Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Nurses and Allied health therapists are now required to accrue a minimum of 20 Continuing Professional Development hours per year. This is calculated as 5 hours of CPD every 3 months. The Board will conduct an annual audit of compliance with the standard. The onus will be on members to show how they have met these criteria and when you renew your registration, you will be expected to make a declaration that you have met the standard and completed the required CPD. If you are unable to make a declaration that you have met the CPD standard, the Board may refuse to renew your registration, or may grant renewal of registration subject to conditions. Members can choose from three different schemes which reflect the different ways in which professional development is accessed. These categories are: Self Directed Learning, Institution Based Learning and Special Group or Workplace Learning. Although this system is monitored on a points basis, the focus remains on learning outcomes and ensuring these meet the needs of the individual.

W&L‘s Plan Wellness & Lifestyles Australia (W&L), and its management team, have a strong appreciation of the need to continually upgrade their professional knowledge and skills to ensure that the contribution they make to the health care of patients is of the highest standard. It is expected that all nurses and therapists maintain standards of excellence in all aspects of their practice and to participate in professional development activities to continuously enhance their knowledge and skills. W&L is now able to help therapists and nurses to achieve these requirements and can also provide the required evidence in the form of printed certificates, receipts etc.

W&L’s Online Educational Library Wellness & Lifestyles Australia has just launched a new company, W&L Education. It web address is www.wleducation.com.au. This website portal is a collection of online information products and educational training tools consisting of e-books, audio/video presentations, e-learning modules, posters, hot tips newsletters and articles. Individual membership to this is currently offered to allied health therapists and nurses for $250 per year.

Multiple courses and content on this website are endorsed by APEC number 130429454 as authorised by Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) and attract CNE points as part of RCNA’s Life Long Learning Program (3LP).

Once you have undertaken the review, you may keep coming back to the form to evaluate the learning and how you have used it in your practice. This may occur over a considerable period of time. Name: Date: Title of Article(s)/book(s)/conferences(s) etc Summary of Key Points Key learning points relevant to practice (what did I learn?) Plan for application of learning into practice (what am I going to do with this learning?) Evidence of application of learning to own area of work Identification of further review

5

Conference/Seminar/Study day/Online course record and evaluation

Nurses & Therapists can use this form to record and evaluate any formal CPD activity they undertake. You should relate it to your identified learning needs and consider what you expect to achieve as a result of the activity. W&L’s Importance of learning from success Too often, we focus on how we learn from mistakes. However, it is important to stress that there is as much to learn from what we do well. Use this sheet to celebrate and explore one of the many strong areas of your current practice Description of experience Positive Outcome Your reflections Conclusions Further Actions

7

Monitoring improvements in practice

Begin by asking yourself… To help you answer this question in detail, use this box to describe what you feel has been your progress: To focus slightly more closely on this progress, use the following space to outline what you feel you are better at now than you were last year:

What progress have I made since…?

Last Year… …and now

8

Assessing your new expertise

Begin by asking yourself… To help you identify this, think in terms of these categories Now, use the box below to describe what new expertise you have attained over the past year:

What can I now do that I could not do last year?

Skills/abilities Skills/ability requires the application of knowledge to perform job functions either psycho-motor-type activities, eg clinical reasoning, practical, or cognitive capabilities eg team working, communication

Knowledge Factual or procedural knowledge is the foundation on which skills and abilities are built eg anatomy of the whole shoulder complex

9

SWOT Analysis Form

Weaknesses What am I less good at?

Opportunities What opportunities exist or might become available to help me to achieve my goals

Threats What may act to inhibit my progress? Who might get in the way?

10

Skills Development Form Use a separate sheet for each skill you work on Name: Date: Skill Area General learning outcomes (I will be able to demonstrate…) Specific expected learning outcome Learning Task Description: Resources Needed: To be completed by: Observation, reflection and self-assessment Assessment/feedback from others

11

Reflective Practice: Learning from doing Describe a recent experience in your professional life What did you do…? …and why? What went well… …and what could have been better What, (if anything) would you now do differently, faced with a similar situation? Describe what you learnt from this experience (learning outcomes)

12

Planning your learning List the skills/abilities and knowledge that you would like to develop in work… …from these, identify one short-term and one long-term learning need Long-term learning need Short-term learning need List the expected (SMART) learning outcomes for each What activities will best meet those outcomes

13
