Increasingly, travelers from the Northeast and Midwest are zipping through Randolph County. And that’s a good

thing. Because in this case, zipping refers to the Richland Creek ZipLine Canopy Tour.

A zipline is an inclined cable attached to tree stands well above the ground. A person is secured to the cable in a mountain-climbing type of harness, and gravity allows them to glide – or “zip” – from one tree stand to another.

Ziplines have been around for more than 100 years, but they are a relatively new leisure activity, especially in the United States. When Richland Creek opened in 2008 it was just the second zipline tour in North Carolina, and it remains the only one in Randolph County. But it has quickly become popular, particularly among out-of-state travelers.

“We’ve had people come in from all over the world, but we especially get a lot of people from Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Michigan who stop by on their way to the beach,” says

JoAnn Hammer, who owns and operates Richland Creek along with her husband, Ernest. “We’ve had people tell us that every year when they go to the beach, this is going to be a stopping point for them. We get more people from outside Randolph County than from around here.”

An Innovative Use of LandThe company began because

Ernest Hammer owned a piece of property approximately 5 miles outside Asheboro that had been in his family for years, but he wasn’t sure what to do with it.

“It’s beautiful land, and we’ve always had hikers come through,” JoAnn Hammer says. “We wanted to come up with something where we could keep it natural and available for people to use.”

Then one day Ernest Hammer saw a show about ziplines on the National Geographic Channel. He turned to JoAnn and said, “I think we can do this.” So Ernest began researching ziplines and talked with people throughout the world who were knowledgeable

about them. Eventually the couple brought in an engineer who had constructed ziplines in Colorado and Costa Rica, and after two years of planning, Richland Creek was open for business.

The facility has a total of more than a mile-and-a-quarter of cable spread along 14 different lines, taking customers through the woods, over canyons and alongside streams and waterfalls. A certified guide goes out with each group, though the prospect of soaring amongst the trees can still be initially unnerving to first-timers.

“Some people are a little apprehensive to start with, but afterward they say how great it was,” JoAnn Hammer says. “We had one man who came here four times in a week. It’s gone over really well.”

Richland Creek is open daily (weather permitting) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $40 for adults, $25 for children age 12 and under. Reservations can be made by calling (336) 629-9440 or through email at [email protected].

the largest alkaline battery manufacturer in the world is headquartered in Asheboro, and has

been here for more than 60 years.Energizer Battery has three

facilities in Asheboro and employs more than 700 full-time workers, and also hires part-time employees to help the company during its busier times of the year.

“Energizer is the kind of

company that continues to reinvest in machinery and the latest high-tech equipment, ensuring that it will remain an industrial leader in our community for years to come,” says Bonnie Renfro, president of the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation. “Their employees are also heavily involved in leadership roles throughout Randolph County, serving many organizations.”

The battery-manufacturing giant underwent an expansion not long ago in Asheboro, adding both property space and equipment. Renfro says the local county and city governments, the chamber and the economic development corporation do whatever they can to support Energizer.

“The company has also been a consistent supporter of the training programs provided by Randolph

Business Community College,” she says. “RCC customizes many programs to help train and retrain the company’s new hires and incumbent workers.”

Danny Mull, Energizer Battery spokesperson, says there are many reasons why Asheboro is a great place to do business.

“Excellent interstate traffic access, easy port and rail access, quick distribution access to the major population centers of the Eastern Seaboard, and the availability of skilled and qualified labor are certainly advantages of locating in the Asheboro area,” he says.

Mmm, Malt-O-MealUp until three years ago,

Energizer was the No. 1 taxpayer in Asheboro and Randolph County. Now, Energizer is the second-largest taxpayer, behind Malt-O-Meal Company.

“Minneapolis-based Malt-O-Meal established a manufacturing

facility and began making cereal in Asheboro in 2009,” Renfro says. “Then in the fall of 2010, they already announced a major expansion to add cereal lines, buildings and a new warehouse. Once this latest overall expansion is complete, Malt-O-Meal will have invested more than $250 million in Asheboro, and will employ more than 250 people.”

The Malt-O-Meal facility in Asheboro produces cereal and oatmeal in bag form, and sells the products in supermarkets across the United States.

“It’s the best instant oatmeal I’ve ever tasted,” Renfro says. “It is outstanding.”

Spanx, Bearings and TiresMeanwhile, Asheboro has other

large companies that contribute to the city’s industrial presence and manufacturing footprint. Acme-McCrary Corporation

produces Spanx garments and undergarments for women, while Timken Company makes tapered roller bearings found in large aircraft and the space shuttle.

Oliver Rubber Company produces tires used in the retread business, and Hyosung USA manufactures wires that go into steel-belted tires used by earth-moving equipment. Technimark LLC manufactures packaging for many household items, from detergent to tools, while Teleflex Medical makes heart catheters for surgery patients.

“And one of our long-standing companies – Klaussner Home Furnishings – has been producing top-line furniture in Randolph County since the 1950s,” Renfro says. “Manufacturing has always been a key component of the economy in this community, and remains so to this day.”

