Coping with the ever-growingpatient volumeTando Bago
Construction of a new sur gical complex with funding from theGovernment of Japan is moving at a fast pace. The roof is expectedto be laid in the last week of January and we expect the projectto be completed ahead of its planned schedule i.e. mid June 2014.In another activity through funding received from a generousdonor, a canteen for the patients staying overnight at the hospitaland relaying of the dilapidat ed roof of the male w ard is alsounderway and is expected to be completed by the target date.
Gambat
At our Gambat hospital, work on a new OPD complex which willhouse comfortable waiting areas for males and females, screeningrooms, refraction area, consultant rooms, a low vision clinic anda biometry room is expected to commence by mid January 2014.The OPD complex will enable it to handle the growing volume ofpatients reporting at the hospital. In addition, Doctor Residenceswill ensure their availability at all times. This project which is beingfunded by a gener ous donor based in U AE is e xpected to becompleted by mid July 2015.
Lahore
The construction of additional w ards on the first floor of thehospital that begun in June 2013 has now been completed. Theadditional capacity will go a long w ay in reducing the waitingperiod for the patients requiring surgery.
Standard Chartered FundraiserCelebrating 150 years of Standard Chartered bank in Pakistan, afundraiser for LRBT was organized at Mohatta Palace on November
20, 2013 that was attended by top 500 SCB customers. The eventraised Rs. 7.8 million for LRBT through an auction of 8 paintingsby world famous ar tists including Naqsh, Gulgee , Mashkoor,Changez and Hajra. The event was hosted by Mr. Zia Mohiuddin,and performances by world famous artists entertained the guests.During the course of the event the host encouraged the gueststo donate generously to LRBT for treating the blind people whowere less fortunate absolutely free of cost.

26 of our doctors at the Tertiary hospital, Korangi are presentlyundergoing various types of training pertaining to proceduresand techniques at the Korangi hospital.
2. Training & development
LRBT School of Ophthalmic Paramedicine
Session 2014: Admission for Ophthalmic Technician, OphthalmicOperating Theatre (OT) Technician & Refractionist Course werefinalized and announced. Classes began from January 2014.A total of 43 trainees from our entire network of 17 hospitals &53 CEHCs /Outreach Clinics and external candidates have beenselected to attend these courses leading to certification.
Session 2013 : Students of all par amedical courses having adomicile of Sindh had been enrolled by the Sindh Medical Facultyand their examination forms have also been submitted. They have

completed their academic session in D ecember 2013 and ar eawaiting their examination date.
9 students having domicile of P unjab and KPK, enrolled underaffiliation with Jinnah M edical & D ental College (JMDC), havecompleted their academic session and appear ed in the finalexamination held by JMDC in December 2013. Their results arestill pending.
Refresher Courses
One t echnician fr om CEHC Jalalpur att ended a one mon threfresher training at our Lar Multan hospital in December 2013.Three technicians from CEHC Toba Tek Singh, CEHC Samundary,CEHC Vehari & CEHC Jalalpur respectively have completed initialCEHC training; whereas one technician from our CEHC Dhadiyalis undergoing this training at Mandra hospital.
Other Training Programmes
Dr. Faisal Nawaz Khan from our Mansehra hospital attended acourse of ”BLS & ACLS Provider” at CPSP Peshawar from 13th to16th December 2013.
6 staff members fr om our various hospitals attended one daytraining session with M r. Ibrahim, Shariah Advisor from JamiaDarul Uloom, Korangi at LRBT Korangi on 14th December 2013.This training was carried out t o enable our c ounselors at thehospitals to verify from the patients if they were entitled to betreated from funding r eceived under Zak at. Training for theremaining hospitals is e xpected t o c omplete b y the end ofFebruary 2014.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal and Dr . Burhan A. Majid Khan from our Korangihospital att ended a w orkshop on “Educational P lanning &Evaluation (For Supervisor)” at CPSP K arachi from 26th to 29thDecember 2013.
Dr. Zeeshan Kamil and Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Khan from ourKorangi hospital att ended a w orkshop on “Assessment ofCompetence (For Supervisor)” at CPSP Karachi from 31st Octoberto 3rd November 2013.
Government I n-Service Training C ollege f or the Teachers ofDisabled Children conducted a course on Inclusive Education on23rd October 2013. Ms. Samaha Naeem and Ms . Aliza Firdous,Optometrists of our Lahore hospital were invited by the Collegeas Resource Persons to deliver lectures.
Drs.' Saima Amin, Tauseef Ahmed, Syed Asaad Mahmood attendedskills development workshops at CPSP.
Dr. Syed Fawad Rizvi from our Korangi hospital was appointed asExaminer for FCPS-II ( Vitreo Retinal Ophthalmology) on 17thDecember 2013, IMM TOACS (Ophthalmology) on 29th November
2013 and Assessor for Theory Assessment FCPS-II (Vitreo RetinalOphthalmology) Examinations Oct-2013 at CPSP Karachi on 28thOctober 2013.
Dr. Burhan A. Majid Khan from our Korangi hospital was appointedas Clinical Coordinator for FCPS-II (Vitreo Retinal Ophthalmology)Clinical Examination Oct-2013 at CPSP Karachi on 17th December2013.

