Catholic High School Information

Our philosophy:

Catholic High School was

founded in 1935 by the late

Reverend Father Edward

Becheras, a French missionary.

It is a Catholic institution but

takes in both Catholic and

non-Catholic students.

The school had her humble beginnings within the

premises of the Church of St Peter and Paul at Queen

Street. To cope with the demand for places, it relocated

to its present site in Bishan in 1992.

Reverend Father Becheras envisioned the school as an institution of

learning, and also one for acquiring competence in bilingualism. His

enunciation – “The way of the Catholic High School is a way made of

two rails – Chinese and English, free from any entanglement, straight

to its end. Happy are those who follow. They shall obtain the scope of

a sound education” remains firmly as a cornerstone of the school’s

philosophy.

School Vision:

The Catholic High student is a leader, gentleman and bilingual scholar

of high integrity and robust character, who is passionate about life,

learning and service to others.

公教学生是个具有高尚情操,坚韧个性,同时,热爱生活,

热爱学习,并且愿为人群服务的领袖、双语学者与彬彬君子。

School Mission:

To establish CHS as a school of distinction in innovative and

challenging programmes, a forerunner in character building and a

beacon for the mindset of excellence, firmly built upon the foundation

of Christian values.

School Values:

We do everything with LOVE

We pursue our goals with CONSTANCY OF PURPOSE

We promote CREATIVITY

We seek CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Some of Our School’s Signature Programmes

Teach Me to Fish Programme (P4 – P6)

‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you

feed him for a lifetime.’ - Unknown

At Catholic High School, we believe that life skills competencies are

necessary for the total development of pupils. These competencies are the

knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that pupils need to possess to

become healthy and well-balanced individuals. The pupils’ ability to manage

self would mean a higher degree of success in managing other areas in their

life.

Together with a group of enthusiastic and supportive parent-volunteers, we

have set aside a day teaching pupils some life skills. The objective of this

programme is to equip the pupils with some practical skills for personal

effectiveness. Lessons will cover skills on simple sewing, using a can-opener,

tying a necktie, simple first-aid & cooking etc.

GEP Department (GEP)

The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) in Catholic

High School was established in 1998. The

programme aims to provide our pupils with an

accelerated and enriched academic programme in

an environment steeped in the traditions of

bilingualism. We also strive to provide an

educational experience conducive for the moral and

character development of our pupils.

Catholic High School received its first batch of 33 GEP boys

in January of 1998 under the care of 5 teachers. Since

those early days, the programme has grown to its present

size of 116 pupils in the three levels (P4-P6), and a

teaching staff of 16.

DEPARTMENT VISION

The CH GEP student is a morally upright and effectively bilingual

individual, who constantly strives for continuous improvement as a

servant leader and critical thinker.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

To establish the Department as a forerunner in Rigorous and

Challenging Programmes supported by Innovative Pedagogies and

Action Research that promote the school values and a mindset of

excellence.

DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

We believe that each pupil has his own talents. Coupled with a

rigorous curriculum and caring environment that encourages

creativity and critical thinking, the pupils' talents are recognised,

nurtured and ultimately, developed to help them on their journey to

become responsible leaders who have a strong social

conscience and commitment to serve others.

mainstream pupils. Selected mainstream pupils will have HCL, PE,

Art and Music lessons together. (Refer to #11)

4. Individual Research Studies (IRS)

Basic research skills will be taught in modules to all P4 pupils. A

mini-assignment concludes each module to assess the pupils’

understanding of that module. This is taught outside

curriculum hours every Wednesday from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15

13

8. Catechism classes

All Catholic pupils are to attend

Catechism classes (1 period a week)

that are taught by our teachers

during curriculum time.

9. Social and Emotional Needs

We see to our pupils’ social and emotional

development through these school activities and

lessons:

CCA – All pupils are advised to take part in at least 1

core CCA for holistic development.

Teach Me To Fish Programme – A programme for all

pupils to learn basic life skills such as ironing of clothes.

Values In Action Programme (VIA) – All pupils are to

take part actively in VIA projects organised by the

school.

Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) – Social Emotional Learning

(SEL) is explicitly taught during FTGP. In addition, form teachers bond

with pupils through interaction activities during the period. Lessons on

Cyber Wellness (CW), Education and Career Guidance (ECG) and

protection from abuse (Primary 1 to Primary 4) are incorporated in

FTGP lessons to address specific issues, reinforce core values and

develop social and emotional competencies to enable pupils to apply

them to specific contexts.

11. Intermingling For GEP

The Intermingling Programme in CHS aims to provide opportunities

for the gifted pupils and the mainstream pupils to learn and grow

together. Through this platform, it allows the gifted pupils to make

friends with more pupils in the school, thus widening their social circle

and building up their social emotional competencies.

Here in CHS, the P4, P5 and 6 GE classes have integrated

lessons in PE, ART and Music. This year, the GEP and NGEP

pupils learnt rock climbing, ART animation, etc, in their

Page 14: Contents · - Pupils must not bring toys / electronic games / picture cards to school or keep them in their school bags. - Pupils must not bring sharp instruments / objects, eg. scissors,

14

intermingling classes. Through these interactions, the pupils

had opportunities to work together which helped them to bond

better.

For the P5 and P6 level, the 2 GE classes of each level are integrated

with 1 mainstream class of 40 pupils to form the intermingling classes.

These are classes are named 5GEM1, 5GEM2, 5GEM3, 6GEM1, 6GEM2

and 6GEM3. For the P4 level, the 1 GE class is integrated with 1

mainstream class to form 4GEM1, 4GEM2 and 4GEM3.

In addition, the P4 GE class (24 pupils) is integrated with a selected

group of 25 mainstream pupils who have demonstrated an aptitude in

Chinese. These selected mainstream pupils are pulled out from their

mainstream Higher Chinese class to join the P4 GEP pupils for Chinese

lessons. The classes are named iCL1 & iCL2.

All GE pupils have English, Math, Science, Social Studies, CME and

ISOs taught in their intact classes, which are known as their “form

classes”. Their form classes are known as 4FAITHFULNESS and

4GENTLENESS; 5FAITHFULNESS and 5GENTLENESS;

6FAITHFULNESS and 6GENTLENESS. All administrative matters are

carried out in their form classes.

CHS GEP Programmes for 2018

The GEP Leadership Programme

In March, the GEP department organised its annual school

camp for the pupils, the time of the year where all the GEP

pupils gather together as one big family. The theme of the

camp this year is “Refined Gentlemen of CHS”. While

leadership is a constant theme of this annual affair, this year,

it was hoped that through the various games and activities,

pupils will learn and reflect about the different qualities of

being a refined gentleman. It was certainly a timely reminder

for the pupils that they are called to be leaders, gentlemen

and bilingual scholars here in CHS.

Not only did the pupils enjoy themselves thoroughly bonding

with their friends, but they also made new friends from the other

levels while collaborating in teams. As with past camps, the

seniors would always be seen exercising servant leadership, as

they cared for and guided the younger ones.

Page 16: Contents · - Pupils must not bring toys / electronic games / picture cards to school or keep them in their school bags. - Pupils must not bring sharp instruments / objects, eg. scissors,

16

Community in Service

Here in CHS, emphasis is not solely placed on developing academic

rigour. Equally important is the character development of our pupils.

Built into the Citizenship and Character Education curriculum, our

3-year Values-in-Action (VIA) programme aims to provide platforms

at different levels for our pupils to demonstrate their initiative and

show care and concern for people in our community.

At Primary 4, the GEP pupils learn that showing kindness can begin by

making small steps, such as by getting to know the people who help to

keep the school clean, in this case, the Operations Support Officers. In

Project Joy, the pupils will write notes of appreciation and give them to

the Operation Support Officers.

At Primary 5, the GEP pupils learn entrepreneurship skills through

running Project Care, a fundraising project for the elderly at Xin Yuan

Community Care. The event which was held on 24 April raised a total

of $413.40.

