Back in June a tweet showed up in the @ContactusEaling

timeline. @potterkatiehook had posted a graph clipped from the Sunday Times, headlined “Could these areas be the next big things?” (pictured below). Down at number six, behind York and Cricklewood, was South Ealing. Not Ealing. Specifically South Ealing. After hearing all the comments about “hipsters” and “South Ealing being the new Hoxton”, it was worth checking out. The first thing to notice is that there are a lot of cafés. Not greasy

spoon cafés, but coffee-shop-connoisseur type cafés (with

the accent on the é). Apparently leading the way among these were Munson’s on St Mary’s Road, and Paperback Coffee

and Tea on South Ealing Road. But it is at L’Amandine cafe next door to South Ealing tube station where I find new owner Shamshaid Cheema working hard to keep his customers coming back. “It’s good here because we’re next to the station,” he says. “We’re also next to the park so we get a lot of mums before and after the school run.” Always good for a business to have parents on-side. Especially if they love coffee.

Why would someone say South Ealing is trendy? Do you think it’s trendy?

Tori Johnson (pictured with husband Gareth, they own Kaboodles on St Mary’s Road):

We have such a creative buzz in South Ealing due

to the University of West London, Ealing studios, the music scene etc. I get some quite amazing and interesting people coming in to the shop every week from all over the world.”

Leslie Faux (garden designer, from nearby Northfields):

Munson’s is always packed.

They do the best coffee. And I can come here with my dogs.”

Eddie (long time St Mary’s Road resident):

In the last three years, South

Ealing has just got a lot smarter. The houses here are expensive. Plus we have the development of the high street – proper butchers have moved in, and we’ve got some good greengrocers. They’re independent shops, not chains.”

Lugina McConnell (local entrepreneur):

People are more likely

to turn to local businesses and support them. We’re going back to the high street at last.”

Down in South Ealing, at the eastern end of Popes Lane, there’s a cricket club (men, women and colts). It’s also a football club, rugby club, netball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, squash, and now hockey club too. It’s the Old Actonians Sports Club, the “most ‘multi’ of multi-sports club in Ealing”,

according to club chairman Kevin Mahoney. (The only other Ealing multi-sports club is the Brentham in Pitshanger.) “Come for the cricket and stay for the other sports,” adds Kevin.

Real Italian food“We’re just very Italian

about food,” says Roberta Sabbatini,

the ‘Roberta’ behind the family-run restaurant Casa Roberta at 12 St Mary’s Road, South Ealing. “My brother Mauro and I combine the experience, the knowledge and the passion for food into explosive recipes.” In May, the restaurant was awarded TripAdvisor’s 2014 Certificate of Excellence, which celebrates businesses who consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on the online travel site. As one reviewer, Jukei176, put it: “I am italian and I live since January 2014 in London... I ate in a lot of self-defining ‘Italian Restaurants’ around here, but this is the only one, here in Ealing, in which I have been able to find the real Italian taste!” It’s now even easier to book a table – or two – with Casa Roberta’s online reservation system. Standing by for lunch.

Advice and solutions for security problems

I am telling David McCaffrey about the man who opened his door when someone knocked at 10o’clock in the night.

David starts shaking his head. “Look through the viewfinder and if you don’t know who it is, don’t open the door,” he tells the man in my story. The story doesn’t end well, but David has got another solution for the man’s security problem: a concealed door chain, “which is like a mini bicycle chain fitted into the door and can only be unlocked when the door is fully closed. “It’s stronger than the traditional door chain, and its easy use is perfect for the elderly,” he says. David wants everyone to be safe, and his South Ealing based security services business Belfrey Secure has been proudly securing people’s homes and businesses for the past eight years. Now it’s even easier to book a visit from David, via the newly revamped Belfrey Secure website.

JOY EVERY MINUTEJames de Vivenot (above) tells us about his favourite place to run in Ealing:

There are so many reasons to love running in

Lammas Park – it has nice smooth tree-lined paths, it’s conveniently exactly a mile round and has handy 100m marker posts. Also it’s right at the heart of the local community – I’m bound to see a friendly face along the way.”James adds: “Thanks Ealing Eagles for amazing support since coming through the Beginners Programme in January. Also I’d like to celebrate the work of Kelvin Walker and Sandra Courtney in organising the Ealing Half Marathon for the third year running, which has really put Ealing on the map.”