Dr.s' Zaheer Uddin Aqil Qazi and Muhammad Tariq Khan from ourLahore hospital attended American Academy of Ophthalmology.It took place in USA from 15th to 20th November 2013.
Dr. Khalid Masood Ashraf from our Mandra hospital attended XIthBiennial Conference - SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology & 16thAnnual Congress of Ophthalmology at PC Hotel, Bhurban on 5thOctober, 2013. S everal other doc tors fr om LRB T ac tivelyparticipated in the congress from 3rd to 5th October 2013 andpresented their papers. Dr. Nida Usman of our Lahore hospitalwon 2nd prize on her paper presentation under the title “VisualOutcome after Neodymium-Yuttrium Aluminium Garnet (YAG)Application f or Posterior C apsular Opacification in DiabeticPatients.”
Vitreo Retinal Society of Pakistan arranged a Pre-Congress VitreoRetinal Live Surgery Programme during “OSP Conference” at theArmy Institute of Ophthalmology on 3rd October 2013.Dr. Muhammad Tariq Khan from our Lahore hospital was invitedto perform live Surgery.
World Sight Day 2013 was celebrated jointly by LRBT, Sightsavers,Al Ibrahim Eye hospital and PCB C ell, Civil hospital K arachi on10th October 2013 at Regent Plaza, Karachi. Members of seniormanagement of these organizations embellished the occasionwith their addresses and presentations on awareness of this daywhile staff v olunteered t o pr esent tableaus and speeches .Furthermore, another r elated func tion was organized at ourKorangi hospital on 12th October 2013. Partnership agreements
Restoring Sight of 2,974 Poor PeopleAffected by the Flood of 2010
Islamic C all Or ganization (ICO), a Qatar based or ganization,graciously agreed to sponsor 2,974 Cataract surgeries of peopleaffected by the flood of 2010. The project was arranged throughthe good offices of Sightsavers International. The project waslaunched on August 2013 and w as successfully completed onschedule in December 2013.
Human Concern International
An agreement was signed between LRBT & Human C oncern
International (HCI) on 2nd O ctober, 2013 to perform 291 sightrestoration surgeries of poor, disadvantaged and marginalizedpeople of Arifwala (Pakpattan) and Khanewal. This was in additionto the 1,623 Cataract surgeries which had already been carriedout over a 3 mon th period earlier in the y ear. The project hasbeen completed successfully in December 2013.
Vitol Charitable Foundation
A UK based organization VITOL funded US$ 450,000 to conduct76,272 Cataract surgeries on adults and per form 2529 childrensurgeries with Intra Ocular Lens (IOLs) over a period of 3 years.The project began in January 2011 and has been completed inDecember 2013. We were able t o carry out 4,811 additionalsurgeries due t o reduction in the c ost of IOL's made possiblethrough acquiring these from an alternate source.

Public-Private PartnershipAgreement Phase IV with theGovernment of Sindh
The Partnership Agreement between the Government of Sindhunder the C ommunity D evelopment P rogram and LRB T is
progressing as planned . Till the end of the quar ter endingDecember 2013, w e suc cessfully car ried out 7,140 C ataractsurgeries at the 5 desig nated hospitals in the pr ovince. We aregrateful to the G overnment of Sindh which r eleased the 2ndtranche in D ecember 2013 f or an amoun t of Rs .10.8 millionenabling us to continue the project on schedule and completeit by the end of April 2014.
Eye screening campsTwo eye screening camps were sponsored by LOTTE Chemical Pak. Ltd. These were conducted on the outskirts of Karachi. Onecamp each funded by Lal Pir Power Ltd., ICO and Mach Jail was conducted at Lar-Multan, Shahpur and Quetta respectively. A totalof 2,291 patients were examined in these camps, out of which 1,426 w ere medicated 500 were refracted and 580 referred forfurther examination and surgeries.
