On Friday  the 6th of May, Year 10  travelled across  to Canberra  for  a  day  at  the War Memorial  to  help  us with our study of History.

It was very  interes ng as we saw primary and second‐ary sources throughout the memorial. Real  life histori‐cal recrea ons provided us with an experience of war. The  interac ves  displays  that  we  watched  really brought to  life what the soldiers had to go through.  It was very heart‐warming to know what the soldiers had to go  through  to protect our country.  It was  touching to find out that the youngest soldier who went to war was only 14 years old.

It affected all of the students from Cootamundra emo‐onally  going  into  the  ‘Unknown’  soldier’s memorial,

knowing  full well that the  iden fica on of this person will never be known. It also was intriguing to find your

(WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS) (WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS)   MATHS SUCCESS

Students who are successful in other subjects often have difficulty with maths. Reasons vary from one person to the next. Some suffer from maths anxiety or have a maths phobia, but for most it’s a matter of

not knowing how to study maths. Maths anxiety is one of the most frustrating obstacles to maths success. A student may do all the "right" things—work hard, pay attention in class, do home-work—and still not perform well on tests and quizzes. An internalized notion of "I can’t do maths" prevents these students from being success-ful. MathsPower.com has some excellent tips and information about how to cope with maths anxiety. A major reason many students don’t succeed in maths is because they lack good study skills. Stu-dents tend to study maths the same way they study other subjects. But maths requires the use of analytic reasoning and critical thinking skills. It’s not enough to just read and understand concepts—students must also be able to apply those concepts to solve prob-lems. PurpleMaths.com is an excellent online re-source that provides some very specific guidelines about how to study maths and do maths homework. Good organization and preparation are also essential for success in maths. For instance, the best way to prepare for a maths test is to keep up with all home-work and assignments as they are presented. As test time nears, all you have to do is review concepts and work some practice problems. Working with a competent tutor is a good solution for some students struggling with maths. The extra one-on-one time and attention can help facilitate under-standing and boost confidence. Good candidates for maths tutors retired teachers in the community, and peer tutors. Online paid tutoring services are also growing in pop-ularity. Two of the best known are Tutor.com and Brainfuse. One key to overcoming frustration with maths is to realize that it’s completely normal and that persis-tence usually pays off. Don’t give up the instant you realize you’re having trouble understanding a prob-lem. Read the problem again, several times if neces-sary. If there are terms you don’t understand, look them up. Be determined, and take advantage of easy access to online help. There are many good sites that provide help for most any maths topic. For example, to look up those terms you don’t know, use MathsWords.com. It gives the definition of maths terms used in prealgebra through to calculus.
