and the prediction of His own passion and death…and resurrection. That is when Peter challenges and argues with Jesus that these things could not happen to God’s Chosen One. The disciples need some help and encouragement to understand Jesus’ mission and their own. Jesus then takes the three disciples up the mountain and reveals a glimpse of His true identity…the Trans-figuration! This vision is to help the disciples when they face all that will take place in Jerusalem with the Passion and Death of Jesus. It also helps us to remain faithful to Jesus in our mission and Chris-tian living. We must…just as the Father has told us…listen to Jesus. There are three ancient and very special Sun-days during Lent…preparing us for the Easter Sacraments and the Mysteries of Jesus’…Passion-Death, Resurrection & Ascension. They consist of the 3rd, 4th & 5th Sundays and their special Gospel lessons from the Gospel of St. John… ‘The wom-an at the well (3rd), the man born blind (4th), and the raising of Lazarus (5th).’ This Sunday…the 3rd Sunday of Lent contains the lesson of the Samari-tan woman at the well. Jesus engages her in a unique dialogue by first asking her for a drink of water…which develops into her coming to a clear faith in Jesus as the Messiah. The Gospel presents the scene at a well…at the middle of the day…alone with a Samaritan wom-an. Jesus reaches out to this woman…which was very against tradition…who happens to be a Sa-maritan…who were hated by the Jews…and who had a sordid history of relationships…which made her unacceptable/outcast to the general popula-tion. However, Jesus overcomes all of these ob-stacles and patiently leads her to faith in him…and she leads others of the community to faith in him by her testimony.

The Catholic Relief Ser-vices collection, a Len-ten almsgiving oppor-tunity, will be next week-end March 21-22. Your support of this collection serves Jesus by helping people in need in some
of the most marginalized communities in our world. For example, migrant farmworkers in California's San Joaquin Valley work 6 am until 7 pm during grape har-vest time. Some workers have lived in the valley for years, renting nearby trailer housing, and others live in towns nearby. Still others are recent migrants from Mexico and Central America. Lay ministers serve all these workers by visiting migrant camps near the
vineyards. They bring religious instruction and share prayer, theological reflection, and Catholic social jus-tice teaching about the inherent dignity and rights of migrant workers. Through funds from this collection, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' programs for the pastoral care of migrants, refugees, and travelers col-laborate with local dioceses to visit and attend to the needs of underserved migrant farm workers and oth-ers who live on the margins. Your support of this collection makes a difference for so many around the globe. Please prayerfully consid-er how you can support the collection this year. To learn more about the collection and the people who benefit, please visitwww.usccb.org/catholic-relief.
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) invites each of us to participate in CRS Rice Bowl during Lent. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program. It offers oppor-tunities for your family to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Meet Yvone from Kenya. She learned proper nutrition and hygiene practices to help keep her healthy and in school. Yvone now has a chance to dream and the strength to follow those dreams. How can you ensure that young peo-ple in your community receive proper nutrition? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. Please take the time to take home a CRS Rice Bowl, located at all the church entrances. If you have any questions, please contact the parish office at 345-4343.

Stay Healthy We are in the flu and cold sea-son and here are some tips to help you avoid contracting them. Experts agree that the best preventative measure is wash-ing your hands correctly. This is what is suggested: —Use soap (does not have to be antibacterial) and water (does not have to be hot). —Lather the whole hand from wrist to fingertips. Wash thumbs and fingers including under nails. —Rinse with water and dry well. When to Wash: —Before eating —After using the toilet —After returning home from public places Interactions at Mass —It is okay to not shake hands
at the Sign of Peace. You can nod, smile and say “peace”
—It is also recommended to receive the Host in your hand, not on your tongue
—Do not receive the Precious Blood if you are sick

Protecting God’s Children
The next training session for Protecting God’s Children is Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 pm in Morris Hall. Please contact the parish office at 345-4343 to register. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish and the Diocese of Springfield strive to provide a safe envi-ronment for our children. This protects our children from harm, including sexual abuse and child molestation. It allows them to feel confident and se-cure in the classroom and at church and parish functions. According to the Safe Environ-ment program of the diocese, all volunteers over age 18 are required to attend a Pro-tecting God’s Children for Adults training session and complete a Policy Certification and Authorization Document, Background Check and Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System (CANTS) Form.
