Editorial Comment

Twelve young ladies will walkout to the centre court onFriday at the TercentenarySports Hall to representGibraltar in the Europe Under17 Netball Championships.Months of training, day afterday will have gone past.Selected from a group of youngladies who had trained for sixmonths solid together, it is nowon their young shoulders to doGibraltar proud. Indeedexpectations are high.

Yet on the day they walk out

onto the court they will alreadyhave done Gibraltar netballproud.

After watching them train, compete in the league andovercome odds on the not sofriendly environment of warmup matches against seniorselect teams it is the team spiritand progression of this teamthat will have done us proud.

Under the watchful eye of theircoaches team Gibraltar havecreated an elite set of playerswhose rhythm on the court,

passing, movement to freespace is a delight to watch.

Last Friday the team playedone of their routine warm upmatches. The movement inpassing, the communicationbetween players, without theneed to speak at times, theenergy in intercepts, therunning into open spaces andimportantly the team spiritbetween them was astonishingto see from a Gibraltar side.

Those who have had thechance to see them already

spoke with pride of how thiswas probably the best formednational squad from all ofGibraltar sports, and indeedcoming out of the traininggrounds one could only supportthis view.

There was no arguing, noindividualism, no ego trips. Theyoung ladies listened to theircoaches, they listened to theirteammates, importantly theydid what they had beenadvised and listened again.Something that in many other

sports is difficult to find on thefield of play, especially amonga whole collective such as onesingle team. A testament if anyto the manner in which NetballGibraltar has developed theethos behind which its playersperform on the court.

Win or lose the young ladieswill have worked for theirachievements to be named asthe players to walk out oncourt.

Gibraltar hosts the Under 17

championship this very Friday,in two years time it will host theUnder 21.

It is now Gibraltar that mustwork to be named as the extraplayer to stand behind them asthey take on their visiting rivalsand bid to become Europeanchampions. A feat which is notbeyond this set of players. Afeat which could take this veryplayers to bid to become Under21 champions in 2018 ifGibraltar stands behind themthis week.

Netball Special

This weekend Gibraltar seesthe Netball Europe U17Championships hostedlocally.

Netball in Gibraltar wasrevived in 1991. From thehumble beginnings of justeight senior teams, netballhas become the leadingladies' team sport inGibraltar and the mostpopular sport for women andgirls on the Rock.

CoreSportGib had thechance to speak toPresident Moira Gomezwho was awarded a NetballEurope Service Award in2010.

Coresportgib - This FridayGibraltar sees NetballEurope U17 Championshipshosted locally, eight teamsincluding our national teamcompeting. So tell me howmuch of a nightmare has itbeen organising it all?

Moira - Anyone who hasever been involved inorganising any event can tellyou there are alwayshiccups along the way. What has made it easier forus is that we have beenpreparing for theseChampionships from lastJune, just after our season

ended. In our first meetingwe discussed time framesfor the different requirementsand very importantly each ofour roles. We matchedeach of our strengths towho was leading in whicharea; it is an incredible team.I would not call it anightmare but more ajourney with bumps andcurves and believe you me ithas been challenging attimes but I am sure we willlaugh about it when we lookback.

Coresportgib - When did youstart organising the event,

CoreSportGib speaks to

Moira Gomez

and how many people are inyour team?

Moira - We are a smallcommittee of 8 ladies verypassionate about netball, however I must say theresponse we have receivedfrom GNA members wantingto help out has beenoverwhelming.

CoreSportGib - Netball isone of those sports thateveryone remembers havingplayed in school at one timeor another, which has beenaround for decades, yet ithas never had theprominence it suddenly has.Do you hope this will

change?

Moira - I am hoping bringingthe Championships toGibraltar will inspire moreplayers to take up netball, create awareness within thecommunity of what a vibrantgame netball is and attractthe appropriate sponsors tohelp us take the sport to thenext level.

CoreSportGib - The NetballEurope U17 Championshipsis a chance to promote thesport locally, what do youexpect will come out of it forthe future?

Moira - The core of GibraltarNetball is development. We

strive to provideopportunities for ourmembers not just theplayers. As you know,Officials make the Game. Ifwe don't invest in theirdevelopment GNA will nothave a future. A structure isvital it helps us to plan, settargets and also allowsmembers to know what theyare working towards. Thecommittee always meets atthe end of every season toevaluate and discuss theoutgoing season and at thesame time plan ahead forthe new one ourCompetitions SecretaryLauren Lewis has kept us

Netball Specialsane during this time. Againplanning is important whenNetball Coaches would visit,Umpire workshops etcAllocations are so limitedthat a calendar of events iscirculated as early asSeptember to all membersand updated monthly so wecan have maximum use ofthe facilities. (I suppose I amletting you know all oursecrets) We could notachieve this without therelentless energy fromeveryone.

CoreSportGib - Apart fromthe championship weunderstand you have variousother things going at thesame time. On the one hand

you have a developmentprogramme for umpires, adevelopment plan foryounger players, and youhave one of the mostextensive sports leagues Ihave seen for netball withmatches played nearly everyday. Can you tell us a bitabout how it' been keepingeverything in perspective?

Moira - The u17 squad isalways a great age group towork with they are soenthusiastic, so full ofenergy always wanting toimprove it makes it so mucheasier for the coaches, andthe fact that there iscompetition amongst theplayers to make it to theteam encourages them to

work even harder. Theirprogress has beentremendous, a very intensetraining plan was scheduledby our coaches so theplayers could fit this aroundtheir studies.

