My response to Cyberpunk 2077s release this week is complex This is methinking out loud very much in progress That cover is Cyberpunk 1st edition my entry point to tabletop RPGs Agedthirteen at a school that somehow had an RPG competition (with prizes)Cyberpunk was the rst game I bought for myself Written by Mike
Pondsmith released by RTalsorian Games A whirlwind combination ofthose William Gibson books I didnt quite understand and the anime I tapedfrom Channel 4 and was denitely not old enough to watch Set in NightCity Cyberpunk is a game about whats happening up the street from BladeRunner and across town from Cyber City Oedo 808 The world is run bycorporations life is cheap your next upgrade isnt and the internet is amuch prettier place to be but probably still has Reddit Welcome to thedark future make sure you do not look at the explosion you just caused This wasnt just my start with TTRPGs but the start of a franchise which thisweek morphed at wildly varying frame rates into Cyberpunk 2077 The lastof the AAA titles for the old consoles The rst for the new A deep dive intodystopian darkness where only the coolest survive and look cool doing coolthings near Keanu Reeeeeeeeeves That was the goal But not the plan The plan was the problem
This was the initial announcement trailer released SEVEN years agoTheres the rst part of the problem The second is oddly less obvious ifyou know the game world I remember watching this trailer and ticking othe elements in my head
Night City PD called to a violent incidentA case of cyber-psychosis (overt replacement of esh with metaldriving a subject mentally unstable)Roll out the powered armor ladsKnife lady there is about to have a sudden percussive job change
Theres a lot to enjoy in this little mini-movie and the way it lays out therules of the world Theres also the cheerful sexism of knife lady being notexactly dressed the fetishization of her form through its mutilation and thejackboot to the wallet of Congratulations we can kill you or youre a copnow All of which at distance ltered through a questioning lens and a controlleris FUN as HELL Seriously the last Cyberpunk campaign I ran was basicallythis concept with fewer guns and more clothes and the players still talkabout it But then theres the subtle knife The one the game didnt even know it wascutting itself with

Yes his face has yet to render in Yes you are like two feet away Yes it isSTILL somehow 2020 As Dillon in the Details (and this still) show there arecolossal wait times for textures and animations seemingly at random Thisis not good for any game For a bleeding edge game about the bleedingedge Its borderline unforgivable Especially after multiple delays and themonths spent in crunch
Coming to the Crunch
Crunch is feral overtime studio employees working six or seven day weeksto ship a game Its a horric work practice and one thats everywhere ingame development Heres an excellent Japanese Times piece on it
CD Project Red (CPDR) the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 pledged thatcrunch would not be necessary It then became necessary To his creditthis quote given to Kotaku from studio head Adam Badowski at least makesthe right noises I take it upon myself to receive the full backlash for the decision I know this is indirect opposition to what wersquove said about crunch Itrsquos also in direct opposition
to what I personally grew to believe a while back mdash that crunch should never bethe answer But wersquove extended all other possible means of navigating the
situation
This is normally the point where people start pointing out that otherprofessions keep unpleasant hours and you dont get to sit around makingvideo games To quote a favorite comedian we dont have time to unpackall that By and large thats accurate As is the fact that those people usuallyget overtime While CDPR do pay their developers overtime the dierencebetween what theyve been saying publicly and whats been reportedprivately is vast If you believe the sources crunch has been a part ofCyberpunk 2077s teams lives for a year A trailhead of ended relationshipsbroken families and hospitalizations that these practices so often lead Remember this game has been in development for at lease SEVEN YEARSAnd yet a possible year of crunch has led to a release riddled with bugs andproblems All of this will of course be laid at the developers feet but this isa cultural issue And one multiple AAA title developers just dont seem towant to face Crunch is ght club The rst rule is you dont talk about itThe second rule is you all do it and you do it not to beat the system but tohold it up To create a consumer artefact One called Cyberpunk 2077 And speaking of irony On September 30th Adam Badowski tweeted that

