Purpose of Conversion

• HOSS fills the capability gap to transport and support the rotary and tilt-wing portion (Sea Based Support Echelon -SBSE) of the 2015 Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) Air Combat Element (ACE)

• Convert with minimal impact to base design, thus minimizing cost

Modifying LHD-8

• Two significant changes:– The former vehicle stowage deck was lowered by 2 ft– An elevator was added to reach the former well deck

• Strength and stability analyses showed all criteria met per DDS 079-1 and SDS 100-1

• Analyzed both Min Op and Fully Loaded conditions (both with and without embarked A/C)

Future Work

• Real cost estimates need to be performed

• Aircraft stowage layout needs to be assessed by the Carrier Analysis Group at NAVAIR Lakehurst, New Jersey

• Some excess ballast tank capacity revealed by POSSE analysis could be utilized as increased JP-5 capacity