CoreSportGib - The GibraltarUnder 17 squad have beentraining for over sevenmonths I believe now, howhard has it been to keep theteam going and how do yousee their progress?

Moira - In every competitionwe aim for the Gold, whichteam wouldn't? It is difficultto predict in the u17sbecause players changeevery year so we don’t really

Page 7: Coresportgib 09 3rd march 2016

know what to expect, however the team isfocussed both mentally andphysically for thecompetition, some of themalready played their firstinternational last year in Hullas the youngest squad everand brought home Silver. Iam confident we canimprove on this.

CoreSportGib - You will beplaying against Republic ofIreland, Switzerland andMalta in the Challengesection. How do you seeGibraltar's chances?

Moira - The NE OpenChampionships will follow inMay for our senior squad.

We only started participatingat senior level 4 years agowhen we achievedInternational Ranking forGibraltar so it is relativelynew for us. However ourcoaches are already workingtowards UKCC accreditationin support of their work andhaving Scotland coachesmentor our Squad coachesand National teams isalready showing progress.

CoreSportGib - After thisweekend you have the OpenChampionships in the UK inwhich teams from Grenadeand USA will be participatingtoo. How do you seeGibraltar's chances? andwhat's the importance of

seeing Gibraltar playing atthis level internationally?

Moira - In 2018 Gibraltar willbe hosting the NE U21s anevent we are already lookingforward to host.

CoreSportGib - Lastly, yourteam has trained hard forthis championship, the eventhas been brought toGibraltar, how important is itfor the future of netball tohave the support from thepublic? And what would yousay to the public before thetournament starts?

Moira - I would say to thepublic: Come on Gibraltarwe need your support getbehind the team!!!

Netball

On Monday night CorePhotography had theprivilege to take the teamphoto of the Under 17Gibraltar Netball Squad. Theyoung ladies were just that, young ladies, all ready, having ensured their hairwas done, their squad outfitwas elegant, the ear-ringsmatched, they were justwhat you would expect.

As luck would have it, there

was a minor hiccup, theyhad to wait for one of theteam players who waslanding from a short tripabroad and had yet notarrived due to a minor delay. It would be some 30 minuteswait, and we would have toleave for another job, andreturn, as so we did.

The young ladies wereasked to assist in setting upbecause they did not wish

us, the photographers tohave to delay anymore, butwhat they did not realise wasthat Core Photography, publishers of CoreSportGib,was not going anywherebecause these young ladieshad jumped to theinstructions of their coaches, started preparing the courtfor the shoot and were notfussing about or acting, asmany teens do, as teens, they were disciplined,

working together and as ateam. One young lady hadjumped off a plane, raced tothe court, not even gonehome yet, not even reallygreeted her own family, andwas there dressed andready to be part of the team.If ever there was a truetestament to commitmenttowards the team theseyoung ladies had showndemonstrated it to us in thatvery short hour.

This was TEAMGIBRALTAR, and we wereproud to be there and proudto take our time deliveringwhat they required.

Forming the shots was easy, every instruction, everyrequest was listened to andimmediately responded to.So it was easy to work withsuch a team, and yet evenwith this discipline, theseyoung ladies had somethingwhich made them special as

a team, they still maintainedtheir youthfulness andcharacter, and so it waseasy to also work with themwhen liaising with thecaptain the team respondedto one instruction for them tobe themselves for that oneminute.

The result was probably ashoot to remember. This isTEAM GIBRALTAR. Theteam to support thisweekend.

Jazz Café did not have aneasy ride in their matchagainst Mons Calpe 7,even though in the firstthree quarters they mighthave felt they had all thereasons for an easy win.

Jazz took the early leadgoing 6-2 ahead midwaythrough the first quarter,

further increasing theirlead to 9-3 by the end ofthe quarter.

Good defensiveinterceptions and a moredetermine approached totheir attacks than MonsCalpe led the way for Jazzto continue into thesecond quarter in much

the same way at first. Itwas not until midway intothe second quarter thatthe tables were turnedwhen Jazz's defence losttheir edge and Mons Calpestarted taking morecontrol of the game.Within minutes Jazz hadbeen reduced to nettingjust three baskets to Mons

Calpe's seven. With the lattercatching up fast Jazz seemed tobe sparked back into the game. The match had a more aggressivedetermination from both sides, withsome good passing keeping bothteams on their toes.

Jazz edged ahead 14-10 as theytook control of the game with theirlinear flank attacks which werecatching Mons Calpe out asplayers criss-crossed down theflank to find better positioning.

The third quarter was to see somedramatic moments as even thestrong passing by Jazz and theircontinued success in gainingbetter positions saw them go onthe back foot as Mons Calpecountered with bolder across courtpassing splitting the court apart.

An inspired couple of minutes, witha spectacular netted basket -which had even the opponentsapplaud at the clean manner inwhich the ball had been netted -pushed Mons Calpe to not onlyequalise, but take them into thelead for the first time.

Mons Calpe took the lead withthem into the fourth and finalperiod further increasing itmomentarily. As the match woreon, so did both teams, with somescrappy passing and loose ballswhich kept the netting down. It wasnot, however, until 3 minutes wereleft on the clock that Jazz tookback the lead once again anddidn't let go of it.

Mons Calpe, who had seemed tohave turned the tables on Jazzgave way and let Jazz through tovictory. Jazz café won on the finalbuzzer 23-21.

