open up at 08.40 am. Children are dropped off at the

classroom door. All children need to be in class by 8:50.

Lunchtime (lunch to be ordered by 10.00 am. Please notify

of late arrivals).

School Uniform

We are very proud of our school uniform and encourage the children to wear

it at all times in school.

Sweatshirts/Cardigans with school logo, P.E. T-shirts, shorts, and book bags

are for sale at Andrew Leach’s, Lee Lane, Horwich or Whitakers Schoolwear

in Bolton. Book bags are also available from the School Office at a cost of

£4.50. All other items can be bought from a variety of retail outlets.

The EYFS changed in September 2012 and the areas

A Typical Day in the Foundation Unit

A typical day in Reception will involve: Self registration

Activities are planned based on the prime and specific areas of learning and are

tailored towards the children’s interests and needs.

Learning Journals Each child has their own online Learning Journal and special book in which the class

teacher or key person records the learning that has been achieved. This may be in note

form or photographic evidence or examples of work. We may ask you to contribute to

these throughout the year and you are able look at them online with your own log in to

the Tapestry app.

Key Workers In the foundation unit each child has a key worker. The named member of staff is

assigned to individual children to act as a key point of contact for the parents and child.

Settling in is done on an individual basis because children vary greatly in their emotional

needs.

Your child should be brought to school and into the classroom by an adult and collected

by an adult.

If for some reason another person is collect-

ing your child please let us know as soon as

Discipline Praise the Good!

At Chorley New Road we expect children to;

be aware of the needs of others,

share with others,

consider other children’s feelings,

carry out expected tasks,

be aware of the sanctity of other people’s possessions.

We encourage children to show good behaviour at all times but especially at playtime

and lunchtime.

As a community we try to provide an atmosphere which allows its members to feel hap-

py and secure. We hope that parents and staff can work together for the mutual benefit of

the children.

From nursery through to year 6, we positively encourage and support good behaviour

and manners, both applauding and rewarding evidence of effort and attainment. At the

same time we try to create opportunities for children to learn and grow in a shared com-

munity.

If this does not appear to be happening we look for ways to remedy the situation either at

school, via contact with parents or within the community at large.

CONTRIBUTIONS We ask for a £1.00 per week contribution.

This money goes towards the cost of snack, cookery

ingredients, flour for play dough, colouring for the water play and any extra items

that enhance our regular provision.

LUNCHTIME AND SNACK

Chorley New Road School

promotes healthy eating. Lunch is run on a cafeteria system.

Children choose their own meal which always includes

vegetables, salad and fresh fruit. The kitchen staff work hard to

create themed menus and bring a variety of choices to the

children.

All Reception and Key stage 1 pupils are now

entitled to a free school meal under the government Universal Free School Meal

scheme.

Nursery children pay £1.70 per day for lunch.

Please fill in the form within your child’s

admissions pack as to your preference on school dinners or packed lunches.

Lunchtime is an important social occasion when children establish friendships.

Foundation unit staff accompany nursery

children throughout their lunch and the staff will accompany the reception chil-

dren whilst they

settle into the lunch time routines.

The children in foundation stage have a snack each day and fruit. They also have

milk every day and continual access to water. We ask for a £1 contribution per

week towards this.

Starting School Checklist

By the time your child starts school he/she should ideally:-

know some shapes and colours

recognise some numerals

be able to count out or collect sets of 5 objects,

be able to listen attentively for 5 minutes to a story,

be able to listen to a simple instruction and carry it out,

be able to hold a pencil and make marks on paper,

be able to recite simple nursery rhymes and songs,

understand big/small...tall/short...hot/cold etc.,

be able to take turns and share equipment,

be able to tidy away when play has ended.

be able to recognise their name

There are certain areas where you can really help your child’s

independence. It will assist us greatly if your child can:-

dress him/herself, put on and fasten their coat,

put on hats and gloves and put them safely away in pockets,

turn their clothes the right side out after undressing.

Your time and attention is the most precious thing that you can give

to your child. It will equip them with many of the skills that are

needed for future development in school.

expansion of ideas.

Listen to your Child

Be interested in what they have to say.

Read to your Child

Join the library and make your visits fun. Children who are

encouraged to participate, learn more quickly. Have some time every

day when you and your child are together without distractions.

Reading has a high focus at Chorley New Road and we encourage

children to borrow books from school. Please take great care of them

on our behalf. Keep them away from unsupervised toddlers who may

tear pages or write in them. Look after them and know where they

are. We do make a charge for any books which are lost or badly

damaged in order to keep our stock of books as high as possible.

Reception children are expected to read or share a book with an

adult each night. Please record the interaction in their reading diaries.

Learning begins at home

Children learn by doing, so involve your child in every day experiences. Much

of the Early Years curriculum is based on exploring the immediate environment.

Let your child take part in; jobs to be done, talk about the order you will do them (first, second, next,

after that, lastly etc).

sorting out the washing, (colour, type, material etc.)

looking at sizes of clothes, shoes and objects (bigger than, smaller than etc.)

cooking and baking (Ingredients and safety).

making out simple shopping lists before you go out.

setting the table.

Always try to use the correct names for objects, plants, foods etc.

Homework

The Early Years stage staff may send home activities for you to support your

children with. This may be a maths challenge, a ‘talking’ or a written task.

These will be carefully matched to a topic we are doing.

Each week staff will send a newsletter home to inform you of the focus in

school, so that you can discuss this with your child and develop further their un-

derstanding. This weekly newsletters will also keep you informed about events

in school so please look out for this.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Up to two nursery years (part-time) and one reception year ( full-time) lay the foundation on

which future learning can be developed.

Key Stage 1

In years 1 and 2 children work within the National Primary Curriculum guidelines. At the end

of Year 2 the chldren are tested to determine their levels of ability.

Key Stage 2

In years 3,4,5 and 6 children follow the National Primary Curriculum at increasing levels of

difficulty. At the end of Year 6 the children are tested to determine their level of ability.

Further information and meetings are held to give you more information when your child enters

each of these areas.

Medicines in School

If your child is ill and requires medicine we would prefer all

medicines to be administered at home. (A prescription advising a dose three times a day can be administered without

involving school)

Staff are not legally obliged to administer medicine. However, we realise that there may be the odd time when we can be of help in

a difficult situation and therefore the Governors have drawn up a medicines

policy for parents and guardians to follow.

A copy of this policy is included in the booklet together with the

official request form.

NB. Without this no medication can be given.

More request forms can be obtained from the school office.

The following procedures must be followed closely to ensure the safety of

all the children in school.

Only prescribed medication will be considered.

The medication should be clearly labelled with the child’s name and correct

dosage.

All medication must be brought into school by an adult and handed in at the

school office.

All medication must be collected from the school office by an adult.

Remember… medicines can be lethal in the wrong hands, never send a

child to school with their own medication. They could be left in bags and

taken by other children without the teacher knowing of the danger.
