Multicultural Minute
Did you know there are 311 different languages spo-
ken in the U.S. and that there are 14 million house-
holds where English is not the primary language? We
would love to find out how many are spoken in our
Corbell Family! We will be celebrating Corbell’s diver-
sity through a Multicultural Minute during some of
our assemblies.
This year we will be filming students in a private setting and the video will be shown
at the assemblies. Students may dress in their country’s attire (optional) and will say
“Good morning Corbell, my name is _____” in their native language. These students
will also be featured in Corbell’s Multicultural Minute bulletin board in the main hall-
way. We are looking forward to learning about many different cultures and lan-
guages!
If your child would like to participate in the Multicultural Minute, please fill out the
form here and return it to your child’s teacher. We will contact you to schedule a film-
ing session, which will be on selected Monday’s at 3:10 pm in the library.
If you have any questions about Multicultural Minute please contact the chairperson

There are plenty of ways to be active in the
winter, even if the weather turns cold. You
can stay in shape and have fun while you're
at it by working out indoors! Here are some
ideas:
Go for walks at the mall with a friend. Local
schools and churches may have indoor gyms
where you can walk. You may want to buy a pe-
dometer from a sporting goods store. You can
use it to count your steps. This will help motivate you to walk more.
Get some hand weights or stretch bands to use at home for resistance exercise.
You can get fit while you watch your favorite TV show or listen to music. Try do-
ing a little more each week. Use cans of food if you don't want to buy weights.
Buy or rent an exercise DVD, or borrow one at the library. You can also download
audio routines from the Internet. This can be a fun way to stay in shape at home.
Take the stairs and fit in walk breaks whenever you can. This will give you extra
activity, even on a busy day.
Do active housework like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, doing laundry, or
washing the windows. You can stay active while you keep your home looking
good.
Join a gym or health club. You can use machines like treadmills, stair-climbers, or
exercise bikes. Try a fitness class or a new indoor activity, like dancing or wa-
ter aerobics. Many cities have community centers that offer affordable fitness
classes.
Get involved in sports leagues in your community or at work. Many cities offer
indoor sports like basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, or swimming.
Winter Workout Ideas to Kick Start 2015!
Start a Healthier New Year with a RAWking Smoothie!
Simply combine all the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth. This is a
fun way to get your kids involved in drinking nutritious foods!
Ms. Youngblood, Principal
Energize Me Smoothie
1 pear ½ fresh or frozen blueberries 1 cup of raw spinach 1-inch piece of ginger root 1 tbsp. chia or hemp seeds 1 cup coconut water or water
Health Benefits – this smoothie is
full of easy to digest carbohydrates
that will leave you feeling energized.
The fiber content of this smoothie
will slow the release of those carbo-
hydrates into your bloodstream,
helping you to keep your energy lev-
els stable until your next meal. It is
also rich in vitamins and minerals.
Use coconut water as it gives your
body more hydration than water.
Creamy Dreamy Cleanse Smoothie
1 cup fresh or frozen pineapple ½ avocado 2 cups green leaf lettuce 1-inch piece of ginger root 1 cup coconut water or water
Health Benefits – avocado is one of
the most nutrient dense foods you
can eat. It is complete protein,
meaning that it contains all essential
amino acids your body needs to
function. It is a rich source of healthy
fats including omega 3 fatty acids. It
is also a good source of calories to
provide you with lots of fuel for your
day! It will add a creamy, thick con-
sistency to your smoothie which is
nice and satisfying.

We are doing some amazing things in the art room!
Wow!! This year is flying by! I can’t believe we are already into the end of Janu-
ary! Spring will be here before we know it!! And I am certainly looking forward to
some nice warm weather.
We are doing some amazing things in the art room! Our
Corbell students have been creating many pieces of art
using a variety of materials.
In Kindergarten we are focusing on color
right now. We are learning all about the different color
families such as warm colors, cool, colors, neutral colors,
and of course the primary and secondary colors. In our
first grade class we just finished up Greek
pottery and Navajo weaving projects and are now working on some really fun Picas-
so portraits!
Second grade has been studying perspective. We created a folk art
landscape and a desert landscape using perspective. We are currently focusing on
the artist Gustave Klimt and creating our own golden “Tree of Life”. In third
grade we are creating our own Van Gogh “Starry Night” and fourth
grade is working on a little George Rodrigue “Blue Dog”! WOW!! I really do
have the best job in the school!! It is so amazing to see our Corbell students em-
brace the different ideas and cultures of different artists and create their own pieces
of art that they are proud of and eager to bring home. As in the past I hold on to
their artwork until the spring so that none of their wonderful masterpieces get
crushed in the bottom of their backpacks on their way home. And last but not least
fifth grade just finished up some paper quilling and is currently learn-
ing the process of printmaking. They are creating their own printing plates and pro-
ducing their own edition of prints!
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your child’s life! There is nothing better
than showing a child a piece of art and hearing them say “Wow! How did they do
that!”