Fourteen, sixteen, eighteenyear olds have better thingsthan to train three to four timesa week, let alone on aSaturday, many would say, butthat is the reality of Gibraltarunder 14/16 &18 Women'sbasketball squads.

Little has as yet been heard oftheir endeavours. The youngladies are part of a four yeardevelopment plan for women'sbasketball which hopes toattract more women into thesport.

They are also very much asquad which is looking atrepresenting Gibraltar onvarious international fronts inthe coming months. Their onecommon denominator is thatthese young ladies, with theirexams, mocks, educationcoming up, train on a regularbasis every week to ensurethat they reach the levelsexpected of them at nationallevel.

These young ladies proudlywore their tracksuits to

training, basketball being theone love they hoped otherswould appreciate.

The teams will soon see theUnder 14 heading to theCanary Islands were they willbe representing Gibraltar.During the summer the youngladies will be playing forGibraltar. Some will be withinthe senior squad representingGibraltar, in Gibraltar. Thenteams will travel to Andorraand Georgia where they willcompete in the European Cup.

By the time they reach theirdestination they will haveundergone months of training, much in silence, except for theoccasional funding raisingevents which brings them tothe public forefront. That isuntil CoreSportGib walked inthrough the doors and sawwhat they were doing, thanksto their coach Kaira Sene whoasked if they could have someexposure. Something we aremore than willing to do as theyprepare for the comingmonths.

Round UP

DOING IT THE HARD WAY

They won their first two games bymargins of under 8 points, followedthis up with 2 wins in overtime and,in their latest game, just pipped Val-mar Wrighttech by 2 points. Never-theless, Mill Pharmacy Airball arethe only unbeaten team in GABBA’sFirst Division League and, doing itthe hard way, are hot favourites towin it.

The Second Division looks like beinga 3-horse race, with Europa B, Iso-las Blue Stars Reserves and ValmarWrighttech Reserves all straining tocross the finishing line in first place.

Mons Calpe Giants are clearfavourites to win the Women’sLeague, as are Isolas Blue Stars inthe Under 14 League, both un-beaten, and with clearly little risk ofbeing beaten.

Isolas Blue Stars are also unbeatenat the head of the Under 16 Leaguebut have had a couple of narrowwins and will have to be at fullstrength to keep their position to theend.

It’s an open race in the Under 18League, with CS Bayside Argus andIsolas Blue Stars sharing top spotand Europa close behind.

The final result was writtenon the wall from the eveningbefore, not the actual score-line, but the fact Grammari-ans would win the cup. Itwas a certainty that Gram-marians would win the men'shockey final. After all it wasGrammarians team 1against their team 2. Thematch had been hailed asuccess for the club evenbefore it was played. WithGrammarians now on their65th anniversary both teamsin the final was a significantachievement and testamentto their historical strength in

Gibraltar hockey.

The match was to provesomewhat of a one sided af-fair at least score wise asGrammarians 1 went on tobeat Grammarians 2 by 4-1.

The game play was some-what different as Grammari-ans 1 held the dominantstatus during the match buthaving to fight for it all theway. Many a time the firstteam were forced to playfrom deep in their defenceas the youngsters forcedthem back.

The first chance of thematch came within the firstfew minutes when the firstteam struck wide.

The first goal came in thefirst half from a direct shortcorner from Shane Ram-mage.

The second team held onand pushed on the first teamkeeping the score at 1-0 untilhalf time.

The second half started withteam 2 pinning team oneback, however it was theirlack of finishing that let them

down. To their disappoint-ment team one struck againwhen they stretched teams2s defense leaving the leftflank open. Opening the wayfor Kris Lacoste Luise tomake it 2-0.

Grammarians two werebeing caught on the breakand the score could havebeen more had it not beenfor the goalkeeper's bravery.

Minutes after the secondGrammarians one couldhave scored the third had itnot been Udhwani who

came out to block.

As the match wore on teamtwo found it harder to getthrough. With the growingconfidence of team one theystruck twice more but not be-fore team two scored. Thegoal coming from a defen-sive error that left the AngeloSantini alone on goal toscore the consolation goal.

The two other goals byGrammarians came fromCarl Rammage and GabrielBenatar.

Carl himself was injured dur-

ing the game, after ballstruck the side of his face.He was conveyed to hospitalfor treatment after leavingmost of the field in shock asto the extent of the injurywhich saw him stop in histrack and immediately callfor assistance knowing itwas not a minor injury.

It was nevertheless a Gram-marians victory as the clubtook this year's trophy just amonth before their big GalaDinner dance to celebratetheir 65th Anniversary.

With senior league leaders Lincolnplaying Europa on Monday the intensityof the rivalry between both clubs seemsto have run down the tiers, even toJunior level.

Lincoln still led the way and had alreadyclaimed their status as the dominantforce. Europa are still bidding to create arival organisation which will one day takeover at all levels.

Saturday afternoon saw the rivalry at itsheight as two of the feeder teams forthese clubs met on the field.

The Red Imps were presumed from thestart to be the ones that would come outon top, even before the match. The firstfew minutes indicated that this would beso as they pressed forward pushingEuropa back.

It was, however, Europa who struck first.A beautifully executed drive to the top farcorner, well out of the reach of the keepergave Europa the lead. There was truejubilation in the celebrations as Lincolnpicked the ball from the back of the net.

