Edithburgh Institute Committee Inc. News.

The installation of acoustic panels to the Institute Supper Room walls, installed by Harland Acoustics Pty. Ltd, is now complete.

This project was made possible by a $5,000.00 Grant from Yorke Peninsula Council, a $1,000.00 Community Grant and assistance with payment from the Edithburgh Progress Association and Institute funds.

Patrons will certainly notice the noise reduction when using this facility. The supper room feels much “cosier” too.

We do ask that NOTHING be pinned, stuck or otherwise attached to these panels as it will affect the acoustic value and damage the surface.

Before the panels were installed the wall electric bar heaters were removed by Tape Electrical , followed by the walls and ceiling being painted by Colin Hill. Work has also been done by Coobowie Carpentry Contractors to upgrade the servery with a new bench top and roller shutter.

Our Committee sincerely thanks all who voluntarily contributed to this recent project.

The Edithburgh Institute Annual General Meeting will be held 18th August 2016 in the Institute Committee Room at 7.30 p.m.

The Golden Rules–top 10 tips to protect yourself

Follow the 10 Golden Rules to protect yourself from scams.

1. Watch out for scams - scammers target you anytime, anywhere, anyhow.

2. Don’t respond - ignore suspicious emails, letters, house visits, phones calls or SMS messages—press ‘delete’, throw them out, shut the door or just hang up.

3. Don’t agree to an offer straight away - do your research and seek independent advice if it involves significant money, time or commitment, and get the offer in writing.

4. Ask yourself who you’re really dealing with - scammers pose as people or organisations that you know and trust.

5. Don’t let scammers push your buttons - scammers will play on your emotions to get what they want, including adopting a personal touch.

6. Keep your computer secure - always update your firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and only buy from a verified source.

7. Only pay online using a secure payment service—look for a URL starting with ‘https’ and a closed padlock symbol.

8. Never send money to someone you don’t know and trust - it’s rare to recover money from a scammer.

9. Protect your identity - your personal details are private and invaluable; keep them that way and away from scammers.

10. If you’ve spotted a scam, spread the word! - tell your family and friends, and report it to SCAMwatch—www.scamwatch.gov.au.

These scams have been in the form of, but not limited to, telephone calls (impersonating employees of the Australian Taxation Office), and also emails (imitating financial institutions).

Their core focus is to steal money and extract personal information.

The ACCC have published an information package titled ‘The Little Black Book of Scams’.

Of note, they have created ‘The Golden Rules’ – 10 tips to protect yourself against scammers. I have listed these important tips below.

To prevent becoming a victim, I would encourage you to visit www.scamwatch.gov.au, where you can find up-to-date information and sign up for free emails alerts on new scams.

THE LAST MUSEUM OF OLD AND NEW ART (Final Episode)

The car park for Mona is quite a walk; as I am walking up the very steep drive I met a young couple walking back down from the museum, as we got closer to each other I asked,” Was it amazing?” They answered, “You’ve asked the wrong people. I was a little surprised at their response. Anyway I reached the entrance and there were many others waiting to go in. I paid my $25, and happily so. I found it interesting that Tasmanians’ were free. Upon entering, I, along with all others, was directed to the many levels of stairs, so down we went and upon reaching the lowest level we entered the Gilbert and George exhibition, two men obviously life partners in huge portraits, at least 10 – 15 meters high and wide. I was stunned by the size! So things are now getting interesting, as George and Gilbert are unashamedly semi-naked. As I looked into their eyes I found my gaze drawn below the waist of each, as that area seemed to be grandly on show, and proudly so. Gilbert and George in states of undress and partly dressed, seemed to be constantly consummately happy in their portraits to display their penis’s, along with other men of like-minded persuasions. In the interest of more refined ladies who might happen to browse through this paper I will call the afore mentioned, ‘Willies’, so much nicer don’t you think. Not only do Gilbert and George display their ‘willies’ with abandon they seem to want to show other parts of their anatomy, I will leave that to the imagination, of you the reader, I can assure you we all have one. As much as I try, I can’t see where the art is in men showing, in artistic poses, their manhood, i.e. ‘wiliies’. Can it be that I am naïve in the matters of artistic license? I wonder if the young couple I met was of the same opinion?