Supercially this is admirable the kind of move that aims to redistributesome of the massive rewards these titles generate for the top of theirpyramids (Hello to Disney for the exact reasons they think) So in theorythis looks great Until you see the word prot and you realize this is just another vice to putthese poor folks in Because the better the reviews the more it will sell and
if it sells well enough then Dobby will be a free elf If it doesnt thecompany doesnt make money the health and life shattering crunch willhave been for nothing no bonus and presumably Someones getting theirhands ironed This also puts the fact several sources have the team votingfor crunch in context Because when it comes down to it what would youvote for The chance at a bonus or no chance at all Remember work hard Make money More than if you worked sensiblyBecause that way nothing has to change aside from the meat in themachine The meat thats you That right now is taking heat for a AAAgame looking like this on release So lets review So far we have a game about scrappy desperate street-level techno urchins ghting to be able to aord to live and breathe Thevideo game sequel to which is being put together by an organization thatfought a losing war against one of the two cultures killing its industry andthen used the promise of prot share to drive its exhausted sta still fastertowards Castle Capitalism Bad yes Oh but were just getting warmed up
The Other(ing) Problem The absolute kindest thing you can say about how the game has beenpromoted over the last seven years is that its been edgy Theyve jokedwith one of Texas newest richest loudest pandemic-deniers Theyveunleashed a legion of trans jokes and micro aggressions that would makeTexas other newest richest loudest pandemic denying transphoberesident applaud Theyve had a high old time and delivered the exact sortof not-quite apology that Twitter loves almost as much as updates thatmean its cosplaying as Instagram There are so many things that are maddening about this behaviour butlets look at two Firstly it seems to have worked Secondly cyberpunk is agenre that works best when it embraces the subversive the pushing ofboundaries Those boundaries have shifted vast distances from the TTRPGsconvention heck even in the mere seven years since the gamesannouncement But youd be forgiven for thinking no one involved hasnoticed The best example of this is the games attitude towards trans charactersand players The game pays lip service to gender expression and
exploration running a gauntlet from the commonplace (hair styles limitedto certain genders) to the ridiculous This article goes into detail both aboutwhat the trans and non-gender conrming character options are and whatthey could have or should have been More importantly it discusses the messages such design choices sendsabout inclusivity Or far too often the lack of it I believe CDPR want transplayers in their community I also believe they arent ready to hear them ordefend them when the other elements theyve courted so assiduouslycome for them For example in 40 hours of playing one correspondentreported that they encountered exactly one queer-coded character whowas of course a villain Because in the dark future the most punk thing to be is -- somehow yetagain -- a cis straight white man Entirely justiably a lot of people are notokay with that AT all
Goodnight City As of my writing this the game has released Well released here meaningavailable for patching on an overwhelmed Steam platform near youriddled with bugs Itll make its money and no doubt spawn a dozen otheredgelord marketing campaigns that will titillate themselves by seeing howclose to the line they can get Thats a problem for the industry now Add it to the pile Dont hold yourbreath I know people who are playing it and having a blast and honestly Imdelighted for them Games are GREAT especially in this blasted hellscape ofa year But I wont be joining them Because the cyberpunk I love is a game aboutpeople -- wildly diverse deeply weird sometimes barely functional people --ghting back against a system rigged for them to lose The streets of NightCity arent full of self consciously straight pretty folks with malfunctioningtrousers to me Theyre a glorious explosion of weird Pride Weekhappening inside Mardi Gras inside GenCon inside Akira inside JohnnyMnemonic I dont see that here Not now Not yet Not without even morework by the victims of marginalisation ghting for the bare minimumbeing seen being present