The joy was not to last for long as onceagain another beautifully executed drive, this time from an acute angle to the left

of the goal was squarely smashed acrossgoal, past the keeper and into the top farcorner. Even the opposition coachremarked on the beauty of the goal.

Red Imps had equalised and were nowdriving forward. Before half time they hada further chance to score as the ball wassmacked squarely against the post andbounced away from danger.

With the match at 1-1 both teamsreceived their half time team talk. Theintensity of the rivalry was evident as onecoach remarked out loud to his playersthat "it was not good enough" whilst theother called for focus and more effort.

With some good passing, a few skilfulmoves, some bold creative play fromplayers from both sides were showingevidence of being capable of being trueto their role as feeder teams.

The second half ended up being adifferent game ball, as Lincoln dideventually dominate play as expected. The Red Imps FC U13 Argus ended upputting a further six past Europa FC U13Green, the latter firmly at the foot of thetable.

Gibraltar United faced acrucial battle for points onSunday as they metBritannia IX, a team whichhas struggled to get back totheir initial rhythm from thebeginning of the season. With Glacis United takingthree points fromManchester 62 the previousevening the bottom of theleague has become anexciting hot pot of teamspressing for survival.

As the teams entered thefield Gibraltar United playersspoke among themselves ofthe importance of grabbingthe three points. This veryfact already highlighted the

importance the match hadbeen given by both teams.

The first five minutes of thematch saw a very nervouslooking Gibraltar United playtightly in defence but wastingmany passes. Britannia fortheir part seemed morecomposed in their approach, holding the ball and playingshort safe passes fromdefence into the midfield. However, even in this firstfive minutes Britanniashowed a lack of capacity tomake get any effectivecrosses or passes to theirfront line to threatenGoldwyn's goal.

As Gibraltar United begun tosettle down, they startedplaying crosses to theirflanks and front men whichbegun to show some effectas they started reaching theedge of Britannia's penaltyarea.

It was in one of this long ballcrosses to the wings thatJared found himself chasinga ball with only Barnfather tobeat. As the Britannia keeperdecided to make the longrun to outside the penaltybox to clear, Jared arrivedbefore him and lobbed theball high over the keeper, floating it into the back of thegoal for the 1-0. Gibraltar United contingentof supporters rose to theirfeet for a standing ovation atthe execution of the goal.

Gibraltar United opted todefend their lead from theback and started to allowBritannia to take possessionof the ball, passing andcontrolling from the back.Britannia, however foundthemselves facing a tightlyknitted defence that is nowused to the constant barrageof attacks. They had little tono effective penetration withthe only read save made byGoldwyn coming close to the

20th minute when his owndefender in an attempt toclear at the edge of his boxstruck the ball firmly towardsthe far post. Goldwyn lungedto save, getting a hand to into put it for a corner.

Gibraltar United maintainedtheir defensive posture andrelied on deep countersagainst what Britanniadefence that lookedvulnerable at times.

It was in one of this countersthat Gibraltar United puttogether a string of quickone time passes across thelength of the left flank, with afinal ball swung in to the

frontline. Three GibraltarUnited players foundthemselves by the edge ofthe box with only Barnfatherto beat. Evans was first tothe ball, controlling with hischest as he calmly roundedthe oncoming Barnfather toslot in the second.

Gibraltar United went off forhalf time leading by 2-0 inwhat was turning out to be adisastrous performance forBritannia.

Britannia pressed forwardduring the second half butonce again foundthemselves with littleopportunities to find thetarget. Gibraltar United werethe more threatening of thetwo sides with their quickcounter attacks usingMontovio as their pivotalfront man.

As the half wore on GibraltarUnited started to pushfurther up field causingfurther problems to Britanniawho saw Barnfather havingto palm out a ball on targetafter Montovio broke throughthe flanks and crossed for ashot at goal from Evans.

Just an hour and a halfbefore the match started theUnder 15 Lions match hadbeen abandoned as asudden (well not that suddenas it had been forecast)downpour flooded the pitchleaving officials no otherchoice than to stop thematch. With 45 minutes to

go before the match thestands were empty exceptfor two women who hadtravelled all the way fromJerez to watch their sonsplay for St Joseph's. Thewomen were optimistic thematch would go on, but theyseemed to be the only ones. They had received after all aWhatsup saying it was stillon, even though no officialhad yet arrived at thestadium to decide.

Just 50m down the road, atthe Tercentenary Sports Hallreception area Lions playersarrived to attend to their pre-match briefing. An oddevent, but with obvious

reasons as to why it was nottaking place in the changingroom. The Lions coach hadreceived a three match banafter he was send off inLion's previous match. Thebriefing was to see theannouncement that thirdchoice national keeper, whohad been sidelined by thetwo teams he had played forthis season, was to get hisfirst First division action ofthe season. Neale was toplay in the starting elevendue to an injury to the LionsPolish first choice keeper.

With just 25 minutes to gobefore the match the firstsigns that the match would

go on emerged as firstchoice national keeperJordan Perez warmed upwith his goalkeepingcoaches before the twoteams entered the pitch fortheir warm up. The matchwas to go on but the rainwas just not going away asthe downpour turned to a bignever-ending drizzle.

The match started with bothSt Joseph's and Lionshighlighting that this wasgoing to be a mid table clashwhere both teams would seelittle opportunities to scoreas the macth centred verymuch in midfield.