Asheboro’s food scene will leave your taste buds

Take in scenic views of the uwharrie Mountains at Zimmerman’s Winery in Trinity. The winery, which opened in June 2007, is Randolph County’s first commercial winery. Even though the winery has only been around a few years, the land’s history dates from the 1800s, when it was a parcel of land bought in two pieces from John hoover Sr. and Andrew

hoover. From there, the land was passed down and eventually purchased in 1987. Even though the wines are produced off-site, the grapes that make Zimmerman’s reds and whites are grown on-site.

The winery is also a great place to have a picnic or attend a wine tasting. Special events throughout the year include Smoke in the Vineyard, where you can enjoy fine cigars, gourmet food and, of course, wine. And the Annual Birthday Bash celebrates the winery’s success with music and local art from photographers, jewelers and other artisans who showcase their custom pieces that serve as gifts or souvenirs.

Nestled in the country, a few miles west of Asheboro is Silo’s Smokehouse which serves up mouth-watering smoked pork and chicken as well as salads, sandwiches and homecooked breakfast. As the name implies, the restaurant resembles a silo. over at henry James Bar-B-Que on Fayetteville Street, the barbecue does battle on the plate with homemade french fries and hush puppies in amazingly large portions.

Need some fresh veggies for side dishes now that the main course and libations are set? From early April to around halloween, look no further than the Downtown Farmers’ Market. The market now has more than 30 vendors offering fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, preserves, plants, crafts, cakes and much more. There’s always a crowd at the market, especially for Peach Day in July and Watermelon Day in August, as well as Wine Day in September and Pumpkin Day in october.

It’s easy to stay occupied in Asheboro, as the city offers attractions for both activity-seekers and

spectators. From local competitions and sports events to hiking and golf, residents have an array of options to choose from when it comes to enjoying the outdoors.

playtoWininasheBoroheld in the city’s downtown area, this year on

May 5, the Asheboro Criterium is a 0.6-mile-long race that includes four right turns and one hill. The race, which is put on by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, begins and finishes on South Fayetteville Street. Cyclists of all levels are welcome to compete, and a children’s race is also available.

Those interested in golf may want to check out the National golf Association (NgA) hooters Tour, which includes a tournament in Asheboro at Pinewood Country Club. The event, known as the heart of North Carolina golf Classic Pro-Am, lasts one week and includes practice rounds, tournament play and an awards ceremony.

In addition to hosting local competitions, Randolph County is a sweet spot for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. The uwharrie National Forest, which covers more than 50,000 acres in Randolph and neighboring Montgomery and Davidson counties, is just one example of where residents can go to get away from it all. Among its famous features is Badin Lake, with 5,350 acres of

boating and fishing along with adjacent camping areas, 40 miles of trails that end in the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, and trails for off-road vehicles and horses. hunters also visit the uwharrie for deer, turkey and other small game.

A little closer to home, and in more polished surroundings, Asheboro Cultural & Recreation Services is implementing a 20-year master plan that will expand its very popular youth athletic programs, as well as add more parks and adult programming. In addition to its network of parks, swimming pools, tennis courts and picnic facilities, the department also operates a 10,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor skate park and a historic nine-hole golf course. More than 25,000 rounds per year are played here, making the city’s course a stiff rival to nearby Tot hill Farm golf Club and Pinewood Country Club’s fairways.

The North Carolina Zoo is a local treasure that’s also the nation’s third-largest zoo in terms of land area. At 1,458 acres, it’s easy to see why the zoo has a tram system. The state-owned park has plenty of other creature comforts for both residents and visitors, as well. New for 2012 is an exhibit called Dino-Roars, which features 15 lifelike, animatronic dinosaurs. The exhibit will be at the zoo from April to october.

Thanks to the creation of the Central Piedmont

Surgery Center, Randolph County residents will

no longer have to leave the community to receive

surgical services.

The facility, which opened its doors in November

2011, is a free-standing ambulatory surgery center

that was created through a joint venture between

Randolph hospital, Nueterra healthcare and several

local surgeons. It offers two operating suites and will

handle 1,600 to 2,000 surgeries each year. Patients

can receive care for a variety of ailments, as the

facility’s surgeons specialize in areas such as general

surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics,

otolaryngology, podiatry and urology.

Center is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.

until 6 p.m.

Local residents have long turned to Randolph

hospital for their health-care needs, and the hospital

in turn has made sure it has the most current and

sophisticated equipment and facilities. A prime

example is the Randolph Cancer Center, now in

a 21,000-square-foot complex on the hospital’s

grounds, part of an overall 58,000-square-foot

addition that includes the Randolph hospital

outpatient Care Center.

The cancer center offers chemotherapy,

radiation therapy and therapeutic support services

to Randolph County and the surrounding area.

All forms of cancer can be treated, providing a fully

integrated medical campus for both inpatient and
