Contemporary Kandy It is the s econd-large st city of the island and the capital of Central Province of modern Sri Lanka. Its geograph ic location has made it a major transportation hub in the island: hile !andy being the gateay to the Central "ighlands #$%  of Sri Lanka& the city can be reached by major motorays in every direction of the island. 'he railay line from Colombo& the sea port on the estern coast runs via !andy to the farthest point of (adulla #)%  in the Central "ighlands. 'he main roads Colombo-!andy and !andy-*uara +liya #,%  are to of the most scenic roads of Sri Lanka Colombo-!an dy #%  road passes through rubber plantations and rice paddies& !andy-*uara +liya road cuts through paddy fields and seamless tea plantations. (oth roads cla their ay up inding& rounding over the rings of hills. Currently feasibility studies are afoot for another highay beteen Colombo and !andy via !adaata and the scenic city of !atugastota. high elevation& the city has a relatively etter and cooler temperatures than that of the tropical climate of therest of the country& especially

the coastal regions. *uara +liya is south to it and has a cooler climate due to its higher elevation. 'he city has its dry season from

;ecember through to 8pril.#<% =rom /ay through to >uly and ;ecember to >anuary the region e?periences its monsoon season& during this

time the eather is rough and unstable. 'he island being in the northern hemisphere gives !andy it coldest month in >anuary and its

hottest in >uly. =rom /arch through the middle of /ay is the intermonsoonal period& during this time there is light rain and strong humidity.
