Why do I need to do physical activity? At any age, physical activity provides a range of health benefits. And the good news is that it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Moderate-intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking, is great for your health. Regular physical activity will:

• Improve your long-term health • Help you to improve your cholesterol• Reduce your risk of heart attack • Lower your blood pressure• Give you more energy • Make your bones and muscles stronger• Help you to manage your weight • Make you feel more confident, happy and relaxed

How can I be more physically active? At home At work Socially

Get off the couch or off the chair – the more you sit, the less active you will be.

Walk over to speak to a colleague instead of phoning them or sending them an email.

Catch up with friends and family for a walk.

Walk to the next room to speak to a family member rather than shouting through walls.

Take a break or use your lunch break to go for a walk- even 10 to 15 minutes is a good effort.

Visit your local park and take a picnic.

Watch one less TV program each week and do something active during that time instead. You could go for a walk, do some housework or gardening, or play games with your kids.

If there are stairs, use them. Discover your local walking tracks.

If you sit at a desk all day, do some stretching exercises at least once a day.

Join a local community class, such as belly dancing, tai chi and yoga.

Message from the MayorThe Active Maribyrnong initiative focuses on increasing participation in sport and recreation across the City of Maribyrnong to promote health and wellbeing within our community.

Our city is home to many wonderful local parks and reserves as well as great walking and bike paths which run along the Maribyrnong River and throughout the municipality.

To guide the community through all that is on offer, an Active Maribyrnong Guide has been developed as a centralised reference which documents sport and recreation programs,

facilities and opportunities available to residents throughout the municipality.

For increased health and wellbeing and the opportunity to engage with your local community, I encourage everyone in the City of Maribyrnong to ‘Get Out There, Get Active’.

Cr Grant Miles Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong

Access for All Abilities is a Victorian Government initiative coordinated by Sport and Recreation Victoria and includes the participation of over 25 State Sport Associations and community organisations. The AAA program supports and develops inclusive sport and recreation opportunities for people with a disability throughout Victoria, and aims to include families, friends, carers, clubs, sporting associations, leisure centres and community groups. Everyone involved benefits from Access for All Abilities.

Not only are there health and wellbeing benefits to be found in active recreation and sport, but there are opportunities to meet new people, make new friends, learn new skills, have fun, or even build a whole new sporting career!

The Access for All Abilities – First Point of Call Service connects people with a disability in Melbourne to sports and recreation opportunities, acting as an ‘opportunity broker’ or ‘front door’ for people needing assistance in finding the right fit for them or simply seeking information on available sports and recreation options.

Visit www.aaavic.org.au for more information or call 1800 222 842 to talk to someone about getting active today. Follow us on Twitter @Access4AA or like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/aaavic

Bulldogs Koorie Youth Program – Nallei Jerring (Join and Unite)

The Western Bulldogs’ Nallei-Jerring (join and unite) Program aims to support Koori youth engagement in schools, by providing young males and females (aged 10-14 years) from Melbourne’s Western Region with high value experiential opportunities through the Western Bulldogs and its partner agencies. Program ambassadors Liam Jones, Brett Goodes and Koby Stevens will assist the young people throughout the 6 month program consisting of both practical and professional development workshops.

Settlement Grants Program

The Bulldogs’ Settlement Grants Program assists new arrivals to settle in Australia through participation in a variety of community engagement initiatives including: annual sports programs, youth leadership camps, youth groups, Healthy Living Programs and much more.

The Whitten ProjectThe Whitten Project is a new and innovative Western Bulldogs youth leadership program aimed at identifying and growing emerging young

leaders in Melbourne’s West.

The Whitten Project will provide a squad of 40 boys and girls from the West with exciting opportunities to engage in their community and develop leadership potential through the vehicle of sport – especially football.

This unique initiative is delivered in partnership with Maribyrnong, Melton, Hobsons Bay and Brimbank Councils, the AFL, AFL Victoria, SportsWest, State Government and Victoria University with support from the Western Region Football League (WRFL).

*The 2014 program is subject to approval.

Bulldogs Friendly Schools ProgramThe Bulldogs Friendly Schools Program (BFS) forms an integral part of our of Community Club strategy through its

commitment and support of schools in the western region. The program communicates the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle in a respectful and inclusive setting, demonstrated through fun and interactive activities that are designed to engage young people from all backgrounds. Embedded in the program are five core values; Respect, Leadership, Harmony, Teamwork and Fair Play.

The BFS Program has just completed its sixth year and is continuing to strengthen and grow as we reach out to more schools in the west. In 2013, 53 primary and secondary schools participated in the program through a wide range of initiatives. The program also provided up to 75 Victoria University Pre-Service Teachers with the opportunity to further enhance their professional development through a quality community based partnership.

All Bulldogs Friendly Schools are given the opportunity to receive Western Bulldogs player appearances, Bulldog’s Backyard tickets at Etihad Stadium, invitations to community and leadership events, and plenty of great Western Bulldogs giveaways.

The Western Bulldogs, together with the continued support of its partners Mission Foods and Victoria University, will continue to grow and strengthen its Bulldogs Friendly Schools Program in 2014 and beyond.

Bulldogs Total FootySpiritWest Services is running a unique program designed to increase sport and recreation options for people of all abilities in the Western Region. Bulldogs Total Footy is an innovative program that uses Australian Rules Football to engage participants in key areas of:

• Nutrition

• Physical training

• Communication

• Skill development

• Technology.

Matching people and sports: TeamUpVictorians love their sport, and according to recent research, over half of Victorians intend to increase their physical activities in the next year.

This means there is a huge pool of people across the state looking for an opportunity to get active, find a new sport or club, or reconnect with their local sporting community.

So how can clubs reach these people and let them know what’s on offer? TeamUp, a free new app developed by VicHealth, is here to help.

TeamUp allows people to search for sports and activities in their local area and connect with clubs and others who share their interests. TeamUp makes it easier for people to get active by tackling the most common

barriers: a lack of time and a lack of social connections. With TeamUp, users can filter search results by time and day, activity type and geographical area to find activities that fit their schedule.

Clubs can list their activities on TeamUp for free. More than 100 different sports and activities are already listed, ranging from social sporting opportunities to structured club memberships, catering for beginners through to experienced sportspeople.

TeamUp provides clubs with an innovative promotional tool to connect with people who are looking to be more active. It is a new way to spread the word about clubs’ activities and invite new participants.

Download the app for iPhone, Android or through Facebook from teamup.com.au.
