DC Report C Certificate Nine girls Phoebe Cohalan, Sylvia Whitson, Holly Walker, Meg Green, Maddie Wilson, Maddie Rumler, Tanika Daisley, Natalie Koopman and Hayley Juggins, all attended pony club on Saturday 11th August to sit their C Certificate exam – a theory test, practical and ridden test. Congratulations to the eight girls who passed, with Holly passing the theory and practical sections, but her pony played up on the day during the ridden section so she will re-do her ridden section at one of the pony club rallies. Speed to Safety Time trials Saturday 25th August was the state final of the Speed and Safety event. This was held at Moonee Valley races complete with racing colours, strappers and heats. Ballarat Pony Club qualified 3 of the 14 riders in the State Final. Lucinda Doodt rode Disco in the grade 3/ 4 section and Melissa Doodt rode Dom and Kelsey Mason rode Rumpy in the grade 1/ 2 section. Barwon Zone ran a time trial at the Ballarat Race course about 2 weeks ago and the three riders were selected on the times submitted to state office. Well done girls. International Pony Club Show Jumping and Eventing Competition Melissa Doodt has put in an application into PCAV to attend the International Pony Club Show Jumping and Eventing Competition which will be held in Queensland in July-August 2013. In this competition, riders, one from each state, compete against teams from Japan, England and New Zealand on horses drawn from a “pool”. A pre-requisite to nominate is to hold a PCAV B Certificate, which Melissa completed in February this year. About 7 years ago the Doodt family loaned one of their competition horses to the “pool” when the event was held in Melbourne. Good luck with the application Melissa. Inter-Zone Horse Trials – Grade 3 and 4 – June 2013 Speaking of pre-requisites – potential grade 3 and 4 horse trial riders – remember over the next 6 months to get some qualifying performances up at Barwon Zone Horse Trials so you can qualify to go to the Inter-Zone Horse Trials which will be held in June 2013. You have to plan ahead. You could commence your campaign with an entry in our horse trials on 13/14 October. Briony Deeker Fradd competed at the Inter Zone Horse Trials last June, 2012. When you are talking to her – ask her about the experience. Dressage Squad Jordan Smith is on the Young Riders Dressage Squad. There is also a Young Riders Show Jumping Squad as well. Being a member of the Dressage Squad gives her more exposure to high quality dressage riders and instructors. She was recently selected to try out for the Young Ambassador Awards for Dressage Riders. This process involved submitting a resume, attending and interview and dinner. All character building. Ballarat PC events On Saturday 15th September BPC will be running a novelty show, PC and Open riders are welcome to attend. On Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October BPC will be running their two day horse trials – dressage on the Saturday, cross country on the Sunday and show jumping on both days. This event is always really successfully both financially and for competitors to compete at, but it requires an large work force – many hand make light work. There will be a working bee in September School holidays to get ready for this event The BEDS dressage day which we held in July was very successful with over $4,000 being raised. Thank you everyone who helped at that event Helen Kirkpatrick Ballarat DC

To All riders intending to Ride at PCAV Horse Trials You must wear you Pony Club uniform for Dressage (competition uniform) and on the Cross Country you can wear Silks over you uniform (if you have them) but this must be in BALLARAT PONY CLUB COLOURS. Not pink, purple, green but Navy Blue & White. Not every rider will have silks, so you must be in Ballarat Pony Club competition uniform (Jumper, Tie and White shirt.) OR Club Tee Polo shirts can be worn on Cross country and showjumping if the day is very hot. Competitors always look good in their official Pony Club uniform (Jumper White Shirt & Tie. If you are lucky enough to win a ribbon remember to present in your Pony club uniform – not tracky pants over your jodhpurs, a daggy windcheater and runners. This should be remembered for all competitions that you attend. Hair – All hair is to be tied up – not long pony tails as this obscures you back number. If any officials cannot see both front & back numbers you can be eliminated from the competition. Piercing – If you have ear piercing they must be removed or taped over. Any facial piercing should be also removed or taped. Tongue piercing should be removed – if you fall off you horse – this could cause damage to teeth and tongue or you may swallow it. Uniforms A new order of summer Polo shirts have arrived – these are $35 each.

Jumpers are still being made.

If you wish to purchase a saddleblanket , please purchase a Navy Blue (PLAIN with no white edging)at either saddlery, then take this to Impact Teamwear - new office & showroom at the old HILTON factory on the ring road to have BPC embroidered in the corner on angle, both sides of blanket.