The first incursions by StJoseph's into Lions areawhich ended in corners wereto be one of the turningpoints of the half as theSaints coach realised thatNeale was still a bit rustyand had some problemsleaving his line on cornerkicks. The shouting for histeam to pressure him incorners worked. With 39minutes into the match, andneither team yet having aclear opportunity, a cornerkick was floated to the nearpost. Neale remained on hisline as the ball was headedback to goal by Cortijofloating over Lions defence

which was put under furtherpressure by the presence ofDuran by the goal line.

Cortijo's ball bouncedbetween defenders standingin the way of Neale anddropped into the back of thenet for the first goal. Nealehad little chance to get to theball before it had crossedover the line.

As the half ended Lionssought the equaliser. Ginescollected at the edge of thepenalty area and drove apower shot to the far post.Perez dived for a superbsave for a corner. Perez hadseen more action in the

morning as he attended tominor fire incidents that hehad seen during the firsthalf.

The second half started withLions pressing forward andtensions increasing betweenthe two. The tensionsreached their height whenSala reacted to a StJoseph's Morlan late kick tothe back of the leg. Salastepped forward facing offthe Saints player. His headto head with Morlan waslucky to not see more thanthe yellow card given.

Lions had a spate of goodchances. Lata, who hadbeen causing St Joseph'sdefence a few problemsbecame a key player inLions attack. His powerincursion into St Joseph'sarea, powering past threedefenders was only by aPerez save from scoring.

A few minutes later afreekick curled into the areaand saw three lions playermiss striking it before theball was kicked on target,Once again Perez saving.

Lions soon went a man

down as St Joseph'scountered and sawRodriguez trip a saintsplayer en route to goal. Thesecond yellow resulting in ared. A harsh decision tomake, but one which theofficial was forced to makeas the player was the last inthe line of defence.

St Joseph's were foundwanting as they did notcapitalise on the manadvantage, leaving Lions tohave the most possession. Ashot at goal from the edge ofthe box once again sawPerez in action. Lions

equalised from thesubsequent corner kick asthe ball was floated in forMartin to push it in.

As Lions continued to holdpossession St Joseph'sGomez Torres (Borja) foundhimself chasing a long ballforward. As Neale steppedout Borja struck the ball pasthis right to the top corner ofthe goal making it 2-1.

St Joseph's with a manadvantage on the fieldshowed very little in way ofkeeping possession. Lions, who had difficulties in finding

clear chances prior to thered card, although getting tothe second third of the pitchkept on having the sameproblems.

The game had little more tospeak about expect thecontinued calls from Lionssupporters and theirassistant coach for theofficials to change theirdecisions. At one time themain official had to warn thebench, and assistant coachfor the continued remarksagainst officials by thetouchline.

Lions tired towards the endof the match, leaving StJoseph's to pick up thepoints.

The match which saw thefirst choice and third choicekeepers of the national teamalso highlighted the need toprotect local players. Neale'sabsence from first teamfootball saw the young manrusty in many areas, hisconfidence growing as thematch went on. His lack offirst team football very mucha factor in his performance.

Football is a complex worldsurrounding a simple gameat best, and in Gibraltar it isno different.

Gibraltar's complexity infootball transcends beyondthe touchline. On Saturdayany person waiting to get theNumber Two bus to theUpper Town area would havebeen met by the smile of ayoung man, who was goingabout his daily work asnormal. The only differencebeing that that day he was onthe Upper town route. Theyoung man was none otherthan Edmund Hosken, theowner of Angels FC. A teamthat had suddenly appearedout of now where, wonpromotion to the first divisionand in the last few monthshas seen a sudden change inits prospects.

Just two months ago Angelswere very much consideredthe whipping boys. As theleague enters the third roundAngels are turning headswith their performances, although yet not collectingrewards for their efforts.Much mystery surrounds theteam that changed a wholesquad overnight. Formerplayers allege that they hadno previous warning than theresponse they received onthe last day of the transferwindow that their serviceswere no longer required. Theowner himself commentedthat the new squad were oldfriends who had come toassist him. When asked thisweekend on one of his

players he refused tocomment. A simple questionsuch as "how old is yourkeeper has he playedbefore?" received a starchyresponse of "how am Isupposed to know how old allmy players are or where theyhave played," the usuallyamicable Edmunds, followedby his new friends who cometo watch the matches everyweek having little to say andvery reluctant to sayanything.

Angels were nevertheless ateam which has set a feweyebrows twitching. Wheresome teams had believedthat Angels were an easythree points, recentperformances have shownthat they are no longer to bebelieved to be so.

Although defeated 2-1Angels left a stamp of theirintent by demonstrating thatthey are not the easypickings they used to be.Angels attacked from thestart, putting Lynx on theback foot during long periodsof the match.

Lynx did possess the greatercontrol of the match yet theirgame plan once againseemed to lack that edge tocreate goal opportunities. Itwas not until around the 30thminute that Lynx brokethrough in their clearestchance with Santos ensuringhe finished it off for the 1-0.

For the next five minutesAngels seemed to hang backand let Lynx settle in and

control play, growing inconfidence as they did.

Angels however had otherplans and soon snapped outof their gloomy cloud andbuoyed by their new foundconfidence pushed Lynx backinto their own area. Selvawas the first to miss a chanceto equalise as he skewed theball wide. Mena came next asRobba's goal was bombardedforcing two corners. Fromone of them Mena had achance to equalise with onlyRobba to beat, but findinghimself with his back to goalon turning he gave time to getblocked.

The first half finished withRobba punching one of hisposts in frustration at themanner Lynx had allowedAngels back into the game.

