554321 is more than just aname, it is a countdown tosomething about to hap-pen and its happening

now and will continue to happen! With their new original EP

‘Motion Picture Scenery’ the bandhas successfully combined their twofavourite genres; classic Americanfilm soundtracks and 70s BritishRock! The band insists that the EPmust be listened to in full to be ap-preciated. I met up and sat down withtheir very own frontman, Rory Taylorat the popular and iconic Cavern inLiverpool whilst they were gettingready to perform for the first timesince Rory’s appearance on ITVshow Jesus Christ Superstar.

How did the band come together? The band is a family band really sothere’s me, my 3 brothers and mycousin Liam who plays the bass. We’ve been playing together foryears really and in all sorts of carna-tions of bands with various other peo-ple as well but finally now we’vesettled on the family, we’ve had vari-ous friends come and go and join theband but we get on really well. It’squite sickening really but we do geton really well. So yeah we’ve beenplaying together as this band forabout 2 years but before that wewere playing as a similar line doingcovers, corporate events, weddingsand all sorts of stuff like that. This ismore fun though!

Did you always want to be in aband growing up?Err, I always wanted to perform I did-n’t really care how it came about. Iwas kind of an attention seeker as achild and I think this is how’s it mani-fested itself later into a job, which isquite nice!

Who are your idols in the music in-dustry and why?Well, my biggest idol of all time, ohactually I can’t say that. My twobiggest idols of all time are Freddie

Mercury and Michael Jackson;they’re my biggest inspirations. Fred-die for his sheer vocals and hisshowmanship was just somethingelse. Again with Michael Jackson hewas just an entertainer just like Fred-die was. The pair of them were reallyunique; they had no limits, no bound-aries to their performances. Anythinganyone else could do they could do ita million times better and that trans-lates to record and other various liveDVDs they did. It’s just amazing justperforming now and watching what

they did ‘cus you just think we’re noteven close. I wish we were but we’renot, just to that energy and to thatmagic that they put out!

How did if feel being part of the TVshow Jesus Christ Super Star?It was quite strange really; it was avery odd experience because fromthe beginning from the very first audi-tion to the final of the show was sixmonths on my life.I was standing there on the finalknowing that if I didn’t win it that wasthe end of it and that was six monthsof commitment all come to an end.But knowing if I won it, it was goingto change my life for a long time insuch a big role. It’s strange I think I

knew on the day of the final I wasn’tgoing to win; I just had a feeling Iknew Ben was going to win and I’mgenuinely happy for him! I’ve been tosee the show and I think it’s ab-solutely fantastic!

Has being on Jesus Christ SuperStar affected you and your band?Yeah, you can’t underestimate thepower of Twitter and the power of theinternet. Being on a high profileshow like Superstar got me a lot ofTwitter followers and I’m not reallyvery technically minded with thosethings I’ve got my legs and voice soI’ve kind of just used that. I’ve had tolearn how to communicate with thisfan base no matter how small it might

be. You have to keep communicatingand engaging them with what you’redoing and what’s going on so I’mdoing my best to do that over Twitterand Facebook. So regarding thebands profile yeah it’s got a few peo-ple interested and opened some nicedoors and opportunities.

Did you have a lot of support inyour hometown?Yeah it seemed so! Again it was quitestrange because being down in Lon-don and being away from everythingwas a strange experience for me.I’m used to being in the centre of allof it. With other people being on theother side of the camera it’s not likehaving your audience directly in frontof you all the time, where you can getthat feedback. You can hear the ap-plause you can hear people booingmaybe or you can hear whateverthat’s your direct feedback on stage,so to be on TV is a very differentthing. It appears back here I had a lotof support when I came home a lot ofrandom people I never met beforecame up to me saying that they hadvoted and everything. Its cool all thelocal papers have been great, thelocal radios have been really goodwith us as well, so yeah I really ap-preciate it!

Where’s your favourite placeyou’ve ever performed?Err, I dunno I know it’s really boringanswer but I don’t know if I have one.Obviously I love preforming here inthe Cavern, but there’s almost a feel-

ing of home here. I like performinganywhere that’s got a crowd thatwants to hear us and I think a lot ofperformers would say that. But any-where were people will come and lis-ten is great.

Do you have a ritual before youperform? It depends where I am. If I’m in theCavern its usually to have a pint, buterr no I don’t I’m not one of thosepeople who has to turn on and off thelight switch a thousand times, al-though I do have to put my left shoeon first, that’s a really strange one I’llthrow that one in. If I put my rightshoe on first it throws me for thewhole day so I always put my leftshoe on first. There’s a fact aboutme, so yeah I do. Oh, god! There Iwas thinking I wasn’t a weirdo but ac-tually am. So there you go, left shoefirst.

What has been your craziest expe-rience?I think some of the experiencesthrough Superstar where you wouldmeet people or you would be in thesame room as someone, for instanceI was in the studio one day and TimMinchin came up to me and said “HiRory, how’s it going?” and I’d nevermet him before and I was like howdoes he know my name but clearlyhe’d been watching the show be-cause he’s got an invested interest init. So that’s kind of strange to knowthat people know who you are. Wewere in a meeting one day, I think it

was our first or second day in the TVstudios and Dawn French walked into our meeting and was like “Hiboys!” And she’s tiny and shewalked right in and gave us all a hugand that’s weird! Seeing these peo-ple who you admire and you watchon TV and you absolutely love, it’sjust unbelievable! So I think meetingall those people makes the experi-ences so surreal. Singing with GaryBarlow as well was pretty cool andwas quite surreal. The whole Super-star thing was just odd from start tofinish it was very strange.

What do you guys have plannedfor the future?Well my plans in general for the fu-ture are to just keep pushing theband and doing as much as we can.But I suppose alongside that I needto be doing things that further me asa performer as well so I’m touringnext year in a production ‘Rent’ whichis a musical based in New York, it’sthe 20th anniversary this next yearcoming and we’re doing a concerttour with on with Kerry Ellis who’sfrom Wicked, We Will Rock You andall those things. So me and her arestaring in it and we’re doing two orthree weeks of it, so it’s going to begood. I’m looking forward to that andwe’ve got some cool gigs coming upand a supporting gig with Mel C andhopefully we’ve got a few other nicethings coming up next year that Idon’t want to jinx by saying anything. So we’ll see what happens.Interview & Photographs by Ashleigh Ravenscroft
