Overview, Target Audience and Learner OutcomeAs we celebrate the 39th annual perinatal conference, much progress has been made in the care of high-risk pregnancies, pregnant women, sick newborns and families. Still, we have more work to do. Issues to be addressed include aspects related to antenatal, fetal, intrapartum, neonatal and follow-up care.

This conference is intended for nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, respiratory therapists and other maternal/child health providers practicing in a variety of roles and settings throughout Colorado, Wyoming and the surrounding region. Providing a forum for perinatal health care professionals, topics covered will enhance and broaden knowledge of current and future perinatal practice. Attendees will be able to share knowledge and resources with colleagues, patients and families, and suggest actions that will enhance knowledge, skill/performance and/or attitude within their clinical/work setting.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this conference, participants should be able to:

Evening Presentation

• Describe the goal and key interventions of:

» WHO Safe Childbirth

» Every Newborn Action Plan

• Examine the unique benefits in both high- and low-resource settings for:

» skin to skin as standard of care for term and preterm infants

» delayed cord clamping

Conference Presentations

• Explain how population health brings together both clinical and public health entities to improve perinatal health outcomes.

• Describe hospital-based efforts to improve adherence to health promoting practices after hospital discharge for high-risk infants.

• Identify educational tools for families and staff that can assist with decreased or no marijuana use before and after delivery.

• Name the least impactful pain medication on the developing brain that has been studied.

• Discuss the benefits and limitations of prenatal genetic testing for fetal anomalies.

• Identify both the indications for fetal surgery and the anesthetic implications when caring for the parturient and fetus.

• Describe ethical frameworks to guide complex decision making and clinical practice at the frontier of perinatal medicine.

Continuing Education CreditAttendance is verified by sign-in sheets. A certificate of attendance will be available upon completion of the online evaluation. Claim only those hours which you actually attend.

Nursing: This activity is provided by Children’s Hospital Colorado and jointly provided by University of Colorado Health Medical Center of the Rockies, Memorial Hospital Central, Poudre Valley Hospital and University of Colorado Hospital and Wyoming Department of Health.

Children’s Hospital Colorado is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Western Multi-State Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commis-sion on Accreditation. This educational offering for 9 nursing contact hours is provided by Children’s Hospital Colorado (10/13- 1.75 contact hours; 10/14- 7.25 contact hours). Note: Continuing competency components and measures may now be part of your specialty certification program. Documentation of completion of the targeted education activities is required. To assist with this requirement, you may want to keep a copy of the brochure.

Respiratory Care: Application will be submitted for American Association for Respiratory CRCE credit for Respiratory Therapists.

Other: A general certificate of attendance will be provided for all other participants.

LocationThe evening dinner will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 2229 Grand Avenue in Laramie. The conference the following day will be held across from the hotel (same side of the street to the west) at the University of Wyoming Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, 222 South 22nd Street.

Please dress to accommodate temperature variations in the room. Quiet babies less than three months of age are welcome.

Room rates for conference participants are $116 for a double queen or king room + taxes per night. A TributeL. Joseph Butterfield, MD, October 5, 1926 - June 1, 1999

Dr. Butterfield, a world-renowned neonatology pioneer, visionary and master of networking, created the Newborn Center (Neonatal ICU) at Children’s Hospital Colorado in 1965. He designed a regionalized system of care, “Newborn Country USA”, advocated for newborns and their families in legislative and professional arenas, and endowed the L. Joseph Butterfield Chair in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