Angels started the second halfpressing forward pinning Lynxback into their area. Theynevertheless had fewopportunities to equalise, instead it was Lynx who hadthe clearest chance in the firstfew minutes to score. Aheader struck to the ground infront of an open goal for aneasy clearance.

Lynx brought on Doxagaratwho was to prove himself amenace for Angels. In one ofhis first actions he run intoAngels area, sidestepping thedefender and striking a curledshot which was superblysaved by Filoho for a corner.

Angels soon launched anotherof their runs deep into Lynx

half. A cross to the middle wasbadly cleared by Lynx'sVillegas Mena who send toball back to the wrong side ofRobba for the equaliser.

Angels joy was soon to bedeflated as Lynx were sparkedback into action realising theycould lose crucial points.

Doxagarat was to prove ashrewd substitution when onone of his sweeping runs sawhim once again side step thedefender and goalkeeperFiloho to strike the ballsweetly past the far post forthe winner.

Albert Parody has just walkedpast through the main gateleaving the bench when thegoal happened.

Lynx maintained theirmomentum looking for thethird but it was not to be. Lynxhad taken the points but hadbeen forced to play it out untilthe last minute.

It was a bitter sweet victory forLynx, who had finally takenthree points from a match buthad found themselves on thebackfoot against the bottom ofthe league table club. Thosewho are not aware of theprogress of Angels wouldeasily criticise Lynx for theirperformance. Yet it was a wellearned hard fought victory, against an opposition which islikely to prove an obstacle tomany other teams if theirperformances continue to lifttheir confidence as they seemto be doing.

Glacisw

In a similar way to Angels, Glacis spelltrouble for many first division sides whomight consider them as easy pickingsfollowing their disastrous first round.

The changes in coaches has broughtabout a dramatic change which has ledeven neutral supporters watching themplay shocked at the transformation. A teamthat faltered in defence, feared passingand expressed so much vulnerability intheir play that teams were crucifying them, has suddenly found it confidence. Not onlyhave Glacis shown that they can nowattack and score, their midfield play, passing movements and changes fromcounter acting defensive gameplan tocontrolling the midfield through the use ofa solid defensive "brick wall" in defence asgiven them a new life.

Manchester for their part has seen theirfortunes change, but not as much as theiropponents this weekend. Their newmanager has brought in a newdetermination, and a new belief which isclearly seen in their defensive confidence.

The Manchester v Glacis clash had anintensity of a cup tie from the start. Bothteams vying for the points to keep themsave.

Manchester started dominating possessionfrom the start with simple passing makingGlacis chase.

The tactic worked as they moved closerand closer to Glacis area. Within the firstten minutes Pecino put one past Glaciskeeper for the 1-0.

Glacis were undeterred showing from thestart they were relying on their quickcounters to put pressure on Manchester. Afact which as the match progressed was tobe proven to be a well founded confidence.

The match went into a phase in which theplay was centred in the middle third of thepitch. Manchester holding men back and

not chasing whilst Glacistried to press forwardunsuccessfully.

Manchester were effectivelystopping Glacis supply ofcrosses to their danger manSastrie who was being keptan eye on by two defenderswhen he did get the ball.Sastries was to provehimself a slippery subjectand posed the greatestthreat to Manchester'sdefence. On the half hour athrough ball saw him outrunthe defence and round offthe keeper to push it in withease for the equaliser.

With neither teamdominating, the matchtranscended into aphysicality which saw the refshow several yellow cards tostamp it out.

Manchester were slow insupporting forward runs, lacking the determination togo for a winning goal.Instead quick counters wereseen to fall flat as theattacking player had to holdback the ball to wait forsupport, many a time thesupport only coming whenthe Glacis defence hadalready positioned itself.

The last ten minutes of thefirst half saw Manchestersdefence the more active asthey repelled Glacis attacks.A solid defensive line keptGlacis out with the first halffinishing 1-1.

The clearest signs thatGlacis were finding theirpace, whilst Manchester wasbeginning to lose it was nowshowing.

The second half started withManchester pushed backdeep as Glacis had two clearchances saved by keeperMacedo.

Page 109: Coresportgib 09 3rd march 2016

Minutes later Sastrie rundown the right and shotacross goal.

Manchester had a couple ofoccasions to reach penaltyarea, first with Mikey cuttingthrough Glacis before puttingto Toncheff, who was aloneon goal only to let himself becaught by the defenders.Mikey then had the glare ofhis coach when a cross hecould have jumped to headto goal was allowed to goover his head and easilycleared.

Glacis soon returned to the

attack. Keeper Macedo wasforced to make a good savefrom a shot from numberSastrie who run into the areabeating the defence in therun once again.

Minutes later another crossinto the path of Sastrie sawhim put it past Manchesterfor the 2-1 for Glacis, but notwithout him getting knockedon the head as he did.

Facebook might havehighlighted that it was JackSergants birthday onSaturday but it seemsnobody had told Barletta,

Sastrie and Nunez whosedeep runs, deep crossesand through balls werecausing misery toManchester's defence timeand time again.

Soon after his second goalSastrie then had an openchance after a long passfrom inside Glacis area wentover the defence leaving himfree. His finish was much tobe desired putting the ballwell wide of the two posts.

Glacis were getting theupper hand on Manchesterwho failed to get into the last

third of the area. Glacisinstead had several goodchances to break through, not taking them. Manycoming from Manchester'sown errors in passing indefence. It was the lack offinishing by Glacis frontmen that did not seeManchester end up likeBrunos Magpies encounterwith Glacis which saw themputting away everythingthey could throw forward.