The Primary 6 Service Learning Programme is a project in

collaboration with Xin Yuan Community Care where the pupils plan

meaningful activities to engage the elderly over multiple visits. At the

conclusion of the programme, the pupils will organise a concert,

showcasing their varied talents besides academic talents to entertain

the elderly.

Our pupils’ comments about the GEP in CHS

Reflection 1:

The journey in Catholic High School GEP has

definitely been a fulfilling and enriching one. The

learning environment in Catholic High School

(CHS) is very conducive and the teachers put in

immense efforts not just to help us academically,

but to develop us holistically. Although there

were challenges, I’ve learnt to persevere and

develop grit and resilience through my struggles.

I’ve also learnt to work with others effectively, to

empathise with others and to be open to

differing perspectives.

The teachers also planned many study visits

to widen our horizons and organised VIA trips to

the old folks’ home to serve the elderly. We were

given opportunities to organise activities by

ourselves, which had taught me much about

independence, responsibility and leadership.

Through the VIA experiences, we learnt about

“leading by serving” and “serving by leading”.

The CHS GEP programme has not only enriched

me with knowledge but also equipped me with

precious life skills.

I enjoyed the school experience and the

nurturing environment thoroughly.

24

Reflection 2:

The GEP programme in CHS had surpassed

my expectations when I first entered in 2015. I

expected a more intensive academic curriculum

with loads of homework given. Indeed that was

true but what I did not expect was the personal

attention I received from the teachers and an

environment which I was allowed to express

myself more freely. Catholic High School’s

environment is impressive as it is a full school

with the Secondary side. Hence it has a larger

compound and more facilities than most schools.

The journey in Catholic High GEP has

nurtured me into a young teen with resilience. All

challenges were overcome with a never-say-die

attitude and a positive mindset. Our teachers

pushed us to maximise our potential but they

never failed to encourage us and be our guiding

light. We learnt from our failures and we learnt to

rise above them and strive on.

The journey and life experiences I’ve gained

from the school activities and programmes have

toughened me up and taught me responsibility

and discipline. Through this journey, I’ve

matured and valued every moment with my

teachers and friends.

Reflection 3:

Ever since I joined the Gifted Education

Programme in Catholic High School (Primary), I

have not regretted a single moment of it. The

curriculum has been really exciting - enriching our

minds, challenging our limits and pushing us to

excel. The journey is like riding a roller coaster,

bringing us through thrills and anticipation. Besides

the academics, our school programmes also

focussed on developing us into leaders, gentlemen

and bilingual scholars. I was given many

opportunities to learn about leadership and the

robust non-academic school programmes have

helped to transform me, a Catholic High boy into a

young gentlemen.

We had fun times too especially during team

activities in class, games, competitions and also the

various camps that we attended. I also treasured

the opportunities given to me in taking part in

National Competitions like Math and Science

Olympiads.

My classmates and I have forged strong

friendships in the three years. Our teachers are very

caring and understanding. During lessons, we often

had lots of fun and laughter. I am sure anyone will

enjoy Catholic High experience just as much as I

did!

Reflection 4:

Being in the GEP in Catholic High School has

helped shape my character and inspire me to always

strive for greater heights. I have been in Catholic

High since Primary One, so choosing this school

back in Primary Three came naturally to me.

However, looking back, studying in Catholic High

has really enriched me holistically. It was not an

easy journey in the past three years but it was

definitely a manageable one with the support of

friends and dedicated teachers. Although the

curriculum and projects were challenging, the

teachers had taught us to embrace a growth

mindset and believe in the possible. The positive

thoughts and learning attitudes I have developed

have helped me to persevere and pursue

excellence. I was never alone in this journey as my

teachers and friends were always there for me like a

family. Their care and love gave me a secure and

warm environment to grow.

Besides my academic teachers, my CCA

teachers were also very dedicated and encouraging.

I felt very well-loved and the saying that “It takes a

whole village to raise a child” is indeed very true in

Catholic High. If I were given a second chance to

pick a school, Catholic High School will be my one

and only choice.
