Principal’s News Farewell and GOODLUCK Year 12. It was great to see Year 12 celebrating their final week at CHS in style. Great costumes, a sense of fun and a relaxing student/staff breakfast allowed for a fitting farewell to their school years. HSC exams commence for them on the 9th of November and we wish each and every one of them nothing but success.

This Wednesday all Year 9 will participate in a virtual workshop focusing on Mental Health and Wellbeing. The workshop will be presented by Batyr, a preventative mental health organisation created and driven by young people, for young people. Staff will also undertake a training workshop during an after-school session.

Last week the school took receipt of forty-three new laptops. These laptops, as part of the School’s Digital Strategy, will once commissioned, replace many of the current old and damaged laptops accessed by students during lesson time. Despite these new additions, CHS is still a BYOD school and students are encouraged to bring their own devices to school each day.

On Thursday the school was notified that it has been selected to participate in TIMSS during March, 2022. TIMSS (Trends

in International Mathematics and Science Study) is a large-scale assessment, conducted by ACER, designed to inform

educational policy and practice by providing an international perspective on teaching and learning in Mathematics and

Science.

HSC Industrial Technology – Metal Major Projects 2021 2021 has been a year that I’m sure Year 12 would rather forget. With state wide lockdowns and the uncertainty of the

HSC examinations, they had a lot to contend with throughout the year. However, in true Canowindra High spirit the In-

dustrial Technology – Metal class rose to the challenge to successfully complete their HSC Major Projects. The students

have worked hard all year designing, planning, researching and manufacturing their chosen project and have produced

functional and quality items.

Sam Brand Sam took on the mammoth task of

manufacturing a fully functional

ute canopy/tool chest. He

developed his skills in marking out,

cutting and fabrication welding to

produce a high-quality product.

Jack DeFreitas Jack designed and fabricated a structurally sound work bench. He knew from the beginning what he wanted to build and remained focussed throughout the whole process of its fabrication.

Jack Dicton Jack wanted to fabricate an art-based wall mounted compass. This project tested his geometry skills to mark out each piece to come together to create an aesthetically pleasing project. Mission accomplished.

Anastasia Grills Anastasia designed and manufactured a fully functional mini pedal car. This project tested her ability to problem solve and utilise great fabrication and assembly skills. Her project definitely exceeded her initial expectations.

Lily Wallace Lily developed very good skills in

metal fabrication with the

completion of her Hanging Egg

Chair. She spent a lot of time

developing the design and created

a very high quality and functional

project.

Jordan Moore Jordan’s ornamental windmill project was detailed and he had a lot of great ideas to successfully complete it. COVID Lockdown caused some issues with Jordan’s material delivery. This allowed him to spend valuable time to plan and hone the design. He completed a very good quality, functional windmill.

Along with each project the students were required to complete a communication portfolio outlining the entire process they undertook to complete their Major Work.

Mr Wilson would like to thank all of the students for their efforts and hard work throughout

the year and wish them good luck in their upcoming HSC examination.

8A Book Reviews

During the recent period of online learning, 8A English completed their novel study on "The Graveyard Book", by Neil Gaiman. The students then composed a book review expressing their views on the novel.

“The Graveyard Book”

Review by Hayley Jessep “The Graveyard Book'' by Neil Gaiman is a courageous attempt at an adventurous novel. It gallantly endeavours to explore the world of a young man, Bod, who tragically loses his parents and sister when he’s a child. The book sees Bod steer-ing his way through a difficult teenage life with the assistance of a community of old fashioned characters, led by the likes of two ghosts, Mr and Mrs Owens and a vampire Silas. “The Graveyard Book” begins as an enthralling and bold story about a boy coming of age in a difficult world. After the death of Bod’s family, the book leads us into a world of ghouls, ghosts and a variety of other spooky characters who take Bod under their wing in an attempt to raise him as a good person. However, Gaiman misses the mark in several places and after the introduction of the main charac-ters the book quickly develops into a dull and dreary story. Within the first few chapters, Gaiman’s evolution of Bod and several of the other characters shifts to neutral and the story starts moving as slow as a snail that it almost begins to stagnate right in front of us. The book features occasional mo-ments of spark, such as when the reader is led to believe that Bod will meet his

demise after falling off the stairs of a gigantic castle, but these are few and far between. Gaiman's story spends a signifi-cant amount of time rambling on about the importance of Bod’s learning, which the reader has the experience first hand when Bod is forced to personally analyse every single headstone within the graveyard that he resides in. The specifics of Bod’s teenage years are explored in far too much detail, so much so that “The Graveyard Book” lacks the dynamics required to keep the reader intrigued and entertained. If anything, Gaiman writes with too much attention to detail that it has a negative effect on the story. “The Graveyard Book” does not feature any real cliffhanger moments and seems never ending, such as when Bod falls out of an apple tree and sprains his ankle. The outcome of this event is that Bod meets Liza Hempstock who, after what seems to be a large build up in the story, turns out to be a minor character who has no real impact on the book. The reader is led to believe that Liza might turn out to be a potential love interest but this is not the case which, in turn, creates a meaning-less sub-story that feels like a big waste of time to the reader. The book is aimed at teenagers and young adults and to an audience who likes novels which feature sub-plots with intricate details, such as “The Hobbit',' then it will hit a bullseye. However, to me, it contained too much filler. Credit must be given to Gaiman for trying to encapsu-late the audience but if you are a reader who enjoys sharp and intense stories then I would suggest you give it a miss and read “Holes” by Louis Sachar instead. In a world of spirits and shadows, Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” should feature plenty of life (lol) and animation, but instead it is a snore-fest that features an abundance of boring and tedious mo-ments. 1 star out of 5.