penultimate moments Terminally ill teenager Milla (Eliza Scanlen) and hermother Anna (Essie Davis) are playing music at Millas birthday party Thetwo have been at loggerheads for the entire movie but here at last theirrelationship transposed into time and meter theyre in harmony Until afriend has to leave because her water has broken Life is untidy and messy and odd and at times brutal and funny Nonarrative is tidy nothing is certain beyond the things you wish for and thethings you wish against This story which echoes earlier excellentAustralian dramas Lantana and Little Fish in style and approach neverforgets that
Milla played with ery intensity by Eliza Scanlen is dying Her parents Annaand Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) are barely keeping it together Anna is onmore drugs than her daughter Henry is irting with a neighbour anddreaming of what will happen when this isnt their lives anymore at least asmuch as he is dreading it They exist in that stretched distended summer atthe end of adolescence and the end of life A familial scream held in Amoment both transient and desperately ercely xated upon Theyre not remotely okay They know it Thats all they have And then theres Moses Toby Wallaces gloriously broken and deantfailson gets a brilliant entrance that slides from near suicide to toweringrat-haired Olympian to deeply terried stranger in under three minutesHes charming plausible never once trustworthy and never knows how togo away Wallace is gangly awkward charming furious and terried Heswounded from the start covering it up doing a bad job and knowing itHes a mercurial element in the familys pre-calcied grief Milla adopts himas much as he does her Two half-lives making a dierent whole in which
all four roll along often merrily sometimes even in the same direction Hyperbolic as the subject matter could so easily have been Rita Kalnejaisadapts her own play with wit and gentleness and in a manner that puts theoriginal text last This is a fearsome cast four dynamos powering along inthe same unity their characters arent She and debut feature directorShannon Murphy do an exemplary job of clearing the ground for the castfolding in visual witticisms at every turn Mendelsohn gets to do a littlescrewball comedy Scanlens laser-like stare powers scenes along andWallaces permanent motion and carefully orchestrated sincerity is funnyand horrifying in equal measure Davis is the secret breakout thoughutterly convincing as she careens from emotion to emotion Awake at thewheel but unable to steer Babyteeth isnt a movie about something horrible happening Its aboutwhether its okay to be bored waiting for it to arrive It is Because in thislong all too nite summer of nal adolescence what these charactersdiscover in the heat haze and mist isnt serenity but reassurance Millasdeath is not a full stop at the end of a book Its at the end of a paragraphAnd the magic of the lm is in how that makes it both something to bemourned and celebrated Babyteeth is available this week and its going to be a hard watch for somebut a rewarding oddly reassuring watch for many others

Echo Sector Editors note GUITARS Oh but I love surf rock Give me surf astrorock And I am a very very happyboy INDEED Echo Sector is surf rock the same way Dan Dare is a hymn to the RAF to thecore and with a twinkle in its eye Thats rarely truer than on the trackSandwom Strut where keyboard player and author Spencer Ellsworthdrives the band into a tight funky near-disco frenzy which then turns into aSpector-esque wall of noise I will absolutely be hearing where andwhenever I see worm sign next summer Space with a hint of back alley carchase There isnt a bad track on this album song after song which wouldnt feelout of place playing on the Dark Stars ightdeck on their way to SantaMonica I especially liked Quasar Quagmire with its carefully plotted orbits
of ris and refrains Like contemporaries Daikaiju they mix science ctionand surf riding the waves of each with equal skill Capt Dan Steely is the standout for me though Starting with a franticprecise nod to Dick Dale its the sort of crashing soaring piece of musicyoud expect to play over the opening credits of a TV show where peoplejump away from slow motion explosions -- Captain Steely Space Patrol --and Id own every episode The album sprints through its run time but never checks its watch and eachtrack feels broad expansive and composed Album closer MidwestDestroyer is equal parts mad science car chase and beach party Which aswe all know is the best kind The album also includes three ash pieces from Spencer Ellsworth and theyalone would absolutely be worth the price of admission The Titans is thenal stage of a voyage that is not as advertised but perhaps deserves to beCattle Drive is a Martian cowboy noir and Night Sighs Well thats the bestsurng story Ive ever read Especially set on Jupiter Wide expansive music full of the joy and knowledge of complexity Theseare stories machine-tooled by an expert author into haunting beautifulbarbs of the future From 12th Planet by Echo Sector is available now Find more of Spencersbooks here and Spencer here
Other Cities Other Punks Transistor The premise of Transistor is more inherently cyberpunk than anything Ive seenfrom Cyberpunk 2077 Its also deeply sweet remarkably clever and subtle andhas an amazing soundtrack Youd expect nothing less from the studio thatbrought us Hades