September: that’s when we really runEaling Running

Q&AEaling resident Alice Gupta

Contributed

Contributed

Runners are everywhere in Ealing, not least because of the Ealing Half Marathon on 28 September. Here we talk to two local racers...

“Q: When did you take up running? In January this year.

Q: Why, did something special happen to inspire you to start running as a sport? In 2012, after all the excitement of London Olympics, I went to see the Ealing Half Marathon and cheered on all the amazing people who took part. I was surprised to see people of all ages and abilities. That truly inspired me and I was convinced I can do the same one day. I like all kinds of outdoor sports – tennis, cycling, skiing but never considered running. I hadn’t taken any action until last autumn when my father died. It made me realise that life is short and I must start the things I set out for myself.

Q: Do you ever feel unsafe?I do feel unsafe and self-conscious when I run on my own so the next step for me was to join a running club – I joined the friendly Ealing Eagles and run regularly with them. Also, on most Saturdays I go to Gunnersbury 5km Park Run.

Q: Have you done any races?I have done two 10k races so far and my personal best is 1:06.

Q: Any advice for new runners?Join a running club! :-)

From Glasgow to Ealing

“Great day... the heat meant I had to catch a couple of athletes crossing the line

but all ok!” – that was W5 Physio’s Greg Bagley reporting from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow back in July, where he led the team of physiotherapists attending the triathlon event. Now he’s returned to Haven Lane, Ealing Broadway, and is gearing up for the big local sporting event, the Ealing Half Marathon on September 28. Whatever new skills that Greg has learned in Glasgow, he will be applying to helping heal hurt runners both before and after the Ealing Half. The W5 Physio five-strong team of physios will be two short on the actual day, as Stewart Ramsay and Patsy Hayden are running the half-marathon themselves (Stewart for the first time!). This is part of the business’s ongoing commitment to supporting charitable causes.

Greg Bagley: new skills in Glasgow

Let’s hear it for Team JBInspired by the successes

of our national Team GB, ‘Team JB’ – that’s JB for John

Bishop, of Colin Bibra Estate Agents – made up of John, his two sons William and Tom, and Colin Bibra lettings manager Sosi Ross, will be taking to the streets of Ealing alongside up to 6000 other runners on 28 September, on behalf of the Neuro Foundation. “I haven’t done this run yet,” says seasoned runner John, referring to the Ealing Half Marathon. “Apparently it’s pretty tough but it’s one of the most popular in the country.” The race has won several awards, including gold at the 2014 Running Awards.

To prepare for the 13.1-mile closed-road hilly course that starts and ends at Lammas Park going through Pitshanger, West Ealing and Hanwell, John has been training twice a week at Bodyline Fitness studios in Ealing Broadway. “I’ll also take in some long runs before the day,” he says, starting from home in Northfields, close to where one Colin Bibra office is located (the other is in The Mall, Ealing Broadway). Team JB will be sporting shirts branded with the Colin

Bibra logo, as well as their chosen charity. “It’s not a very well-known charity,” says John, “but a close friend of mine suffers from neurofibromatosis, and I would like to support him.”

Be well and run wellSukhi Bhogal, a social

welfare solicitor by background and now

a wellness and personal development consultant, has “always been fascinated by the body’s ability to heal itself”. She adds: “I love, love, love learning about new things on growth and self-development.” Her newsletter (subscribe at [email protected]) describes many varied paths to self-improvement. Living in Ealing since 1998, Sukhi is impressed by the diversity of businesses here. For the runners among us, she would like to emphasise ways of balancing body systems, and how to heal quickly. Q: What advice do you have for local runners?

First of all it is really important to stay well hydrated. Second, acid build-up can cause aches and pains, especially after physical exercise which accumulates as lactic acid, so it helps to keep your body’s PH balance more towards alkaline. Also, you have to keep your attention on the goal – mental power and self-belief is vital.