If you wish to purchase a raincoat – then go to Impact Teamwear & purchase one and be embroidered with the BPC logo on (R) of jacket and PCAV logo (L) of jacket

with Ballarat Pony Club on the back.

Vic Park, BPC, Dogs and Horses Just thought, since I had to investigate this, I thought I would share the knowledge!! Ballarat Pony Club Grounds are part of the Victoria Park precinct and belong to Council. The grounds are open to the public at anytime. Dogs are allowed to be anywhere in Victoria Park off the lead ( within certain parameters..none of which pertain to horses or the club)..it is a dog friendly precinct. So, dogs and their owners have a right to be in the BPC grounds. However, it is incumbent on dog owners to ensure their dogs are not being a nuisance and/or causing distress to people/dogs or even horses. A responsible dog owner should understand this and act accordingly. In the interest of maintaining good relationships with the other park users, we need to be understanding in our approach. I realise that if a dog is bothering your horse it can be very stressful, and even dangerous. However, it is important to be as courteous as possible under the circumstances. It may help to take the approach of explaining to the person that you are concerned that the horse could kick and consequently injure or kill the dog, and you would hate to see that happen, would she/he please put it on a leash until out of sight of the horses. Of course if the dog is present without its owner, the ranger can be called as dogs are not allowed to roam. ph 53205500 (put it in your phone!) On rally days and Pony Club Show days we can take the view that the grounds are being used by us, a legitimate user group of Victoria Park, and just as with a game of cricket or football, common courtesy would dictate that an individual (and their dog) does not interfere with that event. This situation is rarely a problem as most people are unaware that the grounds are for public use and that’s quite good really!!

Other items: Dressage tests at the rally I thought it was timely that some rider should have the opportunity to ride either the 5C, 4C or 3C dressage tests. These will be the ones at our Horse Trials in October. So the theory session is mounted for the rider to do 2 dressage tests and be marked by a parent or associate rider. Riders can do the same test twice or 2 different tests. You are therefore really only riding for 2 tests in that hour. When they are not riding the test – there is an opportunity to sit in the car and observe the judge and penciller – this takes the mystery out of the process Parents will call the tests – so there is no pressure to learn the test – but good on you if you do.

September rally – Coloured Jodhpurs for Charity Well done to everyone who wore cream jodhpurs to our August Rally. At the September rally you can wear any coloured jodhpurs, plus your regular pony club shirt and jumper. You pay a gold coin donation and at the Junior Committee Meeting, they will decide who the money will be donated to - a group such as Riding for the Disabled or the RSPCA might be considered. Just put your dollar in the tin as you sign in with your pony club card. This is a similar idea as Jeans for Genes Day – with a horsey twist.

Barwon Zone Associate Rider Days The associate riders in Barwon Zone ( those riders 17 years and over) have the opportunity to meet once a month at a town somewhere in the zone. It is usually for instruction, but sometimes it is a social event like a meal or a night at the movies. The latest Barwon Zone Associate Riders get together was meant to be held on Saturday 18th August at at Smythesdale but was cancelled due to the weather. Lunch is provided and the cost is $55. Contact Greg Potter for details Ph 52334521 of the next associates event Inter Zone Horse Trials for horses graded C and D Briony Deeker Fradd had attended a few Horse Trials in the Barwon Zone and had enough performances to qualify to represent Barwon Zone at the Inter Zone Horse Trials. This event was held at Yarrambat in July. Briony competed in the D grade level and successful completed all three sections of the event. Well done Briony. Those riders who are currently riding grade 3 and 4 Horse Trials – remember to do a few of the Barwon Zone Horse Trials, as these are the events which count towards qualifying for the Inter-Zone Horse Trials which will be held in winter 2013. Log books All the riders in the first four groups have now been given log books. Some riders already had their own, which is great to see. Tammy Kuiler arranged the log books for the Miniature Horse Group and these look great. It is important to save mementos of your pony club days and events you have gone to. Photos in the log book are also good. You can store sheets you have done in theory and keep your Pony Club D or D* book with your Log Book, then everything is organized. Any rider in miniature, Shetland, welsh and palomino group who did not get a log book can get one at the September rally – just see Helen

New Stuff!! Tammy Kuiler managed to get us two portable pin boards – great for theory lessons, messages and events, a tall rack which will be great for display of programs and some chairs.