Echo Sector Editors note GUITARS Oh but I love surf rock Give me surf astrorock And I am a very very happyboy INDEED Echo Sector is surf rock the same way Dan Dare is a hymn to the RAF to thecore and with a twinkle in its eye Thats rarely truer than on the trackSandwom Strut where keyboard player and author Spencer Ellsworthdrives the band into a tight funky near-disco frenzy which then turns into aSpector-esque wall of noise I will absolutely be hearing where andwhenever I see worm sign next summer Space with a hint of back alley carchase There isnt a bad track on this album song after song which wouldnt feelout of place playing on the Dark Stars ightdeck on their way to SantaMonica I especially liked Quasar Quagmire with its carefully plotted orbits

Pondsmith released by RTalsorian Games A whirlwind combination ofthose William Gibson books I didnt quite understand and the anime I tapedfrom Channel 4 and was denitely not old enough to watch Set in NightCity Cyberpunk is a game about whats happening up the street from BladeRunner and across town from Cyber City Oedo 808 The world is run bycorporations life is cheap your next upgrade isnt and the internet is amuch prettier place to be but probably still has Reddit Welcome to thedark future make sure you do not look at the explosion you just caused This wasnt just my start with TTRPGs but the start of a franchise which thisweek morphed at wildly varying frame rates into Cyberpunk 2077 The lastof the AAA titles for the old consoles The rst for the new A deep dive intodystopian darkness where only the coolest survive and look cool doing coolthings near Keanu Reeeeeeeeeves That was the goal But not the plan The plan was the problem
This was the initial announcement trailer released SEVEN years agoTheres the rst part of the problem The second is oddly less obvious ifyou know the game world I remember watching this trailer and ticking othe elements in my head

Theres a lot to enjoy in this little mini-movie and the way it lays out therules of the world Theres also the cheerful sexism of knife lady being notexactly dressed the fetishization of her form through its mutilation and thejackboot to the wallet of Congratulations we can kill you or youre a copnow All of which at distance ltered through a questioning lens and a controlleris FUN as HELL Seriously the last Cyberpunk campaign I ran was basicallythis concept with fewer guns and more clothes and the players still talkabout it But then theres the subtle knife The one the game didnt even know it wascutting itself with

Yes his face has yet to render in Yes you are like two feet away Yes it isSTILL somehow 2020 As Dillon in the Details (and this still) show there arecolossal wait times for textures and animations seemingly at random Thisis not good for any game For a bleeding edge game about the bleedingedge Its borderline unforgivable Especially after multiple delays and themonths spent in crunch

Crunch is feral overtime studio employees working six or seven day weeksto ship a game Its a horric work practice and one thats everywhere ingame development Heres an excellent Japanese Times piece on it
CD Project Red (CPDR) the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 pledged thatcrunch would not be necessary It then became necessary To his creditthis quote given to Kotaku from studio head Adam Badowski at least makesthe right noises I take it upon myself to receive the full backlash for the decision I know this is indirect opposition to what wersquove said about crunch Itrsquos also in direct opposition
to what I personally grew to believe a while back mdash that crunch should never bethe answer But wersquove extended all other possible means of navigating the

Yes his face has yet to render in Yes you are like two feet away Yes it isSTILL somehow 2020 As Dillon in the Details (and this still) show there arecolossal wait times for textures and animations seemingly at random Thisis not good for any game For a bleeding edge game about the bleedingedge Its borderline unforgivable Especially after multiple delays and themonths spent in crunch
Coming to the Crunch
Crunch is feral overtime studio employees working six or seven day weeksto ship a game Its a horric work practice and one thats everywhere ingame development Heres an excellent Japanese Times piece on it
CD Project Red (CPDR) the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 pledged thatcrunch would not be necessary It then became necessary To his creditthis quote given to Kotaku from studio head Adam Badowski at least makesthe right noises I take it upon myself to receive the full backlash for the decision I know this is indirect opposition to what wersquove said about crunch Itrsquos also in direct opposition
to what I personally grew to believe a while back mdash that crunch should never bethe answer But wersquove extended all other possible means of navigating the
situation
This is normally the point where people start pointing out that otherprofessions keep unpleasant hours and you dont get to sit around makingvideo games To quote a favorite comedian we dont have time to unpackall that By and large thats accurate As is the fact that those people usuallyget overtime While CDPR do pay their developers overtime the dierencebetween what theyve been saying publicly and whats been reportedprivately is vast If you believe the sources crunch has been a part ofCyberpunk 2077s teams lives for a year A trailhead of ended relationshipsbroken families and hospitalizations that these practices so often lead Remember this game has been in development for at lease SEVEN YEARSAnd yet a possible year of crunch has led to a release riddled with bugs andproblems All of this will of course be laid at the developers feet but this isa cultural issue And one multiple AAA title developers just dont seem towant to face Crunch is ght club The rst rule is you dont talk about itThe second rule is you all do it and you do it not to beat the system but tohold it up To create a consumer artefact One called Cyberpunk 2077 And speaking of irony On September 30th Adam Badowski tweeted that