Q: Which of the Nikken products would you suggest? We work with three main power sources: Earth’s magnetic field, the sun’s far infrared energy, and ionisation. The Pimag water system (top right photo) creates alkaline, mineralised water containing antioxidants that help neutralise the free radicals. The insoles (KenkoStrides), sport socks and support wraps

work on your energy throughout your body. They are particularly effective with helping the stamina, hamstrings, sore legs and calves. They help with recovery time when you usually feel stiff and sore after exercise. They also provide ventilation, temperature control and superior shock absorption. The wraps help soothe, relax and restore tired and overworked muscles and tendons, promoting improved recovery processes. www.nikkenwellbeing.co.uk/

If you have ever thought about joining a running club but never quite got around to it, here are 5 reasons why you should join ours:

1. You are trained by a specialist running coach. The Bodyline Fitness Running Club is taken by Ben Mcillroy and Claire Desroches, who are both extremely experienced running coaches and, in Ben’s case, an ex international athlete.2. The clue is in the name; you run in a group! People tend to train a little bit harder within a group session and you get to enjoy the camaraderie that goes along with it as well. 3. You will be challenged a little bit more than you might challenge yourself. The running coach will be give you specific running drills that you may not have tried before. 4. All levels of fitness are catered for. Running groups will take beginners, intermediate or advanced runners, and all can improve. 5. You will get fitter and better at running. It really is as simple as that! If you attend regularly, then you will get results. – Roy Summers

has been a member of the Ealing Chamber of

Commerce for a number of years, but it is in the last year as chair that she feels more committed than ever to “helping businesses to connect”. Offering business networking opportunities to local companies is one of the main aims of this Ealing branch of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, explains Rosemarie. “The networking events are great, they are absolutely invaluable; you are always meeting different people which opens up a whole host of business opportunities.” Her own business, Rosemark

International Education, is also strongly service-centred – as an organisation they help young people prepare for university and/or the world of work in the same way that Ealing Chamber of Commerce helps its members: “with a lot of support and advice.” What’s especially exciting for Rosemarie as chair is being at the centre of business affairs in Ealing and seeing how businesses, people and opportunities “fit” together –

for example Ealing Council, Ealing Broadway BID, traders associations, and neighbourhood forums. “At our Chamber committee meetings we invite different groups to come and talk about how and what they are doing and how we can support them or, in some instances, work together, and then we share that information with our members,” she explains.

IT support withoutthe ‘geek-speak’Yaro Kowalcyzk likes to talk

straight. “No gimmicks,” he insists. “And no

geek-speak.” That’s how he runs his business, CompControl, providing IT support for small and medium sized businesses. “We always use non-tech language so the customer knows what we are doing,” he explains. A visit to the office in Northumberland House, Pope’s Lane, South Ealing, proves his point. (This is where his five-strong team of dedicated engineers – and his wife, Teresa, who manages the office – call “base”.) He takes his time to explain why building a computer from scratch is so satisfying. “This way, you know the computer inside-out,” he says, “and can better understand if something goes wrong.”

Yaro moved to Britain from Poland in the early 2000s to work for blue-chip companies BT and Homechoice, and by 2008 had set up his own business helping other businesses solve their PC problems – from laptop repair to data recovery; from network installation to virus protection. In November 2012 CompControl became a limited company. His vision for CompControl is based on service and support: “We always give customers a guarantee – always. “I am not scared of giving that guarantee because we are confident of the quality of the service we provide. And that helps the customer feel secure,” he adds.

LOVE EVERY MINUTEJames de Vivenot (above) tells us about his favourite place to run in Ealing:

There are so many reasons to love running in Lammas Park – it has nice smooth tree-lined paths, it’s conveniently exactly a mile round and has handy 100m marker posts. Also it’s

right at the heart of the local community – I’m bound to see a friendly

face along the way.”James adds: “Thanks Ealing Eagles for amazing support since coming through the Beginners Programme in January. Also I’d like to celebrate the work of Kelvin Walker and Sandra Courtney in organising the Ealing Half Marathon for the third year running, which has really put Ealing on the map.”Ealing Running clubs:• Ealing Eagles Running Club

September: that’s when we really runEaling Running Q&A

Ealing resident Alice Gupta

Runners are everywhere in Ealing, not least

because of the Ealing Half Marathon on 28

September. Here we talk to two local racers...

“Q: When did you take up running? In January this year.Q: Why, did something special

happen to inspire you to start running as a sport? In 2012, after all the excitement

of London Olympics, I went to see the Ealing Half Marathon and cheered on all the amazing people who took part. Q: Do you ever feel unsafe?

I do feel unsafe and self-conscious when I run on my own so the next step for me was to join a running club – I joined the friendly Ealing Eagles and run regularly with them. Also, on most Saturdays I go to Gunnersbury 5km Park Run.Q: Have you done any races?

I have done two 10k races so far and my personal best is 1:06.Q: Any advice for new runners?

Join a running club! :-)
