ST. ANTHONY’S INQUIRY CLASS – OPEN TO ALL Join us this Thursday for a session taught by Fr. Courtright on The Life of Christ, as seen through the mysteries of the Rosaries. Whether Catholic or not, you are welcome to attend. In addition, we always schedule time for questions and answers – so if you have a question about anything in regards to faith, religion, or spirituality, join us this Thursday at 7:00 PM in Room 203 (Cabrini Rm).

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED Thank you to those who have responded to the call for volunteers with the Bethany Homes Mass at 10:00 AM on Friday mornings. We are still in need of more generous volunteers to help bring Christ to those we serve at Bethany. Please contact Deacon Stu Longtin with any questions and to sign up to help!

LENTEN SCRIPTURE STUDY: CONVERSION When you hear the word “conversion,” what comes to mind? Catholicism defines “conversion” as a life-long process of turning one’s attention and energy toward an ever-deepening relationship with Christ. Join us this Lent, for the DVD-based program, Conversion: Following the Call of Christ, presented by Bishop Robert Barron. The program begins on Monday, February 19 at St. Anthony’s. Sessions will run from 3:00 - 4:00 PM Mondays in Rm 203 (Cabrini Rm). Contact Fr. Karnik (701-237-6063) or Joan Schaefer (701-364-0444) if you have questions.

ADORERS NEEDED Have you considered spending an additional hour with Our Lord per week? Our Adoration Chapel has openings for adorers on Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:00 PM and 11:00 – 11:59 PM. We are also looking for substitutes that cannot dedicate themselves weekly, but would be open to filling in occasionally. If interested, please call the parish office (701-237-6063) or email Samantha at [email protected]. Come and rest with Him awhile!

LENTEN ALMSGIVNIG Donations from our upcoming Ash Wednesday offertory will go to the following organizations: St. Anthony of Padua’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference and St. Gianna’s Maternity Home. Lenten offertory and canister donations will go to the following organizations: New Life Center, Churches United for the Homeless, and St. Anthony of Padua’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Thank you for your past and future sacrificial giving.

NOTE: BETHANY HOMES Ashes at Bethany Homes (201 University Dr S) will be distributed, as done in the past, after the 10:00 AM ecumenical service on Ash Wednesday for those who wish to receive them.

SEMINARIAN PROFILE

Eric Seitz Home parish: Sts. Anne & Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo Seminarian Status: Theology III, St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN Biography: I was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on September 23, 1992. My Dad was in the Air Force, so we moved around a lot, from South Dakota to South Carolina, to Norway, to Great Falls, Montana, until we settled in Fargo in the summer of 2008. I first started thinking

about the priesthood in the seventh grade, but I didn’t become too serious about it until the end of my junior year in high school. During my senior year, I applied to the diocese and was accepted. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to serve the Lord in such a radical way. Do you ever have any fun? What do you do in your free time? I have to be careful not to have too much fun. I do like playing basketball and football, despite not being great at either. What I really enjoy is music, both listening to it and performing it. Here at Sacred Heart, I am in the choir and I also cantor at mass. I have a vinyl record player from the 1950s with an eclectic collection of records that I use to drive my study-mates crazy. If you were not a priest, what do you think you would be? I would like to be a teacher , or maybe a police officer. Unless I could be Batman. Always be Batman. How many brothers and sisters do you have? I have three older brothers and one younger sister . What is your favorite TV program? I enjoy Doctor Who, along with Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Twilight Zone. How is a seminary different than a regular school? How often do you see your family? I’d say that the seminary is almost like any other fraternity, except it replaces drinking with prayer and study. I don’t get to see my family too often, but I do call every week. What do you enjoy most while studying to be a priest? What I enjoy the most is living in a genuinely Catholic culture. I think having a strong Catholic identity and culture is something that is sorely lacking in the Church today, but I do get to experience it here at the seminary. What is your favorite quote or saying? “Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair .” ~G.K. Chesterton

Parish Calendar

Diocese of Fargo Lent and Easter Regulations

The penitential days for the universal Church are each Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday (February 14, 2018) marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is an opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of Easter. The following regulations are observed in this sacred season: Abstinence Catholics 14 years of age or older must abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. It is only on the other Fridays of the year that abstinence may be substituted by another form of penance. Fasting Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 (inclusive) are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. There is a limit of one full meal and no food between meals on those days. Two smaller meals are permitted as needed to maintain one’s strength. Sacrament of Penance All the faithful who have reached the age of reason are bound faithfully to confess their grave sins at least once a year. Lent is a good time to fulfill this precept of the Church. Anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion without previously having been to sacramental confession (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), 1457). Holy Communion Catholics who have received their First Holy Communion are obliged to make a worthy reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Lenten or Easter seasons. In the United States, this reception of Holy Communion should take place from the first Sunday in Lent (February 18) through Trinity Sunday (May 27). Other Lenten Observances Each weekday of Lent is also an obligatory day of penance. Some recommendations include the participation in daily Mass, increased prayer or spiritual study, self-imposed fasting or abstinence, works of charity, and participation in traditional Lenten devotions (parish missions, Stations of the Cross, Rosary).

The proper context for all Lenten discipline is the conversion of our hearts. As the Catechism states, however, “interior conversion urges expression in visible signs, gestures, and works of penance.” These penances help us to redirect our whole life to God and away from the sin and evil we have committed (CCC, 1430-1439). As we celebrate our Lenten penitential practices, may we experience this conversion of heart and be strengthened in our faith in God’s mercy. May our discipline, through God’s grace, lead us to full participation in the eternal Easter.