Supercially this is admirable the kind of move that aims to redistributesome of the massive rewards these titles generate for the top of theirpyramids (Hello to Disney for the exact reasons they think) So in theorythis looks great Until you see the word prot and you realize this is just another vice to putthese poor folks in Because the better the reviews the more it will sell and
if it sells well enough then Dobby will be a free elf If it doesnt thecompany doesnt make money the health and life shattering crunch willhave been for nothing no bonus and presumably Someones getting theirhands ironed This also puts the fact several sources have the team votingfor crunch in context Because when it comes down to it what would youvote for The chance at a bonus or no chance at all Remember work hard Make money More than if you worked sensiblyBecause that way nothing has to change aside from the meat in themachine The meat thats you That right now is taking heat for a AAAgame looking like this on release So lets review So far we have a game about scrappy desperate street-level techno urchins ghting to be able to aord to live and breathe Thevideo game sequel to which is being put together by an organization thatfought a losing war against one of the two cultures killing its industry andthen used the promise of prot share to drive its exhausted sta still fastertowards Castle Capitalism Bad yes Oh but were just getting warmed up
The Other(ing) Problem The absolute kindest thing you can say about how the game has beenpromoted over the last seven years is that its been edgy Theyve jokedwith one of Texas newest richest loudest pandemic-deniers Theyveunleashed a legion of trans jokes and micro aggressions that would makeTexas other newest richest loudest pandemic denying transphoberesident applaud Theyve had a high old time and delivered the exact sortof not-quite apology that Twitter loves almost as much as updates thatmean its cosplaying as Instagram There are so many things that are maddening about this behaviour butlets look at two Firstly it seems to have worked Secondly cyberpunk is agenre that works best when it embraces the subversive the pushing ofboundaries Those boundaries have shifted vast distances from the TTRPGsconvention heck even in the mere seven years since the gamesannouncement But youd be forgiven for thinking no one involved hasnoticed The best example of this is the games attitude towards trans charactersand players The game pays lip service to gender expression and
exploration running a gauntlet from the commonplace (hair styles limitedto certain genders) to the ridiculous This article goes into detail both aboutwhat the trans and non-gender conrming character options are and whatthey could have or should have been More importantly it discusses the messages such design choices sendsabout inclusivity Or far too often the lack of it I believe CDPR want transplayers in their community I also believe they arent ready to hear them ordefend them when the other elements theyve courted so assiduouslycome for them For example in 40 hours of playing one correspondentreported that they encountered exactly one queer-coded character whowas of course a villain Because in the dark future the most punk thing to be is -- somehow yetagain -- a cis straight white man Entirely justiably a lot of people are notokay with that AT all
Goodnight City As of my writing this the game has released Well released here meaningavailable for patching on an overwhelmed Steam platform near youriddled with bugs Itll make its money and no doubt spawn a dozen otheredgelord marketing campaigns that will titillate themselves by seeing howclose to the line they can get Thats a problem for the industry now Add it to the pile Dont hold yourbreath I know people who are playing it and having a blast and honestly Imdelighted for them Games are GREAT especially in this blasted hellscape ofa year But I wont be joining them Because the cyberpunk I love is a game aboutpeople -- wildly diverse deeply weird sometimes barely functional people --ghting back against a system rigged for them to lose The streets of NightCity arent full of self consciously straight pretty folks with malfunctioningtrousers to me Theyre a glorious explosion of weird Pride Weekhappening inside Mardi Gras inside GenCon inside Akira inside JohnnyMnemonic I dont see that here Not now Not yet Not without even morework by the victims of marginalisation ghting for the bare minimumbeing seen being present

to what I personally grew to believe a while back mdash that crunch should never bethe answer But wersquove extended all other possible means of navigating the

