Conventional Air Atomizing Spray Guns

Atomizing MethodsExternal Mix guns mix and atomize

the air and fluid outside the air cap. Amethod for applying virtually any type ofmaterial, external mix atomization isperfect for high-quality finishing andfast-drying materials such as lacquer.

Internal Mix guns mix the air andmaterial inside the air cap. This makesthis type of spray gun well-suited for low-pressure, low-air-volume applicationsinvolving slow-drying finishingmaterials.

AirlessAirless spraying does not directly use

compressed air to atomize the coatingmaterial. A pump delivers paint to thespray gun under high hydraulic pressure(500 to 4500 PSI) to atomize the fluid. The fluid is then released through anorifice in the spray nozzle. This processincreases transfer efficiency andproduction speed with less overspray thanconventional air atomized spray. It is thefastest means of applying a coating. Insome cases, however, fine finishes cannotbe achieved.

Material Delivery MethodsPressure Feed systems are the perfect

solution for various finishingapplications: when you need to deliverlarge amounts of material to the finisharea, when fast application is requiredand when the material is too heavy to besiphoned from a container. Designed tohandle volumes of material up to 40 oz.per minute, pressure feed fluid flow isdependent on the air or pump pressure.

Suction Feed systems siphon materialfrom a cup attached to the gun. Designedto handle up to 14 oz. of material perminute, suction feed guns are ideal forapplications that involve frequent colorchanges and finishing jobs that requireonly small amounts of material.

Gravity Feed spray guns feature anattached cup on top of the gun. Materialfluid flow is created by gravity, whichallows the operator to make fineadjustments between the atomizingpressure and fluid flow, and utilizevirtually all material in the cup.

Conventional Air Atomizing Spray Guns

A spray gun is the key component inany finishing system – whether theapplication involves large-scaleindustrial finishing or delicateprecision painting.

The right tool for your application is aspecial combination of several factors. These include the delivery system andatomization method, as well as thegun’s air cap, fluid tip and needlecombinations. The best tool for the jobwill allow you to maximize the finishquality in a minimum amount oftime.

Your application also determines thetype of material container required. For continuous spraying and high-volume applications, material can bestored in large cups or tanks that rangein capacities from 2 quarts to 60gallons. Low-volume, touch-up anddetail spray finishing operations callfor smaller cups that attach directly tothe gun.

Type of Guns

Air AtomizingBinks air atomizing spray guns are

recommended when finish quality is ofthe utmost importance. Choose from awide selection, including: light duty (foroccasional maintenance and touch-upjobs), standard production (forconventional coatings), heavy duty (forspraying a wide range of coatings), andautomatic (for use with Binks spindleand reciprocating machines).

All spray guns utilize similar parts andcomponents to deliver the finishmaterials. These common elementsinclude the gun body, trigger, fluidnozzle and needle, air nozzle and baffle.

When the trigger is engaged, it makescontact with the air valve stem whichreleases the air. Then the trigger pulls theneedle out of the fluid tip, allowingmaterial to flow through the orifice of

the fluid tip where it is then atomized.Whenever the material flow is turned onand off, there is always atomized air atthe air cap.

Air Spray Gun Selection GuideThis chart will help you quickly assess

which air spray gun is suitable for yourspecific application. First, decide if youneed a manual or automatic gun, and

whether you need it for high or lowproduction volume. Then, under theheading that meets these criteria, find theusage description that best matches yourapplication. Complete information aboutthe recommended spray gun can befound on the subsequent pages (asreferenced in the chart).

The Wren airbrush is single-actionstyle. Air and fluid are deliveredsimultaneously. The fluid delivery iscontrolled by rotating the fluid nozzle toallow more fluid to be siphoned into theair stream. Simple to operate and easy tomaintain, the Wren produces excellentresults. Because there are different typesof nozzles for Wren airbrushes, it isimportant to consider the type of workbeing done, the fineness of the linedesired, and the kind of materials beingsprayed when selecting an airbrush.
