In gratitude for all that God has given us, we joyfully share from our treasure:

REGULAR COLLECTION: $ 16,123.45 ENHANCEMENT FUND: $ 1,540.67 The Book of Wisdom foretells Christ’s suffering and death, as Jesus describes to His disciples in St. Mark’s Gospel. Both the readings from St. James and St. Mark warn us against false ambition and seeking rank while appearing to serve the Lord. Jesus teaches us that true discipleship requires the first to be last and servants to all. As Christian stewards, what is our motivation in serving the Lord?

Austin Wierschke. My idol. One day I hope to meet him and maybe learn his secret. I aspire to be as talented as he is. I am making progress but I have a long way to go. Though I got a late start, I am making up for lost time. I practice whenever I get the chance but I just feel so clumsy and awkward. It is probably my impatience and desire to increase my speed for the faster I go the worse it gets. You know the expression “All thumbs” well I wish I was. My thumbs just get in the way. Heck, Austin Wierschke is so gifted he can do it blindfolded. Me, I can’t even do it staring right at it. I can’t use the excuse that I am busy for Austin has a full time job and still finds time to do it, 10,000 times a day! Not surprising, he is the United States Texting Champ, actually a two time texting champion. How did he attain such a lofty status? Practice. He texts all the time. He keeps those thumbs limber by texting his friends, family and if bored street signs just to increase his speed. Thankfully he does not text when he drives. Un-like most texters he doesn’t abbreviate; he spells the whole word out. He is no stingy texter.

Prayer is spiritual texting. Brother Lawrence a 17th century Carmelite monk was the spiritual texter of his day. No cell phones to distract him or occupy his idle time so he just prayed. He prayed all day. Not in church or some formal prayer form but he would keep his mind on God. Throughout the day he would send spiritual text to God. As he washed the pots, worked out in the fields or taking a walk, he would lift his mind to God. In his classic book “Practicing the Presence of God” he describes how throughout the day he was mindful of God. He carried on conversations with God; nothing too deep just telling Jesus he loves him and that he needs his help. He would offer his work to God. Like texting 10 thousand times a day, Brother Lawrence kept in close contact with his heavenly Father. That’s something we all can do. We may not be texters but we can all be prayers. Just talk to God throughout the day, while you are working, driving or just taking it easy. Just let God know that you are thinking of him. Oh by the way, on God’s plan, there is no charge for praying.

Blessings ~ Fr Tom