Manchester when attackingwere complicatingthemselves looking for thedifficult routes which werecut off by Glacis. They werelosing balls in the centreand slow in counteringwhich saw their coachvociferously calling on theirteam to put some urgencyand thought into their play.Manchester still had time tograb the game back buttheir attempts at incursionsinto Glacis half were met bya solid brick wall of adefence who were notscared to pump the ballforward and let their frontmen run after it.

Sastrie continued toterrorise the Manchesterdefence breaking throughthe middle. Just after layinga ball first controlled on thechest to see the shot by hiscolleague saved. He thenreceived another crossthrough the middle andcalmly controlled and putpast Macedo who had nochance for the 3-1.

Seconds later he foundhimself chasing anothercross this time Macedo gotthere first to clear with hisfeet.

Minutes later numberBarletta run down flankwhilst Sastrie found spacebehind the defence. Hishalf volley going over thebar.

Manchester could notrespond to Glacis countersand speed.

As the match neared itslast ten minutesManchester were met timeand again against the brickwall defence and a Glacisgrowing in confidence asSastrie, Barletta and Nunezcontinued to terrorise theirrivals. Clean break throughcrosses, eloquent touchesand skilful play playingrings around Manchester.Glacis were playingpleasing football andlooking for more goals.Glacis failing to increasetheir score in the finishing.

Many a neutral watchingthe match, including someavid Lincoln supporterscould not help but exclaimat the progress Glacis hadmade in recent weeks, andpraising their game styleand victory. The sameindicating that teamsshould now reconsiderwhat they thought of Glacisafter seeing the devastatingeffects of Glacis attacks ontheir opponents.

“El Clasico”a lo llanito

This was always going to be a classic, the two top teams of the league hadtheir pride to play for even if eight pointsseparated them before the matchstarted.

Lincoln were already on the back footeven before first whistle blew. Withseveral players injured their line upincluded players who were notconsidered by many as match fit forsuch a clash. A factor which later on inthe evening was commented on by aLincoln player as he walked to thechanging rooms following the defeat.

Europa for their part also had injurieswithin their line-up but the they seemedto have the fitter of the two teams.

The intensity of the match was clear tosee from the very kick off. Both teamsbattled for possession, but it wasEuropa who had the upper handthroughout most of the match. Lincolnwere held back and uncharacteristicallyrelied on their defence to stay in thematch as they lost possession of themidfield. A solid defensive display byEuropa kept Lincolns chances of goal toa minimum, with only two clear cutchances in the whole of the second halfwhen they most needed it that reach thetarget. The battle for the control of themidfield was clearly swayed in Europa'sfavour as they won back balls and grewin confidence.

The turning point of the game cameearly. Europa opened the score early inthe match when Mendez picked up theball outside the penalty area andthundered it low past the defence togoal. An outstretched Navas unable toget his fingertips to the ball. The Europabench rose in celebration as theysmelled the first signs of victory. Unlikeother matches the crowd rose and

cheered with over 350 fanson the stands on the night. After the incidents in the lastmatch Europa had warnedtheir fans as to what wasexpected from them so asnot to incur a further £800fine, or even a six pointdeduction as had beenmooted at first.

Buoyed by the early goalEuropa continued to look forthe second goal pushing onLincoln's defence andshutting down the attemptsfor a break to goal byLincoln's front me. Lincolnhad tried to respond to thegoal but found themselves

effectively shut down by aconfident defensive displaystarting in midfield, whichlasted for the rest of thematch.

The second half startedmuch the same way with ahigh intensity game whichsaw some sparks flying onthe pitch. This time, however, the officialsstamped their authorityproducing several yellowcards on the trot when thekicks started flying and thegame looked like heading toits known conflicts of thepast, such is the rivalrybetween the two teams.

Even the fourth official waskept on his feet making hispresence known on thetouchline at everyopportunity tensions lookedlike flaring up.

Lincoln had a good spellhalfway down the secondhalf in which they tookcontrol for a while of themidfield and attacked in theirnow traditional fast pacedflank moves to put pressureon Europa's defence. However, their final deliveryand their well known boldcrosses from flank to flank tochange the direction of playwas cut off with ease by

Europa's defence whoseemed ready for these. Thelatter soon responded bypressing even harder andcutting down theopportunities for Lincoln toplay their passing game andturned the heat back on withtheir own runs through theflanks and middle.

Europa begun again to takepossession of the game, with a string of quick shortpasses keeping possessionand looking at ways to reachthe target as Lincolndefended from deep andchased the game. AlthoughLincoln seemed to be

playing well below theirnormal standards, Europafailed in produce to manyattempts on goalthemselves.

Their insistence of playinginto the area rather thanfinding the target saw themheld back from threateningthe goal too often.

Lincoln's defence put theirheads down, quite literally, and focused on getting theball back. Roy Chipolina'ssemi-hunched back posture, eyes focused on the ball andplayer approach to obtainthe ball many a time resulted

on Europa's attacks gettingcleared before they reachedthe edge of the box.

Chipolina had a scare earlyin the second half as heblocked a shot just metresfrom the goalmouth and sawthe ball bounce of him pastthe outside of the post to abeaten Navas.

Even Lincoln's midfield werepulled back in support of thedefence to protect outsidethe penalty area at times.