Ballarat PC Horse Trials – Saturday 13th and Sunday14th October

This event is big. It takes a lot of work to set up the cross country, a show jumping course and 5 dressage rings. There is a fair bit of managing to get about 200 riders slotted into a timetable,

and then organising them during the weekend. The end result is that we hope these riders will enjoy competing at our wonderful facility and

find us efficient and helpful. We also will make a bit of money for the pony club. If you wish to ride – get you entry in early (online) as the May Horse Trials closed before the

due date and Bacchus Marsh PC Horse Trials were a sell out before they were rained out. We also need all families to be available to help. We can generally work job rosters around

your child riding. There will be roster lists up at the September and October rally There will be a working bee during the September school holidays, at a date to be fixed.

Down in the Float Car Park Can you all please make sure that both the gates to the pony club grounds are always shut as you enter and leave. This is at both rallies and during private use. Our public liability is such that we need to show due care by always shutting the gate and hence preventing a horse from running free on the roads or in Victoria Park.

It is also important that a horse is not tied to a float which is not attached to a car. If all the steel yards are full, please put the horse in one of the wooden yards up the top.

Also when your horse is in a yard or tied up in the car park, please make sure they are adequately rugged – we need to keep our athletes warm!

Users of the grounds: Please park in the bottom carpark and ride your horses up the top when training as this prevents the ground at the front of the clubrooms and arenas from getting

damaged.

So….Now I am a member of Ballarat Pony Club…what next!!?? When I first came to Ballarat Pony Club – some ten years ago or so, I had never been to a Pony Club in my life! It was a whole new world – a little daunting, but it seemed a nice place to be with my then seven year old daughter and her new pony. I joined Pony club mostly because my friend Helen (known to you as the DC) dragged me along because “it would be good for Katherine!” I knew enough to be sure she would learn about caring for her pony, gain some riding skills, and that we needed to show up for the first Sunday of every month. It all “just happened” – instructors, jumps set up, arenas, a canteen – all there for our enjoyment! Well, ten years on, Katherine did learn how to care for her pony, and her riding skills did evolve….but oh, so much more came from being part of this club! For a start, Katherine developed some wonderful and lasting friendships that have supported her through the good times and the bad of being a horse rider. But guess what… I also gained some wonderful new friends! They have supported me through the good times and the bad of being the mother of a horse rider!! I look forward to rallies and various show events so that I can catch up with friends, oh and of course, watch my daughters ride! The other thing I learned was that of course, things don’t “just happen”! A HUGE amount of work and money goes into maintaining and constantly improving our club, its facilities and its services to the members – you! And who does the work? The answer ought to be “ALL OF US”, but it isn’t…yet!! This letter is one of reassurance and request. Firstly, I know how awkward it can be for the first year or two as new members to Pony Club. You can’t remember people’s names ( although they often seem to remember yours), you are still struggling with kids who are not yet confident at managing their ponies, or you have little ones at foot, and really, the whole place can seem quite bamboozling! I remember particularly how terrified and awestruck I was at the “big kids” on their huge horses…right next to my little girl on her little (not entirely reliable) pony! Everyone who has been at Pony Club for a few years can completely relate to these feelings – we have ALL been there! What I would like to request of you, our newer families (and also of the longer standing families who have not yet felt part of our club ) is simply this…. At the September rally – introduce yourself to someone new – maybe someone who looks as if they have been around the club a while – someone not in your rally group. To our longer standing members – please make yourselves available and take the initiative to say hello to at least one family you do not know. Everyone should have nametags – they are at the office counter right next to the sign in book – stick one on so that everyone can see it! Now be warned…this is only the first step on a slippery slope!! We want ALL our families to feel confident in being able to help out the club in whatever way you feel comfortable – but of course you have to have a bit of knowledge to do this, and you can gain that knowledge by chatting over a cuppa at the lunch break during the rally. Here are a few conversation starters………..

• “What does she mean…”can I sit on a jump at the Trials?” • “What are Horse Trials?”