This is normally the point where people start pointing out that otherprofessions keep unpleasant hours and you dont get to sit around makingvideo games To quote a favorite comedian we dont have time to unpackall that By and large thats accurate As is the fact that those people usuallyget overtime While CDPR do pay their developers overtime the dierencebetween what theyve been saying publicly and whats been reportedprivately is vast If you believe the sources crunch has been a part ofCyberpunk 2077s teams lives for a year A trailhead of ended relationshipsbroken families and hospitalizations that these practices so often lead Remember this game has been in development for at lease SEVEN YEARSAnd yet a possible year of crunch has led to a release riddled with bugs andproblems All of this will of course be laid at the developers feet but this isa cultural issue And one multiple AAA title developers just dont seem towant to face Crunch is ght club The rst rule is you dont talk about itThe second rule is you all do it and you do it not to beat the system but tohold it up To create a consumer artefact One called Cyberpunk 2077 And speaking of irony On September 30th Adam Badowski tweeted that

The Other(ing) Problem The absolute kindest thing you can say about how the game has beenpromoted over the last seven years is that its been edgy Theyve jokedwith one of Texas newest richest loudest pandemic-deniers Theyveunleashed a legion of trans jokes and micro aggressions that would makeTexas other newest richest loudest pandemic denying transphoberesident applaud Theyve had a high old time and delivered the exact sortof not-quite apology that Twitter loves almost as much as updates thatmean its cosplaying as Instagram There are so many things that are maddening about this behaviour butlets look at two Firstly it seems to have worked Secondly cyberpunk is agenre that works best when it embraces the subversive the pushing ofboundaries Those boundaries have shifted vast distances from the TTRPGsconvention heck even in the mere seven years since the gamesannouncement But youd be forgiven for thinking no one involved hasnoticed The best example of this is the games attitude towards trans charactersand players The game pays lip service to gender expression and
exploration running a gauntlet from the commonplace (hair styles limitedto certain genders) to the ridiculous This article goes into detail both aboutwhat the trans and non-gender conrming character options are and whatthey could have or should have been More importantly it discusses the messages such design choices sendsabout inclusivity Or far too often the lack of it I believe CDPR want transplayers in their community I also believe they arent ready to hear them ordefend them when the other elements theyve courted so assiduouslycome for them For example in 40 hours of playing one correspondentreported that they encountered exactly one queer-coded character whowas of course a villain Because in the dark future the most punk thing to be is -- somehow yetagain -- a cis straight white man Entirely justiably a lot of people are notokay with that AT all
Goodnight City As of my writing this the game has released Well released here meaningavailable for patching on an overwhelmed Steam platform near youriddled with bugs Itll make its money and no doubt spawn a dozen otheredgelord marketing campaigns that will titillate themselves by seeing howclose to the line they can get Thats a problem for the industry now Add it to the pile Dont hold yourbreath I know people who are playing it and having a blast and honestly Imdelighted for them Games are GREAT especially in this blasted hellscape ofa year But I wont be joining them Because the cyberpunk I love is a game aboutpeople -- wildly diverse deeply weird sometimes barely functional people --ghting back against a system rigged for them to lose The streets of NightCity arent full of self consciously straight pretty folks with malfunctioningtrousers to me Theyre a glorious explosion of weird Pride Weekhappening inside Mardi Gras inside GenCon inside Akira inside JohnnyMnemonic I dont see that here Not now Not yet Not without even morework by the victims of marginalisation ghting for the bare minimumbeing seen being present