American Heart Month:
How to reduce your risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
Take It One Step at a Time
You can control a number of risk factors for CVD, including:
As you begin your journey to better heart health that can last a lifetime, keep these
things in mind:
Try not to become overwhelmed. Every step brings you closer to a healthier
heart, and every healthy choice makes a difference!
Partner up. The journey is more fun—and often more successful—when you
have company. Ask friends and family to join you.
Don't get discouraged. You may not be able to take all of the steps at one time.
Get a good night's sleep—also important for a healthy heart—and do what you
can tomorrow.
Reward yourself. Find fun things to do to decrease your stress. Round up some
colleagues for a lunchtime walk, join a singing group, or have a healthy dinner
with your family or friends.
Plan for Prevention
Try out these strategies for better heart health. You'll be surprised how many of
them can become lifelong habits!
1. Get a physical exam at least once each year, even if you feel healthy.
2. Monitor your blood pressure.
3. Get your cholesterol checked.
4. Eat a healthy diet.
5. Maintain a healthy weight.
6. Exercise regularly.
7. Don't smoke.
8. Limit alcohol use.
9. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar closely.
10. If you are taking medicine, follow the instructions carefully and consult your
physician if you have any concerns.
National Children's Dental Health Month
As kids get older, they still need a parent's help to keep their teeth sparkling clean
and healthy. Here are five tips—
1. Find out if your water has fluoride in it (check with your local water utility).
If it does, drink tap water instead of bottled water. Most bottled water does not con-
tain enough fluoride to prevent tooth decay. If your water is not fluoridated, talk to
a dentist or physician about whether your child needs fluoride in other forms.
2. Help your children brush their teeth (with a fluoride toothpaste) twice a day.
Young children cannot get their teeth clean by themselves. Until they are 7 or 8
years old, you will need to make sure they do a thorough job. Use no more than a
pea-size amount of toothpaste on the toothbrush, and encourage your child to spit
out toothpaste rather than swallow it.
3. Serve healthy meals and snacks.
Limit between-meal snacks.
Save candy, cookies, soda, and other sugary drinks for special
occasions.
Limit fruit juice. Follow the Daily Juice Recommendation from
the American Academy of Pediatrics (visit www.aap.org).
4. Take your children to the dentist
for regular cleanings and check-ups.
5. Ask your dentist about dental sealants.
Sealants are put on in dentists' offices, clinics, and sometimes in schools.

10 Things I love about Corbell!
As I look at the calendar, it is hard to believe that we have almost
completed six months of school. I thought it would be fun to list
ten things I love about Corbell.
1. Corbell Students- Each student is a valuable part of our school. Our students
bring a love of learning that is infectious to all.
2. Corbell Parents- The parents of Corbell continually support our teachers and staff
through participation in our school and PTA events.
3. Corbell Teachers- Teachers dedicate numerous hours to meet the needs of our
students. The hours pay off in big rewards for our students’ academic progress.
4. Corbell PTA-This school organization continually works to improve and provide
fun things for our students and teachers.
5. Corbell Corral- What a fun event to help kick off the school year!
6. Wild Walk- I have learned that our students are very competitive and athletic,
and Mrs. Flynn and I had a blast sumo wrestling.
7. Book Fair- We not only raised a lot of money for books, we realized our dads and
students love doughnuts, books, and spending time together.
8. Celebrate Corbell- Fridays are extra special when we come together to celebrate
and just have a little fun.
9. Pine Cove Camp for Fifth graders- It is so much fun spending time outdoors and
learning away from campus. Brrr, it was cold!
10. Corbell School Song- This is my first campus to have a school song. I love the
students’ participation when we sing as a school family.
See you in the hallways,
