On Sunday we welcomed over 20 prospective families, a number of extended family members, as well as at least 5 allied health professionals, to our Open Morning. The two hours went quickly as visitors toured the school, talked with staff in classrooms and therapy rooms, participated in information sessions in the library, enjoyed Chatters’ hospitality and savoured a sausage sizzle. The children were entertained with crafts, storytelling, egg and spoon races and collecting stickers to claim a prize. Everyone went away happy, with a number of families saying they couldn’t wait to be accepted into the school. Thank you to everyone who made the morning such a success. This week we welcome Deb Butler to the school in the role of Senior Years Coordinator/Teacher. Deb has many years’ experience, having worked in both special education and in school leadership positions.  She has worked at a number of schools including Western Suburbs Special School and, more recently, Ambrose Treacy College. Deb will be working closely with our Primary Years Coordinator and myself to expand on our existing school programs, and with the Senior School team to develop our young people as they continue their educational journey.We also welcome Minna Watson into the role of Library Assistant. Minna worked for several years in charge of a large school library and more than half a decade as a children book buyer.

It was wonderful to see so many students wearing orange on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Staff and students engaged in a number of activities over the day. The younger children practised strategies to be a good friend. The older students were empowered to be part of the solution when addressing bullying and make changes to help make safer communities for everyone. We raised over $200 from donations on the day and this will go to our ‘Friendship Chair’. The original concept of a Friendship Chair started in Britain. Students will be taught how special the seat is, and to look out for any student who is on it as they may be lonely or sad. It is hoped that students will approach the seat, and invite whoever is on it to play with them, or simply check if they are okay. We are now looking for a suitable bench seat that the students can decorate. While on the theme of building safer communities, the Australian Federal Police have been instrumental in the delivery of an evidence-based cyber safety program, ThinkUKnow. Parents and carers can access this free program at https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/, for information and resources to help create a safer online environment for young people in their care.   Stay safe. Kind regards,Jan

EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWSMeaningful engagement in play and developing

social skills have been one of our key focus area in

the Early Childhood Speech and Occupational

Therapy programs this year! Sometimes, we forget

that play itself is a powerful learning environment

for children, and is their primary way of learning and

refining skills in numerous areas of development

outside of school! This can include skill areas such

as:

Using language to initiate and sustain play activities

with others;

Testing and learning about how our body moves to

achieve a goal;

Regulating emotions and energy levels to suit the

play;

Problem solving communication breakdowns and

negotiating play;

Socialising with peers, and learning how our actions

can affect others;

Building a storyline within play when we play

imaginatively;

Consolidating concepts that have been taught in

class by incorporating them into our play scenarios.

 Happy playing!

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWSThis week in Music Therapy, Junior School have

been playing the new lolly pop drums and rainbow

scarves and working on their listening skills and

impulse control. In the pictures, we were playing

stop and go activities and learning a new song about

playing the drums. We have also been working on

gross and fine motor skills in Music and Movement

sessions. In these sessions students have been doing

deep breathing exercises and seated dance

sequences to work on core support, coordination

and calming the nervous system. The students have

also been participating in Alphabet to Music

sessions where songs are used as a tool to help the

students remember how to form each letter.

There is also a number of Junior School students

that have recently joined the Choir this term which

has been wonderful to see! We rehearse on

Thursdays at lunch time and anyone is very welcome

to join!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSThis term in Middle School we have been learning about

Space. In our Occupational Therapy fine motor sessions,

we have been working on creating our very own space

dioramas to showcase what we have learnt about space.

We started by drawing what we wanted our dioramas to

look like, then we created our space decorations with

clay, we then painted all our decorations and thought

about where we wanted to place them in our diorama

and finally, we glued all our decorations into the

diorama. We are all very proud of our work, especially

because everything in our dioramas was designed and

created by us!

Students will then use this diorama scene to create a

narrative by taking photographs using colour, black and

white and/or filters depending on the message they are

trying to convey. In photographic practice, visual

storytelling is often called a photo story. It is simply a

way to narrate a story with a series of sequenced

photographs.Comments?

problem solving and creative thinking skills.

The Arts includes Visual Arts, Drama, Dance,

Music and Media Arts. Similar skills are

developed in Technologies - Design &

Technology.

In the Senior School students have been

learning new sewing skills during their Design &
