CareerClassCaseStudiesInthefallof2016,employerledcasestudieswereincorporatedintovariouscareercoursestaughtbytheCLDCasacapstoneproject.Theseprojectsweredesignedtocreateanawarenessofuniquecareeropportunitiesthroughtheclassroom.Thecasestudyconnectsstudentsandemployersinanengagingeducationalenvironmentalwhereemployerscangagetheability,creativityandskilllevelofpotentialcandidates.Employerscanmarketandbrandtheirorganizationandopportunitiestocandidateswhomaynothaveconsideredtheirorganizationbefore.Theseprojectsalsohelpstudentsidentifytheskillsnecessarytolandinternshipsorfull-timepositionsaftergraduation.

AssessmentLeadershipCoaching:Pilotassessmentresults(N=99)indicatestudentsperceivedtheircoachsuccessfullymadethemfeelcomfortable(91.9%),supported(97%),focused(94.9%),andempowered(91.9%),andthattheirperceivedattitude,self-efficacy,andintentiontoimproveinaleadershipskillincreased.Further,moststudents(80%)reportedlearningverymuchoranextremeamount,and87%reportedfullcompletionofatleastoneoftypicallytwogoalstheyset.Finally,amultipleregressionanalysisindicatedlevelofempowermentinspiredbythecoach(B=0.303,p<0.05)andreportedlearning(B=0.211,p<0.05)weresignificantpredictorsofgoalcompletioninthethirdsession(R2=0.058,F(2,96)=2.935,p=0.058).Duringfallandspringsemestersofthe2016-17academicyear,atotalof386(69.3%female)studentscompletedallthreeLeadershipCoachingsessionsaswellasacomprehensiveLeadershipCoachingAssessment.Resultsofthisnew,researched-basedassessmentparallelthepilotresultsintermsofcoachingratings,perceivedlearning,andgoalcompletion.Further,avastmajority(97.5%)ofstudentsindicatedtheywereconfidentusingtheirstrengthstodevelopskillsinthefutureand97.6%reportedgreatimprovementintheirchosenskill.
Pre-postfindingsindicateparticipationinallthreeLeadershipCoachingsessionssignificantlyenhancedmeasuresofstudents’attitude(t(291)=6.46;p<0.0001,d=0.38),self-efficacy(t(292)=7.24;p<0.0001,d=0.41),subjectivenorm(t(292)=5.19;p<0.0001,d=0.30),andintentiontosetfuturegoals(t(294)=5.34;p<0.0001,d=0.31).Further,significantimprovementsinstudents’self-esteem(t(290)=4.03;p<0.0001,d=0.24),internallocusofcontrol(t(292)=7.04;p<0.0001,d=0.41),andchancelocusofcontrol(t(290)=6.69;p<0.0001,d=0.39)werefoundbeforeversusafterleadershipcoachingparticipation.Finally,directmeasuresoflearningSMARTgoal-setting(t(275)=12.94;p<0.0001,d=1.56)andSTARarticulation(t(292)=12.44;p<0.0001,d=1.46)demonstratedstatisticallysignificantincreasesasaresultofparticipationinLeadershipCoaching.ThesefindingssuggestparticipationinLeadershipCoachinghasapositive,short-termimpactonstudents’intrinsiccontrol,confidence,well-being,andlearning.
Attitudetowardgoal-setting,reportedconfidencecompletingtheirgoal,andchancelocusofcontrolweresignificantlyrelatedtogoalcompletion.Amultipleregressionanalysisindicatedattitudetowardgoal-setting(B=0.142,p<0.05)andreportedconfidencecompletingtheirgoal(B=0.170)remainedsignificantpredictorsofgoalcompletioninthepresenceofallthreepredictors(R2=0.058,F(3,225)=4.595,p<0.01).Welookforwardtodisseminatingthesefindingsandincorporatingbothour4-monthfollow-upandalumnidatatodeterminethepotentiallong-termimpactofLeadershipCoaching.
