Partially funded by the Shenzhen Municipal Govern- ment, Shenzhen Finance Insti- tute (SFI) is an independent affiliate of the Chinese Univer- sity of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) focusing on graduate and doc- toral education and research in the finance and economy- related domains. In January, the Shenzhen government entrusted CUHK(SZ) with the funds and resources to establish the institute. By setting up such an advanced finance institute, the Shenzhen government aims to provide a globally recognized center in the field of economics and finance that nurtures inno- vative talents in order to cultivate a global research base, build international academic exchange platforms and to serve as a stra- tegic planning think-tank, reads the institute’s portal. “Shenzhen is a global financial metropolis that needs its own institute to cultivate high-level finance talents with global per- spectives, and the institute can also serve as a think-tank to pro- vide solid evidence for the city’s strategic planning and mecha- nisms regarding the finance and innovation economy,” said Xu Yangsheng, president of the university, at Thursday’s inaugu- ration ceremony. Xiong Wei, director of SFI and a professor at Princeton University, shared some general information about the institute. There are currently four full-time postgraduate programs available at the institute, namely Master of Science in Finance, Master of Science in Economics, Master of Science in Accounting and Executive Education. The director disclosed that a doctoral program in the field of economics and finance would soon be available for future applicants. The institute has also signed deals with major banks such as People’s Bank of China and Ping An Bank to jointly work on cultivating post- doctoral researchers. Xiong pointed out in his speech that China’s economy has made a successful shift from the stage of speedy development to quality development. Thus, the institute has also set up several research centers to provide valuable theoretical foundations and meaningful results that can better serve the real economy in Shenzhen and the nation as a whole. The institute has already enrolled two batches of 163 students and the enrollment of part-time postgraduates in finance programs for 2018 has begun. A forum focusing on economic development trends in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was held at the institute’s new location after the inauguration ceremony. With support from the Meisha Subdistrict Office, the service center has enacted projects to protect and cultivate artificial coral in the sea area since June this year. It has already put 25 artificial coral reefs into the sea and cultivated 5,000 corals. A diving coach, surnamed Liang, said he is often shocked by the beauty of the corals he encounters while diving in the sea off the Meisha area. “It feels fantastic to walk through the corals and see all kinds of color- ful fish,” said Liang.
