Cooper Fire SystemsEmergency Voice Communication
2
Since its’ launch in 2003, the VoCALL Emergency Voice
Communication System (EVCS) has been used in some
of the world’s most prestigious sites, from Wimbledon
AELTCC and St Pancras stations in the UK to the
Marina Towers and Jumeirah Tunnel in the Middle East.
VoCALL suits all sizes of installation from one and two outstationsystems in small shops like Bon Marche, to massive 364 line dualnetwork system at Westfield shopping centre in London’s White City.
Allied to the fully compliant hardware, Cooper also offer softwarepackages such as VoCALL Site Installer, allowing global configurationof the system from any exchange on the network, and the VoCALLReCALL, system, a real time incident and fault logging system, whichnot only logs faults and the start and end of call incidents, it recordsthe conversation as well.

Standards ComplianceDesigned from the outset to comply with BS5839 Pt9.
Scalable SolutionOutstations are common across the range and can be used on both compact and network solution.
Cable SavingBy utilising a star topology for compact systems and a ring and star topology for the network solution, outstations can be cabled inlow cost 2 core fire rated cables.
Space SavingBy distributing the network solution, no dedicated ‘comms’ room is required, and the exchanges can be located in risers or utility cupboards.
Highly IntegratedBy allowing designers to choose the outstation type and mix any type on a system, including emergency assistance alarms, all EVCSand disabled calls can be managed from a single control location, orin the case of the network solution up to 8 points.
Site ProvenWith thousands of sites since the launch in 2003 you can be sure of the systems reliability and longevity, all the firmware is flash™ based, making site upgrades to the latest version simple to implement to add the latest software features. T

Fire Telephones
Fire telephones are hardwired full duplex communications systemswith monitoring and battery backup, and are required in buildingsover 4 stories in many countries in the world (in the UK this isgoverned by BS9999). These are provided as a backup to traditionalfireman’s radio systems, which can fail to operate in many high riseenvironments due to the large amount of steel in the building, andthe “corona” effect of fire on radio broadcasts.
Fire telephones are also required in fire fighting lift lobbies whenthese lifts are provided within a building. Fire telephones can also beused for fire wardens to call the control point during fire drills andprimary evacuation phases before the fire services arrive andassume control.
Disabled Refuge Systems
Disabled refuge systems are required in the UK in all non domesticpremises over 1 story or where an emergency exit is by stairs (for afull description see building regulations approved document B). Adisabled refuge is a relatively safe area within a building or exitstaircase where mobility impaired occupants can be placed (not justwheelchair users) while the main building occupancy is evacuated, allowing building management and emergency services to safelyassist these people from the building when stairwell crowding haseased. Mobility impairment is defined as not being able to walk200m continuously without aid, and includes arthritis sufferers, people with leg and back injuries and women over 6 months termpregnancy. A disabled refuge system is not just for use during a fire, and must be available at all times.
Emergency Assist Alarm
An emergency assist alarm is defined in Building RegulationsApproved Document M, and must be provided at all disabled toiletswithin a non domestic premises, if the toilet is in a non permanentlyoccupied space, remote indication must be provided at a centralcontrol or monitoring point. An emergency assist alarm can only bereset by attending the location of the call, so the reset point is withinthe cubical, also allowing accidental calls to be cancelled by thetoilet occupier. The VoCALLemergency assist alarmsystem is powered from thelocal exchange or compactunit, and is fully monitoredover and above thespecification described inBS8300.T

Control and Operation
Each network 8 line exchange unit (CFVCX8) sitson a data highway and is locally powered, withinternal battery backup from a monitored, maintained sealed lead acid battery.
Up to 8 lines can be connected to eachdistributed exchange, and each line is fullymonitored for open, short or earth faults.
Up to 32 CFVCX8 exchange units can beattached to a VoCALL system giving a maximumsystem size of 256 independent lines.
The compact case is made from powder coatedzintec and is fitted with 20mm cable knockoutsfor all cables needed, and also provides spacefor the system backup 12V SLA battery.
Wiring
Using network communicationscombined with subscriber linetelephone techniques, aVoCALL provides large scalecable savings, while notrequiring a dedicated rackroom to house a centralexchange.
The network comprises a lineor ring of 8 cores, each leg canbe up to 500M depending oncable type.
A ring topology isrecommended by BS5839 Pt9.
Line cables consist of a single2 core enhanced cable, eithersoft skin types or MICC andonly 1mm CSA is required.

VoCALL handsets are designed for use by multi-disability users, having high contrast signage inline with RNIB guidelines and an induction loopcoil (to BSEN60118-4) in the handset.
It is recommend that a type A handset is used inmost locations, otherwise you may have toconsider acoustic hoods or 2 outstations in eachlocation for compliance with the otherassociated standards and laws, includingBS8300 and the Equality Act 2010.
