LIVE THE LITURGY It is not easy to confront someone who has wronged or hurt us. But it is absolutely necessary to do so in order for reconciliation to occur. We are taught to mind our own business and keep our thoughts to ourselves. When we have been hurt or wronged and we do not acknowledge and give voice to it, those feelings of hurt remain in our hearts and can eventually turn into anger. Verbalizing our feelings can diffuse them, and communicating how we actually feel brings honesty to our relationships. This is the only way that the path of love can remain open and that integrity and mutual respect can be maintained. It is no wonder that Jesus absolutely insisted upon healthy and compassionate confrontation. People don’t always realize that they are doing harm. Bringing this to light is not only good for the one who is hurt but for the one who caused the pain. The new insight and revelation may prevent the action from being repeated again.

Saturday Evening Mass We have not been able to have Saturday evening Mass at Prince of Peace Care Center due to COVID-19. That is still the case today. I have decided to offer the 5pm Mass on Saturday at St. Helena’s. I am working with the staff to find the best day and time for a weekday Mass at Prince of Peace. This decision was motivated by other factors than the situation caused by the virus. Quite honestly, the attendance and participation at this Mass fluctuates greatly. Your participation is needed for this Mass to continue. It is not only attendance at Mass, but also a willing spirit to participate as a reader, usher, altar server, and EMHC. It is stressful for me to ask for volunteers at the last minute. Let us know if you are willing to help. For those on the ministry schedule, please respond to the Flocknote message sent Aug. 5. We need to know if you are willing to be scheduled on Saturdays. Thank you. Fr. Asselin
Bricks and mortar. “Tell the church.” Dear friends in Christ,
Today’s Gospel tackles a difficult topic: correcting someone who has sinned. Was Saint Matthew just a legalist? Is that why he gave us a detailed list for fraternal correction? (He was a tax collector before Jesus called him!) If the sinner refuses to listen to several witnesses, Jesus says, “tell the church.” Does that imply talking to a brick wall? The glossary in the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines “Church” as:
The name given the “convocation” or “assembly” of the People God has called together from “the ends of the earth.” In Christian usage, the word “Church” has three inseparable meanings: The People that God gathers in the whole world; the particular or local church (diocese); and the liturgical (above all Eucharistic) assembly. The Church draws her life from the Word and the Body of Christ, and so herself becomes Christ’s Body. In the Creed, the sole Church of Christ is professed to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. (emphasis added)
If the Church is truly receiving life from the Word and the Body of Christ, and for her to become Christ’s body in the world, her leaders must be held to a high standard. In his book, Fire of Mercy, Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis writes, “The face of the Church shows the Face of Christ himself to the world, and therefore vigilance concerning the beauty and integrity of that Face is a paramount responsibility of all Christians, particularly those in a position of authoritative witness. No member of the Church has the right to be a radical individualist with
a creed and a moral code of his own.” (p. 636)
Two Catholic priests made the news recently. One situation involved valid baptism, while another priest made personal, public comments about life issues. Unfortunately, we have become too familiar with stories of misbehaving church leaders. These two events caused me think about the Church. The Vatican released a document clarifying the proper words to use during baptism. In the second situation, the priest retracted his words at the request of his bishop. So, what is the value of telling the church when someone refuses the other steps of correction?
Is fraternal correction in the Church less useful in 2020, especially since the Church appears to be imperfect? It’s easy to lose the needle in the haystack. Bringing someone to the church for correction, we should expect that the church is drawing her life from the Word and the Body of Christ—that she is standing on the principles of truth handed down to us from our Savior. Only then is the church truly the Body of Christ in the world. The correction is not coming from specific leaders, it is Christ himself, acting through the Church. The leaders ought to be obedient to Christ.
This short article cannot adequately explain all the intricacies of “Church.” However, my point is singular: pray for the Holy Father, our bishop, and for all priests. Individual leaders may stumble or fall, but remember the words of Jesus, “the gates of hell will not prevail against the church.”