Page 12: CONTACTS - Pony Club · 2 DC Report C Certificate Nine girls Phoebe Cohalan, Sylvia Whitson, Holly Walker, Meg Green, Maddie Wilson, Maddie Rumler, Tanika Daisley, Natalie Koopman

12

• Where are the brooms, and the brushes and pans? I can sweep the club house! • “My child is happy to untack at the end of the day-can I help you pack up the jumps or

the games equipment?” • “I don’t know much about horses, but if you give me a rake and tell me what to do, I’ll

do it! • “I love all the trees, can I help mulch or water them??” • “ My wife usually does Pony Club, I don’t know anything about horses – but I can cook a

mean snag!” • I took some nice photos last rally – have you got a website where you would like to post

them? (Answer is yes!) • What does a “penciller” do??? • “I own a whipper snipper and I love to use it…show me where!!!” • Where is the toilet paper supply to refill the loos? Are there gloves and cleaning stuff so

I can do the job properly? • “I want to take my child to a show, but I have never been to one…what do I have to do?” • “Both of us work full time, but I will be happy to give a few hours at a working bee!” • “My child likes to be at Pony club early to warm up…can I help you set up the jumps or

get the games equipment out??” • And of course one of our favourite….”My business is always looking for sponsorship

opportunities…is there some way we can make a small financial contribution!?” • My child is over 15 and would like to join the BPC Facebook site – what is the name of

the group? (I’ll just pre-empt that one and tell you – Ballarat Pony Club!)

Choose one of the above questions, or make up your own …and find someone to ask! Nobody will bite, and who knows, it may be the first step to a new friendship! So, there you have it, ten years on, and I find myself a proud president of a magnificent club full of fantastic families! I have two daughters at the club – Katherine ( currently on exchange) is now one of those big kids on a terrifying big horse ( except Lonnie is gorgeous and we love her to death!) and my ten year old daughter, Georgia who is still developing her skills on her pony, Merlin. Being part of this club is so much more than turning up on Rally Days – like everything – the more you put in, the more you get out – so be brave and take your first step to becoming “more than a member” at the September Rally. BE MORE THAN A MEMBER – START SEPTEMBER!! (Ok – I know its kitch – couldn’t help myself!) Sincerely, Deb Bain President BPC

Speed to Safety Finals Saturday, August 25th

On Saturday, August 25th Barwon Zone had 3 riders qualify to compete in the Speed to Safety finals, held at the Mooney Valley racecourse, Melissa & Lucinda Doodt and Kelsey Mason (all Ballarat Pony Club Members). In order of qualifying we had to attend time trials that were organised at the Dowling Forrest race course about a month prior to the finals. There we had to ride over 1000m a certain time. For Melissa and Kelsey this time was 109 sec (550m per min) and for Lucy it was 120 sec (500m per min). We all had excellent qualifying times that were sent off to Racing Victoria for those times to be arranged and selected with all of the other zones qualifying times.

It was very exciting to arrive at Mooney Valley and see your horses name put on the top of their stall and to be in amongst the other race horses! The day was followed very strict OH&S guidelines, so if our parents did not hold a strappers license, they were not allowed in the stalls with us, which none of our parents did, therefore we were armed with strappers from Moody’s racing stable!! I was super surprised with the way all of not only our horses but all of the other pony club horses reacted to the hustle and bustle of the day, most ( definitely Kelsey’s horse Rumpy,) just went to sleep in the stalls. It was amazing having the experience of riding on the grass track, (which was in perfect condition), and another variation to the even that has not been conducted any other year is that we all set off at the same time in groups of 5 horses (kind of like a race) but we still had to count and variety our times, so not necessarily the horse that crossed the finish line won! In all of the cases it was the last one that crossed had the closest to the correct specified time. We were all given Mooney Valley saddle cloth’s to wear as they all contained timers in them to gain an accurate time, and a set of famous race silks to ride in also, which added to the experience! It was truly a once in a life time experience and was amazing to be a part of! At the end of the day Lucy come 2nd in the ¾ section, Kelsey come 2nd in the ½ section and I, (Melissa) took out the win in the ½ section! As they always say, slow and steady wins the race!!

Kelsey (front) and Melissa (back)

heading down the home straight! Luc and our Number 1, dedicated

strapper for the day , Sal!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: October Newsletter Closing date for the next newsletter is the 25th of September.

Send in your articles and photos…please Everyone loves to hear what pony club members have been up to – whether it is your first topsy show, grade 5 horse trials, preliminary, eventing, a Royal Show, a new horse or competing at a zone or state level. It only takes a few sentences and even better, a picture. The editor can’t be everywhere. Your outing might inspire another member to compete or inform them.