penultimate moments Terminally ill teenager Milla (Eliza Scanlen) and hermother Anna (Essie Davis) are playing music at Millas birthday party Thetwo have been at loggerheads for the entire movie but here at last theirrelationship transposed into time and meter theyre in harmony Until afriend has to leave because her water has broken Life is untidy and messy and odd and at times brutal and funny Nonarrative is tidy nothing is certain beyond the things you wish for and thethings you wish against This story which echoes earlier excellentAustralian dramas Lantana and Little Fish in style and approach neverforgets that
Milla played with ery intensity by Eliza Scanlen is dying Her parents Annaand Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) are barely keeping it together Anna is onmore drugs than her daughter Henry is irting with a neighbour anddreaming of what will happen when this isnt their lives anymore at least asmuch as he is dreading it They exist in that stretched distended summer atthe end of adolescence and the end of life A familial scream held in Amoment both transient and desperately ercely xated upon Theyre not remotely okay They know it Thats all they have And then theres Moses Toby Wallaces gloriously broken and deantfailson gets a brilliant entrance that slides from near suicide to toweringrat-haired Olympian to deeply terried stranger in under three minutesHes charming plausible never once trustworthy and never knows how togo away Wallace is gangly awkward charming furious and terried Heswounded from the start covering it up doing a bad job and knowing itHes a mercurial element in the familys pre-calcied grief Milla adopts himas much as he does her Two half-lives making a dierent whole in which
all four roll along often merrily sometimes even in the same direction Hyperbolic as the subject matter could so easily have been Rita Kalnejaisadapts her own play with wit and gentleness and in a manner that puts theoriginal text last This is a fearsome cast four dynamos powering along inthe same unity their characters arent She and debut feature directorShannon Murphy do an exemplary job of clearing the ground for the castfolding in visual witticisms at every turn Mendelsohn gets to do a littlescrewball comedy Scanlens laser-like stare powers scenes along andWallaces permanent motion and carefully orchestrated sincerity is funnyand horrifying in equal measure Davis is the secret breakout thoughutterly convincing as she careens from emotion to emotion Awake at thewheel but unable to steer Babyteeth isnt a movie about something horrible happening Its aboutwhether its okay to be bored waiting for it to arrive It is Because in thislong all too nite summer of nal adolescence what these charactersdiscover in the heat haze and mist isnt serenity but reassurance Millasdeath is not a full stop at the end of a book Its at the end of a paragraphAnd the magic of the lm is in how that makes it both something to bemourned and celebrated Babyteeth is available this week and its going to be a hard watch for somebut a rewarding oddly reassuring watch for many others

Echo Sector Editors note GUITARS Oh but I love surf rock Give me surf astrorock And I am a very very happyboy INDEED Echo Sector is surf rock the same way Dan Dare is a hymn to the RAF to thecore and with a twinkle in its eye Thats rarely truer than on the trackSandwom Strut where keyboard player and author Spencer Ellsworthdrives the band into a tight funky near-disco frenzy which then turns into aSpector-esque wall of noise I will absolutely be hearing where andwhenever I see worm sign next summer Space with a hint of back alley carchase There isnt a bad track on this album song after song which wouldnt feelout of place playing on the Dark Stars ightdeck on their way to SantaMonica I especially liked Quasar Quagmire with its carefully plotted orbits
of ris and refrains Like contemporaries Daikaiju they mix science ctionand surf riding the waves of each with equal skill Capt Dan Steely is the standout for me though Starting with a franticprecise nod to Dick Dale its the sort of crashing soaring piece of musicyoud expect to play over the opening credits of a TV show where peoplejump away from slow motion explosions -- Captain Steely Space Patrol --and Id own every episode The album sprints through its run time but never checks its watch and eachtrack feels broad expansive and composed Album closer MidwestDestroyer is equal parts mad science car chase and beach party Which aswe all know is the best kind The album also includes three ash pieces from Spencer Ellsworth and theyalone would absolutely be worth the price of admission The Titans is thenal stage of a voyage that is not as advertised but perhaps deserves to beCattle Drive is a Martian cowboy noir and Night Sighs Well thats the bestsurng story Ive ever read Especially set on Jupiter Wide expansive music full of the joy and knowledge of complexity Theseare stories machine-tooled by an expert author into haunting beautifulbarbs of the future From 12th Planet by Echo Sector is available now Find more of Spencersbooks here and Spencer here

Echo Sector Editors note GUITARS Oh but I love surf rock Give me surf astrorock And I am a very very happyboy INDEED Echo Sector is surf rock the same way Dan Dare is a hymn to the RAF to thecore and with a twinkle in its eye Thats rarely truer than on the trackSandwom Strut where keyboard player and author Spencer Ellsworthdrives the band into a tight funky near-disco frenzy which then turns into aSpector-esque wall of noise I will absolutely be hearing where andwhenever I see worm sign next summer Space with a hint of back alley carchase There isnt a bad track on this album song after song which wouldnt feelout of place playing on the Dark Stars ightdeck on their way to SantaMonica I especially liked Quasar Quagmire with its carefully plotted orbits