Moving through many more massive portraits of Gilbert, George and friends I entered into another section of exhibits. I can relate to these beautiful objects because they are in the next section. One such is a bust of an oriental man with seemingly blue tattoos on head and shoulders, a fabulous thing; then onto a crystal sculpture, lit from within; I admired this for quite some time. There were incredible abstract hangings also illuminated from inside. Video films were running with places to sit and watch. Another was a fat red car which, from certain angles, almost looked a human body; again this was a curiosity that captured my imagination.

Next a photo of a very small woman and a very large woman, two extremes, I found it hard to understand why one was clothed and the other large lady not.

Now to the most spectacular of all the exhibits for me is the waterfall; a massive sheet of water with a beautiful backdrop of striated rock, veins of colour running through it and as I watched words would appear in the waterfall. I have captured the word ‘Woman’ in the photo (opposite), there were many different words appearing all the time, seats were provided so people could sit and watch the constantly appearing randomly changing words. So much more to see! But I don’t want to talk about too much more of what I saw, as maybe some of you will go there, unless you have already been, as I believe many have. Now I am feeling weary and need sustenance

once more, so I leave with some regret.

I stopped at The Red Devil café and enjoy gateaux and coffee. Next stop Moll Creek caves, who are celebrating the centenary of their discovery. Stalactites and stalagmites galore, all so beautiful, and again our guide was very knowledgeable with a nice personality too. I decide to head for my Hotel as I leave for the Melbourne ferry the next morning, then head off for Adelaide.

I had the best time on my holiday and recommend Tasmania to anyone, single or as a couple you won’t

be disappointed. The scenery is fabulous, people are friendly, and prices are low.

Striated Pardalote Brown-headed Honeyeater

A visit to peppermint gums

This really should have been titled mushroom hunting except that there were no mushrooms. So, it became a walk through peppermint gums. Many small birds were feeding in the trees. However, the first to catch my attention was a fox that was trotting along unaware of my presence. While taking a photograph, I unfortunately stood on a stick and there was a sharp crack – the fox was off and rapidly disappeared. Next, a blue grass butterfly distracted me – it seemed a bit late in the year to see one still active.

Jacky Winter

Back to the birds – Striated Pardalotes were feeding in the gums; moving rapidly from branch to branch. Most of the photographs had movement artifacts. Needless to say the best one is shown. The pardalotes were joined by a flock of Brown-headed Honeyeaters that moved even more rapidly through the trees. The Pardalotes are about 10cm and the Brown-headed Honeyeaters 12cm. Finally, I noticed a Jacky Winter feeding near a fence and I walked slowly towards it, approaching at an angle. However, the Jacky Winter seemed determined to stay just out of pho-tographic range until it flew up onto a branch. Then I was al-lowed to approach it for this photograph. A very pleasant walk!

Out and about

Picked recently by Peter Bartram of Edithburgh, this mushroom weighed in at nearly 500gms and measured 220mm diameter. Certainly more than a mouthful!

PADDOCK MUSHROOM

A real whopper!

Two dummies, Cinders and Ashley, taking in the sights at Coobowie. They originated from the Coobowie General Store fire and have since been sitting around various places in Coobowie. A real tourist attraction knocked up by Peter and Kathy Tape as a bit of light-hearted local humour. They may need more suitable winter type clothing since just sitting around they may soon be way too cool!

Picture sent in by Barry Schell.

Speaking of Coobowie….The new Post Office Store is now open, but is still a work in progress. The PO is open Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm and the shop is open 9am - 5pm daily. Have a coffee, pie/pasty, milk and drinks. Unleaded petrol and diesel fuel also available.

This photograph (right) of a small bat was taken recently at Edithburgh Motors where it was having a sleep, hanging upside down from a rafter.
