Shortly after that hearing, project studies were suspended due to funding limitations. The purpose of the March 2008 public hearing was to present the final design for the US 64 Bypass. Property owners and residents had an opportunity to see specific impacts to their properties. Since 2008, the design has been modified slightly, although impacts will not have changed for most property owners. The design will be shown again at the upcoming hearing, but this time the official transportation corridor also will be presented. Individuals will have another opportunity to make verbal statements during the November hearing. Purpose of the Transportation Corridor Official Map Act Public Hearing When NCDOT is planning a major new road, property that will be needed to build the road in the future may be placed in what is called a “Protected Corridor”. A protected corridor is the land NCDOT expects it will need to build a new road. This land (or corridor) is “protected” from certain activities, such as construction that re- quires building permits. Corridor protection minimizes the impact on property owners and the number of peo- ple who will be affected or displaced.