Europa's pressure, nevertheless, paid off whenon the 73rd minute Leiva

broke free on the right andraced into the box with theball. As Navas came outLeiva struck with powerfullow drive into the back ofthe net, giving the keeperlittle chance to block.

Europa now 2-0 aheadcontinued to look for a thirdas their fans pushed themon. Lincoln foundthemselves for the first timethis season defending theirgoal as they foundthemselves unable to pushthrough Europa's brick walldefence. Most of thepossession ended atEuropa's feet as time andagain Lincoln weredispossessed as theyattempted to go forward.

With a 2-0 victory at the endof the match Europareduced the deficit betweenthe two to just five pointsgiving themselves somehope towards their ultimategoal of winning the league.Although even Europasupporters were not asoptimistic, the drama playedout on the field on Mondaynight had everyone rising totheir feet. "If every matchwas like this" exclaimed oneof the coaches of the juniorsides of Europa, "then Iwould come to every singlematch this season, wewould have nothing toreproach the premierleague, this was a classic."In a similar tonephotographers andsupporters were quick to

compare the match to the"el clasico," although withnone of the superstarstudded line-ups, theEuropa v Lincoln Red Impsis the derby of Gibraltarwhere Europa are bidding totake over the championsstatus Lincoln have held forso long.

As Europa celebrated withall their players, even someof the youth teams, gathered on the pitchLincoln players left the field, many with their headshanging down. As the waterwas sprayed in the air theremarks from Lincolnplayers still demonstratedsome shrugged shoulderscontempt for Europa'svictory with comments suchas "do they think they havewon the league." Althoughstill league leaders andunlikely to lose the pointswhich would see Europatake first place, the pride ofwinning and losing thisencounter was on par toplaying the final of the cupand losing to their bitterrivals.

The mini league betweenEuropa and Lincoln endedin both teams getting equalpoints from each other. However, it is the presencein the Champions Leaguequalifiers that is the ultimatetrophy and with few teamsshowing an ability to beatLincoln the five point gapspells the end of Europa'sbid for that trophy.

Saturday would see Lynxface St Joseph in what wasto be the clash of the day forthe first division leadership, but once again CoreSportGibhad decided that it was timeto look at the lower divisions, the forgotten teams.

The 3pm clash betweenSpecial Olympics and NewSaints Team soundedinteresting purely knowingthat Special Olympics hadhad proven to be a solidteam in previous matchesobserved.

What few realise is that theSpecial Olympics Futsalteam is the only team inSpecial Olympics playing in aUEFA based league. Moreimportantly, keeping with theSpecial Olympics ethos, theteam restricts it's own teamto follow the SpecialOlympics policies on whoplays. Even though they arenot required to do so underGFA rules, Special Olympicshas decided that they wouldfollow their own proceduresin selection to develop theteam further.

New Saints Team, were notthat new, made up of veteranSt Jospeh's players withSpencer Hanglin clearly theconductor of the gameplay,as was demonstrated duringthe match.

The New Saints Team werealso to prove themselves asthe experienced physicallystronger team and on theday, at least when it came totactical play in the first half.

Special Olympics went onedown very early on, with NewSaints showing why some oftheir players were onceamong the elite once upon atime ( a long time for some).

New Saints compensated fortheir lack of pace throughphysicality, control ofpossession and verydetermined play. SpecialOlympics were the faster ofthe two teams, however evenstriding forward SpecialOlympics found it hard to getclose to the Saints area withease to pose any real threatduring the first half. Spencermaking sure his team wasperforming in the manner hewas dictating and controllingfrom the back.

Although they were no matchagainst the Special Olympicspace New Saints Team hadfar more shots on targetwhich required the keeper topull out some great saves.

It was not until the start of thesecond half Special Olympicspulled one back to equalise. The veterans lost theirmomentum and begun tostruggle as their tired legsalso started to show.

As time wore on so did NewSaints legs. Their paceslowed as Special Olympicsincreased in intensity. Withinminutes Special Olympicswent ahead. A third brilliantlyexecuted drive saw SpecialOlympics take control with atwo goal lead.

New Saints were theninvolved in a series of tough

tackles which saw Special Olympicsrattled. However just as soon as itstarted it ended with SpecialOlympics putting five more past forthe 6-1 each goal saw New Saintsdeflated further as they camecrushing down.

Although the Old Victoria Stadiumsports hall has none of the presenceof the tercentenary Sports Hall, thematch saw the grittiness of old stylefootball played. Lacking the pace ofthe first division, and maybe evensome of the intensity which sees theofficials accosted so often, the matchwas an exciting affair between twovery differently styled teams.Importantly the very essence of thematch demonstrated that the SpecialOlympics were as respected as anyother team and treated as any otherteam. Even to the point that some ofthe tackling from New Saints raisedmany eyebrows and many reactionsfrom Special Olympics players, butwere just as easily brushed aside aspart of the game by New Saintsoldies.

Lynx met st JosephThe battle for top spot of the Futsal league saw Lynx confront st Joseph in whatwas a very tense and physical match.

There was little to split both teams apart. With both teams playing a tough tacklingfar which kept the score at 1-1 into the second half. The officials playing a key partin trying to keep the game under control.

Both teams had at stake top spot as the points gained on this match were theequivalent of a six pointer. This in itself was enough initiative to prompt bothteams to keep their focus and intensity throughout.

The match ended with neither team taking maximum points, a three-all draw bene-fitting St Hoseph who continue leading the pack in the first division.