Milla played with ery intensity by Eliza Scanlen is dying Her parents Annaand Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) are barely keeping it together Anna is onmore drugs than her daughter Henry is irting with a neighbour anddreaming of what will happen when this isnt their lives anymore at least asmuch as he is dreading it They exist in that stretched distended summer atthe end of adolescence and the end of life A familial scream held in Amoment both transient and desperately ercely xated upon Theyre not remotely okay They know it Thats all they have And then theres Moses Toby Wallaces gloriously broken and deantfailson gets a brilliant entrance that slides from near suicide to toweringrat-haired Olympian to deeply terried stranger in under three minutesHes charming plausible never once trustworthy and never knows how togo away Wallace is gangly awkward charming furious and terried Heswounded from the start covering it up doing a bad job and knowing itHes a mercurial element in the familys pre-calcied grief Milla adopts himas much as he does her Two half-lives making a dierent whole in which
all four roll along often merrily sometimes even in the same direction Hyperbolic as the subject matter could so easily have been Rita Kalnejaisadapts her own play with wit and gentleness and in a manner that puts theoriginal text last This is a fearsome cast four dynamos powering along inthe same unity their characters arent She and debut feature directorShannon Murphy do an exemplary job of clearing the ground for the castfolding in visual witticisms at every turn Mendelsohn gets to do a littlescrewball comedy Scanlens laser-like stare powers scenes along andWallaces permanent motion and carefully orchestrated sincerity is funnyand horrifying in equal measure Davis is the secret breakout thoughutterly convincing as she careens from emotion to emotion Awake at thewheel but unable to steer Babyteeth isnt a movie about something horrible happening Its aboutwhether its okay to be bored waiting for it to arrive It is Because in thislong all too nite summer of nal adolescence what these charactersdiscover in the heat haze and mist isnt serenity but reassurance Millasdeath is not a full stop at the end of a book Its at the end of a paragraphAnd the magic of the lm is in how that makes it both something to bemourned and celebrated Babyteeth is available this week and its going to be a hard watch for somebut a rewarding oddly reassuring watch for many others

Echo Sector Editors note GUITARS Oh but I love surf rock Give me surf astrorock And I am a very very happyboy INDEED Echo Sector is surf rock the same way Dan Dare is a hymn to the RAF to thecore and with a twinkle in its eye Thats rarely truer than on the trackSandwom Strut where keyboard player and author Spencer Ellsworthdrives the band into a tight funky near-disco frenzy which then turns into aSpector-esque wall of noise I will absolutely be hearing where andwhenever I see worm sign next summer Space with a hint of back alley carchase There isnt a bad track on this album song after song which wouldnt feelout of place playing on the Dark Stars ightdeck on their way to SantaMonica I especially liked Quasar Quagmire with its carefully plotted orbits
of ris and refrains Like contemporaries Daikaiju they mix science ctionand surf riding the waves of each with equal skill Capt Dan Steely is the standout for me though Starting with a franticprecise nod to Dick Dale its the sort of crashing soaring piece of musicyoud expect to play over the opening credits of a TV show where peoplejump away from slow motion explosions -- Captain Steely Space Patrol --and Id own every episode The album sprints through its run time but never checks its watch and eachtrack feels broad expansive and composed Album closer MidwestDestroyer is equal parts mad science car chase and beach party Which aswe all know is the best kind The album also includes three ash pieces from Spencer Ellsworth and theyalone would absolutely be worth the price of admission The Titans is thenal stage of a voyage that is not as advertised but perhaps deserves to beCattle Drive is a Martian cowboy noir and Night Sighs Well thats the bestsurng story Ive ever read Especially set on Jupiter Wide expansive music full of the joy and knowledge of complexity Theseare stories machine-tooled by an expert author into haunting beautifulbarbs of the future From 12th Planet by Echo Sector is available now Find more of Spencersbooks here and Spencer here
