EU – BENCHMARK

Page 15: COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 van Aalst ERP… · COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 AUTOMATED INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE PLANNING IN THE NETHERLANDS - UPDATE Petra Paffen

EU – BENCHMARK: SCOPE

In 2015 RWS sent out a questionnaire to several European road operators to investigate for the different countries: How road maintenance planning is done?

What kind of asphalt types are applied?

What kind of surface deficits occur (with %)?

How the road is monitored?

Desired outcome of this questionnaire, and follow-up discussions, was to identify: Mutual challenges

Topics of collaboration

Page 16: COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 van Aalst ERP… · COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 AUTOMATED INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE PLANNING IN THE NETHERLANDS - UPDATE Petra Paffen

EU – BENCHMARK: MAIN RESULTS (1)

AC, SMA16 and concrete are mostly applied, but noise reducing asphalt like porous asphalt (ZOAB 0/16 and 4/8) and SMA8, SMA11 are becoming increasingly popular

In all countries road measurements, with varying frequency (every lane every year till right lane every 5 years), are taken place Detection of unevenness (rutting, IRI) is mostly fully automated

Detection of surface cracks and raveling (fretting), both also occurring frequently, is rarely automated. Visual inspections from camera pictures and / or on the road is most common practice

Page 17: COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 van Aalst ERP… · COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 AUTOMATED INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE PLANNING IN THE NETHERLANDS - UPDATE Petra Paffen

EU – BENCHMARK: MAIN RESULTS (2)

Developed algorithms using available 3D measurement techniques (see earlier results) can determine unevenness , raveling and surface cracks For finer grades asphalt like SMA8 and PA/ZOAB 4/8 and

PA/ZOAB2/6 the current systems reach their limits

Only a limited amount of suppliers are offering 3D measurement equipment. Techniques with the specifications required are even more rare

All involved countries expressed their interest in techniques and systems able to increase the level of automation in their road monitoring process

Page 18: COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 van Aalst ERP… · COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19-20 OCTOBER 2017 AUTOMATED INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE PLANNING IN THE NETHERLANDS - UPDATE Petra Paffen

EU – BENCHMARK: PROPOSAL FOR COLLABORATION

Sharing results: The level of automation on detecting road surface deficits can be

increased using available 3D techniques. RWS is willing to share its developed algorithms and models. Also RWS would be pleased to further share its experiences and best practices doing so.

Consulting the market Techniques with the specifications required to obtain 3D images are

still quite rare. A joint RFI (Request for Information), bundling our questions to the market for these systems and by this illustrating the potential market for these systems could result in a wider range of products

EU – BENCHMARK: NEXT STEPS

RWS would like to hear from you whether you are interested in further discussions on this topic. RWS will be happy to further discuss and share what’s available.

RWS would also like to hear from you whether you are interested in writing and sending out a joint RFI to the market, to learn what’s available now and what could be available in the (near) future. RWS believes that we all would benefit from such a joint request.
